Welcome to my 5th grade classroom at Dorris Intermediate School. My name is Jason Watts and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Let me share a little about myself.
I graduated from SIUC in December 1999 with a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. After working many years in managment training employees I decided to go back to school to become a teacher. I received my teaching certificate from McKendree College in May of 2008. Additionally, I received my Masters Degree in Education in May of 2009.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child to ensure a successful year. I have put this website together to answer some of the questions you might have about my 5th grade class.
I feel that good parent-teacher communication is very important. I will communicate via notes home, emails, newsletters, notes, phone calls, parent-teacher conferences and report cards throughout the year. You may also feel free to call me at 346-6311, or send a note, or e-mail me if you have any questions. Email is the easiest and fastest way to communicate with me usually. My e-mail address is jwatts@kahoks.org
I can not stress enough the importance of being on time and attending school. These are both necessary for your child’s success in school and in life. Much of our classroom learning occurs in activities or cooperative groups set up in the classroom. These activities are often graded and can not be made up at home. Please value school attendance as a priority and ensure that your child regularly attends school and is on time.
You’ll now be able to access BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP Español at school and at home, 24-hours a day. Please let me know how you like it!

So who is your teacher really? What do you know about him? Does he live in the classroom and sleep on the floor every night? No, I am a real person just like you. Here are 10 things to get to know me.
(Hint, hint.... start thinking about your Top 10 list too. It will be homework our first day of school!)
1- I love learning! The best part of being a teacher is learning new things every day. Even in my free time I love to learn.
2- I have been playing music for the last 20 something years. I play guitar, bass, ukulele dulcimer and a "strum-stick"
3- Though I mostly play the guitar, I have about 25 different stringed instruments at home.
4- I am kind of a "science nut." So we will be doing some pretty cool experiments this year, if you dare!
5- My favorite channel to watch on TV is the Discovery Channel. How It’s Made has to be one of the best shows ever made! Though I do watch BBC America a lot too. Top Gear Rules!
6- I believe "comic" books ARE real books. I have about 3000 comic books and graphic novels I have collected since I was a kid.
7- I have two children, Haden (6) and Emma (4). You will hear about them a lot.
8- I'm not a Cardinals fan… no really. I am a White Sox fan, when I am asked. However I much prefer Hockey to baseball. Go Blues!
9- I really like duck tape! If you don’t know how to fix something, try duck tape. It can’t hurt it’s already broke.
10- I believe in you! I will support you and help you become the best student I know you can be. Let’s have a great year.
