Library Trip

Our library trip was very successful!  The third grade behaved beautifully and we all had a wonderful time looking at new books and checking some out!  We look forward to our next trip!

If you do not have a Mansfield library card yet, I encourage you to get one so that your child will be able to check out books each trip.

Special "Thank You" to Mrs. Boyle, Sr. Aamina (Husna's Mom), Sr. Ummil (Muhammad's Mom), Sr. Dalal, and Sr. Aamina for providing supervision and transporting us!  We couldn't do it without you!

If you are interested in driving or supervising our next trip, just email me at jgordon@iane.org and I can give you more details!

Library Trip Volunteers Needed

The 3rd grade will be going on our first library trip this coming Monday, January 27th!

We are still in need of parent drivers.  If you are available Monday morning to drive and be with us at the library for one hour, please let me know.  If you use your car we will pay for all gas to and from the library.  We could also use just drivers, if you do not have an available car. Just let me know!

It would be very much appreciated!

A wish for tissues

Tissues

As most of you know, we have had a couple cases of colds going around the class/school.  As a result, we are out of tissues.  We would very much appreciate donations of tissue boxes and paper towels.

Thank you!

We have an early dismissal tomorrow, Friday, October 14th.  Please be at school at 2:30 to pick up your child!

Reminders/Class Expectations

·  T  Tardiness:  Please bring your child to school ON TIME!  Class begins at 8:05 and your child is late after 8:05.  It is important that your child does not miss the morning routines.  This is a crucial time in our day.  There is morning work and important morning meetings that your child will miss if late to school.  Lets work together to ensure your child is getting the most out of their time at school!

·  D Dress Code:  Make sure your child is following the dress code!  Copies of the dress code were sent home and you will find it in your school handbook.

·  G Gym Class:  Tuesday is our gym day-  please make sure your child wears gym clothes every Tuesday!

·  H Home Binders:  We would like to start using home binders instead of folders, so that your child stays more organized with corrected work, notes home, progress reports, important school information, and assessments.  In order to do so, we need your help in getting a binder for your student.  If you haven’t done so already, please send your child in with a 1 ½ inch white binder and 5 dividers/tabs.

·    D   Assessments:  Every assessment/quiz your child takes needs to be signed by a parent and sent back the next day.  I want to know that you see how your child is doing on assessments.  Also take a look at your child’s workbooks when they are sent home for homework.  This will give you a better sense of how they are doing as well.  Other corrected work (class work, homework, projects) should be kept at home.

·  H Homework: Students get math and spelling homework every day but Friday.  Usually the math homework will be a worksheet or two OR pages in their math workbook.  The spelling homework is in their Spelling/Phonics Practice Book.  This book will go home every day but Friday and should always come back to school every morning so that I can check them. Your child needs to be reading every night and filling out their reading log.  This reading log is due every Monday since your child should be reading over the weekend as well.  If you need a copy of the reading log you will find it on here in PDF form. Your child is responsible for their own homework and writing their homework in the assignment books.  Please help me by signing their assignment books so that we both know they are remembering their homework.  We have time at the end of the day to review homework and write our homework in our assignment books.  This is the time your child has to ask questions and to check that they have everything they need to complete their homework.  This week I began NO HOMEWORK notices.  These notices need to be signed by a parent.  If a child gets 3 notices, they will miss recess that day or Fun Friday.  Lets work together to create responsible students!

Curriculum Update

Reading:  This week we are focusing on the question: "How can we use money wisely?"  Our main selection this week is "Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday".
Here are our week's language arts objectives:
Students will determine the sequence of events in the order in which they occur

Students will visualize a story to improve comprehension

Students will use a glossary and dictionary to learn unfamiliar words

Students will summarize to tell about and remember important events

Students will examine features of proverbs

Writing: Your child is writing a fantasy story about a character that discovers they have a super power.  Ask your child about how his/her story is coming!  This writing assignment is from a writing competition. You child will be sent home with all the information this week.

Math:  We are learning strategies to solve subtraction and addition problems with large numbers (3 and 4-digit numbers).  We will also work a lot with two-step word problems this week.  Your child brought home their prep test to be signed.  Please sign it and have your child bring it back in.  I want to keep you in the lope about how they are doing!  The assessment will be next week and will be similar to the prep test but will also include more subtraction and addition word problems.  If your child feels like he/she needs extra practice with word problems I will send some home upon request!

Science:  This week our 3rd graders will be finishing their biomes group projects!  Ask your child what she/her knows about his/her biome.  I'm sure they can tell you all about the animals and plants that live there, the climate, and the location!  Stay tuned for information about their individual home projects!

Social Studies: We will be studying about world communities and how they are similar and difference from our community

Boston Duck Tour= Success!

The Boston Duck Tour field trip was excellent!  I was very proud of the class and their behavior on the trip.  Our tour guide complimented us on both our behavior, the questions we asked, and our answers to questions. He was very impressed with your children!  We learned a lot and had lots of fun.  Please ask your child what he/she learned, I'm sure you'll learn something new too!  I special thank you to Sr. Mona and Sr. Aamina for helping us out all day; we appreciate your help!

HOME BINDERS

Similar to last year, we will be creating binders for students to keep corrected work, progress reports, homework, notes home, notes to school, important paperwork, etc.  If you are able to do so, please send your student to school with a 1 1/2 inch binder and 5 dividers so that we can create these home binders.  We have been using purple "Home Folders", but once progress reports and corrected work start coming in, we will want something more stable to go back and forth from home to school.  We'd appreciate your help in setting up this home binders!

HOMEWORK

Your child will have spelling/phonics homework every night except Friday.  Every Friday morning your child will take a spelling quiz.  Please make sure they are studying their words every night and completing their spelling/phonics homework.
I will assign either 1-2 math practice worksheets OR page(s) from your child's math workbook.
Your child should also be reading EVERY night for 20 minutes or more.

LOCKERS

We have lockers this year!  We need to lock all our materials up every Friday because our classroom is used by the weekend school.  If you have not sent one already, please send your child in with a lock by Friday.

Week 2

Hello 3rd grade families!  This week we are all settled in and are really getting to know the routines of the classroom.  We started our curriculum this week in all subjects.  Here is a summary of what we learned about this week:

English Language Arts:  Spelling started this week!  We started off with words that are commonly misspelled by 3rd graders.  The students were also introduced to our word wall.  We took our Baseline Group Test for reading.  This test will give me a better idea of your child's vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammar abilities coming into 3rd grade.
This week our 3rd graders became genre experts!  Ask your child to tell you about all the genres of literature they learned about.

Math:  Unit 1 is all about place value!  Your 3rd grader learned how to compare 4-digit numbers and learned about how to name the value of each digit in 4-digit numbers.  We also started mental math.  It is always great practice for your child to memorize their subtraction and addition facts.  Try timing your child at home.  Flash cards work nicely also.

Science:  For the next couple weeks we will be learning about organisms and where they live.  This week we learned about habitats and the reasons why animals live where they do.  We started using our science journals.  The students were very excited!  Ask your student what they wrote about.

Social Studies: This week we discussed what social studies is and the different topics that we will be studying this year.  Your 3rd grader understands that economics, history, geography, culture, citizenship, and government are all apart of social studies. Ask your 3rd grader how!

First Week of School

The first week of school went excellent!  Everyone is excited and ready for the new year.  This week we focussed on routines and getting to know each other.  We did a lot of fun community building activities and also already started looking at all the exciting subjects that will be will learning this year.

Thank you very much for bringing in all materials that were on the supply list and joining me for the Orientation Night.  It is very nice to meet all of you and I look forward to working with you this year.

On this website you will find important reminders of upcoming events, information about what your student is doing in class each week, photos of our work, a wish list of supplies for the classroom, homework assignments, and great websites for extra practice and activities for you to do with your child at home.

Please view the website each week for updates!

Thank you!
