Well we are home now and glad to be. Traveling yesterday was interesting but nothing too scary. We had to go through 100% security when we were in Amsterdam which was fine. Luckily for that flight we had exit rows so we were fairly comfy for the long trip. We got into Philly and had to go through customs which wasn't bad since they separated the lines for US citizens and non US citizens. We were actually the only ones in line since we hustled out of the plane. The flight to MN seemed a little long but I think that was because we wanted to be home so badly. We got into MN at 8:00pm which was 3am to us. My parents picked us up and welcomed us with some Christmas cookies! It was so nice considering we didn't get to experience the "normal" traditions this year. So today we are recouping, unpacking, doing laundry and appreciating alot of things that we took for granted... like internet! :)
 

We're in the US... almost home. :)

Well today was another travel day. We got up around 6am and were leaving Rome by 10:50. We got back into Amsterdam around 3. The flight was nice and quick. We had met a guy from Texas and actually ended up sitting next to him on the plane. He sure was a chatty guy but super nice. It was his 30th bday today which was kinda fun that he was traveling. The sad thing is that he was supposed to be with his family but they got stuck in the US with all the flight cancellations around Christmas. Anyway we got to the airport and picked up our baggage... all but one. Yep, they lost one of our bags. It was most of my clothing which sucks but I guess there are worse things. I'm not very hopeful that's I'll get my baggage back either. They just don't seem as organized here as they are in the states. Anyway we got a nice big coffee and headed to our hotel. Our hotel is very nice and the guy working there is very sweet. We then went out for some food and shopping. It crossed our minds to go to a 'coffee' shop but we decided against it. Some of you know what a coffee shope is in Amsterdam.... lol. But no we didn't go, instead we shopped around a bit and now are enjoying a movie and relaxation before we have another hectic travel day tomorrow. Can't believe we go home tomorrow!

We slept in until 9:30 this morning. But we had just enough time to grab breakfast. After breakfast we walked to the Christmas Market which was busy busy busy. It was pretty fun and interesting at the same time. I'll have to look it up but for some reason there were these witches on brooms for sale everywhere. Each tent had various things for sale. Tents had Candy, Nativity pieces, toys, as well as artisan & craft booths. We spent quite a while there and then walked towards another market where we ran across many many knockoff vendors. They were pushy, annoying and ridiculous! I quickly learned to pretend they didn't exist. 
OH I didn't mention the temperature today... it had to be in the 50s. Greg and I both walked around in short sleeves, it was wonderful!!!

Today was probably one of the longest days we've had on this trip so far. The morning started around 7am and we fully enjoyed our hotel's breakfast. The breakfast consisted of breads, some meats, cereal, yogurt, etc but the best part was the made to order coffee (or espresso or coffee or whatever you really wanted!) After a nice filling breakfast we went on a Rome Bus tour. For the small amount of time that we are here the bus tour was the best thing possible. It was amazing! I can't believe how much history was right under my feet. So if the pictures are a little off kilter it's because I was on the top level of a bus trying to snap as many pictures as possible.
After the tour we headed to the Vatican to sit STAND in line for the 'midnight' mass. In August, Greg had contacted the North American College in Rome and had tickets reserved. We had picked them up on the 23rd. Having these tickets didn't guarantee us a spot at the mass...hence we got in line a little after 2pm (after all most things were closing down at 2pm anyway so what else is there to do but get in line. Anywho we got in line and as people started to talk to one another we realized that most everyone was American. Remind you of anything... maybe standing in line the day after Thanksgiving?? Yea multiply that by 1000 and maybe you have an idea as to the amount of people that were there. There were probably a dozen or so people in front of us. So yes we were the crazy people that stood in line for 6 hours. They let us into the church at 8:30. Back to 2-8pm....We first met a family from Florida (or a set of parents with their adult daughter). It turns out the rest of the family was all at their house for Christmas. THe daughter with them was their youngest daughter who works in DC for Newt Gingrich. Our conversations quickly went to politics. Funny thing is everyone seemed to be on the same page. And people's opinions all seemed to go the same way. Time was flying but we all wanted coffee. So the converation went to coffee and how we all missed Dunkin Donuts or Caribou. So Alicia went to go and find coffee which is almost impossible to find a place that does "take away" coffee. All of a sudden her she came with 5 coffees which are actually espressos. It was the sweetest thing. The family just said Merry Christmas and gave us the coffee. It was just so nice to have a taste of home - the US.

We had met a family from San Diego the day we got there and actually saw them in line as well.

There was also a couple of exchange students. The guys were for nice and quite funny as well. The one guy didn't look like but did sound like the guy from Juno. My opinion was confirmed when the girl (Alicia) from DC said to me..."Doesn't the guy sound like the boyfriend from Juno?" We both started laughing because I had been thinking the same thing from the moment he opened his mouth.

Back to the waiting in line. It's hard to explain how the line is formed for this mass but it's definitaly not baracaded off or anything like that. So needless to say you have people the feel they can just butt in line. This is where the Mob mentality of protecting spots came in to play. It was very humorus. Earlier in the day there weren't many guards so we were on our own. People standing in line would start booing or yelling CIAO to the butters. It was pretty funny. And the majority of people trying to butt in were from Rome/Italy. As the evening started to get closer to 8:00 the rain stopped and the guards showed up. People were starting to crowd the entrance. I'm so thankful for the spot that we were in. We were in the only part of the line that actually had a fence on two sides so we really didn't have anyone butt in front of us. Greg - the gatekeeper - made sure no one tried to sneak in. It became quite a running joke and made everyone laugh but they were also thankful for his presence. For some reason many people had come up to Greg and the Juno guy asking them questions about the line, tickets, etc. It was entertaining.

So one of the women told us that you want to get an aisle seat to be able to really see the Pope walk to and from the altar. Needless to say everyone towards the front realized they had this chance. When the gates were to be opened you were told to walk and then you had to go through a security line. It was like the airport where you had to have your purse/bag go through an xray machine and you walk through a metal detector. You also had to have your ticket on you and showing at all times. With that you had to make sure no one grabbed your ticket. The time came and we had our game plan. The gates opened and we rushed to the security check point. I got through security and told Greg to grab my stuff as I would rush to get our seats. See if you've known me long enough you know that I have a great amount of experience of rushing for general seating for outdoor concerts. Just ask Dixie or Mary. :-) We always had a plan as well and always got amazing seats if I may say so! Well I got into the church and yes I got us aisle seats. It was quite a site to actually be in the St. Peter's Bascillia. Greg shortly came after me. He had quite a few things to say. Number one he basically protected this older man from being run over by the mob of people. It's actually pretty sad the way people acted. The butting in line, the pushing, it just didn't make sense considering this was for a Church Mass! Anyway Greg said the most pushy people were, wait for it, the nuns! No seriously they were very pushy. It's kind of funny but at the same time aren't they supposed to be the ladies of the church? O'well it was just fine. The two exchange students were about 7 rows ahead of us and the family from South Carolina ended up in front of us. It was pretty sweet if I may say.

The service was starting with all the nuns, bishops, priest, etc walking in. Then the camera's starting flashing as the pope started to walk in. Within a few seconds there were screaming and that's when the red jacket lady had jumped the barrier. I didn't see it myself because we were closer to the front of the church but I do have to say it was pretty scary not knowing what had happened. This was espeically scary when the Vatian Agents (dressed in suits and had ear pieces in) came running up the aisle to asses the situation. Within 30 seconds the Pope was up and the mass contined it's beginning. He didn't seem too shaken up, in my opinion, but I'm sure he was. Even though I am not Catholic it was quite a site to have the pope only a few feet away from me when he walked by. Once again the nuns were pushing towards the aisle to get a closer site of the man. The mass was nice and the whole thing was in varing languages but mostly in Italian. Surprisingly the 2 1/2 hour service flew by. The only thing that saddened me was the lack of Christmas music but that was to be expected. The service then ended and suddendly the two exchange students were by our side telling us what had happened. It wasn't because they saw what happened they just had a phone that could go online. So we knew quickly about the mentally ill women that tried to touch/attack/or whatever to the Pope. We left the chruch and walked back to the hotel. Of course there were many people out and about. We took our time since it was a pretty nice night.


More to update about when I can remember...

Between the rain and snow we didn't do too much these passed few days. We've been trying to keep an eye on the weather. I guess snow is a BIG deal here and they don't have the equipment to deal with it.
 Some highlights of the past two days.... We went to this restaurant called Ristoranta Lo Scugnizzo. We were a little early for lunch but they let us sit in the dinning room anyway, unlike the previous restaurant that we were at that made us move. Anyway the owner and the waiter were amazing! The waiter didn't speak much English but he was the sweetest guy and just adorable. I wanted to pack him in my suitcase and take him home! To me he was the type of older italian man that I always imagined that I would meet in Italy. He was so welcoming and willing to try and communicate. We both ordered pizza because we thought since the price was so cheap that the pizzas were personal size...we were SO wrong. Our pizzas came out and each were roughly 12inches! OyeVE that was a lot of pizza. Greg got a pizza called Lucky that had tomatoe, cheese, spicy sausage and french fries on it. My pizza was called Capcossli? ... anyway it had cheese, tomato and artichokes on it. YUM!! Our waiter came by and saw that we were done and as I was about to try and tell him that we needed a box to go he knew and basically said something like sit back, relax and enjoy the view, I"ll take care of you. As we finished up our wine (a liter....oops!) the owner came by and started chatting with us. He did know English. We were complimenting him on the food and everything about the place. We also said we were surprised at how large the pizzas were. He chuckeld and said that we had a pizza place in Brooklyn for 32 years and now resides in Rapallo. It was such a great experience. Greg and I both agreed that this was the experience that we had been waiting for.

I had to get a battery for my watch so the shuttlebus driver told us where to go. It was this small specialized place, of course. So we walked in and the walls were jammed with watches and jewelry. The man spoke decent English so he took my watch and started working on it. Greg and I were looking around and ended up spending a good amount of time there talking to the guy as well as looking at some really nice and unique jewelry. They had everything from antique to new, gold to silver, and traditional to modern. Greg bought me a ring there. It's beautiful!!! I'ts an antique channel set ring and I just love it!! While we were there a young man walked in with a gold bracelet. The lady helping him got out gold earrings. He ended up getting two pairs of earrings and traded in the gold bracelet. It's something I don't think you would see much in the states. Anyway I was just going to put the ring on but the man took the ring, put it in a box, wrapped it, and put a ribbon on it. Who does that!? It was so sweet.

Once again...Internet is hard to come by. We have it in our hotel but it is a slow connection. So I don't think I"ll be able to upload pic's but I"ll try!

We slept in again today which was just fine. The beginning of our trip was go go go and it's nice to take a little break before it's go go go again. We actually depend on the shuttle which only runs at certain times of the day. See we are way up on the hillside and walking into town in not really an option. NO worries though. So today we had a late breakfast and took the noon shuttle into town. Once we got into town we walked around the 'boardwalk' for quite a while. It was gorgeous out today. Greg and I didn't wear jackets and got many looks. I think it was in the 40s and the sun was shining bright. I actually got a little hot at some points during our walk. It started to cloud up after a while and decided to walk back into town.  We found a hotel that had WIFI which is a hard find. The town basically closes down at about 1:00 so it was perfect timing for us to sit down and get some things done on the internet. I obviously haven't gotten pictures up for a couple of days but don't worry they are coming. Once the town "opened" back up we went shopping again. We had our first official gelatto today too. It's SO GOOD!     I, of course, had chocolate and Greg had hazelnut. After the gelatto we were back to shopping. Sounds like we have done alot of that but most of it has been window shopping. It's just so neat how each store is so specialized. We went to the supermarket to pick up a little something to snack on before going back to the train station to try and figure out the rest of our time here and if we are going to travel any other parts of Italy before leaving for Rome as well as wait for our shuttle. We had gnocchi for dinner tonight which again we made here at our place. Of course we had trimisu and wine along with dinner. MMM, I just love Italian food!!! After dinner we watched a movie but I fell asleep. Let's hope I can get some rest tonight!

So the train was taking us from Paris to Nice but actually we ended up staying on the train to Ventimiglia which was in Italy. The evening went by slowly for me and I passed much of the time playing sudoku. No wifi, no lights, no chatting. It didn't make for the best trip but it could have been worse. Greg and I were on the bottom bunks. Greg slept pretty well but I just couldn't sleep soundly. I think the fact that there were strangers right above me just didn't give me much comfort when my baggage was right there in front of them for the taking. Anyway morning came pretty quickly and we got to our destination. Oh and did I mention that no one ever checked our tickets? I found that really odd. So our trip to the timeshare is a long one but I'll give you the nutshell version. It was very frustrating. I was surprised at the amount of people that didn't speak any english because I've always heard that people in italy do and it's those in Paris that don't. After three train rides with one guy on a power trip that thought he was important we made it to our final destination. Now the hard part was finding the Timeshare that we were staying at. The language barrier was again high in the sky. After a lof of frustation and even trying to call our timeshare and failing at that, we took a cab. The guy took us as far as his car would go. Did I tell you it was snowing in Italy as well. And yes we are staying on the Italian Rivera so snow is pretty uncommon there. The cab driver dropped us off and we had to walk about 1/4 mile up a very steep hill to the office of our timeshare. The lady there spoke English..WOOHOO!!! She took us to our place and gave us some great info on the town of Rapollo which is the town we are staying in. This info included a shuttle that takes us down to the town and picks us up as well. That is a GODSEND! So at 6pm we went to the market to pick up some food for the week. We are staying here the longest since it is the timeshare. The nice lady at the TS gave  us walking directions to the best market since there are actually three around the town. SO we got our Italian food, wine and chocolate. We came back to the timeshare and made an italian dinner and called it a night...well after doing some laundry of course. It was a hectic day but we are now in ITALY!!! :)

We slept in today which was much needed after the hectic travel and frustrating day we had yesterday. Greg is also fighting some kind of chest cold so he was in need of some good rest. We had a nice homemade breakfast with some good ol slow drip coffee. Greg also made some 'traditional' european coffee that was made in a small contraption that you heat over the stove top. I can't think of the name right now but maybe I'll be able to figure it out.

So our timeshare is amazing. It is almost too big for just the two of us. That's, of course, in comparision to what we have stayed in so far. I don't mind one bit. We have a "small kitchenette" which has enough room for a table and couch to fit in it. It's pretty big and a lot bigger than I expected. The bathroom is a good size but the one thing that I have noticed about the past two places we have stayed in is that they don't take showers, instead they take baths. Luckily they have shower wands so we can take a somewhat shower but there are no shower curtains so you have to be careful not to spray the whole bathroom while showering. The bedroom is simple but does the job it needs to do. There is a lot of closet space which is nice not to have to leave everything in the suitcase. Also we have an area where you walk in that is large enough for some cubbies, shelves and a hide-a-bed couch.

Oh so we have a tv in our place and of course everything is in Italian. BUT something that I find funny is that all of the Christmas commercials with Chrismas songs in them are english. Crazy but true. Speaking of television, Christmas isn't as commercialized here. There are some commericals about Christmas but not too many. There was a show on today that is actually a Hallmark Type of movie. I want to say it was called The Christmas Card. Mary, that was the movie that we watched recently. :) 

Our day ended up being a pretty quiet day. We ended up leaving our place around 3:30 and going to the car rental place. We didn't rent a car but did find a nice bar that was in the middle of happy hour. By happy hour I mean that you buy a drink and you get to eat from a nice appetizer buffet. I got a Spumante and Greg got white wine of some sort, but we can't remember. The appitizer buffet had carrots, chips, olives, mini sammies, bruchetta, and some other wonderful tasting things that I cannot name. The town that we are staying in has a neat shopping center. It's an open air mall I guess you would say and each store is VERY specialized. For instance a shoe store, a pharmacy, a clock store, and many more. Everything is kind of like a botique. It was also very interesting to learn the difference between a bar, cafe, pizzera, ristorante, and focciaria. Where to start.... Okay so a bar is simply like an american bar with few places to sit. A pizzera is basically like a takeout only pizza place, a cafe serves coffee (espresso, coffee, etc), a ristorante is a restaurant and are hard to come by, and finally a focciaria is like a snack bar with well, snacks. There are also open markets that only sell produce and are litteraly open. There are no doors the whole store front is open. Maybe i'll take some pictures of those places tomorrow. The bakeries have litterally bakery items. It's so different than America but it's very welcome. Also dogs are everywhere, with their owner of course. Most dogs are smaller and they seem to be allowed in the stores. Speaking of being allowed in stores, smoking is still allowed in some shopping areas. Seems very odd but it's true. There isn't as much smoking as I thought there would be either. Seems as though many people drink sparkling water so when we were at one of the open air produce markets looking at a water bottle to see if it was plain water we had one man telling us that the water was with "no gas" as he explained it. It was very kind of him.

So a few other observations while walking through the town of Rapollo. First off they don't decorate for Christmas too much. There is some decorations in town with lights. Those that do, more than likely have a santa "climbing" onto their deck or into a window. So from the street you see many backsides of Santa's climbing on walls. A few people have Chrismas trees in their windows.

Believe it or not Greg and I brought the snow to Paris. It was quite a site to see all the people get so hyped up about something. It was quite beautiful and I was pretty excited to see it myself. I'm all about the snow in December, but only December. Anyway, so in the morning Greg and I went to the Eiffel Tower, well near it anyway. There were SO many people hanging around and taking pictures. I had to laugh at these two guys in particular. I'm not exactly sure where they were from but the one was video taping the other singing a made up song with the tune of Walking in a Winter Wonder Land. After we went to the Shopping Lane. We did our share of shopping for the day and I was surprised to see as many people out and about as there were. I guess Parisiennes are not used to the snow. We got back to our B&B in the late afternoon just to pick up our things and head off to the train station. We got everything figured out there and decided to go get online to try and figure out our next day ahead. We headed to starbuck since they always seem to have WIFi... and they did BUT you had to pay for it!?!? It all started with that. First we went to that starbucks where they wanted 10 euro for three hours of WiFi. Greg asked one of the cashiers about free wifi and she said the McDonalds right around the corner. So we headed over there to find out that the only spot that the wifi worked was the upstairs and that was being used for a private party. Now first off I felt like I was in the US for a minute with the McDonalds and Starbucks but then no wifi???? What is that all about? Greg and I came to the conclusion that Paris is about 5 years behind the US when it comes to technology. Think about it. You can go to almost any coffee shop, bookstore, or fast food restaurant and have free wifi. Sure made me appreicate the US. After all our failed attempts to get onto the internet we headed back to the station to try and get our train set up for tomorrow. This ended up being another failure since we were crossing borders apparently the customer service people cannot find or track any tram/trains, etc. We went back out to the main area to find out where our train was departing from. We kept waiting and waiting and finally it came up....40 minute delay because of the weather. This, my friends, is another reason I love MN, we are prepared for this kind of stuff. :) So after a 40 minute delay we got onto our train and settled in to our cabin with two other strangers. Yes, we are supposed to sleep in this cabin and it did have bunk beds but I can't say that I slept much....(more of that in my next journal)
So how did I like Paris? Well, I loved the city of Paris but I wasn't a big fan of the Parisienes. They are not too friendly and to be quite honest many of them smell weird. LOL. I have to say that Paris is a busy place and it doesn't seem to slow down. I'm not sure I could ever move there, not that I was planning on that any time soon but if I was I would probably pick the country side of paris. OH and another thing about the Parisienes is that if they run into you, it's your fault and they glare at you. I just don't get it. We would be on the tram or even standing out of the way and someone would run in to one of us and bam, a glare. Oye.

So just so you all know we are in Italy and the town that we are staying in is WAY behind the times... Internet is almost impossible to find. :)

What a day....

Yes, Not kidding we went to all of that! I know we are crazy!! We both feel it tonight but did top off our night with a bottle of wine which helps the pain. 8:30 we had breakfast waiting for us and we chatted a little bit with our hostess, Claire. After that we were off to the races. Let me take you back to last night. We planned this all out. We planned our tram stops and what exactly we wanted to see at each place. So we had a plan and we weren't going to waste any time wondering. This was a marathon! If we were to visit Paris again I think we would spend a week there and probably a day to each of these places but we didn't have that kind of time. So off we go....

At the Louvre there was really only one thing I wanted to see, this was the Mona Lisa. So we get in find out where in the massive place the Mona Lisa is and we book it. I have to say it was well worth it. I always thought the picture was very small but it was larger than I thought. Greg said that they had moved it since he was there back in college. The room that the Mona Lisa is in is very well lite and has very high ceilings. It's not the only thing in the room but it is the center piece of the room. Again, you can take pictures so I did. :) After standing and staring at the actual Mona Lisa we wandered for awhile and ran into a few things that I didn't realize were at the Louvre. This included La Victoire de Samothrace, Venus and a few other sculptures. I had to laugh when we were at the Louvre. I took a picture of Venus and you may chuckle as well at the group of people in front of the sculpture.

Next was the Cathedrale Notre Dame. This was peaceful and beautiful. We ended up not going to the top but I think that was just find considering we went to the top of a different monument. Notre dam was literally a cathedral. It was so gorgeous inside. Mary, I lit a candle for your Mom at the Virgin Mother area. It was very peaceful there as well. There was a small nativity scene set up and I loved that there was no baby Jesus in the manager just yet. I'm guessing that the babe will be there on Christmas day.

From Notre Dame we were off to the Museum d'Orsay. Here there were many works by Van Gogh as well as quite a few other famous artists. Once again you could take picture (no flash and no tripod) so I tried my best. There was a good number of some impressionist work there which is Greg's favorite.

After d'Orsay we were off to Rodin. Now we're not positive if this was the original but we did get to see "The thinker" or one of them. This was a smaller museum which was actually the residence of Rodin himself. It was much smaller than the other museums and palaces we had been in which was a nice change.

The day was still early so we decided to walk to the Eiffel tower. AMAZING! There we met another couple that was from "the states" as they call it here. They were from DC so we exchanged picture taking of couples. So in that picture we are pretty far away from the tower. We walked to the end to the actual tower....HUGE!! Then off to the top we went. That's right, we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I think this was the most exciting thing thus far for the trip. I don't know why but it's just one of those thing where I will forever remember the amazing site of France from such a well known monument. Again there were many field trips there but that's okay. I'm really glad we went there and went there during the winter months. It was pretty crazy with how cold it was and I couldn't imagine the amount of people there in the warmer months! We stayed at the top until we just got too cold and headed towards the Champs Ellysees, which is a lot of shopping before you hit the Arc de Triomphe. But first we were inundated by really annoying people trying to sell "50% off" CRAP souvenirs. Seriously on the bridge that we had to walk there had to be at least 1 set of guys per 6 feet. It was very annoying. You learn quickly to not make eye contact and simply not say a word.

The Champs Ellysees is this large shopping area that we decided to just walk. We didn't go into any shops (but will tomorrow). We were actually looking for a place to warm up - coffee. At the end of the Rue (road) is the Arc De Triomphe. Another great monument. We decided not to go in to go to the top but to find the metro to go to a coffee shop and warm up.

The coffee shop, you may have heard of this place... starbucks. How sad is that, that starbucks has taken over Paris. We talked with Claire and she said that the quality control is so great there that the Parisans have really taken a liking to the place. We did go there and sadly I did partake in drinking coffee there. Our excuse is the price. You can get a lot of coffee for 3 euro or a little cup at some small coffee shop for the same price. The coffee there at starbucks is still very bold, which is the way that Paris does their coffee apparently. One funny thing is that the cashier that we had is from North Carolina. As soon as he spoke you could tell that he wasn't a native of Paris. It was great though to make some small talke with him. So we rested up and drank our coffee. I also enjoyed listening to the  french conversation that surrounded me. I didn't understand a word but it still was beautiful in itself.

Once we were done with our coffee we went to pick up dinner which ended up being at a grocery store. I'll say it again, the smell horribly! We got a bottle of wine, some chocolate, bread, cheese and a little meat. We walked to our B&B to call it a night.

And that my friends is how you see a great amount of Paris in ONE DAY! :)

Paris...

Highlights for the 15th were the Museum of the Palace of Versailles and the Pantheon.
And my first Crepe!

Ah Paris. It's out of this world. I have to say that I do like the Metro system better in Amsterdam. But that may be because it is above ground. The Paris system (Metro, Bus, RER?) or Tramway as they call it is a bit confusing but by the end of the day we are finally getting it. We did find our way around and figured out that Paris starts their business day around 9:30-10:00. I don't think the tramway is ever quiet either. Clair (our hostess) confirmed this by telling us that we could go down there around 2am in some part and it would be as busy as any other part of the day.

Another thing about Paris is the "look" of Paris. If you are wearing colors you will stick out. They all seem to wear very dark coloring. It looks nice but all the colors are dark. AND you better wear a scarf at all times. :)

So we went to the Palace of Versallies. Wow, the place was huge. First was the trip there which ended up being a train, not to be confused with tram. It took about 1/2 an hour to get there. The view was pretty great on the way there. I know it's kinda morbid to say but their cemetaries are sorta beautiful. They seem to be above ground. The walk to the Palace was a short one and easily we could see the place.

I couldn't believe how big this place or shall I say Palace is. You can only imagine so much until it's right there before your eyes. My pictures do not do it any justice. The grounds are huge and the Palace itself, gigantic. Greg and I had a two day museum pass which I would highly reccommend to anyone visiting Paris. (there are 3 and 5 day as well) So we by passed the slight line and got an audio tour...off we were onto the Palace. Granted we really only got to see a small part of the palace but even that was huge and it took us a great deal of time to go through. This took much more time then I would have ever imagined. I was surprised that you could take pictures. So I did, of course, take pictures. It's hard when you really get all caught up in where you are standing and what you are looking at. I still can't believe that people actually lived on those grounds. At the same time people were starving and they lived grandly. Guess that's how things go today as well but this was pretty extreme. We got to see quite a few paintings as well as some furniture used by the royality. Not to get off topic but there were many school field trips at the Palace of Versallies. How amazing would it be to go to school in Paris and have all these field trips at these amazing monuments and museums?!?! Anyway there were many many MANY kids! I thought it was pretty cute listening to them speak in French.

After the Palace we came back to our B&B for a bit and then took off to the Pantheon. Another beautiful place but not very large. Ever heard of the expression "Pantheon of men?" Well basically there are a great amount of "great" men (even some women) buired there. We went into the "crypt" which is in the basement of the Pantheon and looked at a bunch of tunnels that had dead people buried in them. The main level of the Pantheon was of course beautiful. There was a lot of marble!

From the Pantheon we walked around. Greg and I had our first Crepes of the trip. This was my first ever true crepe. I had a nutella crepe and Greg had a cheese crepe. They were made right in front of us which was great! It's actually quite in art in my opinion. We then walked down the street enjoying the night views and even went into a few of the local shops.

A decent nights rest we both had in the hotel last night. The tram was right outside our window which made for a thunderstrom like sound for the night. Basically it kept us sleeping and sleeping we did. We slept in till 10am, not exactly the plan but whatever, it didn't matter much. After checking out of the hotel we took the tram to central station to put our luggage in a locker for the morning and early afternoon. Our train didn't leave until 3:16 in the afternoon. After dropping off the luggage we picked up a quick breakfast in the Amsterdam Central. It was a deli/bakery type place. I got a bagel with ham and pinapple cream cheese and Greg got some kind of warm cheese thing wrapped in pastery. We ended up sharing the two items. We also picked up a Kaffie (as they call it) at another small place. The coffee here is BOLD!!  We then got back on the tram and took it to the Palace and Dam square. The palace is under construction so it wasn't the greatest site to see but I still took some pictures of it. The Dam is where Amsterdam supposedly started. (going to look this up to make sure that is correct.) Then we got back on the tram for a self guided tour of Amsterdam. It was brisk out but we can't complain. Yesterday we had met a couple that was from Canada where it was -40! Anyway we ended up getting to see quite as we got "lost" in Amsterdam. I do have to say there are ALOT of Coffee Bars. This is also known as Marijuana bars. Needless to say we kept out of thse. We ended up by the Van Gough museum which we plan on goin to on the last dayt of our trip. It was getting to be late so we headed back to the Amsterdam entral. Surprisingly we really haven't gon in to any shops just yet. I'm wanting to save the money for Paris and Italy :) Anyway we waited for our train and found out we were a bit early so Greg got us some Starbucks. I know I know, I hate that place and it's almost as prevelant as McDonalds. Okay I"m overreacting but there are quite a few starbucks around but McDonalds does take the crown. It's everywhere. Back to our coffee, Greg got us a pepperiment mocha which hit the spot. On the train we watched a movie and not only had dinner (sandwich with a drink) but we also received a "snack" which was by far the best chocolate muffin I have ever had. That was served with tea. We arrived in Paris a little after 6pm so the sun was down. We didn't get to see much on our way to our beautiful B&B BUT it was rush hour and wow... to many drivers on the road. It was crazy. We'll see what tomorrow brings! :)

We finally made it to Europe! Our first stop... Amsterdam. But let's back up a few hours, which by the way it is 2:00 there and 8:00pm here. So Saturday late morning my dad dropped us off at the Minneapolis airport. We had a pretty short flight and empty flight to Philly. We got on to the plane and to our seats but once everyone was seated we decided to move. There was a gal in front of us that decided she needed everyone to smell her in the back of the plane. Her perfume was way to strong for us. We moved and then with in 2 hours we were in Philly. Once we were in Philly Greg had to get a Philly Cheese Steak. We asked a few of the airline workers and ended up at a place named Chicky and Petes. Greg thoroughly enjoyed his cheese steak & I actually had a little taste as well. We also had crab fries which was crinkle fries with Old Bay seasoning on it. Since we had a long layover we started to watch District 9 and almost missed our plane because they ended up changing the time and gate without us knowing. Luckily someone had asked us a question so we took our heaphones off and heard our names over the intercome. The plane ride was good. It was an overnight flight.  The new Harry Potter movie was the inflight entertainment. Let me tell you, it's not easy to sleep on a plane when you are tall! By 4am (10:00am here) we were in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is great! We took the train to Amsterdam Centeral from the airport with the help from a nice local flight attendant. Amsterdam Central is CRAZY!! Its a tram, bus and train station. From there we took a tram (small train) to our hotel. Our hotel is called the Plantage hotel. It's in a nice neighborhood right next to the zoo and botanical gardens. After dropping off our stuff at the hotel we decided to go to the Ann Frank house. I highly reccommend it. It was a somber walk but amazing at the same time. To actually walk through the house where Ann Frank and her family hid surreal. She had decorated her bedroom with some postcards and movie star pictures. The originals were still up there behind glass! After the museum we walked around for awhile as the sun set. We then went to a local pub called the Pancake house. The food was pretty good but nothing extra ordinary.

I think we are calling it a day for today though. We are pretty exhausted and have lots to do tomorrow. This includes taking off to Paris!! I can't wait!!!
