Our tour company picked us up at the train station and took us to our hotel in Sapa, it was no tuktuk either! by the way, georgeanna's last name somehow got lost in translation(or on another piece of paper) and kelly stovin became ms. stonn. amazing.

Hilltribe family
These women are from the tribes that live in the mountains. They dress in traditional clothing that they design and make themselves. Mothers and daughters come to Sapa town to sell their crafts to shops and tourists..everything from purses, jewelry, hats, shoes, jackets, blankets, you name it. The only problem is that they are very very pushy! The mothers hang around in the background and they send in their cute daughters to sell you things. The children speak better english than my 16-year old Thai students and these kids stop going to school way earlier than that. The girls ask where you are from, your names, if you like it here, what you will buy, when you will buy it, and all in perfect english. If you even hint at the fact that you will buy something later...they will stalk outside your hotel until you buy from them, giving you a major guilt trip and even remembering your name. All in all they are smart and great salesmen, needless to say they make a killing with the silly farangs that come through town.

Tony's heart was in the right place, even though he would surge ahead on the trail and leave us behind once in a while...er, i mean all the time. don't worry, he kept in touch by whistling and returning our exhausted cries for help when we didn't which way or how to scale the treacherous mountainside. thanks tony, you're gggrrrrreeaatt.

Lunchtime!
There were 4 porters that hiked up with us, basically one for each of us. They carried our sleeping bags, water, and food. Amazing guys and extremely, almost supernaturally, athletic. Check out the shoes they hiked up this mountain in...crazy. And look ahead to see the "backpacks" that they carried our gear in. Bad ass.

Bread, cheese, veggies, fruit, cans of tuna, and hard boiled eggs - lunch of champions!

IMG_4391.JPG 2009-10-05

The porters "backpacks"
I think these are the traditional carriers of the hilltribes and they climbed 8 hours a day, for three days, up steep rocks and on hands on knees at times, with these on their backs. They don't look too comfortable and were heavy with camping gear, food, water, and of course..machetes. We tried them on once just to see what it felt like and we nearly tipped over. My respect for these men goes beyond words.

Do those pants look familiar Dad?
Yes Dad - these are the same pants you use to go kayaking in, complete with zip off pant legs. And if i,t was warmer I would have transformed them into the stylish shorts, but alas it was too cold for fashion. I didn't plan on being cold in SE Asia, so I did not pack any cold outdoor hiking gear. When we got to Sapa we found an EMS-esque store and each bought a pair of these in various earthtones. We thought our Dads would be proud!

My Team
I think they heard someone say this phrase on one of their anime nonsense shows, at least we weren't Team Pokemon.

Team Name: Jack the Ripper
What's with these kids and their violent team names! In the team song, they do a version of "We Will Rock You"..except...yes you guessed it...they sing "we will, we will, kill you" and have matching hand motions. gotta love it

Starlight
These kids were actually cute...they sang "twinkle twinkle little star". No mention of blood or the devil. good job!

Team Clever
They just sang "We Will Rock You". not so clever, Clever.

Fluk and Team Star
He is the man. He rocked it, stole the show...and every other camp activity we did. Just check out my movie of the Banana Dance. nuff said

Team Red of Devil
They made me participate in their dark arts - I swear I didn't wanna do it mama!
The song ended with a bellowing devil laugh, quite impressive actually. cute kids too...right?

the powder game claims another.
this is Jason, the Chinese Language teacher. He has to teach Thai kids how to speak Chinese by teaching in English, which is also his second language. It is the only common language to communicate in...talk about a language barrier.

Jan and Rich
These are the other two MedisKids english teachers I am in Takhli with...very fun, laid back couple. He is from Australia and she is from San diego, they met last year teaching in Korea and got married a few months ago!

Students: 1, Farangs: 0
This is Lia - she teaches down by the beach south of Bangkok and just came up for the weekend camp. She is from NYC and used to be a safari guide in Eastern Africa, wow.

FACT: Asians love to give the peace sign. always.
