It was a simple thing, a chance comment at a cocktail party, followed by a conversation about recent events in the participant’s lives. Annie Bradley, a Canadian Film Centre Director, talked about her recent filming project at Perram House. The second party to the interchange, Kathy Mentier, talked about her experience during the production of a House and Garden’s TV (HGTV) show on “backyard makeovers”.
The outcome of that conversation was the suggestion by Annie that Kathy contact Perram House because their front yard was in serious need of a makeover. Mary Ellen Hopgood, the Executive Duirector of Perram House was then contacted. Concerns that Perram House’s need was for a make over of their front yard while the show up until that point had focused on backyards was quickly set aside and it was suggested that Mary Ellen submit a proposal. Weeks following the submission of the proposal, Perram House was informed that the proposal had been accepted and the project will move forward.
Being a cumbersome project, at times there were concerns that it might not come to fruition. However, Mary Ellen and Sandy Kooblal, Perram House’s Volunteer Coordinator worked diligently with HGTV representatives to clear all obstacles and make this miracle come true. Approval from the city was sought and received. The fact that Perram House is a registered historical building meant that the approval of the Historical Board was needed. After a timely review, having identified only a few changes, their approval was also received.
The work began On Oct 6th and an overnight transformation took place. The front yard of Perram House turned into an amazingly beautiful and functional yard, carefully designed to accommodate its programs. It has grass to walk on surrounded by a box wood hedge with evergreen bushes. There are benches to relax on and enjoy the garden. Flowing tall grasses wave in the breeze while the flowers provide radiant colour. The before and after pictures above show the extent of the alteration.
The view from the street is amazing. Now, first time visitors will be greeted by the reassuring beauty and greenery. The makeover of Perram House will be screened on (TBD) . A video of the make over, featuring Perram Houses Sandy Kooblal, will be viewable on our web site shortly thereafter. Everyone at Perram House extends their gratitude to the HGTV team of Kathy Mentier, David Coulter and Carson Arthur along with their team of technicians and landscapers.
You never know what can happen when one person tells another about Perram House. So spread the word, because you never know what miracle waits around the corner.
