WAY TO GO FIREBIRDS!!!! 1ST PLACE 17s!!!! MLK 2012
At last weekend’s MLK tournament, our Firebirds 171 finished on FIRE with our first VICTORY! Everything came together at the right time. After two days of practicing against 18’s teams at SAC, the girls met at McCollum High School ready for a new day and the start of the real tournament. Because Monday offered a lineup of teams that were in their own age group (17 Nationals) there was already a feeling of optimism circulating amongst the players. Combined with the gnawing hunger for a gold medal on the final day of the tournament, the powerhouse mood for the day was set.
After referring the first match (and studying the competition) the Firebirds took to the court for their three-in-a-row match schedule, sweeping through their first two teams with only minor struggles. In both matches, they pulled out a win in only two games. Flanked by a group of energetic male cheerleaders, they pushed through their final match with KCJ 171 – easily the most challenging match-up of the day. Though they tasted victory in the first game, the second was a blow to the momentum they had built; they were looking at a third game against a team known for their second-game turnaround. After all… KCJ had just defeated the top ranked Austin Performance - En Fuego team by winning the second and third games.
However, in true Firebird spirit, they were able to regain their momentum and then some with awesome attacks and error free play down the stretch, pulling out all the stops and showing everyone what they were capable of. A swift 3rd game victory allowed them to bring home the gold and the glory for the first time in the 2011-2012 season. …And this is only the beginning!!!!!! : ) GO FIREBIRDS!!
