Such a blessing and just the right time for you to, you need to be around loved ones to heal. Pia came back today and that was a happy time, hope Sue and Jenny are lurking and see that we are wanting them back. My youngest son and his family moved back home and got here early yesterday morning and I was busy with them all day. I'm so happy to have them back here...I missed them so much. Miss you all too. Hi everyone!! Wow I have been away for such a long time and it's good to be able to get back to Phoebe's Place. Sorry for the delay in any new posts or pictures, but we have been so busy this summer. We were unfortunate that our beautiful mountains suffered a wild fire in June. We were evacuated for about a week, but luckily our home and property weren't damaged and the fire never got closer then 1/4 mile to us. Several homes and out buildings were lost (about 70) and 5 business. As a result of the fires, when our monsoons came, there was sever flash flooding in the canyons and we live on one of the creeks. Our property has been hit by 11 flash floods during the past 3 months, flooding our entire property twice. Our home was saved by a courtyard wall we had built several years ago due to flooding concerns from normal monsoon flooding and luckily the water got just to the top but didn't come over. We did suffer minor flooding back there due to the 2 gate openings, but thanks to the resourcefulness of my husband, no water entered the house. We lost all our fences and have been busy trying to get the property cleaned up. The monsoons are over, so hopefully no more floods for awhile, although they have told us to expect flooding during the winter and spring and that it will be about 5 years until the mountains have recovered enough for things to get back to normal. I'm looking forward to Phoebe and some babies soon, as I'm sure you all are too!!

Hi Bonny. The male hummingbird only takes part in the mating process. The female builds the nest, incubates the eggs and feeds the babies all by herself. She would run off any male that might come around because she fears his bright colors could draw attention to the nest and babies and possibly put them in danger from predators.

Just a quick update from Phoebes. Phoebe is NOT nesting in the rosebush. The host has observed other hummers removing nesting material. The 29 sightings were all the hummer bandit and NOT Phoebe. I agree we probably won't ever know exactly what happened. But the fact that the nest was a mess while she was "on" it to me indicates something tried to raid the nest. She wouldn't destroy the nest. She probably was still "attached" to the nest. It takes awhile for the bonds to break, which sometimes is good. We had a freak storm blow down an osprey nest. We were ableto rescue two chicks (the third had to be euthanized).After thourough examination by the vet, the next morning we "rebuilt" the nest on the platform and hoisted the two chicks up (not an easy feat with the nest atop a 20 ft Pole) and the adults were still hanging around. They managed to fledge the 2.

I was watching the day it happened. She was moving around a lot, but it was pretty dark still, so couldn't really make out what was going on. Don't imagine that we'll ever know why, but the nest was a mess while she was still on it. Missed her leaving but when I saw it minutes later, the eggs were gone.

I can't believe phoebe would "throw" the eggs out like that. Broken eggs and egg shells attract predators. When eggs hatch the bird generally takes the shells away from the nest site. could a wren have done this? Eggs are high energy cost for a bird. Phoebe is not that young either
