What's New in 306

What’s New in 306

; We have been learning about life in New York and other states during the Colonial period. As you know, we’re working on a Living Museum project that we can’t wait to show you! Hopefully, you’ll be able to make it on Thursday between 11 and 12 in the small gym.

; We’re finishing up our book groups that focused on the fantasy genre. Each student has done a good job of reading their books closely, discussing with their groups and writing letters about the book.

; In math, we’re diving into multiplication of larger numbers (3 digit by 1 digit and 2 digit by 2 digit). This can be a tough concept for 4th graders to grasp, especially if the basic facts haven’t been mastered. Extra practice is especially helpful! Don’t forget about https://www.ixl.com/signin/ves. It’s great targeted practice! Also, www.pearsonsuccessnet.com directly aligns with the classroom lessons. Try it!

Upcoming Events:

; 12/20/12: Living Museum, 11-12 in the small gym. Everyone is invited!

; 12/21/12: Boxes of Hope project due

; 12/24-1/1: Holiday Break

>   In language arts, we’re continuing There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom. We’re finding out that maybe Bradley isn’t as tough as we originally thought! We’re concentrating on a few CRAFT strategies:

1.   Use sticky notes to mark places you’d like to go back to when creating your response.

2. Use main idea and supporting details to determine importance.

3.   Use evidence from the text to support your response.

>   In science, we’re wrapping up our measurement unit. Your students have been measuring and comparing volume, mass, and density.

>   In social studies, we’re learning about the upcoming presidential election. Your students will have a chance to participate in the “Kids Vote” next Tuesday, so please talk with them about the process!

>   In math, we are finishing Topic 3- Place Value (Test on Wednesday) and starting Topic 4- Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers. We will continue to have “Bubble Gum” tests to increase our multiplication fact fluency.

>   Our field trip to the Huyck Preserve was soggy, but lots of fun! We were able to see many animals that we wouldn’t have had it not been raining. However, we will hope for sunny weather for our return trip in the spring. Check out some pictures: http://mrsworthleys4thgrade.shutterfly.com/494

>   Our first book order is due on October 31st. Additional catalogs are available online.

Thanks so much!

>   In Social Studies, we’re learning about what looked like before and after the Ice Age. We’re also studying about the Algonquian and Iroquois tribes.

>   In Science, we’re continuing our study of measurement. We’re also a recipient of a grant allowing the fourth grade to take 3 trips to the Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville to participate in guided lessons about wildlife and their habitats. The first trip is on October 19th. The other trips will be scheduled in May and June.

>   In ELA, we’re staring our first literature circle book, Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom by Louis Sachar. We’re also listening to Holes by Mr. Sachar. We’re adding strategies that readers use to our Reader’s CRAFT board every day!

>   In Math, we’ve wrapped up Topic 1 (Meanings of Multiplication) and started Topic 2 (Generating and Analyzing Patterns). We’re continuing our mastery of multiplication facts. Ask your child what “Bubble Gum Tests” they’ve passed! It is critical that they master these facts as soon as possible. Please encourage daily practice at home.

Important Dates:

>   October 8th- No School, Columbus Day

>   October 17th- Picture Day

>   October 19th- First Trip to Huyck Preserve

>   October 31st- Halloween Party
