Wanted to inform you of an upcoming meeting between parents and legislators at Marvin Ridge High School.

Please join us for a very important parent-led meeting to discuss the future of education in Union County Public Schools. Four years of budget reductions have already negatively impacted our schools.
Almost $10 Million in ADDITIONAL funding reductions are projected for the next school year.
These cuts would result in:
Reduced teacher positions
Increased class sizes
Further reduction of assistants
Now is the time to dialogue with elected representatives about SOLUTIONS.

Union County Public Schools Budget Outlook for 2012-2013
Poplin Parents,
I would like to direct your attention to the video posted on the UCPS and Poplin websites by Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis. He describes the current state of UCPS and the impending effects that the 2012-13 budget will have on the school year. He discusses a potential $9.9 million shortfall for the 2012-13 school year. I have posted a link under useful PTA Sites (on the right of this page) that will take you directly to his video.
Directly under his Budget video, there is a link called 2012-13 Legislative Priorities and Talking Points. Dr. Ed Davis speaks to ways you can be an advocate for Union County Public Schools by becoming informed and/or writing letters to your legislators.
I will post a document under PTA Meeting Minutes titled "Get Involved" that will list the NC Legislators.

Duke Energy "The Energized Guyz"
The National Theatre for Children visited Poplin last fall with a free production of an energy conservation show, The Energized Guyz. Wwe hope all students enjoyed the show!
You should have received information last fall explaining an extra part of this program:
every family in our school community is entitled to a FREE energy efficiency kit from Duke Energy, available throughout the school year. These kits are worth over $45 dollars and they contain several tools to help you save energy at your home and save up to $200 on your energy bill every year! And you can get them for FREE - Duke even pays for the shipping!
In addition, the school in your state with the most free kit sign-ups will win $1,000! This will be measured by percentage of school enrollment, so all schools are on an even playing field.
Everyone associated with Poplin can participate - administrators, teachers, staff, families, relatives, everyone! Everyone can get a free kit and these sign-ups get your school closer to winning the $1,000 prize!
We want to encourage everyone to continue to sign up for these free kits! You have the whole school year to sign up for kits, so keep spreading the word - pass this information on to your Poplin friends to encourage everyone to sign up! The deadline for this year's contest is June 15, 2012.
