Tournament Report: MTRFC Fall Social Tournament

On a day which brought weather more reminiscent of a Fall day in the Rhondda Valley in Wales, Winter in Invercargill in New Zealand, any day of the year at Lansdowne Road, or any beach in England during the Summer, MTRFC recently hosted an end-of-season social  3 Club tournament at the High School, with our friends from St. Anne de Bellevue (SAB) and Montreal Barbarians making the long trek up North to play on the recently-refurbished field.

Meant as an unavoidable prelude to some serious post-match drinking at Nelly O’Connors, the rugby played throughout the day was hard-fought, skilful and committed, and provided plenty of entertainment to the crowds on the bleachers who had braved the terrible weather to support our boys.

MTRFC Tournament Squad: Mark Burge, Jeremy Janelle, Frank Balducci, Oliver Stovell, Phil Paquette, Fred Baesa, Danny Luke, Philip O’Connor, Alistair Greenfield, Mark Morrissey, Sean Hummel, Mark O’Connor, Tom Gagne, Warren Spurr, Olivier Dube, Christopher Savard, Ron Cole,  Nic Picq.

Taking into consideration MTRFC’s significant range of experience (from Ron and Nic playing their first games up to Phil O’C playing his 1,353,289th game), age (from Sonic at a surprisingly youthful 9 years old up to Phil O’C at a veritable stately 79 years old) and playing ability (from the English/French contingent, through Canadian, Kiwi, Irish contingents up to the Welsh contingent), it was an enthusiastic MTRFC squad that kitted-up, taped-up, bandaged-up and braced-up in preparation for the hard work ahead.

Game 1: MTRFC v Montreal Barbarians.

Having pushed Barbs II all the way earlier this summer (29-27 to the Barbs), the MTRFC team was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to level the series. However, the visiting team bore no resemblance to the Barbs II team we had previously encountered. Clearly, the thought of playing in the rain, wind and cold had convinced a fair number of the Barbs I team to make the trip, as the Barbs fielded a very strong hybrid team. Social game or no social game, this was going to be hard.....

With the kick-off whistle still echoing in the wind, MTRFC shipped an early try.  Re-focussed after a stern bollocking from captain and coaches, the team set about a magnificent defensive effort – we must have performed at least 90% of the tackling throughout the game – which prevented wave after wave of Barbs attacks from crossing the line. Despite the protestations of the MTRFC players (and due to some illegal hands on the ball by our opponents!), an extremely dubious try was awarded to the Barbs on the stroke of half time, a cruel blow after our boys defensive heroics.

The second half was far more balanced, with the MTRFC team finally putting some phases together. However, the Barbs continued to put pressure on our set piece game, and prevented any major assaults on the Barbs try line. A brief outbreak of minor “handbags” provided an insight into the startling acceleration of Tom G, who sped from the left wing to the right wing to see what was going on. Alas, this was as close to an attacking move that we were to see from our back 3 due to the scarcity of attacking ball.

In the dying minutes of the game, and after a sustained spell of pressure, the Barbs fashioned a well-worked try in the left corner, clearly demonstrating the benefits of training and playing together on a regular basis. All in all, the MTRC team was extremely competitive against a well-seasoned, first team heavy, Barbs team.

Final Result:     MTRFC  0      -      BARBS   15

Game 2: Montreal Barbarians  v SAB

Despite best intentions to watch the second game, the author, along with what appeared to be a fair portion of the MTRFC team, Executive Committee and Supporters, temporarily hightailed it to Tim Hortons to recuperate from the cold, wind and rain (avec une beigne Rousette au Miel et cafe Moyen Double-Double; perfect nutritional intake 20 minutes before the next game!)

The St Anne’s team – fresh off the bus – were augmented with a couple of MTRFC loaners. As such, Ron, Nico, Sonic and Sean had the opportunity to get stuck into the Barbs dressed in the green of St. Anne / Mac College. A surprisingly tight game (we obviously wore them out in the previous game!) resulted in a win for the Barbs who finished the day with a 2-0 record. Special mention to our boys for offering to play for SAB is this game.

Final Result:     Montreal Barbarians    7      -      St Anne de Bellevue    0

Game 3: MTRFC v St. Anne de Bellevue

Marty Silverstone had remained true to his word and brought a tournament squad that perfectly suited the spirit of the day; the opportunity to blood some new, up-and-coming youngsters, whist providing the “old guard” the chance to earn their pints and regale the younger players with stories of their glory years. Similar to MTRFC, the SAB squad was a melange of experience and age, with many of their younger squad members playing for Mac College. As SAB are the reigning Provincial Champions in most Quebec Divisions, it was great to see them embracing the social nature of the day.

Due to the high-attrition rate of front row forwards in the previous games, it was agreed to play uncontested scrums for this final game of the afternoon. Having a secure ‘platform’ provided the pretty boys in the MTRFC back division the chance to strut their stuff, with the half backs quickly able to bring an element of control to proceedings. A number of pre-planned moves (“Crash Ball to Sean”) were executed with aplomb, augmented by some great individual skills from Messrs Greenfield, Gagne and O’Connor (the younger). One of the interesting elements of the final game involved Mark O’C squaring off against his School Rugby Co-ordinator, ex-international Scott Armstrong. How are those post-game Grades working out Mark?

The MTRFC Back Row was rampaging about the field, ensuring that our defence remained watertight and acting as the link between forwards and backs – just like on the TV. A highlight of the game involved our very own Phil O’Connor proclaiming in a maul that “I have the ball, I have the ball”, only to discover, much to our amusement, that the oldest person on the pitch, Marty Silverstone from St Anne’s, had successfully managed to relieve him of the ball and was hightailing towards the MTRFC line. Thankfully, a couple of our younger players were there to save the day. Phil gracefully (albeit reluctantly) conceded the “Battle of the Oldest Players” Award to Marty.

With MTRFC 28-0 to the good, and 2 minutes remaining on the clock, the team was about to celebrate its first 15 a side win in style. Then, in a shameless ploy to hog all the glory and news coverage, not to mention sympathy from all the female spectators, a certain well-known kiwi in our ranks decided to make an all-or-nothing shot at infamy by positioning himself in such a way that allowed the other 29 players on the pitch to fall on his awkwardly-positioned leg. When Danny failed to make it to the next breakdown in his usual lightning-quick manner, we realised something was wrong. We realised that something was really wrong when he immediately started an on-field auction for his tickets to see the Canadiens that evening..... The referee decided to close proceeding a few minutes early  to allow all the ladies to come onto the pitch to comment on Danny’s bravery, mop his brow, and de-clothe themselves to ensure he was “warm and comfy” whilst the real try-scoring and conversion-kicking heroes of the day trudged off as an incidental side note to the day’s playing proceedings.....

Final Result:     MTRFC  28     -      St Anne de Bellevue    0

All in all, a fantastic time was had by all. Despite the terrible weather, the rugby was half-decent, the support excellent, and the beer&food delicious. Many thanks to Marty Silverstone at SAB, and Jason Thompson at the Barbs, for corralling their players and committing to the trek up to Mont-Tremblant; it was greatly appreciated. The warm hospitality of Nelly O’Connors provided the location for a great evening; some old acquaintances were renewed, and plenty of new ones forged.

Special Mentions of the week:

Mark Burge: for i) observing that it had been ten years since he last played a game of rugby and yet here he was playing 2 in the space of 2 hours “rugby games are just like buses.......”

Sean Hummel:  for i) playing in all 3 games. At 5 full speed steps per half, Sean broke his personal best by running 30 terminal velocity steps. Nice job!; ii) winning first place in the sartorial faux-pas of the day category – Nice Beanie Sean!; and iii) winning second place in the sartorial faux-pas of the day category – ask Marty for larger St. Annes shirt next time Sean!

Philip “ah, c’mon ref!” O’Connor:  for i) making the most complaints to the Referee; ii) making the most polite complaints to the referee; iii) winning the “most body parts requiring taping up” award by quite a considerable margin, and iv) covering more yards throughout the afternoon that any of the young ‘uns. Nice job Phil!

Tom Gagne: for winning the “Furthest Travelled on Pitch to participate in a ‘fracas’” Award. There is clearly something between Tom and the Barbs that we need to know about........

Mark Morrissey: for i) performing the most amusing Re-start of the Day, and ii) uttering the Expletive of the Day after the aforementioned re-start bobbled 2 yards forward.

Alistair Greenfield: for i) maintaining his MTRFC try-scoring record, despite fierce competition from Tom Gagne, and ii) missing his penalty attempt in the Barbs game to leave a certain M. Morrissey with the only 100% kicking record...... J

Star of the Week:

Danny Luke for i) scoring the try of the tournament with a 20 meter wind and water-assisted slide to the line (it was a thing of beauty to behold with a 2 meter high bow wave of standing water erupting in front of his outstretched arms.....); ii) securing second place in the “most frequent back-chat to the referee” award (winner announced above); iii) shirking all post-match beer buying responsibilities with no valid excuse,  iv) winning the “Roger Castonguay On field Self-Diagnosis Award” for under-estimating the injury (it was actually broken in 3 places, 2 more than he thought), and, most importantly, v) taking the aforementioned injury with great spirit, humour and courage (all I would point out, somewhat out of character for a NZ rugby player......... :-0)).

Editorial Note 1: All comments and opinions expressed in this article are the views of the author alone, and do not reflect the opinion of MTRFC, apart from any inferences that the MTRFC Outside Half really did drop the restart into a puddle of mud, causing it to stick in the ground (honest) which cannot be categorized as personal conjecture, but as an undeniable fact.

Editorial Note 2: Any name changes, errors or omissions have not been made to protect identities. I have simply been way too late in compiling this report and have forgotten many of the details and employed some artistic license. Any complaints should be submitted in writing to the Club Treasurer no later than yesterday.

MTRFC First Annual Fall Mini Rugby Jamboree a great success

On Saturday 19th September, 120 young players, supported with great enthusiasm by coaches, friends and families, gathered in Arundel to participate in the first jamboree hosted by Mont-Tremblant Rugby Football Club (MTRFC).

Barrhaven RFC, Chelsea RFC, West Island RFC and RCM made the long journey to Arundel to join MTRFC in this, the first ever club rugby tournament in the Laurentians. A big thankyou goes out to the Coaches of each participating team for supporting this Event.

After a long, hard (and initially, cold...) day of rugby, our young MTRFC players did themselves, their familes and their coaches, proud by representing our club with great distinction:

U8:   Tied for 1st Place

U10:  1st Place

U12:  Runners-Up

U14:  Runners-Up

Many people/organisations were responsible for making the Jamboree a great success, with particular thanks to the Event Sponsors: The Municipality of Arundel and Sotherby's Real Estate (Herb Ratsch).

The Club Committee and Coaches would also like to acknowledge the great work undertaken by our army of volunteers including Jo (Event Planning, Onsite Mgt and curry pick-up...); Oli (Field Mgt); Al, John, Tommy, Roger, Stefanie (cooking detail); Karen and Danush (for keeping everything in order in 'the hatch'); Neil, Jim, Alain et al (First Responder Medical support, general pre-event assistance); Gui and Philip (Refereeing); Fred and Laura/Louis @ Northland (food purchase support/logistics); Robin (field prep and parking); Kim and Nico (photography) and our Senior Men's Squad (field preparation). Thanks also to all others who helped out on the day.

Also, many thanks to our Club Sponsors for their ongoing support: Nelly O' Connors, HR Construction, Northland and The Lunch Stop. The fact that the club is able to put out 4 well equipped and well prepared Age Group squads is in no small part due to their generosity.

Full Jamboree Report, Results and Photographs to follow shortly.

Update on MTRFC End-of-Season Activities

MTRFC is planning 2 key activities to close out this year's Fall Season:

Sunday 18th October 2009: We intend to participate in the Chelsea RFC Mini-Rugby Jamboree, to be held in Chelsea, Quebec, and encompassing our U8, U10, U12 and U14 Age Groups. We will be sending out an email in the coming week to determine how many of our players will be able to participate. Please note: This event will be our last competitive outing of 2009, so we encourage as many players as possible to participate.

Sunday 25th October 2009: This will be our last practice of the Season. In addition to announcing the 2009 winners of the "Spirit of Rugby Award" and "T Warrington Trophy", we will also be having some fun on the playing field, with our young players able to test their skills against the Coaching Team and, if we can obtain enough volunteers, also against the Parents. Weather permitting, we will wrap up the session with a BBQ.

Further details to follow.

MTRFC v Montreal Barbarians - Summary

The MTRFC Senior Men's side fought a tough, close game against the Montreal Barbarians on Saturday August 1st. Despite playing the second half of the game 2 men down, MTRFC played valiantly, eventually losing by the smallest of margins: 29-27.  Still, the team scored some great trys, and provided tough opposition for the 2nd oldest team in Quebec. See Photo Gallery for images (thanks Kim!) of all the action. Match Report To Follow.

Match Report: MTRFC v TMRRFC, Saturday 23rd May, 2009.

MTRFC opened its 2009 home season by hosting the Town of Mont Royal Rugby Football Club (TMR) social side (nope), old boys (nope), thirds (nope), seconds (nope), first/seconds hybrid team (yep) at the High School in St. Jovite on a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon (Note to self: sunscreen on head now mandatory when playing rugby… ensure a good supply for the Old Boys...).

Match Squad: Frank Balducci, Olivier Dube, Emilano Garriz, Oliver Stovell, Philippe Marchand, Philippe Paquette, James “Ed” Edwards, Mike Badke, Sam Gregory, Danny Luke, Mark Morrissey, Alistair Greenfield, Thomas Gagne, Jamie Jack, Warren Spurr, Dave Innes, Mark O’Connor, John Atkins (Honorary Coach for the Day)

The MTRFC squad, looking resplendent in the new MTRFC Club Kit (being worn for the first time), took to the “field” with a spring in their step, despite a number of players experiencing career-threatening blisters incurred by wearing new boots for the first time. You know who you are……

MTRFC had previously organized a Snow Bowl this Winter and, this time around, the game will be remembered as the “MTTRFC 2009 Dust Bowl” such was the poor condition of the pitch, where a blade of grass was as scarce as a Frank B sidestep (but not quite as rare as John Atkins turning up for training). In fact, we had to explain to the Referee that our forwards were not intentionally laying over the ball, they were simply looking for the ball within the dust storm that broke-out at every ruck.

Despite the quality of the opposition, and the somewhat eclectic make-up of the MTRFC squad (a motley combination of Old Boys, “newbies”, youngsters and seasoned ex-Canterbury area players (unfortunately Canterbury England, NOT Canterbury New Zealand….)) the MTRFC team took the game to TMR and performed heroically for the first quarter, defending like the South Wales Borderers at the famous battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879 (“No tackling until you can see the whites of their eyes boys….”), which happens to be the same year that Messrs Atkins, Innes and Balducci played their first game of rugby (with Messrs Badke and Spurr making their debuts as Ball Boys, which they only signed up to as they thought it meant something else…..)

The tackling, which was performed 90% of the time by MTRFC, was fast and furious. Much to the delight of the packed Bleachers (great support – thanks to all!), a few big hits were put in early on to show TMR that, despite their dancing feet, perfectly coiffed hair-dos, fancy warm-up drills and all round rugby prowess, they were in for a long 80 (nope), 60 (nope), 40 (maybe), 20 (yep) minutes.

TMR then took pity on the Cardiff Blues fans in the MTRFC squad and decided to spare them the crushing experience of another dreaded Penalty Shootout by scoring a number of well-worked tries, all of which they had to work incredibly hard to close-out. The enthusiasm and commitment of the Mont-Tremblant team was eventually overridden by the experience and slickness of the TMR boys, who proceeded to play some great rugby.

The agreed “rolling substitution” policy came into full effect to allow frequent trips to the physio for treatments to knees, eyes, noses, ankles and other unspecified anatomical appendages. An interesting side-effect of the rolling replacement policy was that you were never guaranteed to return to the field in the same position. It didn’t quite get to the point where Jamie Jack and Mark O’Connor were propping, with Frank and Mike at half backs, but we weren’t far off.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to cross the whitewash with ball in hand (match ball, anyway…), but Danny’s sweetly struck drop goal ensured we avoided the dreaded “duck”, whereas Jamie’s earlier penalty attempt was so off-target that it had actually nearly killed a number of nearby waterfowl.

Result: MTRFC 3 TMR RFC 46

Summary:

A fantastic day………enjoyed by MTRFC players, friends, families and supporters, as well as our first visitors, the guys from TMR (thanks for making the trip guys).

Everyone involved in organizing the day, supporting the team, playing in the match and generally encouraging us to continue growing as a Club can feel extremely proud. We have received favorable feedback from many of the folks in the local community who stopped by to watch their first ever rugby game (“you crazy bastards…” being the most commonly used phrase). Even the local Police Officers were impressed, most likely because it was 3pm on a Saturday and Danny was still (mostly) sober.

Mal and Dave took charge of the second, and arguably most important, element of the day by hosting all and sundry at the MTRFC Clubhouse, Nelly O’Connors. A fine time was had by all, with the number of tales of rugby heroics only being exceeded by the number of pints consumed. The good thing about having your sponsors (and oldest player….) as Publicans is that there is no argument when it comes to keeping the bar open and beer flowing. Thanks guys – your enthusiastic support for the club is greatly appreciated.

Training the following morning was somewhat subdued, with the coaching staff generally in pretty poor shape. Still, with sharp coaching intellect, warm-up duties and key drill co-ordination activities were delegated to senior mini-rugby players. Purely as part of their rugby development of course……….

Special Mentions of the week:

Too many to mention, but a few selected highlights:

Danny: for i) scoring MTRFC’s first ‘home’ competitive points with a sweetly struck drop goal from 35m, ii) ignoring a 2 man overlap to score said drop goal (), iii) winning the “longest time to get up after a tackle whilst not technically injured” award and iv) organizing the free luge rides for MTRFC mini-rugby players earlier that day.

Jamie: for i) having the balls to attempt an outrageously difficult penalty goal – 40m out and on the touchline in front of the bleachers, and ii) expressing the profanity of the day as the aforementioned penalty goal attempt sliced perpendicular to its intended direction.

Oliver: for i) worst sartorial faux-pas of the day. Tiger camo scrum cap! Seriously, what were you thinking?, ii) quickest to exhibit signs of post-match inebriation and iii) first Nelly O’Connors terrace bare-arse display of 2009.

Alistair: for runner-up in the worst sartorial faux-pas of the day competition. Those boots may be as comfortable as a condom, but they actually do look like they are ribbed for your pleasure……

Sam: for i) winning the MTRFC Man of the Match nomination from TMR and ii) regaining MTRFC dignity by downing his MOTM pint in a more manly fashion that the TMR Man of the Match.

Dave: for i) dusting off the boots, waxing the legs, and playing with aplomb after a long rugby hiatus, and ii) uttering the phrase “when I was your age….” more than anyone else on the field.

Mark O’Connor: for i) surviving his first senior game intact despite some initial reservations (“Jeezuz Dad, look at the size of toze fellaz”), ii) throwing the hospital pass to end all hospital passes to Danny (see above for repercussions) and iii) playing for Sedbergh the following day when most of us were incapable of walking without assistance.

The “Newbies”: for i) committing to a new sport with such enthusiasm, ii) playing in a competitive game with a ridiculously short amount of training and iii) coming back to training the week after ii.

Waterboys/Ballboys (Kody Greenfield, Tom Morrissey, plus the Innes and Badke boys): for keeping the fluids flowing, the kicking tees coming (for TMR conversions…. and recovering wayward balls (from Jamie Jack’s penalty attempt….)

MTRFC Injury Watch:

Player:..........Body Part:..........Cause:..........Spousal Grief:

Alistair..........Eye/Nose...........Punch ............Unknown
Warren.........Mouth/Lip...........Hand-off........Confirmed
Mike.............Neck.................Old Age.........Negative (spotted receiving neck rub)

All The Above..Feet.................New Boots.....“You bought new boots??”

Editorial Note: All comments and opinions expressed in this article are the views of the Author alone, and do not reflect the opinion of MTRFC, apart from any inferences to Cardiff Blues having being robbed by Leicester Tigers in the semi-final of the Heineken Cup, which cannot be categorized as personal conjecture, but as an undeniable fact…..
