Hi everyone,
As we haven't been in touch for a while, this is just to let you know that everything is moving along well with our various "projects" in Laos.
Here's a report on a few of them.....
Somphet
Somphet, the first young person we assisted with rehabilitation through COPE, is still staying with Lanou so that he can attend school in Luang Prabang. We help out with his living expenses and school fees.
He is doing so well at computer classes that the school now has him teaching a beginners class. He is very busy and studies 7 days a week, as he also attends a government-run program teaching disabled people how to fix computers.
He has just spent another week with COPE at the Luang Prabang hospital were he was fitted with a better-fitting leg. An amputee's skin etc. continues to settle around the amputation site for a number of months. This therefore means that the person needs to be regularly re-assessed and fitted with a prosthesis that properly fits their requirements.
Nambak Orphanage
We have purchased 400 math sets for Nambak Orphanage. And we have purchased hammers and saws so that each student in the woodwork class has his / her own set of tools. This should help them with all of their various woodwork projects, including the required animal pens (see below). (Thanks Joe!)
We are paying for the materials required for pig-pens and chicken houses to be built by the Nambak students. And a lovely NZ couple who work (in the area of agriculture) in Luang Prabang and often assist the orphanages/schools are going to Nambak next weekend to discuss the training of staff and pupils in pig and chicken farming.
The orphanage set up a fish-breeding pond and filled it with fingerlings. They have told us that the fish are growing well and are almost ready to be harvested and put in the cooking pot! So we are also purchasing a fishing net for them.
We are also providing the "usual" packages of soap, shampoo and toothbrushes, etc.
To ensure that life still has some fun time in it, we have purchased 25 soccer balls for the orphanage.
And finally, an organization called The Pencil Promise has put together a package of books and pencils and will be delivering them this week.
Thank you to all the wonderful people who donated clothes
From Ruth, Chris, Bryan and Leila - and all the children with happy faces in the following photos.
A huge thank you to all the kind and generous people who went out of their way to bring children's clothes to Ruth's place in Luang Prabang in the past few months for distribution to less fortunate children. A particular thanks to a couple of people (you know who you are!) who maximized their check-in luggage allowance and went to the effort of bringing bags full of clothes!
Recently, Bryan and Leila (from Butterfly Children) called by to pick up the bags of clothes. Here are some photos taken by Bryan while the clothes were being distributed to the children. Excitement, awe, happiness, joy... every emotion is shown in their various faces.

Letter from Bryan and Leila
"Here are some pictures of us sharing the clothes that your friends generously donated to the people here. These pictures are from three villages in the Muang Sing area.
The KOICA women in the pictures are volunteers from Korea who have been coming from Luang Namtha visit us on the weekends. One of them teaches kindergarten teachers here. They help teach crafts at the Butterfly Children's Development Center and in the villages when we visit.
Thank you very much for all that you are doing to help.
Best Regards,
Bryan and Leila"
