Hello everyone, well its been a while since I have written anything, but here I am now. I have started a new job and have been working since Jan 4th, yes I am back in the world of the working class again, YEEHA, Its been virtually 2 years of unemployment and saving all gone, but now I am back and I cant tell you how much I enjoy being back at work. I am now the Manufacturing Quality Engineer for interior for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and the new for 2011 Durango. I am stationed out of (CTC) Chrysler Tech Center , but work full time at (JNAP) Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, where the vehicles will be built built. I am very familiar with JNAP as I worked there for more than 4 1/2 years before being let go in December of 2007, I was at that time the (PVE) Plant Vehicle Engineer for the exterior of the Cherokee and the Commander. Numerous people have come up to me and welcomed me back, which made me feel good.
I hope everyone is well and I wish you all a very happy and healthy new year, I will write again soon and let you all know how it is going, take care, very best wishes to you all, Chris.
Hello everyone, well I am back now in the United States after a 13 week stay at my Mothers home in Basildon Essex . I was helping out in the family business and spending some quality time with my Dear Mother, and that was Priceless. I had a great time seeing my fiends and family again. And enjoying some good old traditional food, pie mash, and jellied eels, and of course English ale, ah yes English Ale, Adanams Ale, and London Pride is the best.
Anyway I am back now, getting an ear full from the Trouble and strife ( Wife ) I am now working my way through the honey do list.,
I couldn’t write anything while I was there, as the web connection was very poor and could only manage my e mails, and that was it.
I really missed my children and they were pleased to see me back. The weather there was extraordinarily good for the time of year and only experienced a few days of rain, although one day was hail stones the size of quarters. The video of that will soon be on U tube :o)
I did manage to celebrate my Mothers and Brother in laws birthday, and I was also there to see Guy Fawkes Night November 5th for the first time since I left some 30 years ago.
Just in case your not familiar with Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Night is an annual celebration in on the evening of 5 November. It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to destroy the Houses of Parliament, in London, capital of England. Festivities are centred on the use of fireworks and the lighting of bonfires. And burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes. It is primarily marked in the United Kingdom where, by an Act of Parliament called the Thanksgiving Act, it was compulsory until 1859, to celebrate the deliverance of the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland; but it is also Newfoundland, South Africa, and parts of the Caribbean.
Bonfire Night was celebrated in until the mid- to late 1970s, when sale and public use of fireworks was made illegal and the celebration was effectively abolished. It is also celebrated in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda.
Best wishes to everyone and I hope you all have a great Xmas.
Hi Everyone, Just a quick update to let those of you who don’t know, I have finally booked my flight back to the Mother land. I will leave Detroit Aug 19th at 1.30 pm and arrive back in England at Gatwick airport Aug 20th at around 7 am. I will get a train from there to take me to Basildon Essex, where my family live.
I will be staying for 10 weeks this time, so that will be some real quality time with the family and my dear Mum. I will also be there for my Birthday Sept.14th, so that will be nice too.
The only part of this trip that I will be sad about is my young Sons Football season, I will miss that, so that will suck. He is exceptionally good and I expect him to excel this year as he did last year. He has got bigger and looks much stronger too, so that will help. Oh by the way were talking American football, not soccer, if I haven’t already mentioned in previous memos he is extremely fast and is the running back. He has a really good kick too, so they have him kicking and punting as well, and sometimes he also plays monster in defense.
Its a nice sunny warm day today, so I will be spending the day relaxing on the patio and maybe do a sudoku puzzle or two. :o) speak again soon.
OK that’s it for now, IL update you all again in England, take care and enjoy your life, Chris.
I know I haven’t wrote for a while sorry, but just to let all who don’t know, I am now unemployed again. Yes I was laid off from a min. wage job at Kroger, night work stacking shelves and after only a few weeks. I guess the good news is no more night work, which completely screwed up my internal clock, and for the past week or so have been sleeping in till mid day and falling asleep in the afternoons as well, go figure. Anyway I am now going to return to England for a while and work with the firm, the only problem now is finding a flight I can afford, I called this morning and the cheapest flight they have to Gatwick in July is $1,300 bucks, ouch, that too much, so now I have to think of what to do next. Got any suggestions, speak soon take care, Chris.
Well, as most of you know by now, I am working night work at Kroger’s stacking shelves. – , Its hard work and a thankless task, when this has to be done literally everyday after the general public come in, buy tons of produce and in there frenzy to fill there carts up, disarray what’s left there. I have a new found respect for the stackers of shelves.
I am still waiting for a call from to say they have work for me there, before booking a flight to go back and spend some valuable time with my Mother. The only problem is its getting late in the year and ’s football season starts at the end of August and I really want to be here to see his progression. My idea was to stay in for at least 3 months, but as time goes on it’s getting less and less.
Anyway I hope all you guys are doing well, IL write again soon, take care,
very best wishes to you all, Chris.
Well things have happened since I last spoke, My Home Depot Job is no more, I was let go because I helped myself to a bottle of water from the cooler cabinet at the check out. I had worked for 5 days on the trot over the holiday weekend and was extremely tired and thirsty from all the heavy lifting of bags of stone mulch and topsoil etc, so I took it upon myself to grab the first bottle of water I could find, they said I stole it.
So that job is history, the black cloud is still over my head. I have been offered a night work job at Kroger but am now looking to return to England to work for a while, I’m not sure exactly when I will leave but its imminent. Its bitter sweet for me, as a will greatly miss my children here but looking forward to seeing my Mother and my other family again. Not sure how long I will be in England, but I will keep you all informed and let you know what Im doing there. Take care speak soon, Love and best wishes, Chris.
Hello one and all, just a quick update to let you all know what’s happening this end.
I am scheduled to work all over the Memorial Day weekend, which sucks, but it is what it is, I guess all the permies working there want those days off, so I will be at good old Home Depot pounding the concrete for hours , from Thursday the 21st May through to Monday the 25th.:o(
Good news, the weather is beginning to change for the better and will be in the 70’s today and by the end of this week be in the 80’s yeeha. It feels so good after such a loooong winter.
Got the sprinklers up and running yesterday and it’s a miracle, there all working properly, that’s a first.
Have been playing poker a lot lately on facebook, its just pretend money, but if I say so myself I think I am getting better at it. The only draw back is you can’t see the actual people you’re playing against, reading there mannerisms is impossible. The players are from all over the Globe which makes it interesting and if desired you can chat with them at the same time your playing, that’s if they speak English of course, its good fun and relaxing, with a beer or 3. :o), you should try it.
I went into my local liquor store the other day to buy some more lottery tickets and to dream of what I would do with the money when I win it, unfortunately they gave me the wrong bloody numbers again, I bitched them out of course. :o) But they say, you have to be in it to win it, but I know I have more chance of the ceiling in my bedroom falling on me than winning the big one.
Anyway have a great weak, speak soon, very best wishes to you all, Chris.
Hi all, Sorry I haven’t written anything of late, got a job now as most of you know and it’s taking up a lot of my time. I started the job at Home Depot on April 20th and for the first few days after orientation on the Monday , had to take some 28 WBT (web based training) courses , everything from safety training to fork lift equipment handling. I am working in the garden department , so I had to know about lawn mowers, tractors, fertilizers , pesticides, cleaning equipment etc etc. a lot to know, It was intimidating for the first couple of days dealing with the customers questions, but yesterday was the first day I started to feel more comfortable and not like a fish out of water. It’s good to actually be working again even if it is only Home depot. The weather is getting warmer now and I spend a lot of time working outside in the plant and landscaping area. I even water the flowers on occasions which I find to be therapeutic. Will write again soon have a great week, Chris.
Just thought I would mention, that I have been offered a part time job at Home Depot. It’s a summer position in the garden department, selling everything from plants to landscaping equipment. It will be for a max of 90 days, subject to a drug screening, a background check and 3 days of orientation. If all goes well, I should be working before the end of this month, which means my trip to Merry old England will be delayed until the end of that time period. As I am not eligible for unemployment so the extra money will come in very handy and hopefully help pay off some bills and thereafter I will be able to claim unemployment again. So if any of you want to buy a tractor come and see me at Home Depot, haha:o) have a great week. Chris.
Hi, it’s me and it’s almost Friday yet again. Friday’s come round quick don’t they.
Well I’ve been working all this week with Gary painting and decorating his house in Roseville, Gary and his family have officially moved out and are now living in the house in Sterling Heights. Once this home is fixed up it will be rented out.
The weather is nice today, 66 deg.f. and sunny, but that’s all gonna change in the next few days, we can’t expect to have good weather everyday, not in Michigan. I heard it may snow again, it won’t settle though and the temp will then climb to a staggering 50 deg.f by the middle of next week.
You know I was waiting for a call from England to tell me that the contract is signed and the work is now ready for me to start, well instead I got a call from Home Depot, asking me to go there for an interview, for a summer position in the garden department, its just a 3 month job, but it will allow me to claim unemployment during the winter period, so I have to go for it. I have of course informed my Mother in England to tell her that my visit is delayed until this job is out the way. I was really looking forward to seeing my Mother again and staying with her and consuming plate loads of pie mash and jellied eels and washing it all down with good old English Ale, Oh well.
I was also looking forward to hanging out with my Best friend Graham Calkin and going to his gym for work outs after a long hard day at work and sucking down some well deserved Ale thereafter.. take care one and all, have a great weekend, love and best wishes, ChrisVernal Equinox, First Day of Spring, good morning everyone, was cold yesterday 32 deg.f. but the weather has definitely changed for the better, still cold at this time though 25 deg. will top out at 40 today, but im feeling gooood. "The spring has sprung the glass is ris I wonder where the birdies is."
Have a great day, Chris.
Hello everyone, A very Happy Wednesday to you all. Well I think yesterday was the turning point for the warmer weather, thank God, it hit 70 deg.f, it didn’t break the record of 75 set back in 1945 but it was great to actually sit outside by the lake and watch the ducks flirting with each other on the water and the squirrels running around. Ah yes water instead of a block of bloody ice, I feel like I’ve come out of hibernation, I feel so much better.
Anyway, I bought 6 corbels for my bar I’m building and spent most of the day outside staining them ready to assemble, today. The Minwax stain I have been using on the other parts didn’t soak into the wood, the wood is so hard, I believe its Maple, so I bought some Gel Stain recommended by Minwax for this type of hard wood and applied that, it stays on the surface and cures after 8-10 hours. I added some pics to show you what corbels are prior to staining, don’t ask me why they don’t just call them supports. I’m not completely happy with the way they turned out though, and may try to touch them up a bit after assembly. Of course I will take more pics and add them to the bar folder after assembly.
Still no work for poor old me, I heard that Home depot is hiring, but I’m hanging on in the hope that I can return to soon and work there for a while, and of course stay with my dear Mum again. I will then look in earnest to get a job when I return.
OK That’s it for now take care, Chris.
Hello everyone, Well its Friday again, TGIF. It’s my Father’s Birthday today Friday 13th; He died a day after my Mothers Birthday. I expect my Mother and my Sister Sharon and her Husband Harry will visit his grave site this weekend, its one day in the year the people at the grave yard get out the book with his name in it. Happy Birthday Dad, hope you’re doing well on the other side.
I have done all I can on my bar at home at this time, I need now two more cabinets , that my Friend Mark will make and then I can get the granite guys in to measure for the bar top and foot rest, oh and the counter top behind the bar above the refrigerator.
I’m still waiting patiently for a call from telling me that the job is ready for me to start. It’s getting now to where I will be pounding the pavement again soon looking for some kind of work here.
OK let me see, what sort of work have I done in the past, I’ve been a Bar Owner, a Health Club Owner, and at one time I was the next in line for the door man Job at Tycoons, a local strip joint on Groesbeck, where I used to frequent every available opportunity, they served great food there and I knew most of the girls that worked there, but I digress, lets get back to the work I have done list, I’ve been a:-
Security Guard,
Dept Collector,
Bouncer,
Bodyguard,
Weight Training Instructor,
Painter / Decorator,
Landscaping and turf Layer.
Wall Cavity and Attic Insulator,
General construction Laborer.
Senior Automotive Designer and Engineer,
Come to think of it I could probably put my hand to pretty much anything given the opportunity, but I am getting a little old for some of the jobs I’ve done in the past.
Anyway that’s it for now, have a great weekend guys, speak more next week.
Chris x.
My Oldest Son Gary
was born on Valentines Day, the year the government changed the monetary system from pounds shillings and pence to decimals. The pound originally was split into 240 increments of one penny.
,
8 half crowns in one pound,
10 two shilling pieces in one pound,
20 shillings in a pound,
40 sixpences in one pound
240 pennies in one pound.
480 half pennies in one pound
960 farthings in one pound.
There were 10 shilling notes, one pound notes, 5 pound notes, 10 pound notes and 20 pound notes. It sounds complicated, but everyone was familiar with the monetary system.
The government decided to change to decimals in 1971, 100 pence to the pound.
They did away with (discontinued) the one pound note, the 10 shilling note, the half crown, the six pence, the penny and the half penny and finally the farthing.
They introduced a new one pound coin, a 50 pence coin, 20 pence coin, a 10 pence coin a 5 pence coin and a one pence coin. This obviously was a simpler system but initially confused the heck out of a lot of people, especially the older people, who were I’m sure ripped off many times during the transition. The cost of living virtually increased by 240 % over night with shopkeepers changing there prices on all there items.
Anyway getting back to , his Mother did not re-marry and is currently living in a town called Dovercourt in . Gary is here in the States , he was allowed to come over on a fiancé visa and married a girl from one of the local banks, her name is Michelle, he met Michelle, while he was on vacation here and at the time I owned a bar and grille in Warren Michigan called Mitchell Obriens. Michelle used to go there to have lunch on occasions, they met fell in love and the rest is history. They now live here and have two children, Kennedy 4 years old and 2 years old. Michelle has a Son from a previous relationship, a Boy named he is 13 years old. They currently live at 14 mile and Gratiot in but are in the process of moving to a house at 18 ½ and Mound in . The house used to belong to Michelle’s Mother who unfortunately passed away on . Gary and I repainted the inside and put some new base molding done throughout the first floor. They should be moving in sometime at the end of this month. The new house is really nice and has plenty of room for there family, they should be happy there..
I just wanted to mention that , my youngest Son has found his niche; he is very good at Football, American football that is. He played Soccer for several seasons and was a good team player for the Future Stars team but he didn’t really take to it.
He is currently playing La-Crosse until the football season starts up again. He loves La-Crosse and it keeps him fit and ready.
For all you Football fans out there, take note and keep your eyes and ears open for Austin Mitchell, for when he goes to college I’m sure he will be recognized as someone special, his team mates nick named him QUICK SIX, he has endless stamina, he’s a running back, and in one game ran for over 220 yards, but he can also plays monster in defense and is very strong in the tackle. He has a great right foot and is also the kicker and punter for the team, and last season was punting almost 50 yards, and during practice was kicking with the varsity team and at the age of 10 that’s pretty good.
I have added a folder of his football pictures and as he progresses I will add more pictures to it.
Hi everyone, 30 deg and sunny today, saw my oldest Son Gary this morning and helped him put back the stove and refrigerator at his home in . He had them moved when the new Kitchen floor was put down. He will be moving into this home at the end of this week. I think they have plans to rent out the one there currently in.
I have added a link to my favorites list if anyone is interested to take a look, it’s a Beatles web site opened by Graham Calkin my very best friend in . Some years ago, Graham used to be a DJ, he is currently working at Ford Motor Company as a Computer Analyst/Engineer, and he is an expert when it comes to computers, but is also an authority on music especially the Beatles, who were without doubt the greatest band ever. Take a look at his site and see what you think, he would welcome any questions I’m sure.

have a great day. Chris.
Hi Everyone, Well its Monday again 27 deg for a high today and sunny, its cold but it’s a nice day.
I have been on line to see about flights to England , I’m thinking of leaving the first week in March. I’ve been looking for work here, but there’s really nothing about at this time. Hopefully things will change for the better when I return.
For example, my Son Gary went for a job the other day at a local car wash, they wanted a car drier, he would have to stand outside and dry off the cars as they come out, it paid $8.50 an hour. He told me that when he got there, there was a guy sitting at a desk and in front of him a stack of resumes and lined up in front of the desk was 13 people hoping to get the job. He said he just got in his car and left. Filling in a resume for cleaning cars, go figure.
Hang on, I do have something to look forward to, The Batchelor is on TV tonight.
I would like you all to know that I am fortunate to have a long distant friend called Shortarmguy , although we have never met in person, I have had the pleasure of getting to know this man over the last 7 years or more after first being introduced to his web site. I have continued to visit his site regularly ever since and have spoken to him on the telephone many times. I have been extremely impressed and entertained by the content of his site, and have nothing but positive things to say about him as a person, and hope that one day we can meet, shoot the breeze and have a couple of cold beers together.
Please take the time to look for yourself and draw your own conclusions, smile, enjoy the ride and have a great day.

Hello everyone, Its now 12.35 pm our time and guess what , yes its snowing yet again, they say 3-6 inches today and I can well believe it , as its really beginning to come down.
I just looked to see how my football team West Ham United is doing against Bolton Wanderers, and we lost 2-1 :o( well they were playing away.
Well I finished making the shelves for the bar area, I put some pics in the folder for you to see, I have put some bottles on them to show how it will be eventually, but first I have to cover the wall above each shelf with a mirror and maybe a beer emblem of some kind, when I do I will take more pics so you can see how it is progressing. I’m now waiting on my friend Mark, who is a carpenter to make a couple of cupboards that will go either side of the fridge below the shelves, and after there put in the final thing will be to add the bar top and foot rest together with a top above the fridge, the two cupboards will help support the top. A few pics here and there and that should do it.
I heard from Lee, my sister’s daughter’s husband in that I should be able to go back and work there within the next few weeks for our company Property Maintenance. Lee and my Brother in law Harry are co owners of the company. Harry is My Sisters Husband. I will be doing some painting for them to help pay some of the bills here. I will leave here for within the next month and I will let you all know how that goes. It will be nice to see my Dear Mother again and spend some valuable time with her. I do miss the English food especially pie mash and liquor and jellied eels, oh and some excellent draft Beer, but its going to be difficult for me to leave my Children and that includes Gary of course who I have been seeing regularly. I miss my other children too, bur don’t get to see them much.
Upon my return to I would like to take a trip to to see my other Son Bradley and his family, they live in Allen Texas, His Wife’s Apryle and his two daughters Madison and Olivia and his Son Tyler. who is currently living in with his Mother in Japan. Tylers Mother is in the Airforce and is currently stationed in Japan, Brad gets to have his Son stay during the summer period, so it will be nice to see him again. I think he’s 13 years old now which means he has and aunt and uncle who is younger than he is, Alexis and Austin. April has taken Austin to Lacrosse and I’m here looking after Alexis and waiting to see how deep the snow will finish up,
Have a great weekend one and all, Love Chris.
Well guess what, yes its snowing again. There saying 1-6 inches of snow today, now theres a big difference from 1 inch to 6 inches, im hoping I dont have to plough the driveway again.
I have spent all morning working on the shelves for my Bar area, Il post some pics when I get them up.
Gary My Son Just called and I will meet him tomorrow morning for a work out, we normally meet at the Powerhouse gym close to his house, it takes me 30 minutes or so to get there otherwise im sure i would try and get more than 1 work out a week in. I max out now at about 240 lbs bench press, I remember the time when I used to warm up with that weight, oh the good old days when I was strong. Gary does well he is very strong, pound for pound he takes some beating.
I cant wait for this weather to break and we get into our usual 6 weeks of Summer :o) before we have to endure this all over again. I would move out of state if I could. I much prefer the warmer climate. have a great day, speak soon.
Well its 2.45 pm, its rainiing and dull outside, but at least its 40 deg. which is warmer than it has been. The weather this winter has been extraordinary, with snow snow and more snow and temps in the single digits. I cant wait for the spring.
I have expressed an interest in returning to England soon to stay with my dear Mother for a while and at the same time hopefully do a bit of work and send some dosh back here. As many of you know, i have been unemployed since December of 2007, and im going crazy sitting at home, there is no work about and knowone is hiring at this time. it will be a pleasant change of pace to sit with my Mum and do a few things around her house . Maybe theres some minor repairs that i can do. I will miss my two young children Alexis who is 6 and Austin is 11, they were both Born in December. Alexis December the 21st and Austin Dec 23rd. Yes December is an expensive time of the year for me. I will miss my weekly workout too with Gary my oldest Son, he lives at 14 and Gratiot so he's not too far away.
Ive been fixing up my basement and its almost complete, I have started building a bar which has taken a long time as I have a limited amount of money to buy wood with, but its coming along nicely. Il add a folder and show you some of the basement pics. including the cinema set up, with a really nice projector and a 9 foot screen, Rather than an actual screen I decided to paint the wall, which works out better as the screen can curl and distort and look nasty. The paint I used for the wall was made up of 4 types of paint, a base, a white, silver metallic and a purl essence. all mixed together to make the screen, and if I say so myself looks great, the picture is a true 1080 P HD, perfect for those sporting events and dancing with the stars :o).
