Volunteers

These are the long term and short term volunteers that help Emmanuel run on a day-to-day basis.

About Volunteers...

Volunteers come from all over the world all year-round to visit Emmanuel and offer their talents or skills to improve the quality of life of the children and staff. Volunteers coming from Denmark come though a volunteer preparation program called "IMPACT" while volunteers that come from the United States or Canada go through our stateside volunteer coordinator Becky Clifton (volunteer@orphanageemmanuel.com).

Volunteers at Emmanuel are vital in the daily functioning at Emmanuel. They take on various tasks such as passing out medicine, translating sponsor letters, teaching English, doing crafts with the children, playing with the toddlers, tending to the horses, organizing soccer games, etc. Volunteers visit for various lengths of time--the longer the better! God is always faithful to supply Emmanuel with fresh volunteers! We have very nice facilities for both the male and female volunteers and we welcome long-term volunteers all year-round.

About John...

John comes to Emmanuel from Southern California. 23-year old John returned to Emmanuel in December 2008 after he visited with his Church (Sandals) in August that same year. He felt a strong calling to mission work and after much prayer, he decided to sell all he owned and move to Emmanuel where he is now considered a long term volunteer. At home in California, he worked in real estate and was studying real estate law, but here at Emmanuel, he helps coordinate the male volunteers, works with plumbing and does anything else that is needed from day to day (i.e. meat cutting, doing handy work, etc). John is a very loving and happy person to be around. All who come into contact with John are sure to find themselves in a better mood after talking with him for a few minutes. John hopes to continue living a life of service to others through missionary work where ever it is that he feels God calling him.

Becoming a Volunteer

Start Here!

Volunteering

At Emmanuel a lot of the daily chores and activities done with the kids are performed by our short and long term volunteers. We receive both male and female volunteers in all ages.
Usually a volunteer will be assigned specific tasks according to needs at Emmanuel and skills of volunteer, although many volunteers carry out a variey of activities while being here.

the most common areas where we use our volunteers are:

- Early childhood stimulation ( ages 2 - 5 )
- Children with mental and behavioural problems
- Clinic and medicine supervision.
- Farm and Green house chores
- Sports, crafts, music and recreational activities with the children.
- Maintenance and Odd jobs.
- The school

It is the volunteer coordinator who in cooperation with each volunteer will decide on their individual activities and we are open to suggestions from volunteers with a specific skill they would like to share with the children while being here.

Emmanuel expects that you

Does that description fits you? Then Emmanuel can give you

If you are interested in being long-term volunteer please:

Long-Term Volunteer

Long-term volunteers are an important resource to Emmanuel. It usually takes about a month's time to settle in and get into the "groove" of how the orphanage operates. Those that stay longer than 6-months are referred to as "long-term" volunteers whereas those that stay less than 6-months, but longer than 30-days are considered "short-term" volunteers.

If you wish to come to Emmanuel as a couple or as a family, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Katja, before beginning the application process. Reading the
volunteer guidelines in the section below will be a great help to planning your trip.

Those interested in becoming a long-term volunteer should do the following things:

Both male and female volunteers alike are accepted by Emmanuel year-round.
the most common areas where we use our volunteers are:

  • Early childhood stimulation ( ages 2 - 5 )
  • Children with mental and behavioural problems
  • Clinic and medicine supervision.
  • Farm and Green house chores
  • Sports, crafts, music and recreational activities with the children.
  • Maintenance and Odd jobs.
  • The school

In order to determine the area you will be of greatest impact during your stay at Emmanuel, your application will be reviewed by our staff to see what special skills or talents you possess. Many of our volunteers do not have a specific skill or trade they wish to perform while they're here and even work in different areas while at Emmanuel than they do at home. Once you arrive, you will sit down with a staff member to discuss the areas that they feel you will work best in while here.

Short-Term Volunteer

A short-term volunteer as defined by Orphanage Emmanuel is someone who wishes to stay between 30-days and six (6) months. If you wish to stay for a longer period of time, then you would be considered a "long-term" volunteer. Before beginning the application process, please do the following:

If you wish to visit Emmanuel as a married couple or as a family, please contact Katja via e-mail (emmanuel@libdata.com).

Becoming a Volunteer Visitor...

There are those people that wish to come to Emmanuel for less than 30-days for various reasons. Some who come will love the experience they receive and come back for another short visit or even come and stay longer. Experiencing Emmanuel first-hand is the best way to learn how we operate on a daily basis. If you wish to come as a "volunteer visitor", please contact our volunteer coordinator, Katja, at emmaneul@libdata.com before beginning the process.

After speaking with her, these are some of the things you will need to do:

Summer Volunteers

During the summer months Emmanuel is blessed with lots of extra help. Many college students who are on summer break decide to spend their summer with us. They help to complete many projects that otherwise would not get finished. Many others also help around the farm.

About Lynn...

Lynn has been serving at Emmanuel since August 2009. At her young age of 26 she has already had three years of experience teaching art classes in a primary school in her hometown of Orlando, Florida. Hence she is currently using her skills and experience to help with art classes for gifted kids. Teaching in the United States has not only added the final touch to her didactic talents but has also helped her to discipline the children at Emmanuel. Besides her tasks at school Lynn is our girl for everything handing out medicine, assisting teams, organizing activities with the kids, working in the toddlers house and helping out at the office.

During several mission trips and her travel experience she has fallen in love with the Latin America, its climate, the landscape and - of course - its children. Having the desire to serve as a long-term volunteer at a missionary project but still wanting to stay close to her family Lynn decided to give up her teaching career and looked for an orphanage in Central America. She found Emmanuel on the Internet and decided to bless us with her presence until July 2010.

About Nancy & Derrek...

Nancy and Derek, both 24, decided to leave their lives as youth minister and exterminator in pest control behind to spend their second year of marriage volunteering at Emmanuel. Before coming to Honduras Nancy acquired a degree in sociology and religion in 2007 and worked as a youth minister (leaves Derek for the pest control) until coming here in June of 2009. Derek finished his general science degree in 2008 and spent one year gaining experience that helps him keeping cockroaches from entering the couple's little refuge in their staff apartment.

The Lehmans are an artistic couple using their gifts playing drums (Derek) and singing (Nancy) in the church worship band. While Derek gives drum classes to an older boy Nancy is the coordinator of the school's art program hoping to increase its size from currently 20 to up to 200 kids! During the rest of their time Nancy and Derek can be seen wrestling kids or cows respectively. Nancy helps handing out medicine to the kids and works at the toddler's house. Derek spends his time working at the dairy barn and helps out in the clinic. After returning to their home in Oklahoma both plan to go back to college, Derrek wanting to gain a PHD in physical therapy and Nancy studying to become a high-school teacher.

About Anne...

Anne arrived here with the latest group from Impact in September 2009.  She is 19 years old and had worked in a kindergarten class before coming to Emmanuel.  Upon returning home to Denmark in December, she will continue to work with a kindergarten class.

Her work in Denmark has equipped her with many ideas and skills to use at Emmanuel even though the challenges of her work here differ widely from Denmark.  While being here she is going to work with the special needs children, specifically supporting one girl in a special-needs class.  Besides, she is coaching a girls soccer team and hanging out medicine to the girls.

About Ditte...

Yes, your eyes haven't deceived you. The Jacobsens have arrived as a double, adding even more confusion to some children's belief that all light-skinned Europeans who arrive here are related. Being Anne's twin sister, Ditte is also 19 years old. Even though the author of this blog stretches the fact that Anne and Ditte are twins, they tend to emphasize that they have taken different paths since middle school.

Ditte has just graduated from a High School specialized on Business Administration. Having obtained a specialized Business-High-School degree she decided to study something completely different in college. After returning home in December she is going to get a degree in communication. Meanwhile she spends her time at Emmanuel being the volunteer in charge of the crafts house, working in the K and Pre-K classes, handing out medicine, and organizing activities with the kids.

About Lea...

Lea arrived here in the end of September with a new group of Danish volunteers. At the age of 18 years old, she just graduated from High School in Denmark. In her home country she lives on the small and beautiful island of Bornholm. At her young age this is her first challenge to live in a foreign country and to be away from home for a long period of time.

Arriving at Emmanuel she was surprised to see the actual size of Emmanuel and how many children live here. She is very impressed with how the children and staff care for this place to keep it beautiful. She helps to make the kids' lives even more beautiful by working with the special needs children, helping at the toddler house, organizing the craft house, and giving medicine to the girls. Together with other Danish volunteers she has also introduced the children at Emmanuel to what is now their new favorite game, Rundbold (a Danish version of Baseball.)

About Fie...

Fie is 19 years old and as many of the other European volunteers who come here she has just graduated from High School. She is from the same island of Bornholm as Lea. They attended the same High School and decided to volunteer at Emmanuel together for four to five months. Fie heard about Emmanuel from a friend who has volunteered with Impact at a different project.

At the orphanage Fie is currently our soccer pro; she has been a member of a girls-soccer team since she was eight years old! She shares her skills with the kids by coaching the girls at Emmanuel in soccer. Her chores include working with the special needs children, working with the toddlers and doing odd jobs such as swinging a paint brush. Until now the biggest challenge she has faced during her stay at Emmanuel has been the language barrier even though she seems to get along quite well using her hands, feet, and a soccer ball.

About Cecilie...

Cecilie, 19, from Denmark decided to come to Emmanuel after a former Impact volunteer shared his experiences about volunteering in Honduras with her. Having just graduated from High School she had the desire to share the blessings and love she received growing up, with children who are experiencing a momredifficult childhood. She is planning to extend her blessings to our children until January 2010.

During her first week at Emmanuel, Cecilie had the opportunity to expand upon her limited farm experience by gaining first-hand experience in animal processing at Emmanuel. Her introduction to work on the orphanage farm was to help kill 400 chickens and several pigs. Besides gaining insights about the origin of our meat supply, Cecilie works in the horse program where she teaches children to ride horeses and she also organizes different activities with the kids. With her 16 years of experience in horse-back riding and participation in showjumping tournaments she is definitely a very helpful addition to our farm volunteers.

About Michael...

22-year old Michael is one of the rare volunteers that find their way from Ohio to Honduras. After several small Mission Trips to Mexico and France Michael decided to commit himself to a three-month volunteer stay at Emmanuel. Before coming here he graduated from Ohio University in Music Production - a degree which, according to him, did nothing to prepare him for his first job at Emmanuel which was to repair dozens of doors.

Even though he came unprepared to do handiwork around the property, he tackles his tasks of doing odd jobs, working on the farm and dealing with pluming issues with a servant's attitude. Throughout the day while he works and learns the Spanish language, you will notice his disciplined labor and his personal development. Until he leaves in December 2009 he enjoys being with the children and getting to know the many different cultures that make up Emmanuel's volunteers and staff.

About David...

David, 22, is a fresh college graduate from Ohio. Finishing his degree of Business Administration he decided to take a year off before going to grad school. When he heard about Emmanuel through Terrez, one of our staff members, he felt a calling to come here and return some of the blessings he had received throughout his childhood. Before coming here he had already been on several short-term mission trips and studied 5 months abroad in Australia. During his several stays abroad, he not only acquired his acceptance of different cultures, but he has also learned to appreciate his loved ones back home.

With those experiences in mind he approaches his tasks here with ease and a hint of humor which he definitely needs while killing chicken and pigs on the farm. Besides his farm duties, he tackles whatever needs to be done from cutting grass to pluming. David is planning to spend September through December 2009 at the orphanage, and possibly extending his stay for a longer period of time.
