Class Updates and Newsletters

Final Update: 8 Awesome Days

It's hard to believe the year is coming to a close.  This class has been AMAZING and we are having a very difficult time letting them go.  This week the students worked very hard to earn 8 Awesome days of School.  Beginning Monday, we will do a special activity each day.  Please see the attachment below for a list of the daily activities.  Many allow the students to bring in something from home.  Please be sure to label all personal belongings with your child's name.

Lunch Charges and Guests

Lunchroom Charges

Friday, May 4th is the last day your child can charge a lunch in our cafeteria this school year. Please make sure that your children have enough money in their accounts to get to the end of the school year. Thank you!

Lunch Guests

We love having you visit to have lunch with your child during the school year. However, we ask that during the final two weeks of school you not take advantage of this oppor-tunity. Our food supply gets low this time of year and we certainly do not want to over judge how much we may need, order for a greater quantity, and have left over food go-ing into the summer. Plus, your child will be out of school for the summer very soon and he/she needs this social time with classmates before the school year ends. Thank you so much for your consideration!

Hamilton Mill Summer Reading Program

he school year is winding down, and I know you are all looking forward to summer. I have some information regarding Summer Reading to share.

The theme this year is Dream Big. The teen theme (for those going into 6th grade) is Own the Night. The library already knows the lineup of summer reading events, but they haven't been posted to the website quite yet.

Online registration for Summer Reading begins May 1st.

The library will begin registering in the branches on May 20th, and the program runs through August 10th.

Hamilton Mill's Summer Reading Kick-off event will be June 8th at 10:30 am with magician and ventriloquist Keith Karnock.

Attached is an SRP information sheet we created if you are interested in printing.

Raz Kids Directions - User Name: cmcgiboney

The students now have access to Raz Kids. This is a great reading program on the computer and I think you are really going to like it. You can find the link on our classroom web page. To get started press the link, enter my username: cmcgiboney, find your child's name, and enter their password (picture). I showed each of the students their passwords in class today. If they are having trouble remembering it, please let me know and I will email it to you. Once your child has entered the site, they will have access to a number of reading books that are appropriate for the reading level they are working on at this time. I strongly encourage you to sit with your child when they are working on Raz Kids. It can be a great way for you to hear your child read
new books for the first time.

To use Raz Kids:
1. Go to the picture with the eye. The students should try to* read*their books first!! They know that the computer will read the underlined words, but I have stressed to them to use the reading tricks we have been working in class first, then to check their answer with the computer.
2. The students can take the quiz at the end of the story. The computer
will read the questions and answers if you click on them.
3. Finally, the students can listen (picture with ear) to the computer
read the story.

I have not introduced any of the other features of this program to the students. For now, it would be helpful if you only have your child follow the steps listed above. We will be exploring the site more in class and will eventually listen to stories and "buy" prizes for points. Before doing those things, I need to make sure that the students know how to use it as a reading tool. I appreciate your help!

Curriculum night powerpoint and video

Several people expressed interest in the "Did you know?" video that we showed at Curriculum night.  I have put a link to the website under useful links.  Also I am attaching the power point.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Transportation Changes, Forms, and Notes

This year there has been a change in our car rider procedures.  We must have a written note stating ANY CHANGE in your child's transportation, bus or car.  Please be sure to include the car rider or bus # change in your note.  All notes must be submitted in writing first thing in the morning.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept e-mailed transportation changes.

Important:  I am by myself in the mornings and we have a very busy start to our day.  It is not possible for me to check the students' bookbags each day.  The students are responsible for emptying them, but sometimes they forget things.  Anytime you send in a car/bus note, form, money, or anything else for me, please feel free to send me a quick e-mail.  I am happy to give your child a personal reminder if I know something is coming.  I really appreciate your help with this!!

Our Classroom Promise

We promise to care about each other and our classroom.  We share what we have, listen carefully, help each other learn, work hard, and have fun together.  We understand that everyone makes mistakes, that we stand up for oueselves and others, and when someone asks us to stop, we stop.  This is who we are, even when no one is watching.
