Wildcat field hockey gets a happy ending

LONE GOAL IN FINAL MINUTE DECIDED CHAMPIONSHIP
GREENSBORO - Somebody call Frank Capra.

Anyone needing the screenplay with a happy ending to a bittersweet story sure to cause a tear or two, needs only to check out East Chapel Hill's latest N.C. Field Hockey Association state championship.

Playing on neutral field at Greensboro Day School, East Chapel Hill defeated Winston-Salem's R.J. Reynolds 1-0 last Saturday for the Wildcats' fourth consecutive title in high school field hockey.

Despite East dominating play throughout the match, the game was scoreless until the 'Cats got a game-winning goal in the final minute from senior Margo Richardson, whose beloved father Wayne Richardson had died barely 72 hours before after a long, debilitating illness.

NCFHA state tournament features rematches

BY W.E. WARNOCK, ewarnock@newsobserver.com
CHAPEL HILL - Rematches will be the order of the day for the second round of the N.C. High School Field Hockey Association playoffs.

Seeded No. 8 in the NCFHA's 16-team bracket, Chapel Hill (6-11) will play No. 1 West Forsyth (11-8) on Tuesday. It marks the fourth meeting this year between the Tigers and Titans. West Forsyth won each of the previous three matches by one-goal margins, the first one being decided in overtime in the Play 4 the Cure tournament at Cary Academy.

Chapel Hill has been in three consecutive state finals since winning the 2007 championship.

No. 4 East Chapel Hill (16-2) and No. 5 Carrboro (16-3) will meet for the third time when they play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Wildcat Stadium. They split their regular-season matches this year, each winning on their home field.

Carrboro defeated East Chapel Hill for the first time ever with a 1-0 decision on Sept. 28. One week later, East Chapel Hill avenged that loss with a 3-2, double-OT win at Wildcat Stadium.
