Who we're helping: Schuykill Center for Environmental Education
What we're doing: invasive species removal around an area known as Spring House Pond. This is a small natural pond that flows out from an old spring house. Spring houses are stone structures that are dug into the soil like a basement, built from stone over a spring. The cold water and stone create a cool place used for food storage before refrigeration was invented. This spring house was part of a farm that dates back to the early 1800’s. Winter Photo attached.
Where: We can meet at the main building of the Schuylkill center, 8300 Hagys Mill Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128.www.SchuylkillCenter.org
When: 9/25/10 at 10:00am
Why: Invasive plants can grow aggressively and invade existing ecosystems. To avoid a decline in native plants, invasive species must be removed on a seasonal basis.
