Walking bridges were built and go along the mountain sides. You're right up on the creek and have such spectacular views!

101_1322.JPG
We can now hear the creek - the sound gets louder as you walk up the trail. You'll see why in a bit.

101_1325.JPG
Moss covers everything that doesn't get enough sunlight. It is soft to the touch.

101_1324.JPG
101_1324.JPG 2009-01-11

101_1326.JPG
What a great view of the falls with the moss-covered branches hanging in the foreground!

101_1327.JPG
The first of the falls. It is said that fish swim upstream to spawn in the winter but we didn't see any on our journey.

101_1328.JPG
Don't the falls look like a step ladder leading upward? Simply gorgeous!

101_1329.JPG
Notice the moss lining the mountain side ... these views are simply breath taking!

101_1332.JPG
Moss is everywhere - even on the rocks along side the creek.

101_1330.JPG
This little fall is coming down the mountain side. We are told that in the Spring time, these falls are huge because of the melting snow. I can't wait to hike this again in the Spring!

101_1335.JPG
My beloved :-)

101_1334.JPG
Two falls merging together.

101_1337.JPG
What can I say but beautiful!

101_1336.JPG
More beauty!

101_1338.JPG
This rock was almost as tall as I am and covered in this soft moss.

101_1339.JPG
101_1339.JPG 2009-01-11

101_1341.JPG
Notice the bottom of this rock? The moss can't gather where the water constantly hits it.

101_1342.JPG
Typical view of the entire path.

101_1343.JPG
WOW!!! Spectacular view!

101_1344.JPG
As we were driving away, this is what we were seeing ... beautiful Douglas Fir Trees and low lying clouds over the mountains.

Alaskan Land Tour and Cruise
John and I went to Alaska from 8/23 through 9/5/09. Ken and Sandy Davidson met us in Anchorage. Emmanuel and Theresa went as well. What a blast!! I know there are a LOT of pictures but I wanted them recorded "somewhere" cuz some of you wanted to see them. :-)
Awesome foliage at our place
There's so much color on the property! I couldn't take pics of all of it cuz the breeze kept making the roses move. Just gorgeous!
More Oregon Photos
These photos were taken between 4/23 and 5/12/09. Adam was home for his wedding and we had quite a good number of visitors from the East Coast. Some are beautiful pictures taken by Pam Banegas, others are taken by Ken Davidson, Emma Plourde and John. I will post wedding pictures as soon as they are available
Camping on the Coast of Oregon
There are so many places to go camping here. Each one is gorgeous. This particular campground is not far from where my parents retired to back in 1980. They have since passed away but I feel close to them when I come here.
The campground is called Winchester Bay - Salmon Harbor RV Park and is located at the mouth of the Umpqua River as it dumps into the ocean. We were parked one row away from the river and the waves were crashing against the rocks. In the distance we could hear the roar of the ocean. What a relaxing time for sure! The weather was outstanding - in the upper 50's to low 60's during the day. And of course, near the ocean, there's always a breeze in the afternoons. The campground is located between two jetties so we really did not have an ocean view. Nonetheless, is was a wonderful weekend!
Come out and visit us! We'll have plenty of places to go!
John's Stained Glass Business
John took classes on making stained glass from a retired police officer, Jim Hunt, who owns his own stained glass business here in Florence. As with anything that John undertakes, he puts himself into it and does a great job ... if I DO say so myself :-)
His first project was of Heceta Head Lighthouse. It is approximately 19x24" and, according to Jim Hunt, is valued at $320. He complimented John saying that he had never seen a new student do as good a job as John had done. Why does this not surprise me?
If you know of anyone who would be interested in one, pass John's name along. It's a great pass time for him and I believe will be a way for him to work from home as he continues to recuperate. :-) Just wanted to share my excitement in John's work!
Heceta Head Lighthouse
John and I went to visit Haceta Head Lighthouse and the tour was magnificent. It is currently being renovated and the beacon is not shining due to repairs needed. However, the tour was still awesome and the vistas spectacular!!
Here's the history on the lighthouse that I found on-line:
"The cape owes its name to Don Bruno de Heceta, who in 1775 embarked on a secret voyage for the Queen of Spain to sail up the West Coast. Due to the onslaught of scurvy, Heceta and his crew turned back just before the Columbia River, but not before he noted the shallow waters and rocky headland that now bear his name.
A century later, mariners frequenting the dark waters between Coos Bay and Newport asked for a lighthouse to guide their journeys up and down the coast. Heceta Head proved an ideal location, but the construction project in this isolated place was no small feat. In 1892, an order was placed with the Chance Brothers in England for a powerful First Order Fresnel Lens to be shipped to Heceta Head, where construction of two Queen Anne-style Lightkeepers’ houses and Lighthouse tower had already begun. Building materials were transported over a single lane wagon road or placed on rafts and pushed overboard at Cape Cove to float ashore with the incoming tide.
On March 30, 1894, the lighthouse cast its first beam. The first eight years were trying times for the three Lightkeepers and their families who lived in the little community of Heceta Head. Many Lightkeepers were unable to handle the sparse and isolated conditions and moved on. Head Keeper Olaf Hansen worked for over fifteen years to make the Lightstation a sustainable community. Olaf started the vegetable gardens, a schoolhouse and the Heceta Head Post Office.
Much changed in the 1930s, when Oregon finished construction of U.S. Highway 101 and the Lightstation received electricty. Motorist frequently traveled up and down the Oregon Coast, which ended the Lightkeepers’ years of isolation. Electricity allowed for a partially automated lighthouse, ending the duty of one Lightkeeper.
The 1930s ended with the retirement of the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Its successor, the U.S. Coast Guard, retired the Head Keeper’s dwelling and sold the house for $10. The salvaged lumber returned to Mapleton to build what’s now known as the Alpha Bit Store and Cafe.
During World War II, the Coast Guard Beach Patrol manned Heceta Head with 75 men. They guarded the beaches between Florence and Yachats with attack dogs and lived in wooden bunkers where the Head Keeper’s house once stood. From 1925 to 1950 Cap and Ma Herman witnessed all of these drastic changes. Cap opted not to take a Coast Guard rank and was the only civilian allowed on the property during the war.
After WWII, the Coast Guard continued to man the Lightstation as an aide to navigation. Two men and their families remained at Heceta. In 1963, Head Lightkeeper Oswald Allick witnessed the end of the era of Lightkeepers when the Lighthouse was automated and turned over to computers. The Keeper’s House was then turned over to the U.S. Forest Service.
From 1970 to 1995, the U.S. Forest Service leased the Keepers House to Lane Community College for use as a satellite campus. The wall dividing the two dining rooms was removed to create a classroom space. Students were able to enjoy the Oregon Coast while taking classes, retiring afterwards to the second floor, which was furnished with bunk beds.
When the Keepers House was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1973, the U.S. Forest Service looked for alternative uses that would allow the Keepers House to be more accessible to the public and to share the rich history. It was decided that a Bed & Breakfast would make this feasible.
Heceta Head entered a new era in 1995, when Mike and Carol Korgan were chosen to be the first Innkeeper’s for the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast. As volunteers, the Korgans helped start the careful restoration of the interior. Now retired, their daughter Michelle and husband Steven continue to restore the Keepets House and invite the public to enjoy this National Treasure."
Sweet Creek Falls
What a beautiful hike! It is rated "Easy" but it's definitely worth it, even for the biggest enthusiast!
Mr. Sweet left Illinois in the 1800's along with his family and 100 covered wagons. They crossed 2200 miles to Mapleton, Oregon where they made their home. Mr. Sweet's land covered a creek with these beautiful falls - they became known as Sweet Creek Falls.
We had a gorgeous day to hike the trail - approximately 3 miles long. This had been day 4 of beautiful sunshine and temps in the low 50's. The nice thing about the weather on the coast is that the temperatures only vary about 10 degrees between night and day. We have had two winter storms. Contrary to what we had been told by others, we have had as many sunny days as rainy days. One only has to travel an hour inland to find a change of weather. It rains a LOT in Eugene, which is only an hour away. Florence is known as "the best kept secret" in places to live!
23 Mariner Lane
John and I have found a place to rent in Florence. It's a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with a nice 2-car garage for John. It's in a gated community and very beautiful. We even have an RV lot next door to store our RV with electrical and a station to dispose of sewer. We feel very blessed!!! We are moving in starting January 15th.
Lincoln City KOA
Our friends, Bob and Lynn Van Atta are full-time KOA workers. They are full-time RV'ers and are enjoying going from campground to campground. This KOA is their next assignment beginning in May. We took these pictures for them so they could see what to expect.
Oregon Scenery
The latest pictures of the Oregon coast were taken on Tuesday (12/30) while on our way to Lincoln City, an hour and a half from Florence. The lighthouse is the beautiful Haceta Head Lighthouse, the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Isn't it beautiful? Most of the other pictures were taken at Depoe Bay about 15 minutes before Lincoln City. Depoe Bay is known for its whale watching - the whales come to visit in October and November. We didn't get to see any whales but got to see quite a few seals. The coastline is absolutely gorgeous here. I can't wait to see it in the summertime.
Status Update
Well, we've been here over 5 weeks now. It's hard to believe it has been 2 months since we left Virginia! Since that time, I've gotten a part-time job working with my brother in his hearing aid business: Best for Hearing. I absolutely love it.
The biggest news is Aaron and Emma's wedding. Both of them arrived from their respective military training on December 5th and announced that they would be married the following week. We threw together a beautifully quaint and simple wedding at my brother's home. One of his Pastors officiated and the ceremony was precious! They got to spend 3 days together married and then we had to drive Aaron to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he will be stationed for the next three years. Emma left today (12/19) for Hawaii and should be arriving there around 3:00 this afternoon. That will be her home (on Kawaii) for the next three years. Guess where we're going to be going on vacation?? :-) Sweeeeeet!
John is doing well. He has a follow up appointment with a surgeon and oncologist on January 5th in Eugene, which is about an hour away from here. I guess this will be normal for the next five years - check ups and blood work to see how he's coming along. Thank you all for your prayers!
I've also posted some pictures of the beautiful snow that we got here this week. They have not had such weather since 1977 and the bitter cold that followed was last seen in 1917! I guess we brought it with us from Virginia!
We've Arrived!!
Praise the Lord! We have finally arrived in Westlake, OR.

The last two days have been raining but that's OK. We're here and that's all that matters!
Our total trip duration was 22 days and we were ready to be settled! The next few days will be filled with running errands. We are parked next to my brother's horse stall on a wonderfully level cement pad! We're not sure if we're going to stay in our RV the entire time or go to a campground. But for right now, we will stay until we make other plans.
Now we'll concentrate on getting ourselves settled in. Thank you all for your prayers!
John and Kate
Two more days!
We are pulling out of Lodi, CA this morning and will be heading to Garberville, CA for the night. We should be seeing the Red Woods tomorrow and then finally heading to our new home on Tuesday! :-)
California - the last State before Oregon
Well we've made it from one coast to the other. We've entered our last State before we get to Oregon. We are hoping to get to Oregon by next Monday or Tuesday. California is so long, we're not really sure how long it will take us to get through it.
This latest album contains pictures of just outside of Bakersfield, CA. We are spending the night at the Orange Grove RV Park.

We drove up the coast of Oregon to Lincoln City and these are some of the views we were able to capture. Haceta Head Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse in the world. The pictures of the breaking waves were taken in Depoe Bay, Oregon's place for whale sighting. Enjoy :-) More to come with future trips.
