Videos of Tethered Flaming Arrow Test Shots

First Test Shot of Flaming Arrow, Vietnam 1969.wmv

Test Shot of Flaming Tethered Arrow with Cone Shield Tip 6.4.11 (Evening)
This is the first test of an arrow with a cone shield on tip. The purpose is to keep the arrow flame from blowing out on the way to the target.  The design is similar to that used for the 1992 Olympics Torch Lighting Ceremony http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vumkrLwcF8&feature=related  . We had some problems with the flame blowing out on some of our shots, even with a 30# recurve bow. This is the best solution we have found and tried so far. Credit goes to Lee for researching and experimenting with this design.   See Lee's test shot with rain down flame from target at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi96PCErFCw    Further refinements TBD.  See album on page two for construction info. 1992 Arrow Tip Picture at: http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?p=6916915

Test Shot of Flaming Tethered Arrow 5.14.11.wmv
Here is a test shot with a 33" flu-flu arrow with a 2" fire wick tip saturated with Coleman camp fuel (white gas) about 25 minutes after sunset.  40# bow but not at max draw length.  I'll try to make a more visible test next week about 15 minutes after sunset. Be sure to have your arrow length made about 3 or 4 inches longer than your standard draw length.

Test Shot of Tethered Arrow 4.26.11(Morning): 50 Yards
First video of test shot of tethered arrow at a Trojan Horse mini target on my garage 150 feet away. The upward angle is 11 degrees which equates to shooting at a target 30 vertical feet above horizontal ground level.

Note the wire and wire guides on the arrow. The arrow penetrated the 1/2 plywood behind the one inch styrofoam target face. This shot was made with kinetic energy (punch) to spare with a 40# pull recurve bow. I am confident that the results would be the same for a slightly more elevated target at say a 40 foot height above ground (15 degree elevation at 150 feet distance). The distance from the target could even be extended to 60 to 90 yards for this bow or a slighty heavier pound pull bow of 50# or 55#. See still photos on second page of this site to see progress of arrow from release (technically "loose") to impact.

Test Shot of Tethered Arrow 4.26.11(Morning): 50 Yards
Second video of test shot. (same info as above).

Test Shot of Tethered Arrow 4.26.11 (Afternoon): 90 Yards
Test shot of tethered arrow at a target on a pine tree 90 Yards (270 feet) away. The upward angle of the wire is 8 degrees. This equates to shooting at a target 38 vertical feet above horizontal ground level.  As a result of testing, I am confident that an archer could easily shoot a flaming arrow into the Trojan Horse torso 40 feet high  (15 degree up angle) from a distance of 50 yards with a 35# to 40# pull bow  (maybe even 30# for some Amazons). See still pictures on second page for more info.

Archery Master Updates

Thank You!

Greetings, Archers, Amazons, fire nymphs and assistants!

Thank you for being a member of the Trojan Horse archery project. I offer my sincere appreciation for a job well done under very trying circumstances. Each of you made very important contributions to the successful flaming arrow ignition of the Trojan Horse. We set a very high standard for live participant involvement in a major art installation burn.

Each of us will have memories to treasure always. Most were so busy we didn't get very many pictures in costume before and during the burn. Please share your photos and videos of the event with others. Please E-mail them to me or post them directly to the Shutterfly site. I will make a five minute DVD video/slide show of the burn event for each member.

Peace and arrows,

Apollo

Trojan Warrior Names

Here is a list of all of the historical individuals in the Illiad.  Thanks to Wikepedia.  Pick a stage name.  I am no longer Dave W, but will be shooting my arrow as Paris.

BORG Approval of using Tethered Arrows is Pending

We are awaiting BORG approval of using tethered arrows. We've had questions on archery gear. Once we have BORG approval, I will provide much more info on everything involved in this shoot.

Lesley,

Thanks for the update. Others with a 30# bow had a similar problem. But, Joystick says his 30# bow does the job at 150'. It really depends on your bow's real draw weight and your draw length. Bottom line ... that's why 35# was the recommended minimum pound pull.

problem was weight of arrow alone and a 30 lb bow. with the additional drag from the wire, no way jose.

Lesley,

Can you tell us what the problem was? Perhaps it would help a newbie trying this at home. Thanks.

Ozzie: test with mock up arrow was not positive. Will be an assistant to help other archers during the event. Bummer, but that is what it is.

21 Archers Ready To Shoot!

Greetings, Archers!   Today I sent you the FINAL Ignition Plan.   After conversations with Homer just last night and again this morning, the concept has changed.  Be sure to take notice that our plan is now different from the draft.

I have updated the Ready to Shoot entry.  Congratulations to all of you!  And thank you for your fine efforts in preparation for the shoot.

I had a visit at our home today from Doug Ramsey and his friend Monica.  We took some tethered shots.  And after learning that Monica was a member of the 1986 Olympic archery team for China, I hired her on the spot!

Peace and fire,

Apollo

Tips for Shooting a Tethered Arrow

From Androdameia:  One other point that we archers might want to keep in mind when we're shooting on the tether: everything in the shot setup is backwards.   Instead of aligning the bow to the body and the arrow to the bow, everything must be aligned to the arrow, as the cable is the only thing which cannot be realigned and it is delicate.  One archer was having some difficulty, and kept trying to firmly push the arrow down with her finger onto the arrow rest on her bow, which she was having difficulty handling. This caused the cable to bend a lot, and the arrow kept snapping off the rest. We archers need to bring the bow up to the arrow, and align everything to it and the trajectory of the cable instead of trying to force it in the opposite direction.   She eventually got the shot off, and the arrow hit the target.   Great tip.  Thanks.

Bow box pics

Here is the link to Gary's smugmug album, "bow box."  These are the photos of the box we made to secure our bows and protect them from the heat.  The password is "burntarrows."  Enjoy!  :)

AM

archery equipment storage box

So, Gary and I (mostly Gary) came up with an idea for equipment storage on the playa.  As you know, high heat (such as the inside of a car on a hot day) can warp bow limbs, rendering them unusable.  We're constructing a box which will fit all of our bows, plus the arrows, which is lined with styrofoam insulation and which will have a container for ice to keep it all cool.  It is lidded, and will be kept padlocked until the time to use our equipment.  Just thought I'd forward the idea to y'all, just in case.

Equipment Questions

I am a recent addition to the Archery team and have several questions:

1) What do I need to do to my arrows to get them set up for tethered flight?

2) I think I can track down flu flu arrows, but what length should I order, what type of tip should I get and what do I need to buy to make the flammable part of the arrow?

3) I can get a 58" long bow with a 40 lb pull pretty cheap.  Will this do the trick?

flu flus

any ideas as to where i can get flu flu arrows longer than 34"?  i MIGHT be able to get by with those, but i'd really rather have 35" arrows. also, what would be the best way to attach the wire guides to the arrows?
