A Joint Project of CORE/El Centro and Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic

Moving Towards a Healthier Community Through Health Justice and Community Empowerment.

Proyecto Salud has been working in the Latino community in the greater Milwaukee area since 2006. Our mission is to create new avenues for social change and foster a community that embraces spiritual, mental and physical health as a primary goal. Working with an ecological approach to public health, our philosophy is one of collaboration and empowerment . Proyecto Salud emphasizes cultural dialogue to increase awareness, action supported by community participation, grounding of education in lived experiences, and heightening people’s consciousness to transform their own and their community’s reality. We work to create avenues to shift the paradigm of power over to power with and power within. The project addresses health holistically, respecting personal beliefs and taking into account neighborhood contexts, immigrant concerns, and other systemic and institutional factors that influence the choice of healthy behaviors and the environment in which people make these choices.

· Founded and continuing to support the growth of the Milwaukee Latino Health Coalition.

· Developed and continuing to implement a cultural competent curriculum for Latino Community Health Promoters.

· Trained and supports the development of different projects of 30 community health promoters in 12 different agencies in Milwaukee and West Allis.

· Developed and are implementing an innovative ecological approach to public health.

· Participates as a member of the health disparity team of the Wisconsin Health Department / Healthy Wisconsin 2020 Project.

· Serve in the community advisory board of the new School of Public Health at UWM.

· Developed meaningful collaborations with more than 50 agencies, universities, health departments, governmental entities.

· Developed and implemented an immigration and health course addressed to professionals and community health promoters.

Our curriculum is designed in Spanish and is developed exclusively for our Milwaukee Latino Community. It includes health advocacy, leadership development, mental and physical health, nutrition, exercise, alternative healing, project development and more. We also not only train the CHP to provide one on one health education, but train on how to promote a public health message through group activities and health preventative presentations. In addition we strategically design our program to facilitate a long term and consistent group of CHP. After the training, our current CHP are still involved at Proyecto Salud’s activities through our mentorship program, our monthly CHP support group and continues education workshops.

Ana Paula Soares Lynch is a state certified professional counselor with a Masters degree in Community and Clinical Psychology. In addition to her private practice, since she moved here from Brazil in 2005,Ana Paula has been working with public health to improve the health of the Latino Community in different non-profit organizations in Milwaukee. Ana Paula is currently the coordinator of Proyecto Salud, a joint initiative between Aurora Walker’s Point Community Clinic and CORE/El Centro. She is also the co-founder and of the Milwaukee Latino Health Coalition (MLHC), in addition to participating on the Community Advisory Consul for the UWM- School of Public Health.

Combining her skills as a mental health provider and her work with public health Ana Paula utilizes proactive and innovative techniques such as community organizing, Theater of the Oppressed (TO), non-formal education and experiential learning to create avenues for health awareness and social change. Collaborating with health care professionals, Ana Paula also combines her work with the community, her academic background, and her research experience by presenting seminars on mental and physical health. Together with Proyecto Salud’s team, Ana Paula is creating a grassroots initiative for social change towards a healthier Milwaukee Latino community. As part of this initiative, Ana Paula has developed and implemented a culturally competent curriculum to train and empower Community Health Promoters in . She now supervisors the development of 12 different projects leads by 30 health promoters in 5 agencies in Milwaukee. With the collaboration of the MLHC Ana Paula is also working closely with AHEC Madison and Milwaukee to increase opportunities for the growth of the health promoters in Milwaukee. Ana Paula sees herself as an advocate for social change in the Latino community by bridging the gap between academic research, community practice and agencies
