Class updates & news

Candy Bar Fundraiser due Monday

I hope everyone has stayed warm and safe these past few days and are now enjoying some sunshine today. Gwinnett County has already cancelled school for Friday February 14 so we won't have class until Monday February 17.

Our Candy Bar fundraiser will now be due on Monday February 17 during all class periods. At that time, money will be collected for each box checked out and sizes for tshirts and sweatshirts will be taken.

Disney participants, please look for an email a little later with some updates.

Enjoy the rest of your "winter break" and get ready to sing on Monday!

Candy Bar Fundraiser Extended!

Due to the inclement weather, we will be extending our Candy Bar sale until Wednesday February 12.  All students who participated must turn in $52 per box by the end of that day. We will process Tshirt and Sweatshirt orders at that time.

Disney Participants will be receiving updated balance sheets tomorrow in anticipation of our final payment due Thursday February 13.  Please contact Mrs. Reed with any questions.

Thanks guys! Have a wonderful week!

Voce Bella Performance Video

On Wednesday December 4th Voce Bella, NHS' Advanced Women's Chorus, was selected to sing at the annual Leadership Holiday Brunch.  This brunch is for all the senior administration, head principals of schools and the superintendent.  We are the largest school district in the state, so this is quite the honor to be the only group selected for this year's brunch.  Our performance was professionally recorded and will be broadcast on the Public Schools channel in Gwinnett County now through January.  Happy Holidays!

The video features other performances around the county this season, so if you'd like to see selections from our performance, see the times below:

Holiday Breakfast Tomorrow!

Tomorrow morning we will be celebrating the end of the semester with a Holiday Breakfast in the chorus room starting at 6:45.  A few reminders to make tomorrow extra-special:

  • Attendance is not mandatory but if you invite a friend, you will receive extra credit.  Both you and your friend must attend by 7 AM to earn extra credit.

    • Your friend must have a completed yellow invitation to enter the chorus room

    • Chorus members must check in with the attendance secretary at the chorus room door

  • Breakfast items are needed!  Only doughnuts & OJ will be provided, so we are relying on your food donations to feed our party.  Recommended items: granola bars, fruit, mini muffins, and cookies.  PLEASE bring food!

  • Arrive early! Breakfast will be served at 6:45 so if you arrive at the attendance deadline, you will run the risk of not getting any breakfast goodies.  Special music will begin at 7 AM so you will want to get a good seat.

  • Celebrate! Wear a tacky Holiday sweater or a Santa Hat and get ready to celebrate the end of the year!

One Week to Go! Poinsettia Sale 2013

We only have one more week for our annual poinsettia sale!
This easy fundraiser is for ALL chorus students and benefits ALL chorus students.  By participating in this important fundraiser you are raising much needed funds for our sheet music, our professional accompanist, and our LGPE registration.  We need ALL students to help and sell their fair share, which is 5 poinsettias.  All you have to do is ask: teachers, friends, families, neighbors and co-workers all want to support your student.  Students whose parents take in the order form into their workplace or church always have success.

Fundraiser incentives:
1) Students that sell at least 10 Poinsettias get a FREE chorus t-shirt!
2) Students that sell more than 10 Poinsettias earn $ towards their chorus account
3) Chorus classes that have 100% "fair share" participation (each student sells 5 poinsettias) will NOT have to complete the Holiday Concert written evaluation!

ALL Poinsettia orders and money are due NO LATER than Wednesday November 20th.  Thanks for your generous support of NHS Chorus!

Email sent to NHS Faculty about our fundraiser:
It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year!  It’s time for the 4th Annual NHS Chorus Poinsettia Sale!  This year we are excited to introduce 3 exciting colors: RED, PINK & WHITE.  As always, our poinsettias are sold in 6.5” festive foil-trimmed pots, have at least 5 large healthy blooms, and are guaranteed to spread holiday cheer!  Our poinsettias are shipped overnight, fresh from a Miami nursery and should not be confused with the sad, leggy poinsettias you find at Home Depot on Black Friday.

Each beautiful poinsettia is only $10.  Some of your favorite chorus students will be going to Disney World this Spring and need your support so don’t be a Scrooge and get a poinsettia for yourself and for someone you love!  NHS Chorus will be selling these seasonal favorites for only a few days, so don’t miss this wonderful tradition!  Poinsettias will be delivered the week of December 2.

Poinsettia Fundraiser Begins TODAY!

Our 4th Annual Poinsettia Fundraiser kicks off today!  Spread Holiday spirit and support NHS Chorus with our fun, festive Poinsettias!  We have 3 fabulous NEW colors for this year: Red, White and Pink and as always, Poinsettias come fresh from the nursery in 6.5" gold-foil wrapped pots.  Each plant is bursting with at least 5 gorgeous blooms and are so easy to maintain throughout the Holiday season.

Attached are the information and order forms sent home today.  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Bravo & Cookie Dough!

Thank you for making last night’s concert a success!  Parents, thank you for stepping up behind the scenes to help our concert run smoothly—we could not have done it without you!  I am very proud of the performances from our students and we are now critiquing our performance in class.  Due to concert preparations, grades on tomorrow’s progress reports will not reflect the last few days of rehearsals and our performance.  Thanks for your understanding!

Here are a few reminders for the remainder of the week:

Cookie Dough Delivery Tomorrow

If you ordered cookie dough, you MUST pick up your order by 4:00 PM tomorrow.  The truck is scheduled to get here anytime between noon and 1:00 PM so we will need as many parent volunteers as possible to help unload, organize and distribute the boxes to students.  Please sign up on the website or email me if you are planning on coming to help out for an hour or two. https://nhschorus.shutterfly.com/signup

Students MUST pick up their order tomorrow afternoon by 4:00 PM and refrigerate or freeze their order within 4 hours of pick up.  Make arrangements NOW with the people who ordered from you to ensure that they are home when you deliver.   Any orders that are not claimed by 4:00 PM will have to be discarded because there is nowhere to store the orders and students will be financially responsible for reimbursing their orders.

Disney Trip Deposit

We WILL be going to Disney World in March!  The deadline was extended to tomorrow, Friday October 11th by our trip coordinator!  So this is the LAST opportunity to go on the trip—pay the non-refundable $50 deposit with cash or check by tomorrow to secure your spot.  It’s going to be a great group of students!  For more Disney info: https://nhschorus.shutterfly.com/disney2014

Concert DVDs & Chorus SpiritWear

Orders for concert DVDs and SpiritWear are due by next Friday, October 18th.  You may place orders online on mypaymentsplus.com or through the order form in your concert program.  Please make sure you indicate size and your student’s name on the order form.  Thanks for your support!

Cookie Dough Delivery on Friday!

Last week Students received purple delivery reminders.  Make contact with the people that ordered cookie dough and set up a convenient delivery time, ensuring that all cookie dough is safely refrigerated or frozen within 4 to 6 hours of the delivery at noon on Friday.

The delivery of cookie dough will be this Friday October 11, with the truck arriving anytime between 12 and 2 PM.  Students will have passes to come pick up their orders.  The cookie dough must be refrigerated or frozen within 4 to 6 hours from the time it is unloaded from the truck.

Parents are needed Friday afternoon to help distribute cookie dough so please sign up on the website if you are free anytime between noon and 4 PM.  Thanks!

Disney Trip Deposit Due!

Disney Trip Deposit Due Tomorrow

If you are planning on going on our Disney Trip, you must pay the $50 deposit by tomorrow at 11:59:59 PM on mypaymentsplus.com.  If we do not have at least 33 participants, we will not go on the trip and your deposit will be refunded.  If we do have at least 33 participants, your deposit will be un-refundable and we get to go to Disney!  The $50 non-refundable deposit secures your spot and you agree to pay the remaining payments in order to participate on the trip.

Of the 50 people who participated in our online survey, 38 people responded positively to the trip, including 17 people who indicated they were “ready to put down the deposit.”  Please review the trip information at www.nhschorus.shutterfly.com/disney2014 and let me know ASAP if you have any concerns that would turn your “maybe” into a “yes.”

Don’t forget—The deposit ($50) is due tomorrow and if you don’t turn in your money you will not go to Disney!

Helpful Reminders for the Day of the Audition:

·  Be patient!  Especially at the middle school level, we’ve had many parents in panic mode when their children did not reappear in 30 minutes.  Assure the parents that their children are safe.

·  Arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled audition time.  Students should not wear any clothing that associates them with a school. Please wear something nice: Dress shirts/blouses with dress pants or skirts.  No jeans or casual attire.

·  This year names will be pre-printed on the score sheets rather than the labels we’ve used in the past.  However, I believe they will put one label on the written test scantron sheet.  The students will bubble the answers on the test, and they do not need their own pencils.

·  Assigned audition times are for the solo/scales audition.  The solo/scales audition is allotted 3 minutes; the technical audition is allotted 7 minutes; the written test is allotted 20 minutes.  Students should allow 30-45 minutes for the entire audition, and remind them that it’s now possible to visit the technical panel before the solo/scales if that reduces wait times.

·  The audition is in three parts.  Students must complete each part of the audition in order to qualify for All-State.

·  Students may not have cell phones in the audition area, and teachers’ cell phones must be turned off.

·  Students must bring their own CDs.  Accompaniment CDs will not be provided for them at the audition site.  Also, please note that students may not use a copy of the music or a word sheet in the audition, but they may use an original score from the book if necessary.

Concert Reminders

We are rapidly approaching our first concert of the year.  Please read these important reminders carefully and as always, please email me with any questions!

Concert Reminders

Our first concert is Wednesday October 9th at 7 PM in the NHS Theatre.  Students are required to arrive dressed in their concert attire no later than 6 PM.

Please invite your friends, family and neighbors to this great FREE concert featuring the best singers at Norcross.  The Fall Concert’s music will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s immortal “I Have a Dream” speech.  It will be a concert to remember!  Theatre doors open at 6:40 so don’t be late!

Ensure NOW that your student’s uniform is hemmed to the appropriate length and you have the correct black dress shoes.  A portion of your student’s grade will be based upon their stage presence, including their concert uniform!

There will be NO dress rehearsal for the concert.  Therefore, the remaining class rehearsals are especially crucial to the success of the first concert.  The NHS Chorus Expectations (below) are strictly enforced to ensure effective rehearsals.  Thanks for your cooperation!

1) Be Prepared

2) Respect Yourself and Others

3) Try your best

Parents, there are several volunteer opportunities as we near the concert.  Please check out the website tomorrow morning to sign up.  Thanks in advance!

Accompanist Rehearsal Friday

We will have a special in-class rehearsal on Friday with our paid accompanist.  Because this is such an important rehearsal, Friday’s class rehearsal will be worth 25 points.  There will be no excused absences accepted so be there!

Disney Deposit Deadline Friday

The first, non-refundable deposit for the Disney Trip is due this Friday on mypaymentsplus.com.  We need at least 33 attendees including students, parents, and directors in order to participate in the trip.  Please visit the website for a trip update, including the answers to your questions at our Informational Meeting.  Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity!!!  www.nhschorus.shutterfly.com/disney2014

Program Ads Due Friday

If you would like to fundraise for the Disney Trip or just raise funds for NHS Chorus, then please pick up a Program Ad Info Sheet in the Chorus room.  Program Ads are due by Friday October 4th and you earn 50% profit of your sales!  It’s simple!  Ask local businesses to support you by buying space in our concert program.  Their business will be advertised in all 4 concert programs and has the potential to reach an audience of 2000 new clients.  Ask your favorite local business like real estate agents, orthodontists, lawn care service to support you and advertise at the same time. The info sheet will be posted on the website first thing tomorrow morning.  Thanks in advance for your support!

Cookie Dough Update

The delivery for Cookie Dough has been set for Friday October 11 at noon.  As soon as the cookie dough is delivered it must be refrigerated or frozen within 4 to 6 hours.  If you ordered a large amount of cookie dough then please arrange to pick up your cookie dough that afternoon, any time after 12:30 and until 4:00 PM.  Parents are needed—so sign up on the website!

Absolutely no cookie dough will be stored, unclaimed cookie dough will be thrown out and reimbursement for unclaimed cookie dough will be at the student’s expense.  Please contact your customers this week to arrange the most convenient time to deliver the cookie dough, thank them for their order and don’t forget to invite them to Wednesdays concert!

Thanks again for helping make our first concert a success!

Final Uniform Reminder

Dear Parents & Students,

As you are aware, the uniform payment deadline is tomorrow Friday September 20.  You may pay online at mypaymentsplus.com.  Once you are logged in, go to “school clubs” and scroll down to chorus.  There you find all the payment options.

The concert uniform is the only required expense for a chorus student.  The uniform is worn at all formal concerts and is a part of a student’s concert grade.  Failure to pay for a student’s concert uniform in full by tomorrow’s deadline will mean that your student will not receive a uniform until it is paid in full.  The concert is Wednesday October 9th and uniforms must be picked up no later than Friday October 4th in order for them to be hemmed to the appropriate length.  The shoes, socks and undergarments are the responsibility of the individual student.

NHS Chorus has notified all students and parents since August 7 of this mandatory expense.  To help with this expense, NHS Chorus has provided the Cookie Dough Fundraiser.  NHS Chorus has also set up payment plans on mypaymentsplus.com in order to pay for the uniform in $20 increments.

Unfortunately, some students opted not to take advantage of the alternate way to pay.  I do understand that money is tight, but NHS Chorus is self-funded thus the reason we have frequent fundraising opportunities.  Hopefully, this is just a reminder of the deadline for all uniform payments.

As always, thank you for your support and feel free to email me with any questions.

Fundraiser Update

Thank you for supporting NHS Chorus through the Cookie Dough/Magazine fundraiser!  I know money is tight for most of us so I hope that you will use the fundraiser as an opportunity to raise funds for upcoming costs—including the formal concert uniform.   But you can use the fundraiser to raise funds for ANYTHING chorus related—all you have to do is sell to your teachers, neighbors and co-workers.  There are many students that haven’t taken advantage of the fundraiser yet so don’t delay!  All money and orders are due next Wednesday – September 4.

All State Chorus Info Meeting Tomorrow!

If you are interested in trying out for All State Chorus this year please attend tomorrow's informational meeting.  We will go through the entire audition process and answer any questions you may have.  Registration for the first audition is Friday September 6 and may be paid online on mypaymentsplus.com

The meeting will start at 2:25 and go until 3:30.  Thanks!

All-State Chorus

After a district and then a statewide audition process, students are selected to participate in a three-day clinic in Savannah.  This is highly competitive and students are highly encouraged to take advantage of “All State Bootcamp”.  It is a tremendous experience to sing in an elite ensemble made up of the best young musicians in the state of Georgia.  It takes much dedication and practice to prepare for these auditions, but it is a great learning experience for students who participate.

Gwinnett Braves Fundraiser!

NHS Chorus is honored to have been invited to sing the National Anthem at the Gwinnett Braves game on April 22. This performance has been on the chorus calendar since the beginning of the semester.  (Please see the course syllabus for information about said requirements in more detail).  Now, with that being said, they have to purchase a ticket so I can’t require attendance for a grade, but if every person is not there, we will NOT be able to make a good showing for Norcross and our choral program.  Please contact me personally if you want your child to attend but are unable to purchase a ticket.

I know from experience that selling items can really become tedious and time consuming, so we are all so excited that we will be able to turn this great experience for the students into a fundraiser!   And here is how to do it:  simply get on your email, Facebook, Twitter or phone and invite your friends, family and neighbors to support the chorus by purchasing tickets to the game.

Each student is expected to sell at least three (3) tickets, including one for themselves, to support the chorus.  Help us sell over 200 tickets to help pay for our sheet music, our fabulous accompanist, and to continue building a tradition of singing excellence at Norcross High School.

Ticket Info

Tickets are only $12 each and a portion of each ticket directly supports the chorus.

Please purchase tickets on MyPaymentsPlus.com under the Chorus section.  There you can specify the quantity of tickets you wish to purchase and pay using a checking account, debit or a credit card.

All orders are due by Friday April 5.

Article: Everything I need to know, I learned in Music class

Check out this great article found on the "Schools of Thought" blog on CNN.com:

http://schoolsofthought.blogs.cnn.com/2013/03/20/my-view-everything-i-need-to-know-i-learned-in-music-class/?hpt=hp_c3

"Music is an art and a science, and it's one of the best ways kids can learn  creativity and those mythical critical thinking skills. The focus of the curriculum isn’t forcing everyone to learn about Bach or Mozart. It’s about learning how to think, rather than what to think."

Talent Show Help Needed!

Talent Show – Your HELP Needed!

Our first Talent Show is this Thursday March 21 at 7 PM in the NHS Theatre.  But before we enjoy the show, your help is needed!

1)  Talk to your friends and family about the show.  We have a great line-up of talent and they don’t want to miss it!!

2)  Sign up to sell tickets during lunches through Thursday

3)  Make posters during Guided Study in the chorus room

4)  We need individually wrapped baked goods to sell on Thursday—so buy a box of Oreos and stick 3 cookies in a plastic baggie for all the Oreos that you buy.  Homemade cupcakes and cookies are welcome too!  Just make sure all goodies are individually wrapped and are due by the end of the school day on Thursday.

LGPE Preparations

We have had a great final week rehearsing for our first performance and contest--Large Group Performance Evaluations!  There has been a lot of questions concerning the actual procedure once we arrive at the event.  Beginning Chorale will be the first chorus to perform on Tuesday morning and the rest of the choirs will follow on rotating basis: warm-up, performance, and sight-reading session.  We have been preparing specifically for the sight-reading session since the first day of school, so here are some helpful reminders for those students who are nervous about their first sight-reading test.

20130301_143308-1.jpg

One Week away from LGPE!

Our choirs are busy at work getting prepared for the Large Group Performance Evaluation on Tuesday March 5.  All choirs are attending to perform two songs and then sight-read a short musical example.  I am so proud of each and every member's contribution to the success of their group.  Only a few more days before LGPE so get lots of rest and drink lots of water.

All permission slips are due by Friday March 1.  Please have all your teachers including your parents sign the slip and return to Mrs. Reed by Friday.

We will be leaving on Tuesday morning at 7:20, so please be in the chorus room dressed in your formal concert uniforms by 7:00 AM and bring some money for lunch.  Additional details and the performance schedule are attached.  Looking forward to a great LGPE performance this year and SUPERIOR scores!

2)  Bring a friend grades 9 through 11.  8th grade siblings are great to bring!  All guests must fill out an info card before they leave to document their participation. (10 points)

3)  Bring a breakfast item to share. (5 points) Each class has been assigned:

1st: breakfast pastries like doughnuts, muffins, scones, etc.  Everything should be finger food.

2nd: paper plates, napkins, cups, cartons of juice or bottled water

6th: breakfast pastries like doughnuts, muffins, scones, etc.  Everything should be finger food.

Starting at 7:00, 2nd period will sing Oh Santa, 6th period will sing Dai Diddle Dai and Chamber Choir will sing Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  Please let me know ASAP if any students have questions or concerns.  This will be a great way to share our talents with others and even spread a little holiday cheer!

Toys for Tots

Grading Reminders

All above rehearsals marked mandatory will be recorded for a grade.  Please be on time and take care of your voice during this busy season!  The concert is the performance final for each class.  As per class discussion, there are only 2 excuses for being absent.  Please see attendance policy on website if you have any questions.  A written final will be given during exam week.  In addition, the Chorus Breakfast is a participation grade for each student.  A student must be present, bring a friend, and bring a food item in order to receive full credit.

More information is forthcoming when we find out the fate of our awesome football team.  IF we play in the state championship game, we are very likely to sing the National Anthem at the game in the Georgia Dome.

Please use this weekend to ask your friends, neighbors, and family members to help support NHS Chorus by ordering a poinsettia.  Our 6.5" poinsettias aren't the sad & droopy ones you'll find at Home Depot.  Big, healthy, luscious and containing at least 5 blooms, our poinsettias are guaranteed to liven up any space.  Each student is strongly encouraged to sell at least 5 poinsettias for their "fair share."

I have been checking the order totals every other day this week, and we still have a lot of selling to do!  Any class that sells 5 poinsettias per member will NOT have to complete the Holiday concert evaluation essay!  Sell 25 poinsettias and earn a Chorus T-shirt!  Sell 35 poinsettias and earn a Chorus Sweatshirt!

All poinsettia orders and money are due Wednesday, November 14 by the end of the day.  Checks should be made out to NHS Chorus.

Chorus account balances:
Balance reminders were sent home Thursday.  Please either make plans to pay for your balance as soon as possible or sell the recommended poinsettias indicated on your sheet.  Remember that you must sell an additional 5 poinsettias for your "fair share."

Other important days next week:
There will be a Chorus Council meeting on Wednesday from 2:25-4:00 PM
There will be a Men's Sectional Rehearsal for 6th Period & Chamber Choir men on Thursday from 2:25-4:00 PM

3rd Annual Chorus Poinsettia Fundraiser Starts Today!

Dear Parents,

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and we have been busy busy busy learning our Holiday music for our next concert!  We are so proud to announce that 3 students—Alexander Barron, Maia Brookes, and Libby Bishop all passed the first round of All State chorus auditions.  Bravo to these outstanding chorus members!!

Our 3rd Annual Poinsettia Fundraiser begins today!

Our healthy and lush poinsettias have at least 5 large blooms and come in a 6½” gold foil wrapped pot.  We are selling our deluxe poinsettias for $10 each.  Each individual student is expected to sell 5 poinsettias.  It is extremely important that each student meet their individual selling goal.  There will be individual and group prizes for the most poinsettias sold.  Please feel free to sell to teachers, neighbors, co-workers, or church members and spread a little holiday cheer while you’re at it!

We are in dire need of funds to continue building a tradition of excellence at Norcross.  Our county budget continues to be cut each year and does not match the fantastic growth of our program.  For example, we will again perform at the GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) next semester which costs $250 per choir.  For each concert, the Chorus must spend up to $950 for music and accompanist fees.  I hope you agree that our students deserve new sheet music and more performance opportunities.  We have lots of wonderful plans in the works but it takes support from each and every member.  We’ve had amazing success with our Poinsettia fundraiser for the last two years and I hope you will join our efforts this year to help raise funds.  Thank you in advance for your continued and generous support!

All money and orders are due Wednesday November 14 by the end of the day.

Let it Shine – Holiday Concert is Tuesday December 11

I hope you will join us for our free Holiday concert, “Let it Shine” on December 11, 2012 at 7 PM in the NHS Theatre.  In addition to traditional and contemporary holiday music, the advanced choruses will be collaborating with the NHS Chamber Orchestra to present selections from J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.  It will be a festive evening and a great event to invite your neighbors and friends.  There will be a mandatory dress rehearsal on Monday December 10 from 2:25-5:00.  Please make transportation plans now for your student.  Also, ensure that your student’s chorus uniform is properly hemmed.  I noticed several un-hemmed dresses at the Fall Concert—please hem dresses to the floor with student’s black closed-toe dress shoes taken in account.

You may pre-order your concert DVD for the Fall or Holiday concerts, DVDs are $10 each.  Fall concert DVDs will be delivered by the Thanksgiving break.  Chorus spirit wear (t-shirts and hoodies) are on track for arriving before the break as well.

Please feel free to shoot me an email if you ever have any questions or concerns.  Looking forward to seeing you at our Holiday concert and happy selling!  Thanks a bunch!

BRAVO for these outstanding chorus students!

Please help me congratulate Alexander Barron, Maia Brookes, and Libby Bishop for passing the first round auditions for All State Chorus -- one of the biggest honors a chorus student can earn.  These students successfully passed a grueling first audition consisting of sightreading, performing a song in Italian, a theory test, and singing scales.  Alexander, Maia, and Libby will have one final audition before the event in February.

Congratulations to all that auditioned--you make me so proud of your hard work and talent!

Letter from the Georgia Music Educators Association President

Dear GMEA members,

It is just fifteen days until the November 6 election and the pace in the news medial and on billboard advertising is really picking up on Amendment One.  A good bit of the newspaper coverage is op eds that take the side of not voting for passage and, as far as I know, all the bill board advertising is pro passage, which is to be expected since that side has most of the money.   The television coverage is mostly local news and it is, of course, neutral.   The Atlanta Journal Constitution took an independent poll a couple of weeks ago that showed the respondents to the poll almost evenly divided on the issue.   The worrisome thing was that 17% of those polled said they had never heard of the amendment or weren't familiar with it.  Based on the wording of the amendment I would think a lot of people who weren't familiar with the real issues would be prone to vote in favor.  We must do everything we can to educate those in our communities about the possible consequences of passage of this legislation so that they will not cast an uninformed vote.

Herb Garrett, Executive Director of the Georgia School Superintendents Association has said that he thinks this amendment will pass or fail based on the rural counties. Based on the AJC polling numbers that would seem accurate.  A lot of local school boards and superintendents have spoken up against passage and that should be helpful. If you are in one of the rural or small town areas you can be very helpful. If you have occasion to talk to people about the amendment here are some things you might use.

I am attaching a Power Point presentation to this email that goes into a lot of detail about the nature and shortcomings of this amendment.  It is designed to educate teachers.  You may feel free to share it with any one you choose. For those of us who are concerned about it, this battle is very important, not only in terms of the charter school question, but also in terms of the public schools in Georgia.  As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Kindest regards,

Cecil Wilder

Honors Chorus THIS Weekend!

The fun doesn't stop this week for NHS Chorus!
All Honors Chorus participants must read the following info and turn in their permission slips by Friday morning.  Please make sure you bring money for meals--all the info is included in this sheet.

Honors Chorus 2012

Friday & Saturday October 19 & 20

Congratulations on being selected for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 Honors Chorus! Here is the information you need to have a fun and successful Honors Chorus.

Study your music!

Pick up your music & provide Mrs. Reed a blank CD or buy one for $1 so you can get the practice recording.  The recording plays your part so you can learn your music as fast as possible.  Treat your Honors Chorus music as a special homework assignment this week.  Your directors at this event are counting on you to learn your music beforehand so you can dig into the actual music-making faster.  Utilize your CD and practice during guided study, in the car, and at home.

Turn in your forms

The field trip permission form & alternate transportation form (on the back) must be signed by all of your teachers AND your parents.  This trip is an excused absence, so please complete missed assignments in a timely manner.  The form is due before loading the bus Friday morning.

Trip Reminders

On both mornings, we will be leaving 7:30 AM SHARP.  This is your warning: if you are late we will leave you!  If you go on the trip Friday, you are obligated to go on Saturday.  If you do not show up Saturday morning, Friday's absence will be counted as AWOL and you will be serve the appropriate consequence for an AWOL absence.

Bring an enthusiastic attitude—great music only happens with hard work!

Bring your music & folder both days—make sure your name, school, and choir are written on each piece of music.

Please bring your complete uniform with you on Saturday morning.  You will need your uniform for Saturday’s concert.

You are responsible for your own transportation following the concert—please indicate with whom you are riding home on the Alternate Transportation form.  Students are only allowed to ride home with another parent or guardian.

Parents, please join us on Saturday for the culminating concert in Athens.  The Classic Center is a one-hour drive from Norcross and it is always a fantastic concert.  Here is the address: 300 North Thomas Street, Athens, Georgia 30601.

Friday Deadlines!

Three VERY IMPORTANT deadlines tomorrow

1)  Concert Evaluations DUE: Please complete the outline given in class & write out your evaluation on a separate piece of paper.  Both the paper and outline are due for a grade.

2)  Student Account Balance sheets DUE: The white slip of paper that was attached to the gold account balance sheets must be signed by a parent.  This verifies that parents are aware of each student’s account balance.  In total, $2965 is owed by chorus members.  Please plan on paying your account balance as soon as you are able so that it does not affect student performance or participation.  As always, if you have any questions about your student’s account balance, please do not hesitate to email me!  The white slip of paper is due tomorrow for a grade.

3)  Optional: DVD and Chorus Spirit Wear orders DUE.  If you wish to order the concert DVD ($10), Chorus T-shirt ($15) or Chorus Sweatshirt ($30), your order form and money are due tomorrow.  You may order on mypaymentsplus.com or send in a check made out to NHS Chorus.  Please support NHS Chorus by purchasing spirit wear – it really helps advertise the great things that students are accomplishing every day!

All State Auditions!

This Saturday, October 13 at North Gwinnett Middle School.  Your audition time is listed on your gold Account Balance Sheet.  Please plan on arriving at least 30 minutes early and wear nice clothes—dress pants & a dress shirt are appropriate.  Full mock-auditions are being held today and tomorrow after school until 4:00 PM.  Please stay and get an actual projected score—it helps to go through the audition a couple of times so that you are prepared to do your best!  Break a leg, students!!

Honors Chorus is NEXT WEEKEND!

Permission slips and info sheets are coming home today.  Please have all teachers and parents sign the permission slip and turn in to Mrs. Reed NO LATER THAN Thursday, October 18.

Cookie Dough

Thank you so much for such a smooth fundraiser!  All items were picked up by 3:45 and I hope you all are enjoying the delicious cookie dough! :)

I want to especially thank Bethany Mumbower, Serena Lau, Kalliah Johnson, Reyna Martinez, Tanayah Breeden, and Libby Bishop for your dedication & organizational skills!  Thank you all again for your support of Norcross Chorus!!

Concert Performance Evaluations

All Chorus members are required to complete a written concert evaluation following each formal concert.  An evaluation allows members the opportunity to evaluate the quality of the performance, both the positive and negative aspects, and gain valuable information about their progress.  The Fall Concert evaluation is due on Friday October 12 during class.  Students must complete the attached outline in addition to a completed written evaluation.

COOKIES!

Tomorrow is the day for Cookies!

Please pick up your order during 7th period or after school.  Orders MUST be picked up BEFORE 5:00 to ensure the cookies stay frozen.  Mrs. Reed is required to throw away any unclaimed orders at that time because it violates the health code. :) So let's stay legal and pick up our cookies before 5:00 PM.

Thanks for your support of Norcross Chorus!

Don't forget!

Don’t forget that there are several things that are DUE tomorrow:

1)  Pick up your chorus uniform if you haven’t done so yet.  All students must make a payment first ($20) before they are allowed to take home a uniform.  Please take it home this weekend—you must have your uniform hemmed!

2)  Get your transportation arranged for Monday's dress rehearsal.  All students are required to be in attendance from 2:25-5:00.

3)  Select students: All State ($19) and Honors Chorus ($52) are due tomorrow!

Parents: Please volunteer to help out on Tuesday night--stage decorations, program passer-outers, and DVD order takers are all needed!

As always, please email me at colette_reed@gwinnett.k12.ga.us if you have any questions!

Fall Chorus Concert less than 2 weeks away!

Only two weeks until our first concert of the year, Harvest Home Fall Chorus Concert.  Parents, I hope you will join us on Tuesday October 2nd at 7 PM in the Norcross HS theatre to hear our students perform their latest works.  Our mandatory dress rehearsal is Monday October 1st—all chorus members must attend.  It will be held from 2:25 until 5:00 PM.

Please ensure that your student is properly attired for the concert.  In addition to their concert uniform, women must wear black closed-toe dress shoes (ballet flats work great!), black undergarments, and wear their hair out of their faces.  Men must wear black socks with black dress shoes.

Students uniforms are here and available to pick up tomorrow, Thursday September 20.  Only students who have made a payment may take home their uniform.  Account balance notices will also be sent home--please let me know if you have any questions!

School concerts are one of the few remaining formal social gatherings left in our society.  Take a minute to read about proper concert etiquette (it's the PDF attachment). We have been working non-stop to put on a wonderful concert for our audience so feel free to dress nicely and bring your friends and neighbors!

Several parent volunteers are needed to help our show run smoothly.  Please visit our website at nhschorus.shutterfly.com/volunteer to sign up for a job.  Thanks for your support of Norcross Chorus!

Don't Forget to Sign-up for Chorus!

Dear Students & Parents,

Summer is just around the corner and here at NHS we're finalizing next year's schedules. Based on our registration rosters, many students have not re-registered for chorus next year. I just wanted to give you a head's up and the opportunity to double check your schedule.  Don't miss another great year of chorus at Norcross HS!

How to register

1) Make room in your schedule.

a. You can delay to take PE or Health your senior year OR

b. You can take PE or Health online/over the summer for a fee

i. The first chorus fundraiser is individual based—all monies raised go directly towards a PE/health registration, uniforms, or trips. Money shouldn’t be a hindrance from taking chorus!

c. Consult the attached course schedule that helps guide you what classes are needed to graduate. Questions? Just email me!

2) Email Maria Chininis:

maria_chininis@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

a. Tell her you’d like to be signed up for Beginning Chorus for 2012-2013

b. Tell her what class you’d like to drop to make room for chorus (usually health or PE)

All elective schedules must be finalized by this Friday

, so please don't wait and make a decision about your first year at Norcross. I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and again, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.

Thanks!

Thanks!!

Thank you for a fantastic concert last night!  Students, you continue to inspire me with your hard work, talent, and dedication.  I am so proud of each and every one of you!  Parents, I cannot thank you enough for your support.  Many parents worked behind the scenes to help the show come off without a hitch and I would like to especially thank Diane Fisher, DeAnn Crawford, Catherine Reidy, May & Larry Thompson, Jan Brookes, Gwenda Booth, and many many others.  You are wonderful and so appreciated!

If you took any pictures from last night’s concert or reception, please share them on the website—we’d love to build a great 2011-2012 photo album.  Please contact me if you need help adding pictures.

As we approach the end of the year, we have several housekeeping concerns to wrap up.  First, all rented uniforms must be returned, cleaned, and on a hanger by Wednesday, May 9.  Unreturned uniforms will result in an obligation and the price of the uniform must be paid in full.  Any sheet music issued to students must also be returned to Wednesday May 9.  Please help by turning in these items as soon as possible!

Don't forget that you can "Like" NHS Chorus on Facebook!!  All parents, students, alumni, and community members are welcome to join our fan page.  It's just another great way to connect with Chorus @ Norcross!!  www.facebook.com/nhschorus

March Star Students

Congratulations to Alexander Barron and Mia Donatien for being selected as the NHS Chorus March start students!

Alexander is by far the most energetic and ready to sing each and every day-which is saying something because we meet at 7:20 AM.  His passion and energy for singing show in the success he has in leading the bass section and his facial expressions while singing.  Keep up the great work!

Mia is one of the most dependable singers in Beginning Chorus.  She quietly leads by example by always following directions, making immediate changes and adjustments to her singing, and helping others in her section.  Mia has earned the March student of the month because she demonstrates excellence day in and day out.  Way to go!

Check out this month's star student's pictures under the pictures and video tab.

Thanks for a great LGPE!

Dear Students & Parents,

Thank you so much for your hard work for making this year's LGPE very successful!  I am so proud of how our choruses sounded and behaved.  We will be going over the actual scores during class tomorrow, so stay tuned for results!  I want to especially thank Saroja Goda, Cindy Smith, Norma Zolorzano, and Kevin Maynard for being awesome parent chaperones.  Thanks a bunch and see you all tomorrow!

Mrs Reed

p.s. If you took any pictures @ LGPE, go ahead and add them to the site!
p.p.s. Chamber Choir - we will have a quick results talk (& snack time!) on Wednesday right after school - meet in the chorus room at 2:25 - meeting/rehearsal will end before 3:00.  Thanks!

March LGPE Madness!

March LGPE Madness!!

1st Period

Wear NHS Chorus/NHS Spirit Wear for tomorrow’s reception for Mr. Patterson.  We will learn/perfect “Norcross, Norcross” in class and then rehearse “Anyway” one final time with Ms. Hawkins our accompanist.  Report immediately to the chorus room at 2:10 and we will walk together to the Duke House.

Chamber Choir

2nd Period

Rehearse and memorize “Follow the Drinking Gourd”.  This is our final rehearsal with our accompanist so every single second of rehearsal is precious.  Although Wednesday’s mandatory rehearsal was cancelled, there will be an EXTRA CREDIT rehearsal for 2nd period only from 2:25-3:15.  We need to make one final push before LGPE—you know that any extra time

All Choruses

·   For LGPE on Monday: Bring full concert uniform, $5 lunch, rain jacket

·   We still need 2 more parent chaperones for Monday—Thanks to those who have already signed up.  Don’t miss this opportunity to see your student sing and help support NHS Chorus!

February Star Students

Congratulations to Kasandra Acosta and Jamie Jaramillo for being selected as the NHS Chorus students of the month!  Kasandra is such a positive influence in the Norcross Singers--she shows up early, ready to sing each morning and helps motivate those around her with her attitude.  Jamie is, by far, the most improved chorus member in Beginning chorus.  He doesn't let outside distractions interfere with his progress-he applies that focus and works hard with great results.  Keep up the awesome work, guys!

Will YOU be selected for next month's star student?  We're looking for hard workers & those who go above and beyond.

LGPE Final Update

LGPE Final Update!

What is LGPE?  LGPE-Large Group Performance Evaluation-is our annual standardized test held in March.  It is a full day field trip.  On March 5, students will report to the chorus room first thing and have a few minutes to get changed into their uniforms.  We will travel to Lawrenceville by school bus to sing two songs that we’ve been working on in addition to a sight-reading test.  We will also be able to watch other choirs from our area perform.  On our way back to the school, we will enjoy a quick lunch.  We will return before the 2:10 bus dismissal.  LGPE is only 6 rehearsal days away so here are the final details for the next two weeks!

Mandatory Rehearsal

Our Mandatory Rehearsal scheduled for February 29 has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict.  Please ensure your student is present every day next week (Feb 27-March 2) for class rehearsal.  The accompanist will be stopping by a few times and our time with her is crucial!

February & March Happenings!

LGPE

We are rapidly approaching our annual performance review, Georgia Music Educator’s Association (GMEA) Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE).  LGPE is our opportunity to be graded on two pieces that we’ve been working on in addition to our sight-reading skills.  Students have been rehearsing daily for this event – feel free to ask what they’re working on!  Our date for evaluation is Monday March 5.  It is a school field trip and we will be gone the entire school day.  We do need at least 2 parent chaperones to help that day, so please check your calendars and let me know if you available to help!  Additional information about LGPE will be sent home next Monday.

Mandatory Rehearsal

In preparation for LGPE will be holding one mandatory rehearsal on Wednesday February 29 from 2:25-5:00.  Each class will sing on the stage with our accompanist while the other classes will fill out peer-evaluations.  Students do not need to wear their concert uniforms for this rehearsal.  Our accompanist will also be visiting our classes that Monday and Tuesday of that week—please ensure your student is present and healthy for those crucial rehearsals!

Cluster Concert

Following our LGPE concert, we will be preparing a concert for the community, the first-annual Norcross Chorus Cluster Concert.  Peachtree Elementary will join us in presenting our LGPE selections and a few extra songs.  Students will collaborate with Peachtree Elementary on Friday March 9 during school and during rehearsal on March 15.  This concert is free and open to the public!

Chorus T-shirts & Hoodies

The Norcross chorus will be selling t-shirts to commemorate our first-ever cluster concert for only $10.  All proceeds from t-shirt sales benefit the chorus program—so order your t-shirt today!

Chorus hoodies featuring our NHS Blue Devil are also on sale.  All hoodies are $30.  Order BOTH the t-shirt and hoodie for $35—what a deal!!!

All t-shirt and hoodie orders and $ are due no later than Wednesday February 29.  Cash or checks made out to NHS Chorus are welcome.  Order forms are available in the chorus office and website.  Thanks for your support!

Extra Singing Opportunities Next Semester!

Parents & Students,

I am happy to announce that next semester we will be offering two additional singing events for selected students!  All registration forms and dues are due by Wednesday December 14 before finals. Please email me @ colette_reed@gwinnett.k12.ga.us with any additional questions!

For All Men:

Real Men Sing event @ GSU on Thursday January 12.  Join other top select metro-Atlanta High School tenors and basses in this one-day honor chorus at Georgia State University.  For this field-trip, you'll sing in a large men's chorus, recieve male-specific vocal technique instruction, and get to work with top GSU conductors.  The $30 registration fee includes music, lunch and a t-shirt.  We will coordinate a car-pool to drive down to downtown Atlanta together.

For Advanced Chorus & Chamber Choir women only:

Diva Day 2012 @ Chattahoochee High School on Saturday February 4.  Want to learn more about female a cappella singing?  This fun yet intense one-day camp introduces female singers to women's barbershop singing--a style of singing featuring at least 4 part tight harmonies and humorous performances.  There is also a "Song of Atlanta Sing-Off Competition" in which you can audition to singing for the concert--more info included in the packet.  I highly recommend this workshop to improve your singing and listening skills as well as have a blast learning new music!  The $20 registration fee includes lunch and dinner, music, learning CDs and costumes! We can arrange to carpool to this event and we might need additonal chaperones.

Holiday Update

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic selling – we just wrapped up our best Poinsettia fundraiser yet!  We sold 384 poinsettias, 84 over our goal and almost 200 more than last year!!  We will need lots of help Tuesday afternoon starting at noon to help unload poinsettias from the truck, organize the orders and help distribute poinsettias at the end of the day.  If you can help, please sign up on our new website for a specific time slot.  If your student sold more poinsettias than they can carry, please plan on making arrangements to pick your poinsettia order up that afternoon.  We will be distributing poinsettias from 2 PM until 3:30 PM.

Exciting NHS Chorus news – our new and improved website: http://nhschorus.shutterfly.com is up and running!  Please take a moment to check it out – there is a calendar with our events, forms, sign-up sheets, pictures, videos and more!  It is my hope that it will be a portal and treasure trove of chorus info as well as a place to share pictures, videos and memories of our great chorus program.  If you have any suggestions or comments about the site, feel free to email me, Colette_reed@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

Our Mandatory Dress Rehearsal is TOMORROW (December 1) after school from 2:25-4:30.  All student s in the chorus program are required to be in attendance for it is a part of their Performance Final grade.  We will be rehearsing in the NHS theatre and working out concert logistics.  These next few days are crucial rehearsal days during class time, so please ensure your student is well rested and hydrated.    Now is the time to ensure your student’s formal concert uniform is ready for next week’s concert – please clean!

1st Period Advanced Chorus and Chamber Choir students – This is just a reminder of your upcoming performances: Monday’s Faculty meeting (2:15-2:45) you are singing “Glory to God” from Messiah.  There is a Chamber Choir rehearsal following the faculty meeting performance until 4:00.  On Tuesday you are singing in the Orchestra Holiday concert.  Call time is 7:00 PM.  Then you are singing in the chorus concert on Wednesday, details are below.  We are caroling at the Forum next Friday, December 9 at 5:00.  If you haven’t signed up with Mrs Reed yet, you need to do so ASAP.

All Students--Our Holiday Concert, Songs for Snow and Mistletoe will be held next Wednesday evening at 7 PM in the NHS Theatre.  This concert is the Performance Final for chorus students.  Attendance is mandatory.  Students must arrive fully dressed by 6:30.  Parents, this is a wonderful program to invite friends and neighbors.  I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Holiday Parent Letter

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and we have been busy busy busy learning our Holiday music for our next concert!  I cannot thank you all so much for your patience and understanding this Fall due to my maternity leave.  I am happy to report that both me and my daughter Camille are growing and thriving.  We all have so much to be thankful for!

I am writing this letter to update you on our upcoming events.  First some bad news.  Our county budget was cut by 40% for 2011-2012 and we have not been able to fundraise at all this Fall due to my absence.  We are in dire need of funds to continue building a tradition of excellence at Norcross.  For each concert, your student sings 3 to 4 pieces of music at $2 apiece.  There are 85 students in our program and 4 choruses, so in one concert our music costs are at least $510.  Also, our accompanist charges at least $250 for rehearsals for each concert.  I try my best to use existing music in our library or public domain music to help costs, but our students deserve new sheet music and more performance opportunities.  We had amazing success with our Poinsettia fundraiser last year and I hope you will join our efforts this year to help raise funds.

I hope you will join us for our free Holiday concert, “Songs for Snow and Mistletoe” on December 7, 2011 at 7 PM in the NHS Theatre.  In addition to traditional and contemporary holiday music, the advanced choruses will be collaborating with the NHS Chamber Orchestra to present selections from Handel’s Messiah.  It will be a festive evening and a great event to invite your neighbors and friends.  There will be a mandatory dress rehearsal on Thursday December 1st from 2:25-4:30.

Fall concert DVDs will be delivered sometime next week.

Please feel free to shoot me an email if you ever have any questions or concerns.  Looking forward to seeing you at our Holiday concert and happy selling!  Thanks a bunch!
