New Year's Weekend on the Gulf

Only Mad Dogs and … Sailors would head out to sea in frigid temperatures

    in this ‘once in a blue moon’ event !!

They can only hope it was a ‘once in a blue moon’ event !  Chilling temperatures were not the only challenge! An extreme low tide left many boats aground forcing determined sailors to push, plow, winch and kedge their way to the Gulf. And that was before the greater challenge …the start line!

Saturday Jan 2^nd 2010 the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club hosted its 3^rd Annual New Year Regatta. 18 competitors from SW Florida entered this 1 day event. They were awakened to chilling temperatures in the mid 40s under a full moon that blew favorable winds out of the North gusting from13 to 18 knots. These Northerly winds and full moon caused this inconvenient excessively low tide that resulted in a few boats being delayed in arriving at the start of the event.

Two races were conducted by Principal Race Officer Edward Brandt from NSYC Commodore Tom O’Reilley’s command central Committee boat, the “Jo-Sea-O”, named for his supportive wife “Jo”!! 

Three to five foot seas prevailed most of the day as the spinnaker sailor’s fleets started the regatta with a course that lead them from near Gordon Pass, North, parallel to the beach approaching The Naples Pier, and back to the finish line near Gordon Pass.

The Non Spinnaker and True Cruising Classes enjoyed tough and tight competitive camaraderie as they set course north, parallel to the beach for ¾ mile before turning west an additional 3 miles and returning back to the finish line near Gordon Pass.

NSYC Members, Dennis & Jennifer Auray positioned inflated marks anchored in the offshore position, while member Liz Grogan and her 2 man team placed similar turning marks near the Naples Pier and North of the committee boat near Gordon Pass.

Committee boat work always requires team members with a strong constitution and cast iron stomach as they remain at anchor for the duration of the regatta once the course has been established. This event may be named “AS THE STOMACH CHURNS”, or may be the race committee theme song presented for the entertainment of the competitors and guests attending the awards banquet.

ALL Competitors were rewarded for their attendance with a bag of boating momentos consisting of items donated by “The SW FL Rigging Headquarters - WEST MARINE STORE #501, located on Marco Island where 2 out of 3 employees are sailors frequently found participating and supporting sailing in Southwest FL.

The winners in each class were treated to an award provided by SLAVENSKAYA VODKA including their Original, Cranberry, Pepper, and Starka flavored premium Vodka. “BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE” … THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT was an exhibition of ballroom dancing vignettes performed by US National Team award winning brother and sister dance pair, Naples own, Nicholas & Rochelle Kharlamov, son & daughter of Yuri & Irene Kharlamov. Live music was provided by the famous Perry Fotos orchestra… Perry recalled and compared playing for the likes of Arthur and Katherine Murray when they were a beginning act in Chicago.

The Kharmalov family is the official importer and distributor of SLAVIANSKAYA VODKA. National Sales Manager, Gennady Kanevsky and son Lenny shared with our members the fact that SLAVENSKAYA is the premium vodka being served in Naples by most clubs and upscale establishments.

Competitors and guests were pleasantly rewarded with their choice of Chef Ralph’s award winning Prime Rib or Tilapia dinners. They were further impressed by the service level managed by Walter Gudino’s staff and General Manager Manny Blanco’s reliable organizational skills.

It was truly another NSYC event to remember where competitors were recognized for their outstanding team work of balancing crews and crafts with the elements afforded them naturally through wind and water.

“REGATTA” is often defined as  “An assembly of yachts all headed for the same party”, and what a party it was for all who started 2010 enjoying Naples, The Gulf, and The Naples SAILING & Yacht Club.
