Stay Fit! Have Fun! Get Wet!
Coach Mike
UPCOMING ITEMS AND EVENTS
Marvelous Masters:
1. Stay Fit! Have Fun! Get Wet! is our motto and mantra, and I want to encourage you all to stay with your swimming during this quieter and more weather challenging time. The water temp is a perfect 80 degrees, and it will stay that way all during the fall and winter months. Great temp to work out, while the sprint from and to the HOT TUB and LOCKER ROOM STEAM AND SAUNA is a very short distance. Peninsula Community Center offers each of you a very nice venue in which to stay fit, and our Masters Community is alive and vibrant. Thanks to all of you for making it special.
2. Saturday, October 31, we will be having our Last Saturday Social in the lobby of the club, so plan on being here for one of the three workouts. Food, fun, and frivolity will be shared after all the workouts. Also, Teacher Tom will be providing his MONTHLY CLINIC at 8:30, and he will be sending out a survey to determine what his focus will be. Please respond to his survey, and let him know which topic is of most importance to you. Tom is an excellent instructor and imparts his vast knowledge of all phases of aquatics extremely well. We are blessed to have him as a part of our community.
3. Triple Crown 2010 is right around the corner. The days and dates for each of the swims are Thursday, November 26th, Thanksgiving Day, Saturday, December 19th, the Saturday before Christmas; Friday, January 1st, News Years Day. Each swim consists of 100’s Freestyle, and there are three levels in which to participate. A sign- up sheet and flyer on the event is located in the literature rack at the Masters Bulletin Board. There is a fee and a very attractive garment of clothing for your participation. This is a very fun and personally challenging event, so I expect all to get involved. If you are out of town on any of those days, make up swims will be arranged.
4. Mike will be on vacation from November 16th to November 23rd. He and lovely Marilyn will be traveling to Mexico, Puerto Vallarta specifically. Sun, beach, and umbrella drinks await their arrival.
While Mike is away, a variety of usual suspects, assistant coaches, will be on deck to run you through your paces. Be kind to them, and do what they ask of you.
Speaking of assistant coaches, if you have ever thought about being a part of the coaching team, please let me know. I am always looking for more talent on the deck, and it only takes a willingness on your part to be involved. There are many among you that would make excellent coaches, so give it some serious thought. Thank you.
5. Congratulations are in order for Bob Anderson, one of our own, who single handedly represented our PCAM Team at the Pacific Masters Swimming Short Course Championships last weekend. Bob swam in seven events over the three days, and did quite well in all events. Our PCA Masters Team came in 34th out of 43 teams competing, thanks to Bob’s efforts. Bob has had a great year in competition in a variety of venues, and is a fine ambassador for PCA Masters, not to mention a great organizer and motivator. Thanks Bob, for all your contributions to PCA Masters. Nice Job!!!
6. A reminder to all, if you have not been on our website,
www.pcamasters.com , you are missing out on some fantastic slide shows. Josh Lee put together three shows recently that are quite priceless, so I encourage all to check them out. There are many other photos of past events as well, so some of you new folks, spend a little time and check out your new friends.
Thanks for all your support and participation, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
A FEW FAST FEMALES ALSO FEELING FINE
Marv Masters:
I realize I just sent a previous communication regarding one female, but there are a couple more that need some kudos.
Jeanette Mucha, another marvelous master and mother of two, completed her first Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon in Kona along with Harriet, and had for herself a great time and turned in a great time.
Jeanette has done a number of Ironman events in the past, with her goal being to qualify for the race she just completed. As many of you know, to qualify for Kona is extremely difficult, and with kids and a job, and a husband, how does one find the time? She is a very gifted athlete as well, and comes in a compact package that packs a huge amount of energy. Her focus and tenacity and training regimen is very intense, and all that effort paid off well this year.
Congratulations, Jeanette Mucha, for realizing your goal and completing one challenging event.
Kristine Buckley, who swims more than she eats or breathes I think, completed the 2009 Open Water Points Competition of Pacific Masters Swimming with a solid third place finish. Kristine takes her swimming seriously, and gives everything she’s got during these events to finish as close to the top as she can. Points are earned during designated Lake Swims and Ocean Swims, and Kristine excels at both.
She also has a love affair with the San Francisco Bay, and can be found often with the South End Rowing Club going back and forth between Alcatraz and Aquatic Cove on a regular basis. I am not sure if she has a number of crossings in mind, but I believe it is just one more, for the rest of her life.
Congratulations, Kristine Buckley, for setting high standards for yourself in swimming and in life. Nice job!!!
Stay fit! Have fun! Get wet!

Kona
Marvelous Masters:
The following was a message from Harriet Anderson to me last Sunday, after she completed the Ironman Triathlon in Kona Hawaii for I believe her 17th time. She is an incredible human specimen who began her triathlon career at the young age of 58 years old. She did her first one as a bit of a lark, and won her age group in the process. She qualified for Kona early in her career, and has been as part of The Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii for almost two decades.
As you read her account of this years event, one can only imagine how difficult it was for her to continue, and the fortitude it required to press on to her goal of finishing. The Hawaiian Ironman often focuses on people who have significant challenges in their lives, and how they manage to overcome those challenges and succeed in completing their goals. I would venture to say that this years event tested Harriet the most significantly of any other, and her finishing must have been very satisfying, and I would venture to say quite emotional.
She is resting up and taking it easy on the beach, still in Hawaii, and will resume her regular activities next week at the club on her return. I look forward to seeing her, and getting further reports of her triumph.
See you all at the pool, and don’t let a little rain put a damper on your workouts!!!!

Subject: Re: Kona
Dear Mike,
You may be wondering why my time was so slow this year.
I had a good swim and I was having a good bike ride until about the 80 mile mark. Someone passed me and cipped my bike and I went down hard on my left side. I knew I was injured but I know Tour de France riders continue after falls when they have injuries. I completed the bike course and I had a first aid person put a band around my arm and shoulder. I had to walk the whole marathon because I was so sore. I completed the marathon before midnight. I was so excited to have completed the race. I went to the medical tent after the race. The doctors said I either had a fractured clavicle or fractured shoulder. They sent me to the hospital for x-rays. Thank goodness I only have a fractured clavicle and a possible cracked rib. The radiologist will read the x-rays on Monday. Maybe I can still do spinning class. Tonight is the Award Banquet and I am the oldest female finisher in three years in a row.
I will see you in a week.
Harriet
THIS WEEKEND
Marvelous Masters!!
The last weekend of the month is here, and the usual is happening.
Teacher Tom will be conducting his clinic at the 8:30am Saturday Workout, focusing on Walls and Turns. He will begin promptly at 8:30, and will start in the deep end, and then move into the lanes.
Josh Lee will be on deck at the 8:30 workout to run you through your paces.
Tom will be on deck at the 6am and 715am workouts, and then will move to the clinic at 830am.
The bagels and bonding in the lobby will be happening after each workout, so plan on some extra time, and stop and visit with each other.
My wife and I will be spending the weekend in the Monterey Bay area, doing some R&R. Thank you to Tues/Thurs AM swimmers, as we will be joining African animals on Saturday and Sunday doing a Safari night under the stars. Should be quite interesting.
I will be sending out another update soon, as more is on the agenda.
Have a great weekend, and see you all soon.
Keep up the great work.
Coach Mike
WEEKEND TO REMEMBER, UPCOMING EVENTS
Marvelous Masters:
Saturday, the 12th of September, in the year 2009, Redwood City, California, four o’clock in the morning, numerous residents along with fifty swimmers were jolted out of their beds by the flash of lightning and boom of thunder to start their day. Alarm clocks were not needed, as Frank Alaimo reminded us at the club, as the Good Lord Almighty provided our wake up call.
Thus began our journey to the Alcatraz Invitational in San Francisco. We gathered at the club and departed on time at 5:15am, everyone on time and ready. Lightning and thunder continued as we all rode up the highway to SF, wondering aloud and I am certain privately, “What in the world am I getting myself into this time”?

We arrived at the South End Rowing Club in plenty of time, and the weather looked like the race may or may not be conducted. A heavy fog engulfed the entire area, with a light rain and mist dampening all but our spirits. The parking was non-existent, so we dropped everyone off, and they proceeded to registration. Registration was occurring normally, and talk of the race not happening was not even considered, so far as anyone thought.
The weather improved, all the swimmers were marked and ready, necessary announcements were done, and the bag-piper began
blowing his pipes. The procession of swimmers, family, friends, media, tourists, and street people began their parade down Jefferson Street toward the ferry terminal to board the boat that was to take the brave souls out to the rock. Confidence and a sense of devil may care attitude prevailed, and everyone stepped lively and gingerly on the wet pavement. Much joking, laughter, and a jab or two were present throughout.
The boat was boarded, the bay was somewhat calm, and the lightning and thunder had subsided for our short ride to the East end of Alcatraz. The horn sounded, and three by three, from both sides of the boat, swimmers jumped and yelped into the icy water, and the race to the shore was on. All who jumped from the boat, made it to shore, everyone under their own power and not needing assistance from anything or anybody. I know for a fact, because I saw and heard, lightning struck and thunder rolled during our swim, about 25 minutes into it, but what could you do from the middle of the bay???!!!
Marvelous, fantastic, and downright fast swims were the order of the day, as many PCA Masters put on quite a show for others to witness and envy. You may observe all of the times and age group placements at the club, and all are posted on the bulletin board to see.
Congratulations to everyone, and especially to the “first timers”, who put their demons aside, and went for the gusto and conquered.
It was great to see everyone thrive with a challenging day, and whatever the future holds, we can be assured of our finishers medal.
On Sunday, September 13th, there were two swims in which to participate.
The RCP Tiburon Mile was held, which swam from Angel Island to Tiburon, a bay swim of about one mile.
Also, the Whiskeytown One and Two Mile swims took place near Redding. This was a PMS Sanctioned event.
Alexa Strutner, Kai Neuhold-Huber, Michelle Glaubert, Denise Carr, and Kristine Buckley all swam in one of the above events, Michelle and Denise doing back to back swims on Sat & Sun. Nice going Kai and ladies for fine performances.
It was quite a weekend of activity for PCA Masters swimmers. Everyone had trained well for their swims and the results were predictable. Nice job people!!!!
UPCOMING EVENTS
September 26 Lake Natoma Open Water ½ Mile, 1 Mile Folsom
October 3 Swim Across America Bay Swim 1.5 Mile SF Bay San Francisco
October 4 Alan Liu Memorial Swim Meet Various events Mt View
October 16,17,18 Pacific Masters Championships Various events Walnut Creek
The Lake Natoma Open Water swim is the last open water swim this year that counts towards the open water points total. Some of you have been swimming in numerous events this year, and accumulating points toward that end. If enough swimmers would like to go, I will provide a van and ride up there that day with you. Please advise if this is desirable.
Swim Across America Bay Swim is another fundraiser for cancer research. It is separate from our SAA Pool Swim we are conducting the entire month of September, but supports the same cause. Information may be found at their website.
Our focus will shift to the pool, for the above meets, in which I would like to see significant interest.
Meet sheets and information on the above swims will be found in the literature rack at the club.
ONGOING EVENT
Swim Across America continues the entire month of September, so keep swimming as much and as often as you are able, and post your meters on the boards on the wall. New York, New York is our goal, and to the tip of Long Island to be specific. Thanks for making a difference. A tax deductible donation of $25 is requested from each swimmer, or an amount of your choice is perfectly fine.
Make all checks payable to Swim Across America and turn in to the front desk here at the club.
UPCOMING SOCIAL EVENT AND GATHERINGS
On occasion, you may hear some Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban at the pool during our workouts, and I am a fan of both these singers and numerous more.
On September 19th at 8PM, at ATT Park in San Francisco, there will be a live Simulcast, FREE, of Giuseppe Verdi’s
Il Trovatore Opera. This will be conducted by the San Francisco Opera Company and the SF Giants, and you may find info on this event in the literature rack at the club.
I would like to know if anyone else would like to go, take the train to SF, enjoy the outdoor seating at ATT Park, enjoy the scenery and opera, and return via train to Redwood City. This event will run from 8pm to 11pm, and the weather forcast is warm and balmy for this Friday night. It should be fun, and a different thing to do. Concessions such as garlic fries, hot dogs, etc will be on sale during the event.
On line entries need to take place, so pick up the info at the club, enter online for free admission, and let me know. Thanks.
On another social note, there is a Masters Party in the works to gather and celebrate our various achievements in recent months. This would include Trans Tahoe and Alcatraz swimmers, and anyone else who wants to join the party.
It would be held near the club at the home of one of our swimmers, a very nice venue for such an event. The timeframe would be 4pm to 8pm or thereabouts, and would be an adult only gathering.
Please respond to this email of your availability and desire to attend a gathering of this sort, and we will pick a date. Probably a Saturday or Sunday would work the best.
It is a sincere pleasure to be a part of such a fine group of people that comprise PCA Masters. We are definitely
Staying Fit!! Having Fun!! Getting wet!!
See you all at the pool,
Coach Mike
3 Drills for Open Water Swimming | Active.com and Other Topics of Interest
Marvelous Masters:
Thanks to Ken Wisner for these tips.
They may not apply to all, but are good things to consider when in open water, as much of us are.
As I write this, there are 31 swimmers in the water for the Friday Noon workout, an awesome number, and a beautiful day. Please extend a hearty “Thank You” to coach Rachel Yarranton, Friday Noon Coach and very fine swimmer for the job she does, and the enthusiasm she brings.
Remember to post your meters each day you swim, and if in the bay or in other bodies of water, post those swims as well. This month I am determined to get in the water each day myself, and I encourage each and every one to do the same. Alcatraz Invitational is Sep 12, and 50 of us will take the plunge. There are also many other open water swims coming up, as well as a few meets to consider. Check the Masters Bulletin Board for updates and info.
I am determined, along with all of your greatness and commitment, to reach the end of Long Island by month’s end. Swim Across America, baby!!!!! Go for it!!
Have yourselves a great holiday weekend. See you all very soon.

SWIM ACROSS AMERICA CANCER FUNDRAISER IN SEPTEMBER
As we did last year, we will be attempting to Swim Across America for Cancer Research and two hospitals in the bay area. I will be providing more details in a separate notice, and a tote board will be posted at the club to track your miles.
This community center wide effort is intended to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease that has virtually affected all of us in some way or another.
More details to follow very soon.
That’s all for now. See you all very soon. I am honored at being your coach.

Various Items of Interest
Marvelous Masters:
As summer is coming to a close, vacations are taken, kids getting ready to go back to school, and the Community Center is slowing it’s pace from the hectic summer months, PCA Masters is still in full swing and thriving as never before. There are a number of opportunities in which to be involved, and I welcome you all to give some of them a try.
1. SWIM ACROSS AMERICA CANCER FUNDRAISER
As in the previous September, all masters swimmers as well as all of our community center members are invited to sign up and raise money and awareness for this disease that affects so many of us. Information is found in the literature rack by the masters bulletin board, and the tote board that will track our progress will be prominently displayed before the end of August.
There is also an Open Water Bay Swim on October 3rd, that’s begins under the Golden Gate Bridge and finishes at Crissy Field in San Francisco.
More information may be found at
www.swimacrossamerica.org .
2. OPEN WATER OPPORTUNITIES COMING UP

September 26 TI2Y 1.5 Mile Bay Swim Parallels Bay Bridge Fundraiser for SF YMCA
September 26 Lake Natoma Cold Water Challenge ½ and 1 Mile
October 3 Swim Across America 1.5 Mile Bay Swim
3. POOL EVENTS AND MEETS
I have noticed among the many workouts that are offered each week, that the level of fitness, technique and speed of all the swimmers have increased quite nicely, in all lanes across the pool. In each lane, the swimmers have challenged and encouraged each other to new levels. I have mentioned that it would be FUN and CHALLENGING to focus on a few of the swim meets left in the year, and put together a concerted effort to attend.
There are three meets left, one in Mountain View, Walnut Creek, and Reno.
October 4th, Sunday, is the Alan Liu Memorial Short Course Meters Meet. It is very well run and a good first timer meet for the inexperienced.
October 16,17,18, Fri,Sat,Sun is the Pacific Masters Short Course Meters Championships.
December 5, Saturday is the Reno Winners Meet, Short Course Yards
Many of you have attended meets recently, but many of you have not. Just as in the Open Water venues, our team make up and strength is at a high level now, and our skill level is very good also. Swim meets are a great way to measure ourselves in competition and also a way to focus our training and workouts on specific events. Please consider joining us for one or all of the above events.
Please respond if you have an interest to the above, and I hope many of you will. I will start to put together the necessary registration materials.
4. WEBSITE ADDITIONS AND PICTURES
Thank you , Josh Lee, for continuing to add and expand our PCA Masters website. In a recent workout, Bob Anderson asked me to take a video of him swimming so he could view it after and get useful info on his stroke, turns, and other technique issues. I took it a bit further, and took pictures of all the the Wednesday PM Masters workout, which was very well attended. Bob provided Josh the disc, Josh put it on the web, and now all can view the workout video and check out their strokes for themselves. Thank you Josh and Bob.
It is a great tool for us to use, and we will expand on this in the future. I have an underwater casing for my camera, and we did an experiment about a year ago using it, and I will bring it out again to see if it could be useful for analyzing our strokes underwater.
Please check out all the other features on our
www.pcamasters.com website as well. We continue to add to it regularly, there are many items of interest, and there are some great and classic photos of all of us. What a fantastic group we are!!!!! Just Marvelous!!
5. ALCRATAZ PRACTICE SWIMS, THREE MORE SUNDAYS
There are three more Sundays we will be traveling to Aquatic Park in San Francisco, 8/23, 8/30, 9/6. As always, we meet at the club at 6:45am, load the two vans which can hold 10 each, including driver, and then proceed to SF Aquatic Park. We are in the water about 8am, swim about an hour or more, get coffee, and return to the club 10:15 to 10:30. It is possible we will do breakfast on the last Sunday, 9/6. If that sounds good, let me know.
If you have been on previous swims or you are new, please advise me of your attendance. It is helpful to get a head count before Sunday, but someone can drive if we have overflow. First come, first serve. That also applies to this email. Thanks.
That is all for now. Thank you each and every one for your participation. I look forward to seeing each of you at your next workout.
Remember, Stay Fit, Have Fun, Get Wet.
You guys rock,
Coach Mike
Weekly Update from Mike Lynch
Marvelous Masters: Items of Interest and Importance Follow:
1. As the weather warms up on the Peninsula, so does our pool. Many of you are aware of our unique circumstance here at PCC, very efficient use of resources, but not too comfortable to swimmers who may want to work out vigorously. As the weather returns to normal patterns, so does the pool temperature. Please use your head when working out in warmer water, and proceed with common sense. The workouts offered during this time take the pool temperature into consideration. Pace yourself and don’t over exert. Thanks.
2. I recently sent out an article on Harriet Anderson, from Ironman USA, congratulating her on her commitment to that event over a 20 year span. She trains very smartly and methodically, and has a long career of accomplishment of which to be proud.
Also in our midst, there are a few individuals who participate in other sports and disciplines that are not mainstream by any means, and do not receive much publicity, if any.
I have recently been informed of the success of Alan Eagleton, who has been participating in numerous Archery Competitions lately, and has been very successful. Alan took a trip back east to a National Event a couple of weeks ago, and walked away with First Place in his division, and set a new record for the event. Alan has made a concerted effort to get himself in great shape in the pool and in the other classes offered here at the center, and it certainly is paying off. Archery is an Olympic Event, and Alan definitely has what it takes to represent the US in the Olympics.
Another swimmer and long time member, Dennis Haussler, has been a leader and participant in the sport of Free Dive Spear Fishing, and has been successful over the years of being the best among this select group. Divers are required to stay underwater for long periods of time holding their breath, waiting for fish to come into range. He recently went to Malibu, and walked away with a First Place trophy for his efforts. He did not expect to do that well, but with his family close by on the trip with him, he was motivated to succeed.
Kristine Buckley, a regular here at the center the last couple of years, starting in the pool but also participating in other classes, has a long list of Open Water Accomplishments to her credit. She spends more time in the water than on land, and it suits her well. She set for herself a goal to swim as many Alcatraz Crossings as she can, and just completed her 400th this week, and continues to swim the chilly bay waters regularly. She is member of the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco, who conducts the Alcatraz Invitational each year, in which many of us participate.
Congratulations to everyone for your commitment to fitness and your commitment to excellence in your chosen pursuits. It’s great to have you here.
3. Various Open Water Swim opportunities were mentioned in my last update, but I failed to mention one that is coming up. There is a bay swim from Treasure Island to San Francisco called T I 2 Y, which starts at Treasure Island and finishes at the Embarcadero YMCA in SF. It will be held on September 26, 8am, and entry fee is now $95. You may register at
www.active.com . This swim is 1.5 mile and parallels the Bay Bridge. The swim is not a Pacific Masters Sanctioned Swim, but is well run, and very similar to the Alcatraz swims in the bay.
4. In September, Swim Across America, the cancer fundraiser we had last year, will again be a focus of our swimming activity as we challenge each other in our masters community as well as our lap swim and general swimming community here at the center to swim from coast to coast. Last year we made it to just beyond Cleveland, Ohio and this year my goal is the tip of Long Island, New York. We will have a map on the wall and a chart to post your meters daily. Look for more details of this event as September approaches.
5. The next four Sundays we will continue to swim in the bay at Aquatic Park in San Francisco. These swims are in preparation for the Bay Swims which are coming up. Meet at the club at 645am, depart at 7am to SF, in the bay waters about 8am, swim one hour plus, get dressed, do coffee, and return to PCC around 10:15 – 10:30. As the attendees may desire, we also may do a breakfast after the swim. I will poll the group and advise. We had two vans last Sunday, about 18 people total, so advise Mike via email of your desire to be included.
The summer is coming to a close shortly, school has started for some, but the Community Center will continue to rock until Labor Day. Events such as Watermelon Wednesday, Hot Doggest Nights, and the new PCC Pentathlon will continue, so look for the dates, and get involved.
It is great to have all of you a part of this thriving community, and I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the near future.
Remember, STAY FIT! HAVE FUN! GET WET!
