Dear Families,
Please remember to buy Scrip!!! It is free money for our school! If you are going grocery shopping you can buy a $50 Super Ron's card for $50 and when you spend all of the money on the card the school will get 5% of that from Super Ron's. It is a simple way to raise money for our school and it is NO EXTRA cost to you!!! If you have questions about Scrip please let me know!!!!

Classroom Expectations

Welcome to a new school year!  This year will be filled with fun and exciting learning for your child!  This is my fifth year at Assumption B.V.M. and I am so excited to be part of this amazing school and learning community!

The following information is about your child’s classroom.  I hope that you find this information helpful, but please feel free to call me with any questions or stop in anytime!

Attendance

A successful school experience is the children, the parent and the school.  Your child’s progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation.  Regular attendance without tardiness is important.  The day starts promptly at 7:45am.  The morning is crucial for the students to learn responsibilities and to socially interact with their peers.

Transportation

If your child’s route home changes please notify the office or send a written note.  Please do not rely on your child to tell us this information.

Weekly Newsletter

Communication is the key to making this a successful year.  I will do my part in keeping you updated, but please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.  I will send home a weekly newsletter at the end of each week in your child’s take home folder informing you of upcoming events/activities for the next week.  I will also let you know the skills that we are working on so that you can reinforce them at home.

Take Home Folder

Each student will carry a folder back and forth to school in his/her backpack.  Please check the folder every night for any important messages, and you can also send messages for me by using the folder.  It will be one of the student’s responsibilities in the morning to empty out their backpack and folder.  The students will also bring homework they have done in school.  Please be positive and value the hard work you child does in school!

Literacy

In Kindergarten, everyone is at a different level in reading and writing.  The literacy program used in kindergarten involves letter of the week, daily news (writing), reading projects, centers and guided reading.  With centers and guided reading I am able to teach at each individual child’s level.  The level is determined by a reading assessment.  The students will read an unfamiliar story and they will be assessed on comprehension and fluency and the score will determine their independent reading level.  They receive a letter which is their independent reading level to choose “I Can Read Books” in Library and in the classroom.  These books may seem easy, but that is the purpose to build independent readers.  The assessment also gives me their instructional level.  During guided reading, the students meet with me to work on skills needed with books at their instructional level.  It is important that as parents you praise your child for their OWN achievements and growth!!!  Once the students get into the routine of centers I could use some volunteers to help out if anyone is interested and I will let you know when that time comes!

Bag Books/Word Rings

After a few months into the school year, I will be sending home a bag book and a ring of words that the student can practice at home.  The word ring will be filled with sight words we have been working on in class and also decodable words that the child can sound out.  The students will get excited when they will be able to read the books with little or no assistance.  Please take time to read these with your child, sign your name, and return.

Report Cards

Report cards are sent home second, third, and fourth quarter.  If you have any questions about the report card or want to schedule a meeting please let me know.  When you have read the report card please sign it and return it.

Show & Share

Each child will get a day of the week to bring in one thing to share with the rest of the class.  I will let you know what the schedule will be.  Please no video games or toy weapons!  The specified Show and Share day should be the ONLY day the students bring in toys from home so they do not become a distraction.

Worker of the Week

I look forward to learning about each student in our room!!  During the school year your child will have one week in which they will be selected to be the Worker of the Week.  This is a time when we will put the spotlight on one child and get to know him or her better.  Each day of the week they will bring a different item to school.  A week before your child is in the special worker, I will send home a letter of what they need to bring each day.

Birthday Treats

You may send a HEALTHY birthday treat on or around your child’s birthday if you would like.  If you son/daughter has a summer birthday we will celebrate on his or her half birthday.

Rest Time

Our class will rest for about 30 minutes each day after lunch.  Your child is not required to go to sleep, but must rest and relax quietly during this time.  As the children become familiar with this quiet time routine I will give them an option to read or draw.  Later in the year quiet time becomes rest, read, or write time.  Each student will have a bin to keep a sheet or towel to cover their mat, a small pillow, and/or a small blanket.  Please send something to cover their mat!  I will send home sheets or towels, and blankets home each Friday or every other Friday to be washed.

Mass

During the first semester, we will attend Mass once a month and those days will be announced in the newsletter.  During the second semester, we will attend Mass every week.  The dress code for Mass should be followed as stated in the handbook.

Discipline

Our Classroom rules include:

1.    Be kind to others

2.   Raise your hand to speak

3.   Listen while others are talking

4.   Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself

5.    Always do your best work

At the beginning of the year, I take a lot of time and make sure the children are aware of the expectations in the classroom.  We role play situations to practice making good choices and we have class meetings to discuss the expectations and make sure everyone feels safe at school.

If a child has difficulty following the rules I will try talking to the child first and implement a lot of positive reinforcement.  If it continues I ask the student to draw out the problem on a Think Sheet and draw a way to solve the problem.  If I feel that a student needs a behavior plan I will contact you and we will discuss some options.  I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for the children in which we (parents, teachers, and student) must work as a TEAM to help the children make good choices!

*If we work as a team the entire week the class will earn a popcorn and movie party on Friday afternoons!

Scholastic Book Orders

I send home Scholastic Book Orders once a month.  This is a great way to build your library at home at affordable prices.  If you choose to place an order it is very helpful if you send a check payable to Scholastic Book Club.

I am very excited about the new school year.  If at any time you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at school or through e-mail.  I want to make this school year enjoyable experience for all of us!

Kindergarten Sight Words

Kindergarteners need to know all the letter sounds and many sight words before 1st Grade.  Sight words our words that kids recognize and read without sounding out.  I have added that sight word list so you can practice the words with your child through fun games!
