About the Panevezys District Research Group

The Panevezys Research Group is a project of LitvakSIG. The group obtains records from all shtetls (towns) in the Panevezys Uyezd (district) of Kaunas Gubernia (region) of Lithuania. This includes the town of Panevezys itself as well as records that pertain to the entire Uyezd. We acquire copies of records, translate and database them, and distribute the data.

We are researching our ancestors who may have come from any shtetl in Panevezys Uyezd and have joined together to make the most of our shared resources. Since many of our ancestors lived in one place but worked, were officially registered, or had relatives in another place nearby, it is only by researching on the broader geographic scale of the uyezd that one can be sure where a family was really "from" and that one has searched thoroughly.

We do NOT do private research for individuals.

Our Sources

We have primarily focused on obtaining records from the Kaunas Regional Archives (KRA) and the Lithuanian Archives in Vilnius (LVIA). We are constantly trying to identify records at other repositories.

Access to our DATA

Our group's data is available in Excel format. The spreadsheet allows the researcher to carry out various data sorts which are a useful tool in identifying family members. Our group data is not made publicly available in the LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database (ALD) for at least 18 months after translation.

Our History

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union , an immense and previously inaccessible body of Jewish genealogical records from the 19th and early 20th centuries has become available. LitvakSIG, a non profit 501c corporation, has spent a number of years establishing working relationships with the people who operate the Lithuanian archives. Through the efforts of its’ dedicated volunteer staff, LitvakSig with the cooperation of the Lithuanian Archives, has complied an extensive catalogue of the archive’s holdings.

The Panevezys Research Group began in May 1997. It is a cooperative effort to obtain Jewish records from the district of Panevezys which is in north central Lithuania. In the years of its’ existence, this group has acquire translations of over 60,000 records but there is still a great deal more to be done. All this data can be found on the data page of this site.
