First time at the Beach
We just moved to Washington state & this was our munchkin's first time getting her hands dirty at a "beach" since she was 2 months old (at which time she didn't play in the sand much). She had a blast!

The photo needs a bit of explaining. I was watching as the light shone on this beautiful bunch of ferns that overlooked the water. Then I realized that there were puffs of smoke coming from them. Amazingly enough, because of the direct sun rays, you could see the ferns' sporangium going thru their spore dispersal phase. AMAZING! I've seen the sporangium before, but never a fern letting them go! The specks of long lines around the center of the photo & down near the bottom are those spores that were released & will someday (with help from nature) possibly become new ferns!
This is a closer up of the last photo. Fern spores in action!

iHeart Faces Photo Challenge - Best Face 2011
I entered my sweet little munchkin for the iHeart Faces Best Face of 2011. She's such a giggly happy little girl so when I sat her down in a field of cat tails & encouraged her to "tickle the camera" she did just that! She thought it was so great that she could reach me from far away & the DOF turned out perfectly!
I'm really excited to get my feet wet here in Washington. I love that there are kind & happy people here & TONS of locations around the area to take photos. I've started putting my foot out there a bit & trying to get a photo session here or there. Looking forward to a mid-November maternity session & anything else that comes my way. In the meantime there is plenty to see & do here in the suburbs of Seattle. From forests to fields, barns & bands... I'm having a really great time exploring!
Time sure flies when you're having fun! Or in my case, when your life is changing. In late August we transplanted our family to the beautiful city of Olympia, WA. It was a change for better employment & weather sanity. The heat of AZ was just too much & my husband's job wasn't cutting it. We're now happily settled in Washington & looking forward to planting our roots & finding all the great hiding spots!
Crazy Busy (or is that Beautiful)
April was just incredibly busy! It most certainly ended on a high note as we had a visitor from California. I think that I took more photos in April than I had all 3 months previous! It was fun & exhausting all at the same time. Picnics, Sunsets, Weddings, Graffiti, The Grand Canyon, Photo shoots & that's all in my free time. :-) Here's to more busy months filled with Beautiful photos!
What a perfect weekend it's been for photography! I have spent much of the weekend out & about, exploring this beautiful city I live in. What fun it's been to find new places & photograph new things. I hope you enjoy my newest additions to the website.
Far too long
Sorry everyone, I know it's been way too long since I've uploaded & entered into my website. Life has absolutely taken over, but that's no excuse. I've been a photo taking fool of late & have so many to edit but some of the ones I'm most excited about, I've taken this week. Please stay tuned for photos from "Native Trails" as well as some beautiful Sedona photos & Amococo.
Adding to the list, I have the opportunity, tomorrow morning to photograph a beautiful family. I met them while visiting the Scottsdale Center for the Arts "Native Trails" performance. We'll be heading back to the same location to capture some beautiful family portraits! I'm so excited to photograph this lovely family of 3 & can't wait to share them with you!
Who knew I would be so busy during the holiday season. I got a last minute phone call from a mommy-to-be named Megan. She's a friend of my SIL & a previous client, Amy. She called to see if I would be available for photos before the holidays. I gave her 1 option. She was available, so was I - the result: FABULOUS photos at Papago Park. If ever anyone wants to take photos there... Call me!!! What a beautiful location, beautiful weather & a beautiful family! I can't wait to show you these photos!
So this morning I just got an email for a new meetup group that has been started for photographers of any kind to join & submit photos for critique. It will have monthly themes & such. I'd love to get input from any of you out there that read this about ideas for their themes. I look forward to participating in as many of these as possible & cant wait to broaden & hone my photography skills! Hooray for meetups that don't actually meet up!
I absolutely love the holidays. I feel so happy wandering around looking at all the holiday lights hung on houses & in front yards. Yesterday we visited the Mesa temple to see their lights display. Beautiful! We've had a guest this weekend & today we had an impromptu photo session in Scottsdale. So pretty!
It seems like finding the time to edit while I've got a full time job is difficult. I find that if I get too distracted with other things going on around me while I'm editing, I loose focus & drive. Today I sat down & really nailed down a good set of images from the Trotter's Wake Photoshoot. In the beginning when I first looked at them I was super excited, now... I'm just really hoping the group likes the images that I was able to capture. I found that I have much fewer GREAT images than I thought. While I still have (after deletion) 75 images, I hope that they are ones that when completely edited will be WOW photos! I think these next two days will be filled with edit edit edit of a Great Irish Band!
I've uploaded a sneak peek at the Trotter's Wake photos... Despite it's slight blurriness, I really feel that it captures the feel of this band. So joyful, so full of fun energy.
It's seemed like forever & in reality it's only been 3 weeks but I finally finished the model photos!!! WooHoo!!! I'll be posting a few more asap. Now I'm on to editing the band photos & the surprise photos. Edit Edit Edit... that should be my middle name.
What a Weekend
I always seem to do this to myself, but since we've been living in AZ, I have managed to keep it to a minimum. I really like being out & about but always seem to -over book- myself. I didn't to it too terribly this weekend, but I definitely didn't manage my time very well. I didn't give myself enough sleep, enough work time & enough time with my family. OH well. It's over now.
On to the exciting stuff. Last night I had my "surprise" session with Amy. I got part way to her house for our session when I realized I had left my battery at home. Yikes! I wasn't too far so it wasn't too horrible to run home & get it & head back. Of course, this made me late but she was very understanding. I was using a new lense that I borrowed from my mom & we had a very low light situation... all new & exciting experiences. All in all, I think I'm learning how to handle my camera better in lower light situations.
This evening I had my first "gig" shoot. I was very excited, but VERY nervous about this session. I'm thankful that my first try was with people I've known for a very long time & they were laid back & flexible. On the way to the shoot, (as I'm approaching my exit on the freeway -less than 5 minutes away-) I realized I left my battery. I know, AGAIN! *sigh* SO I turn around, frantically call the lead singer & explain my reasons for being late, then call my mom & start crying. 2 days in a row! I'm an idiot. But as I explained before, they'r'e very forgiving & laid back. I was only 10 minutes late for their start time but 40 minutes late for our scheduled photo start.
The gig session went REALLY well. I branched out & did things I've never done: Low light action photography, photos with a monopod, photos in a bar and videography. Now, I'd try it all again but videography isn't something I will ever be proud of! :).
All in all, a very busy but exciting weekend.
Lesson learned, buy a battery & keep a spare charged in my photo bag.
Until next time!
What an incredibly hard couple weeks this has been. Shortly after my amazing model shoot, My hard drive crashed. This wouldn't have been so bad if I had backed up my photos before getting so engulfed in editing. Well I didnt, and for the last 2 weeks I've paid for it. After trying 2 photo recovery softwares to recover the images from my cards (which I thankfully hadn't used), I was able to recover 99% of the images. Editing them all over again has been painful but I'm' thankful I have them to edit. From now on, I'll run 3-4 backups! FOREVER! Promise!
Next week will be exciting. I have 2 sessions over the weekend. The first will be a secret session with my previous engagement session, female only this time. The second is a band/gig session, my first... I'm excited and scared at the same.
You know, I've never though that I could be a -professional- photographer. Yesterday I had the chance to photograph a young lady who has recently signed with a modeling agency. She contacted me to help her develop some photos for a portfolio. I was nervous but SO excited about this opportunity.
I've known her for quite some time but she's changed drastically in the 7 years since I've seen her last. We had a great time, took longer than we should have & got some INCREDIBLE images. She has such a great variety of expression, attitude & posture.
I have to say, after this shoot, that it's possible that my new favorite subjects are... MODELS!!! (I know everyone can be considered a model when posing for a photo but I mean model in the literal sense.) After such an incredible session & easy editing, I really do think I can do this whole -professional- thing.
After having such a wonderful session with Amy & Tech, I've decided to start an incentive program.
Details: For each session an existing client refers, they will receive $10 off their next session. The person they have referred will receive $5 off their first session. There is no expiration to the $10 off incentive & they can be combined to equal free sessions.
I have decided that when available, I will be adding a little surprise to the delivery of every photo session. I think it's a nice way to say... Thank you for choosing me as your photographer!
This evening I'll be delivering my first photo session by hand. I'm so excited to see the look on the bride-to-bes face when she looks at her beautiful images and her unknown surprises!
Since working at a photo studio for nearly a year and a half, I'd not call myself a "professional photographer" in the literal sense. I'm more of a professional wannabe. I spent the 3 years following my employment at the studio, working with an incredibly talented photographer & dear friend. I got to be her "pee on". Those were my terms, not hers. I learned SO much from her but still feel almost inadequate when it comes to getting out there & doing my own stuff. Before my move, I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph her engagement portraits. Now that we're living in different states, if I want to continue my passion for photography... I do it alone.
This is where my journey as a photographer begins. Doing "pro bono" jobs, trying to get my name out there. I want to be the photographer who does great work on a small budget for individuals & families on a budget. There are plenty of "pros" out there. I can do just as good as them, with a great attitude, a smile & an affordable price.
My first session here in Arizona was with a really sweet couple. I've known Amy for years & she's now engaged to a wonderful & very funny guy... Tech. Together they're a hoot. So easy going & so much fun to photograph. This session made my "job" seem like child's play! Thanks guys! I can't wait to see what ideas you come up with next!
