Puerto Peñasco (also known as Rocky Point) is just 60 miles southwest of the border with . The town was founded in 1930 as a fisherman’s village. Today, the city is a beautiful tourist destination while retaining the feel of an old fishing port.

This seaside town is where the meets the . Desert sand dunes scattered with ocotillo, cholla cactus and desert grasses merge with the sand on the seashore of Old Mexico.

Rusty shrimp trawlers anchor in the shallows, drying their nets in the sun while children play in the tide pools, beachcombers meander on the shore and vendors scour the beach for customers. From under the shade of a palapa, you may gaze at pelicans skimming across the water or sight dolphins in the distant water.

The aquamarine water in hues of blues and green invite swimmers, boaters, sailors and all water lovers to frolic in the warm waters. These waters are home to one of the richest marine environments on the planet! Therefore, Puerto Peñasco is also a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts. 

Puerto Peñasco is just an hour’s drive across the border, making it an ideal destination from , , and southern . From the International airport in , it is just a 4 hour drive and several car rental companies allow vehicles to be driven into .

Prior to the border, you pass through the which has an intriguing and unique desert beauty all its own. The Lukeville/Sonoita border crossing is small and easy to traverse. Sonoita itself is not intimidating and before long you are on the “hassle-free zone” highway . . . on your way to the !

Puerto Peñasco offers accommodations for every budget from camping on the beach to high-rise condo resorts. This is a safe and friendly beach town. It’s a great place for summer vacations. Or, the snowbird’s sun-drenched winter retreat.

There are Mexican handcrafts for sale, a small aquarium, lots of restaurants and fun bars overlooking the . Dozens of local vendors offer ATV & Rhino rentals, jet ski rentals, parasailing, kayaking, ultra light rides, sunset cruises, fishing trips and fantastic eco-tours.

Very cool site........the first/top pic.......I have seen this before - but the shot is taken from a beach.......is the pic photo-shopped to do that for that view of Old Port? Great job!
