And dance in the rain they did.... Hundreds of pugs came out on a chilly, wet May afternoon to play, run, wiggle and have fun with each other. Everywhere you looked, huddles of pugs were gathered in little clumps, sniffing one another to show their approval and appreciation. Happy, energetic, curious and just plain silly; the pugs were having a great day on the lawn.
The people owned by the pugs were also in attendance (having been necessary to actually transport the small dogs to the proper location). Covered in hair, mud and the occasional snot glob or eye booger, the owners chatted gleefully, telling pug stories to one another. Whether rescued or raised since birth, each pug had its own unique history. Many had overcome great challenges and health issues, others were luckier; but regardless of their backgrounds, they kept playing and smiling -- enjoying the cloudy day.
Both of my pugs, Lucinda (Lucie) Williams and Kimbo Slice, are rescues. Lucie was my first pug, and I credit her for bringing me through some of the toughest times in my life. My boyfriend of 2 years had dumped me to marry another girl. Then, my degenerative spinal disease got worse and I had to have two back surgeries, back-to-back (no pun intended). Lucie had joined my household just two months before, and we didn't know each other very well. However, when I came home from the hospital, she stayed right by my side as if she had been my loyal companion for years. It was so comforting to cuddle up with such a warm, sweet little pugball who always had a look of deep concern on her face. Whenever I would start to hurt or feel down, all I had to do was look at that little funny clown face and I would immediately feel better.
Since then I have fostered a few pugs for MCPR and now have two “forever” pugs - Lucie and Kimbo. Today at Pugnic, they romped and played and grunted and did tricks for treats. Even in the rain, these little creatures were happy -- happy to be with their "people" and happy to be with one another. And as I wondered around taking pictures of these quirky and funny-looking little dogs…these unique wonders of canine nature, I realized that not only does God have a great sense of humor...(sometimes making me the butt of his jokes), but he (or she) also cares enough to send angels to watch over us and help us maneuver through this life – angels in all forms, shapes, colors and sizes… And, of course, breeds.
