Peak-Pics - 973 - Bonanza Peak, July 1-3, 2009

This is a peak I have wanted to get for many years, and I have now finally made it!

Greg Slayden of Peakbagger.com organized this trip several months ago and the timing ended up just perfect for weather and also for having no other parties climbing on our summit day. Also on the trip was Adam Helman (cohp.org) and Dennis Poulin of Oregon highpointing fame.

We did the trip in 3 days; one day to take the boat and bus to Holden Village & hike to Holden Pass. Day 2 was the summit day, we carefully and slowly climbed this monster of a peak over glacier and steep rock which was mostly quite solid and enjoyable. The final airy ridge was the best as we had views all around of great peaks of the Cascade Range. We took an hour break and then a combination of downclimbing and 3 rappels brought us to the glacier. The worst part was the waterfall area where we had a slimey rappel to sloping slabs.

Day 3 brought us back and I went on to meet Annette and friends in Mazama.

This was an excellent climb with a great group of guys!
