Youth Green Jobs-Turning Today's Youth in Crisis into Tomorrows Heroes

Youth Green Jobs Sonoma (YGJS) is Positioned to Create Green Pathways to Success for Students

Youth Green Jobs Sonoma is a green vocational trade/educational/empowerment program of NBIGT which provides bilingual/bicultural under-served students, young adults and their families with introductory courses to clean/green technologies.

YGJS employs a "hands-on," learn-by-doing (on the job) experience that simulates the workplace environment and has real life workplace expectations.  The main objective of the Youth Green Jobs Sonoma curriculum is to inspire and educate a new "Green Collar" workforce opening the doors to a fulfilling employment experience.

Learning in a Highly Supportive Environment

Most if not all of the youth and young adult participants come from under-served, disadvantaged communities of color and therefore they will bring with them varying levels of low self-esteem.

Instructors, support staff (including volunteers) parents and students will operate in a highly supportive environment with positive feedback for each participant, including counseling and rehabilitation services as needed.

The curriculum emphasizes the "assets" of each person with frequent chances for all to identify areas of progress and strength.

YGJS Principles: A "Whole Person" Approach

YGJS operates on several established principles as the basis for our green vocational-trade prep program, andeducational-empowerment training.

A whole person approach is implemented throughout the program.  This approach focuses on eliminating personal barriers to success as well as gaining the technical skills needed. Our curriculum integrates technical skills with sessions in areas such as time management, goal setting with emphasis on critical thinking, budgeting, resume writing, workplace conduct, utilizing community resources and working in small groups.

Our program assists youth in developing their self-esteem and self-reliance.  This process is important in taking each person from "I can't" to "I can" as they journey through the program.

Cooperative learning is highly emphasized throughout the entire program. Youth work together in groups in a non-competitive atmosphere.  They work with others who have different talents, ages, and experience.  This will enable them to help each other and increases their learning ability. Heavy emphasis will be place on kinesthetic learning by doing instruction.
