I was just curious as to how hard your routines are and the requirements for weapons. Also, Would it be possible to do color guard as well as a professional winter guard such as O2, Onyx, or Juxta? Or do you also have a winter guard team?

Rachel R., that is exciting that you're wanting to experience Miami and make a change and join colorguard! It is totally possible for you to join without much experience. In fact, a few of our current members, including myself, played instruments in our high school bands and joined Miami's guard. We welcome all different skill levels so don't allow the fact of not having prior experience affect your choice. We'd be more than happy to have you join! I do encourage you to practice some over the year and summer just so you're not totally lost once you arrive though. Good luck! -Ashley

Hi, I'm applying to Miami for the Fall 2012 semester and I was thinking of joining the marching band if accepted. I currently play flute in my high school marching band, but I've always secretly wanted to join color guard. Is it possible to audition and make the guard even without any previous experience? Thanks!

Well, there is a general meeting for all members of the MUMB in 007 Presser at 4:30 after registration, not 6:30 and everyone attends. After that there is a dinner break and then the band goes into music rehersal at 7. The guard meets up and goes over what our schedule is going to be like for the season and other logistics. So it's 4:30 in 007 Presser and definitely be there.

Hi, I have just one more questio. Well, it's a few in one comment. band camp starts at six thirty pm, right? And do we all meet in presser hall or does the guard just go ahead and meet in the performing arts center?
8/5/2010 4:39:38 PM - 003044696220
Thank you so much Miranda! I definately will be on time. I planned my classes before band :)

To answer your question Kaitie... It's fine to go to Miami Hamilton and do marching band at the same time as long as your willing to travel to Oxford and make it to practice on time, it's perfectly fine. I went to Miami Hamilton my first two years of college and did guard both years to it's fine, you just can't sign up for the class until Band Camp. We'll explain everything at band camp just make sure you are at least signed up for that.
If you have any more questions feel free to email me dutterml@muohio.edu or our guard advisor Megan at taylormk@muohio.edu .

Hello! I will be attending miami hamilton, and I was wondering if a student from the regional schools can participate in band. I love colorguard and I dont want to give it up yet
7/23/2010 11:37:03 PM - fb:628921120
Hi everyone! I'm Caitlyn, a member of the MUMB Color Guard since last season and I wanted to answer your questions.
Jennifer-You can find a few of the performances from last season at vimeo.com and searching "mumb"
Cori-The class shouldn't be a problem. You can submit an absence request form with the band for the days you will miss for the entire season. As long as the band staff knows, it shouldn't be a problem.
Can't wait to see everyone at camp next month!
7/10/2010 9:27:33 PM - 003042335565
Hi, my name is Cori. I scheduled all of my classes before I found out when the band practices, so I have class during band on tuesdays and thursdays. Will that be a problem?
5/10/2010 8:25:15 PM - 003032501653
do you have any example videos of your performances?
4/25/2010 12:48:31 PM - 002061860146
Katrina,
We practice from 4:20 to 5:50 Monday-Friday with the full marching band. Twice a week we have sectionals right after full band practice until about 7:30. We will also practice on game days a little bit before the game to just do a run through/make any final adjustments before our pregame and halftime performances.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail myself at newporsl@muohio.edu or the guard advisor Megan Kuykendoll at taylormk@muohio.edu!

What is the practice schedule like during the year?

Hi Wetlyne!
You will sign up for band camp before auditions because auditions are actually during band camp. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi I'm Wetlyne. I was wondering if I had to sign up for band camp before or after auditions
2/26/2010 3:14:05 AM - 001012950602
Hi Meg!
To answer your questions, in general, college/university marching bands do not compete like high school bands do. Most of our performances happen at football games, MU events and sometimes exhibitions at HS competitions or things like Bengal's football games.
We rehearse with the whole band for about an hour and a half Monday through Friday with sectional rehearsals twice a week in addition to that. We have auditions during band camp in August and involve some basic skills.
Let me know if you have any further questions, and email is probably the best way to reach me at taylormk@muohio.edu
Hope to hear back from you soon!
Megan K.

I love your Color Guard! It's so inspiring that I am considering attending MU when I graduate HS. I do have a quick question for you though: when you guys attend competitions, what marks do you usually receive? And also, how difficult is it to get into the MU Guard and what are the seasons and practice hours like? I know, I have a lot of questions, haha, but I hope you're able to respond :) Thanks a bunch! Go Red Hawks!

Hi Kayla,
Auditions are held during band camp each year (mid August). If you have any specific questions ahead of time you can e-mail the guard advisor Megan (taylormk@muohio.edu) or myself (newporsl@muohio.ed). I can either answer your questions or pass it on to next year's captain.

when do you do auditions for next season?
8/24/2009 2:16:51 AM - 001012950602
Hi Regina,
Currently, there are no specific scholarships for guard members, but there are some scholarships that are merit-based through the band (guard eligible). Those scholarships are given out at the end of each band season based upon performance during the season.
Please feel free to email me personally if you have any further questions at

Macy's - New York, NY.
The rainy weather, the realllllly long bus ride; going to bed at midnight and waking up at 2 am for a practice run of the Santa Show in front of producers; it was all worth it. All of the hard work and numerous practices paid off as the announcer introduced the Miami University Marching Band (from OHIO) into the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! Between the 3 million people lined along the crowded streets of NYC to the 50 million across the nation watching from home on television, there was an incredible audience. The guard dazzled the crowds along the parade route in the Big Apple, and the show at Herald Square was a success. The color guard got a fairly large amount of television time, too! Marching in Macy's was a once in a lifetime experience that we are all very lucky for having: what an opportunity! This season has been a memorable one, and hopefully there will be many more to come! Congratulations and best wishes to the seniors who will be leaving us after this year. Your influence, leadership, and dedication has left a lasting impact on all of us at MUMB. Thanks for everything, hope to stay in touch! Love & Honor, go band, Danielle :)
Less than ten days!
There's only nine days until we leave for New York! Everyone is working extra hard in preparation for our performance in the Macy's Parade. This past week we practiced our parade marching and learned the routines we will marching to. We also worked on the end to our New York show. And although the weather was pretty chilly this week, the girls are bubbling with excitement for Macy's :)
Love and Honor,
Shannon
Getting Ready For Macy's
We are halfway through a week of preparing for Macy's. The band has been practicing at Millet to work on our Macy's show and some parade marching. We are having fun learning our parade routines and are working hard to perfect the Macy's show. The guard is also working on finishing our New York Show that we will be preforming next Wednesday. All the guard members are getting excited for the Macy's trip as it slowly gets closer. Only 8 more practices til Macy's :)
Love and Honor,
Mallory
BAND FORMAL!
Last night a majority of the guard members took a break from our busy schedules of classes, band practices and rain-soaked football games to get fancy and dance-y at this year's band formal. Band Formal is a night of fun, dinner and dancing held in a hotel in West Chester (a suburb of Cincinnati) for all of the members of the band and auxiliaries and their guests. Dinner is served, Awards for Best Marcher/Spinner, Most Devoted/Improved, etc. are given out for each section, and then there's a DJ who plays music for dancing. Congrats to the guard girls who won awards, and thanks to all the girls who made it out to formal, because it was a great night, and a great way to let off some steam so we can crack down and get focused preparing for Macy's!

Happy Halloween Homecoming
What a weekend it was for the ladies of the Miami Color Guard past and present. After a long week of practice, we finally saw our hard work pay off. Starting the day off right with some well deserved team bonding, we headed off to the homecoming parade. There, we gave our first showing of our Macy's routine. It was a fun time for all to see the crowd's excitement. Another exciting aspect of the weekend was watching the alumni band perform before us. There were three guard alumni in the mix who did wonderful through their performance. All and all it was a great day of performing and spending time with the nothing less than lovely guard family.
Love&Honor and Happy Halloween <3 Celia
Hard Work is Paying Off!!
We've been working hard for a very long time on "Seeing Red" and we're performing it once again this upcoming weekend at the Mason Invitational, so be on the lookout!!! The weather's been a little chilly and a tad windy, but we just keep trucking through. We also learned that we are the Santa band for Macy's!!! How exciting!!!! We've been working on our Macy's performance this past week, and we've started our "NYC" halftime show!! We just keep working hard, and it's all looking fantastic! We'll see you at the Invitational this weekend ;) Love and Honor ~Laura
Pretty and Polished
We are working on polishing up our "Seeing Red" show this week and everything is looking wonderful! The beautiful fall weather is cooperating with us and making our practices perfect. Relatively no wind makes us happy guard girls. Everyone is super pumped for the football game this weekend because we are playing Army! Go Miami! Love and Honor! Ashley ^_^
Beautiful Beginning
Last Saturday we had our half first performance where we got to work with so many people from many different high school bands. It was definitely a lot of fun. This week, we're working hard on our show entitled "Seeing Red," and we're eager to preform it at half time on Saturday!
A great year is about to begin, are you a part of it?
We've got a great couple of shows lined up this year! Big plans are in the works for some new equipment as well as tweaking our uniforms so that we're in tip top shape for Macy's!!
Hope you're as excited as I am to see the great shows we have in store :)

Only one home game left?
Wow! The season has just flown by. We just performed the Carmen show for the first time today, with a rifle line for the first song. I am so excited about this, since it really represents how we as a group can work together. Some members had prior rifle experience, while others had none at all, but we were able to make it work for everyone. With some hard work and a good attitude, just about anything is possible. Now that we've got that under our belt, I'd love to see more rifle features in the future.
Carmen is up next!
We are performing the Queen show once again this weekend. It's been so amazing to see the crowds get into the music! Also, we have started working on the Carmen show for the game on the 23rd.
Band Camp, Days Away!
We're getting ready for band camp to start! Sunday everyone arrives and we have our first official rehearsal. This season, we've got a Queen show first, followed by Carmen for the last couple of games.
Hope to see you in the stands!
Megan
BIG NEWS! Macy's Thanksgiving Parade 2011
The Miami University Marching Band will be participating in the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!!! We will travel as a group to New York City for the 2nd time, and we're all SUPER excited.
"Off" season is anything but off!
Even though it's not marching season, the MUMB Colorguard is still up and running. During the spring semester, we have fun, less formal rehearsals once a week to brush up on skills and learn new routines! Rumor is that we've got a group dinner in the works too :)
We're already planning for next year, with auditions during band camp in August, so GET READY for FALL 2010!!
Let me know if you have ANY questions!
