Who is a Community Health Promoter?
Proyecto Salud’s Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are passionate members of the local Latino community who are interested in improving the health of their community. They are dedicated to addressing social factors that affect health by implementing health-related community projects.
As members of minority and underserved populations they are in a position to build on strengths and to address unmet health needs in their communities. CHPs integrate the community's culture, language and value system into their work. With the appropriate resources, training and support, CHPs improve the health of their communities by linking their neighbors to health and social services, educating their peers about disease and injury prevention, working to make available services more accessible and mobilizing their communities to create positive change.
The health promoter model has been used successfully in many countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, as well as in the . A growing body of research supports the role of health promoters to strengthen community networks, provide education and resources and advance access to care.
Proyecto Salud has developed a health promoter model that is rooted in community development, rather than in the medical model or health care system. Through this work CHPs provide leadership, peer education, support, and resources to support community development.
Training for Proyecto Salud’s Community Health Promoters
Our curriculum is designed in Spanish and is developed exclusively for our Milwaukee Latino community. It includes health advocacy, leadership development, mental and physical health, nutrition, exercise, alternative healing, project development and more. We train CHPs to provide one-on-one health education, as well as how to promote a public health message through group activities and health preventative presentations. The success of our model lies in the fact that we have facilitated a long term and consistent group of CHPs.
After the training, Proyecto Salud connects CHPs to mentors and organizations based on mutual interest. Several CHPs from the original class now play a mentor role to the newer class. As CHPs begin to develop their community projects, Proyecto Salud supports them in their process.
Examples of CHP projects
1. Participate in and help coordinate an urban community garden project at Mitchell Park
2. Lead a sexual health program on a local radio station
3. Facilitate Intercambio, a language and culture exchange program
4. Involvement in advocacy through the Milwaukee Latino Health Coalition
5. Lead Chronic Disease Self-Management courses
6. Assist in research projects coordinated by Proyecto Salud and its academic partners
7. Facilitate cultural competency trainings for Medical College of Wisconsin residents
