Welcome to the Leyte Orphan project

Three years ago, in February 17, 1006, a massive landslide burried a whole community of over 2000 people, killing most of the residents with in minutes, including entire grade school students. The last building not touched by the mudslide was a high school building accross the river. The students were having classes when the tragedy happened. We took 16 of those survivors with us to Sunrise Christian College and provided them their daily needs, including education. BandS MinistriesOwen Foundation provided most of the funds for the food and education. Individual donors and churches provided the rest. constructed a building for the boys and another building for the girls.

I brought them paper beads from Africa one day. I told them to create similar beads and let their imagination go wild and left the country. Two months later, when I came back I discovered that they have made inovation in paper bead making that is probably never seen before.

Leyte orphans in Siargao Medical Mission

The Leyte  orphans served in many capacities during the recent Caris/BandS Medical MissionDr. Sam Cariaga treated many survivors including their relatives. It is encouraging and inspiring to see these young people today "stand on the giving side of the human need." in Siargao last Januar 8-10, 2009. They helped with the registration and organization. They helped teach livelihood programs like goat raising, bead making, and soap making. One of the early exposure they had with me and our organization is through medical mission immediately after the Guinsaugon disaster.

Goat Raising and Medical Mission

The poorest of the poor go to the medical mission for free medical services. It is a temporary solution to a serious economic problem. In Siargao mission, we added the livelihood element to our program and taught goat raising, bead and soap making. If their income improves, they may not have to wait for a medical mission to get the health services that they need.

The Leyte orphans have been undergoing training in Cebu for two summers on goat raising. In Siargao, Martel Berdijo was able to help teach the people there how to raise goats. We brought hybrid goats of Boer and Nubian breed. Gemma Cabarles and Janice Demayo of Arapal Goat Farm also assisted. Elmas Monsing taught soap making using goat milk soap.

Goat raising can help alleviate poverty. The goats milk can provide much needed calcium and protein for the poor. Goat manure can provide free fertilzer for their garden. If they add earthworms to this process, the earthworms eat decomposed goat manure and rotten leaves and secrete an even richer organic fertilizer. They can make money on both the fertilizer and the earthworms called African Nightcrawler.

The poor do not have to be poor. And we do not have to watch them suffer. We all can do something to improve our world. If you want to know more or would like to help in anyway, please email me at cariaga@yahoo.com or cal 817 480 1287.
