Before the days of running water, people would take a weekly bath. They had to fetch the water themselves and it was placed next to a fire to warm the freezing water some. The same water would be shared by all the members of the household.

Before the days of toilets, people would use an outhouse; however, if it was during the middle of the night, you would use a chamber pot. In the morning, it was one of the children's chores to empty them out.

trying out our whirligigs

Andrew Johnson was working as an apprentice in an tailor shop. One day, he decided he had enough and ran away. A $10 reward was offered to anyone who found Andrew Johnson. Today, the equivalent to that amount would be around $200.

Andrew Johnson
17th President

The humble birthplace of Mr. Andrew Johnson -- later to become our nation's 17th President. He never attended a day of school in his life because his family was too poor. It was because of his wife that he finally learned to read and write.
