Donation Updates

Donations for new books greatly appreciated--see below of link

Fall Books Coming

We got one more grant fulfilled off donorschoose.org and will be receiving some more new books the first month of school.

We Successfully got three grants for Books!!!

I'm so happy to announce that we got three grants approved and will be receiving the top 100 teen books of 2010 within the next month. Now all we need is a bookcase and we are set!

New funding request: ELMO projector

I have just started a new donor request at donorschoose.org If you are able to donate even $5 for a new projector, it would be greatly appreciated. This projector would make it possible to display student papers and work on the board immediately so that we can edit each together in class the day the rough drafts and other assignments are due. As of right now, the projectors are only provided through the school for honors/GATE students. I would like to get us one in our class too (budget as of now does not have room for this so donations through this program for my project would make it happen). The projector is expensive (almost $2000) so we have a ways to go. If you go to the website: http://donorschoose.org you can type in my name: Julia Starling, and see the project proposal. Thank you for your consideration :)

Books Students WANT to Read--funded!

Thank you for all the people who made it possible to get the project funded! We just received seventy books that are the top recommended by YALSA. Students can check them out as they wish :) Happy Holidays!

Projects still awaiting funding:

10/1: DonorsChoose.org--Exciting Time to Donate!

Now until November 1st, DonorsChoose.org (where I posted two requests for funds to pay for fiction and non-fiction books for student use) if offering to give gift cards depending on how many donors we inspire to give this month. Just $5 toward one of the requests could mean $100-$1000 in gift cards toward these projects!

Note: donors have to be separate names (if I give $5 ten times, it still only counts as one donor).

Please tell everyone you know!
Our class will get credit for every individual who gives -- but only if they use these links!

10/1 Thank you!

Thank you all for the donations of Kleenex and hand wipes we got in the last two weeks. I know these will be of great use as we enter the cold and flu season. They will definitely get put to use!

Welcome

Welcome to Ms. Starling's classroom site. Here you'll find our daily agendas, links to files for the class and helpful resources for students, as well as pictures of projects. Visit regularly to keep up with what's going on.

Work experience: this is my sixth year teaching English at Maria Carrillo High School.  I have taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Academic English here, as well as the support class for 9th and 10th grades.

I recently received my Master's of Education: Reading and Language at Sonoma State University, as well as my Reading Certificate which gives me the specialization to teach reading at any grade level and to work closely with struggling students.

I try to stay on top of current research and educational practices that I incorporate into my classroom to help benefit my students. I also am an avid reader of young adult fiction and love to help people find a book with which they will fall in love. Feel free to ask for recommendations and encourage your kids to use our classroom library. I have worked hard to get several grants passed for the newest award-winning young adult literature. I have hundreds of books available to students in my classroom.

If you have questions about grades or homework, you can e-mail me at jstarling@srcs.k12.ca.us or leave a message for me at 528-5780x6287.
