Hounds for Hospice event in Statesville

Hey everyone!! Last Saturday my registered thereapy dane, Nova, and I set up a booth at the Hounds for Hospice Charity Dog Walk in Stateville. This event was organized by the Ryan Newman Foundation along with the Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County to raise money for "Rainbow Kids", a Hospice program for children who have experienced loss in their family or are terminally ill. It wasn't a very large event but we did have several people come by our booth and show interest in becoming a therapy dog team and others who asked for more information about what we do. It was a great way to spread the word in this area and I'm glad we were able to participate.

I didn't get a chance to take many pictures but attached are the three that I did get of our booth. I had a banner made with the TDInc logo on it and I got bored at work and made a sign using pictures of our therapy pups at work. Combine that with brochures, bright colors, candy, dog treats and a giant dog and you've got yourself a booth sure to get some attention!! :) In the picture of the whole booth, you can see Miss Nova taking a little break in the x-pen behind the sign if you look close enough. ;)

Re: 4th of July at The Haven/Laurels
Love it!!
4th of July at The Haven/Laurels
Anyone who thinks that older people don't get excited about holidays hasn't visited a living center on the 4th of July. As we walked into The Laurels last Sunday, we were greeted by several people in the hallway on their way to the main livingroom where everyone was looking forward to a holiday event. Several residents remembered that this Sunday, the 1st one of every month, was the one that Astrid visits on and were very glad to see us walk through the door. Of course, that was only after visiting with those sitting on the benches outside waiting for the festivities to begin.

After the trip across the parking lot to The Haven and after signing in, we opened the door to a big gathering for another celebratory event. A group gathering with an activity leader is usual at The Haven on our Sunday visit, but this one was even more high spirited then usual. The organizer of these groups always invites us into the center, and this time when asking "who likes dogs" we heard so many "I do, I do(s)" that we knew we in for a fun visit.

Blog from Astrid and Barb Laughlin

Astrid was really on her game last Sunday (6/20) at Pineville Living and Rehabilitation center. The reason for this was, if there is one thing Astrid likes better than visiting, it's visiting when there are other dogs there too. Pineville never disappoints! Karen and her greyhounds along with Ellie Mae made for a really fun visit.

Each venue has it's plus side, and we think the plus side to the Pineville center is that there are always so many people in the hallway to visit with as we make our way from room to room. It's hard to find places in the summer's heat to take Astrid out to for a little socialization. Roaming the cool hallways this past Sunday at Pineville was a good break for all three of us from just staying home.

Violence against animals...then humans
Breaking the violence link; the root of rescue
June 22, 4:30 PMCharlotte Dog Rescue ExaminerSara Enos

When you think of a rescue organization, do you think of crime prevention?

Psychologists and other behavioral experts have long linked the behavior between abusive acts towards animals with abusive acts towards humans. In the dog world, dog aggression and human aggression are not connected with one another; in the human world, the connection is startlingly solid.

Law enforcement divisions have slowly but surely been opening up to voices from animal welfare enthusiasts. They are seeing the association between violent crimes with animals and criminal behavior. Preventing animal cruelty by teaching compassion and responsibility, as well as increasing punishment for violent acts against animals, can ultimately lead to less acts of violence and other forms of criminal activity.

In Charlotte’s neighboring town of Denver lies a staggering example of how violence begets violence. Timothy Scott Putt, convicted of killing a Jack Russell Terrier by slamming it to the ground, is a ticking time bomb. He has a history of assault, (including strangulation of a woman), kidnapping, larceny, assault with a gun, and several other offenses.

With the Queen city and her surrounding cities’ issues with dog fighting, one can imagine the scale of violence that our police department is up against.

David Berkowitz, (Son of Sam), Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer were all involved in horrendous acts of animal abuse; all were serial killers.

How do rescue organizations fit in the picture? Several groups are tackling animal abuse and neglect from the root of the problem; they are taking preventative measures against abuse as veterinarians practice preventative medicine against disease. The HSUS has a political foot in the door to help strengthen laws against Puppy Mills, Susie’s Law was just passed in North Carolina stiffening the reprimand for animal cruelty, the ASPCA has developed a veterinary forensics program in conjunction with the University of Florida, the American Pit Bull Foundation works with dog owners to teach compassion and promote responsible ownership, and the Knockout Dog Fighting Program created by Kris Krawford also heads up an anti-gang program. Charlotte also houses a program currently in place with the school system that works with children and animal care and compassion.

Preventing violence with animals will ultimately prevent violence with people. As rescue organizations and law enforcement agencies team up for a common purpose via different avenues, the results are collectively, overwhelmingly, beneficial to society as a whole.

The next time you see an advertisement for a rescue organization reaching out for help, remember how their work is linked with crime prevention. For the safety of your community’s well being, reach back.
Violence may beget violence, but kindness begets kindness, and kindness is a much bigger dog.
