~Life in Moscow~

(July 2009)

We just moved to Moscow, Idaho and are loving the beautiful area and small-town feel of it all. David applied to the University of Washington as an Idaho resident, and UW has an agreement with Idaho (and 4 other states in the region that don't have their own medical schools) to accept 20 students a year, and then those students spend their first year in their resident state. So we will be spending this next year in Moscow where the University of Idaho is, and will then move back to Seattle for the rest of medical school.

~Our year in Portland~

(From June 2008-July 2009)

Our year in Portland was a wonderful and very eventful one. David loved his job and had incredible learning opportunities working with a renowned physician, while successfully going through the whole medical school application and interview process. We were so excited to get his acceptance from his first choice, the University of Washington! We received this exciting news about a month before we were blessed to have our long awaited for daughter Elliana Rose join our family on the 13th of April!

Here is a photo book I put together of my pregnancy and arrival of our little Ellie:

{Ellie's 1 year update...FINALLY!} 5/4/10

I FINALLY got around to writing Elliana's 1 year post! You can view it on her page.

{Elliana's 1 year Luau Party!}

Back on the 17th of this month we celebrated Elliana's first birthday Hawaiian style!

We started the party by dressing Ellie and her best little friends up in grass skirts and leis to go play in the "Hawaiian Fun Island"...it wasn't too hard to guess whether Elliana liked it or not!...

I don't think I've ever seen Elliana have more fun!!!

Then it was on to the food! We had a lot of fun prepping the food for the Luau, but I can't tell you just how grateful we were to Mom and Dad Rainey, who came up for the weekend and were put to some serious work! They were so incredibly helpful and we can't thank them enough for all they did!

Because we couldn't roast a whole pig, we took a different "Hawaiian" route and had pineapple in just about everything we made, like Sweet & Sour Pork...

Just about the only thing I made without pineapple in it were these Cake Pops. I got the idea from a friend and  I loved how they turned out!
While we actually had a beautiful "real" cake that David's parents were so kind to get, we ended up just using one of these Cake Pops to put Elliana's birthday candle in and sing Happy Birthday to her.
Our one and only game was inspired by a little competition David and our friend Rick started up. David had told Rick how he wanted to give Elliana carrot cake at her party, but Rick thought she'd like his homemade chocolate cake better, so it was turned into a competition to see which cake Ellie would prefer. We rolled out a long piece of white crate paper and after placing a piece of David's carrot cake and a piece of Rick's chocolate cake on separate plates down on one end, we set Ellie down on the paper at the other end and let her loose!

It was hilarious!

Ellie immediately fixed her eyes on Rick's chocolate cake and went directly for it without wavering for a second!

We were all laughing so hard!
It turned out to be a perfect birthday party game, so thanks David and Rick for coming up with such a funny bet, and congratulations again to Rick for winning the game! (Hope the blow-up monkey you won made it all worth it! :)

Here is what it looked like:

Zoned in and on the move...

Successful contact...

The first taste...

In total disbelief of the AMAZING stuff she just ate!...

Studying it some more...

...And some more...

Checking once more to see if it's REALLY ok to be eating this...

Sooooo very happy!!!

Finally, considering the carrot cake...

After giving Ellie a mini bath in the bathroom sink, we moved on to opening presents. Ellie has the greatest friends and the best Grandparents! They were all too good to our little Hula Girl!
A big, BIG thank you to everyone who came and helped to make Elliana's birthday an extra special one!!!

{This Beautiful Easter} 4/7/10

This Easter was beautiful in so many ways. While it was gorgeous and sunny outside (though still freezing), I have a feeling that if it had been gloomy out it still would have been an extra beautiful and bright day. I couldn't pin point the reason, but starting the evening before, I felt so much peace, happiness and pure joy in my heart, which stayed with me throughout Easter. Maybe it was because it was my first Easter being a mother....maybe it was an increased focus on our Savior...maybe it was stepping back and really paying attention to all the many things I absolutely love about my husband....maybe (and I'm pretty sure) it was a combination of ALL of these things! My heart was (and is still) so full and I just wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for all the many blessings I've been given in my life. Life is SO GREAT and I truly have so much to be grateful for. I know that this is all because of the grace of our Savior, His sacrifice, resurrection, and perfect example. I am so grateful.

Holidays have become especially fun ever since Elliana joined our family, and this Easter was no exception! The Easter Bunny was very good to us this year, and mixed things up a bit by bringing us Easter BUCKETS instead of baskets :)
Elliana had lots of fun going through her Easter Bucket, and was especially excited over the yummy treats she found...

Caught just after throwing WAY TO MANY treats in her mouth at one time!....

The treats in her Easter Bucket were so tasty she apparently wanted to see if her bucket tasted just as good...
The Easter Bunny knew exactly what Ellie is into right now. She absolutely LOVES books and animals, so this gift was a huge success!...
David made us an incredible Easter breakfast. His famous Cheese Blintz crepes are a must on special holidays :) ....
Soon, it was time for Conference to start. Elliana LOVED all the beautiful singing and music as it was starting and she kept pointing at it, mesmerized....
It was a wonderful way to start out our Easter Sunday. I absolutely loved this Conference. I can think of only one other Conference where I felt so edified. We were all very happy...

Love this girl!...

We had the privilege of having Easter dinner with a number of our closest friends. It was so much fun and oh-so-delicious!

I just had to take advantage of having Elliana with two of her best friends (Baylie and Zoey) together on Easter and this is what came of it.......

Hope you had a very HAPPY EASTER!!!

{Dear readers, } 3/20/10

My dear sweet blog readers,

First of all, I wanted to thank you for being so patient with me and my sad attempts for keeping up this blog! I also know there are so many of you who are driven crazy over how you can't leave comments on this like all the other normal blogs (due to not having a Shutterfly account)...thanks for still reading and "commenting" in other ways.

As you know, I've
never been the best at blogging, but over the past few months I've been ESPECIALLY bad!!! I do have somewhat of an explanation as to why I've been this way, and I thought I would share.

The Photography Bug caught me
(pretty bad) a while back, and due to this, all my "spare time" (aka Ellie's nap times) have been spent on editing photo shoots and learning all I can to increase in my knowledge and skill.
I started up a
photography blog a couple months ago, and I've been having a blast with it!
It is found at:
http://raineyphotos.blogspot.com/

Hope this helps make up (at least a little) for how much I've been slacking on this site!

Much love,

Carrie

{The Color Teal} 2/10/10

Teal is my favorite color. It's happy, bright, and reminds me of our time living in Hawaii and playing in the vibrant colored ocean water. You can find splashes of this color all throughout my home, and my eye is drawn to it wherever I go, so you can imagine my excitement when I passed by this teal colored door on one of my recent walks through town :)

{Backtracking} 1/25/09

Well, I've given up on recovering the memory card (for now at least) so it's time to do some serious backtracking with what pictures family members took (a big thanks to Christine) and some I took with our other camera. I think we've got a pretty good collection of pics gathered up now to tell most of our Christmas adventure story.

We were blessed to be able to spend about 3 weeks with my family in Seattle for Christmas this year and the greatest thing was that EVERYONE was able to be there together at the same time! This hasn't happened for years now, so it was an extra special and event-filled Holiday! We absolutely loved it!

One of our first (and best) adventures we had was a snow-shoeing trek up to a cabin on Mt Rainer. Pictures of this incredible trip were what mostly filled my damaged memory card, so I'm determined to recover the pics and I'll post ALL about it then.

Elliana had so much fun playing with her cousins, aunts, uncles, and her Grandma Daniels. They were all so great with her, and were so kind to babysit so David and I could go on some dates. Outside of one other time (months before) when my sister and mom watched Ellie after I had put her down for the night, this was the first time we had left Elliana to be babysat. I was of course a bit nervous she would be a little too aware we were not there, and subsequently give my family a rough time, but when we came home, she was happy as could be and acted like she didn't care we were even gone (or that we had come back) in the least! It actually made me really happy to know she could do so well with others :)

Christmas day was wonderful and it was so much fun for David and I to direct our focus on Ellie. I've had dreams for years about what it would be like to celebrate the gift and birth of Christ, having been blessed with a little one of our own sent from above...it was more wonderful than I had even hoped for.

Here are some pictures of Elliana on Christmas morning (and some family pics).

It was a wonderful and very memorable Christmas!

A few days later a bunch of us went to Bellevue to go ice skating. I can't remember the last time I had been ice skating, and it was the first time David and I had been skating together....we had a blast!
A couple days after Christmas we went and played in downtown Seattle. First, we went to the famous Pike Place Market and had fun watching the fish fly and looking at all the Christmas lights they had up there. This was my first time ever going to Pike's during Christmas time, and I loved how they decorated with all the lights!
Then David and Brad met up with us, having come straight from snowboarding all day, and we went to see a huge display of gingerbread houses (I guess they were actually made out of gram crackers and all had themes like "The Polar Express" or "Charlie Brown's Christmas", and it took these people 6 months to make them all)...
...then we went and got Starbucks caramel apple cider (my new favorite drink)...
...and then finished the night off with riding on the Carousel! It was Elliana's first time on a carousel and she LOVED it! It had everything she is very into these days...lights, music, and movement Smiling...
David and I were laughing about how exhausted we were throughout this entire trip, when we had pictured it being so laid back. It seemed like we were going non-stop, from one activity to the next...AND REALLY WOULDN'T HAVE HAD IT ANY OTHER WAY! We had an incredible time with family, and can't wait till our next Christmas we can all spend together!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a very happy start of this new year!
We are currently in the process of trying to recover our camera's 8 GB memory card (completely filled with all the events and happenings throughout our time spent in Seattle for Christmas and New Years) that got damaged. Wish us luck.
In the meantime, thought we'd post this video clip David took while he was "watching" Elliana a couple mornings after Christmas. :)
Enjoy!!!

Ellie is just darling, and I'm so glad you guys had such a wonderful Christmas and New Years. I hope your camera memory card can be fixed!

{Cousin Collin} 12/12/09

We were able to go spend Thanksgiving with David's parents in Boise, and if that wasn't special enough, one of David's sisters and her little boy Collin were there too! It was Ellie and Collin's first time meeting each other and they both adored one another! VERY CUTE. Collin was so sweet with Ellie from the minute we walked in the door and it seemed like his love for her just kept growing throughout the week...by the time we left, it was like he took on this older, protective brother roll, and was very concerned whenever he heard Ellie crying. He often found her so interesting that he had a hard time keeping his hands off her face, and Ellie payed him back one time by pulling his hair. (sorry Collin :) Ellie would get very excited whenever Collin came into view and she would smile and talk a lot to him. It was so fun seeing these two little cousins interacting with each other...I'm excited for the many more fun cousin times still to come!

Thank you to Mom & Dad Rainey, Becca, and Collin for a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Well, I can't believe I failed to get any pictures of the two of them playing together, but here are some pics of Mr. Collin....SUCH A HANDSOME DOLL! WE MISS YOU LOTS COLLIN!!!

~~The Farmer's Market~~ 11/15/09

One of our favorite things to do here on Saturday mornings is to go to the local Farmers Market. It's a fun atmosphere, and we like just walking around browsing all the different stands, and of course occasionally getting some treats. They sell things ranging from fresh produce and baked goods, to hats, jewelry and art.

When David's parents were here visiting, we all went and had some great food. Here are some pictures from that day.

~~David's Birthday~~ 11/6/09

We are backtracking a bit here, but way back on the 18th of October we celebrated my wonderful hubby's Birthday! We had the pleasure of having David's parents come visit from Boise that same weekend, which made for an extra special birthday celebration! It was great having them here, and they were so sweet to take us out to dinner at a great Mexican restaurant here in downtown Moscow the night before David's b-day, and then on his b-day cook an incredible Korean feast! (our favorite :)
David's dad made delicious Korean pancakes for our dessert, which counted as the first of four b-day cakes David had. We later had some of our friends over for another cake, two pies, games, and of course to celebrate David. He is definitely worth celebrating!!!

Here are some pics taken throughout all these events:

~~Extra Special~~ 9/13/09

Today is an extra special day. First of all, it is the birthday of my awesome nephew Spencer!...
...Spencer is so great! He is very smart, athletic, and very fun to be around, but I think the coolest thing of all is how he is such a great brother to his little sister and brother, and really nice to everyone around him! Nothing gets much cooler than that!...Way to be Spencer, and we wish you the HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS!!! Wish we could be there to celebrate with you!

The second thing that makes today special is that Elliana reached her 5 month mark! (as usual, you can read more about it on her page)

~~Loving it here in Moscow!~~ 9/10/09

We are absolutely loving it here in Moscow! We are really enjoying our new little home, the beautiful surroundings, incredible friends we have made, and even medical school! :)

David is now in his 4th week of medical school and he's already had some pretty neat experiences at the hospital, 'scrubbing in', and at his preceptorship he's doing with an Optimologist. He is also getting a better idea of just how much studying he needs to be doing, and how to do that while still balancing all the other areas in life as well.
Ellie and I are very proud of him. :)

David has some awesome medical school buddies that have incredible spouses and kids (one here now, and two due to be here in October :) that we've been having a ton of fun getting together with! We all meet for lunch two times a week, and have found some excuse to get together just about every weekend. We love it!

This past weekend we went to the local water park and had a blast! It was Ellie's first time going in the water (outside of her baths) and she really liked it!

Here are some pictures from our time at the water park:

~~Meeting Hayden Nicole~~ 8/27/09

While in Seattle we had the privilege of meeting our newest niece Hayden Nicole. She is such a cutie and looks so much like her older sister Ella! Every time I held her I was amazed by how little and light she was, which made me realize just how much Elliana has grown!
It was fun watching Ellie and Hayden meet and "play" with each other for the first time. They are only about 3 months apart, and I'm so excited for them to be little buddies growing up!
We are so happy beautiful Hayden has joined the fam!

Here are a couple pictures of Hayden and Ellie meeting for the first time, and then a few of my favorite pics I took of Hayden and her gorgeous mommy:

~~A Daddy and his Daughter~~ 8/19/09

For years now, I've watched David as he's been the fun "uncle" to all the kids around us while living in Hawaii, and the fun real uncle to his nieces and nephews. I've always loved watching him interact with kids, and it would always put a smile on my face watching the way he'd put smiles on theirs...but there is just nothing like watching him with his own daughter!

It's been so fun watching the two of them develop their adorable relationship together. Ellie lights up whenever she see's her daddy walk in the room, and will stop whatever she's doing to look for David if she hears his voice. I can tell she loves how fun he is by always taking her on flying adventures around the house and outside, not to mention the teaching, singing, dancing and all sorts of crazy things he does to entertain her and make her laugh!

Elliana has definitely won over David's heart. He is completely enamored by her, and she has him wrapped around her little pinky.

There is just nothing as beautiful as a daddy who loves his daughter.

So cute and so true!! She looks SO happy to be with David!

~~A BIG day! ~~ 8/13/09

Today was a big day. First of all, David officially started Medical School...(continues below)
...Yayyyyyy! Ellie and I are very excited and proud of him, but let's also be honest here...we pretty much just kissed him goodbye to an extremely busy new life as a medical student. While that part of it will be a bit difficult, we are still very excited for him and our new life in medical school!

The other BIG thing that happened today is that Elliana reached her 4 month mark! (Once again, if you'd like to read more about it, you can take a look at her page).

~~Our 4th of July in Hood River~~ 6/10/09

Due to us officially leaving Portland a little later in the day than we had hoped for and being more exhausted than we had anticipated, we decided to play it safe and stay the night in Hood River (which is about an hour east of Portland). We loved the hotel and area we stayed at so much that we couldn't make ourselves leave the next morning, and decided to turn our move to Moscow into an extended fun little family vacation!

David and I decided that we could be very happy living in Hood River! It is absolutely gorgeous in both the summer and winter time (we stayed here overnight due to a big snow storm we hit on our drive to Boise for Christmas, and the town was enchanting covered in snow!), it sits right on the Columbia River, is very close to Mt Hood, it has a charming small-town feel, and is a short distance away from Portland.

We were so happy we stayed a bit longer and had a blast exploring and relaxing.

Here are some pictures of our time in Hood River:

~~Hittin the Road for Medical School~~ 7/2/09

Things have been getting pretty crazy around here. Boxes, tape and bubble wrap have filled our place for the past week or so, and we've finally finished packing for our big move from Portland to MOSCOW......not Russia, but Idaho! Moscow is in northern Idaho, right next to Pullman Washington.

Why Moscow of all places you ask...well this brings me to the fact that I failed to post about David's acceptances to medical schools! We had been hearing back from all the schools David interviewed at since February, and in March David heard back from his first choice, the University of Washington! We were so excited to hear the great news of his acceptance, and can't wait to be in SEATTLE where most all my family is. So why Moscow then? Well David applied as an Idaho resident, and UW has an agreement with Idaho (and 4 other states in the region that don't have their own medical schools) to accept 20 students a year, and then those students spend their first year in their resident state. So we will be spending this next year in Moscow where the University of Idaho is, and will then move back to Seattle for the rest of medical school.

We really loved the Portland region and will miss the beautiful area we lived in and the wonderful friends we made, but we're pretty excited to spend this next year in the small town of Moscow and start this new adventure of life in medical school!

YAY!!! Congratulations David!! We're so excited for you guys. Doesn't it seem like good things happen all at once? Carrie I'm sorry we haven't talked yet! I was visiting my sister when you called and I don't have long distance to call you back. I really miss you and would love to talk to you but I know you guys are super busy. Call if you ever get a chance or I'll call you if we get long distance, which I hope is soon! Good luck Raineys!

~~Elliana reached 8 weeks old today! --- June 8th 2009~~

I can't believe Ellie is already 2 months old! It's gone by so fast...too fast. She's definitely growing quickly and it seems like she changes the way she looks almost every day! I honestly can't figure out what she looks like because she is constantly changing so much...one thing is for certain though, she takes after her Grandpa Rainey as well as her Grandma Daniels WAY MORE than she takes after David or me! :)

~~Ellie's New Page~~

I decided to add another page onto this site dedicated to updates and the 'happenings' of Elliana. It is called "All About Ellie" and is accessed by clicking on the "All About Ellie" button found just to the right of the "Home" button at the top left corner of this page.
I thought this would be a fun way to organize and consolidate Ellie's 'firsts' and other records I've been keeping. I've also included my birth story for those of you who have been requesting it.
Hope you enjoy!

~~Smiles and bath time fun!~~ 6/5/09

Our little Ellie is in her 7th week and is getting to be so much fun! We started seeing true smiles from her when she was 5 weeks old, but since last week, she has been extra responsive and smiling up a storm for David and me! We love it, and it's so much fun to see her little personality start coming out! She's been extremely alert and able to focus on things since day one, and has been showing us lately just how inquisitive, strong, assertive, happy (especially when she's not battling tummy issues) and cuddly she is!
At 6 weeks, she also started liking bath time! She was definitely NOT a fan at the beginning, but ever since David gave her a bath all by himself (I was very impressed BTW!) a couple weeks ago she has liked them. Here are a few of our favorite bath time and smiley pics.

~~A very special weekend~~ 5/19/09

This weekend was a very special and eventful one. The fun all started last Thursday when David's mom, dad, and brother Ammon came to visit. It was their first time meeting Elliana, and we loved having them here! On Friday we all headed up to Seattle for my niece Michelle's baptism... (CONTINUES BELOW)

We took advantage of the beautiful warm weather and took the boat out on the lake. Here are some pictures of the boys (Jeff, Kurt, David, and Ammon) putting on a show for David's parents, my mom, and niece Ella. We only took video of Ammon (forgot to take pics) but he did an incredible job wake boarding for his first time! Kurt pulled out some of his fancy tricks, Jeff did awesome getting up backwards on two skis for his first time, and David had fun wake boarding and got up on one ski his first try!
They all had a blast!...(CONTINUES BELOW)

...Finally, we had the opportunity of giving Elliana her baby blessing at church on Sunday. We decided this weekend was a perfect time to have the baby blessing since everyone was getting all together for Michelle's baptism anyways...we really missed not having Christine and Eric there though.

The blessing was absolutely beautiful, and little Ellie was very good throughout the whole thing! We are so grateful for the true blessing she is in our lives!

We loved spending time with so many of our family members, and were very sad when our time together came to a close. It was truly an incredible and very memorable weekend!

~~Elliana Rose Rainey~~ 4/20/09

One week ago today, David and I were blessed to have Elliana Rose Rainey make her grand entrance into this world and join our family! She was born at 9:04pm, weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

The name Elliana is Hebrew for "The Lord answered our prayers", and an answer to our many prayers is exactly what our little girl is!

Her middle name also has special meaning and is connected to some incredible women. On David's side of the family, Grandma Rainey's  name is Donna Rose, and his aunt and sister's first names are Rosemary. My mother was born in the month of June, which month's flower is a rose. Anything and everything associated with flowers reminds me of my mother.
We can only hope Ellie takes after the wonderful qualities that these remarkable women possess.

Words can't fully express just how grateful and overjoyed we are for this precious miracle in our lives! We are absolutely IN LOVE with her!

Thank you to all of you who have shown so much love and support to us all throughout!

Maternity Photo Shoot

~~Leah Remillet Photography~~ 4/8/09

My dear friend Leah recently started up her photography business and took these photos of me about 4 weeks ago. I had a ton of fun throughout the shoot, and am so grateful she was able to capture this special time in my life! She is currently living in the Vancouver/Portland area, and does shoots in the Seattle area as well. Here is the link to her photography blog to see more of her work:

Shortsands Beach, Oregon Coast

~~Trip to the Oregon Coast~~ 4/7/09

We've been having the most gorgeous warm weather here in Portland since this past Saturday, so David and I took advantage of it and made a trip out to the Oregon Coast. It was so nice to get away and enjoy the beautiful scenery and sunshine together! We had heard about this incredible beach called Shortsands, located a bit down from Canon Beach, and were very pleased with what we found! You go on a beautiful hike to get to this secluded cove, and we loved it! I have to admit, I was hoping the hike would put me into labor, but turns out, this little girl is very content right where she's at! :)
It was a wonderful and relaxing way to spend such a beautiful weekend!

~~"Wicked"~~ 3/14/09

This was such a fun weekend! We had my mom, my sister, her husband, and their 3 kids come visit us, and on Saturday, we got to go see "Wicked"!!! My ticket was a Christmas gift from David, so I've been anxiously waiting for this weekend to come for a while now....I was definitely not disappointed in the least! I absolutely LOVED this musical, and can't wait to see it again! I kept thinking throughout the whole thing how it didn't want it to end! My mom, sister, her husband and I all went, while David was so sweet to stay behind and watch our niece and nephews for us. A big thanks to David, and to my fam for making this weekend so much fun!

~~Baby Shower~~ 2/21/09

My dear friend Leah and the girls in my family were so kind to throw me a baby shower in Seattle a few weeks ago. It was so much fun to see so many friends I haven't seen in such a long time! I'm so grateful for everyone who was there...for their loving generosity, and for their friendship! I am truly blessed to have such wonderful people in my life!

~~Our baby Valentine~~

~~Valentine's Belly Update~~

We've reached 32 weeks today, so we have roughly 8 more to go!

This little girl is extremely active and has developed quite a strong kick! At her most recent ultrasound she measured in the 37th percentile for size, her heartbeat was 151, and she looked perfectly healthy.

Here are some funny pictures of belly growth over the past two months for those of you who have been requesting pictures. :)

~~A Very Merry Christmas~~ 1/2/09

Before leaving for Boise to spend Christmas with David's family, we got to have our own little Christmas at home the Thursday before. We left the next day for Boise, but due to all the crazy snow storms, we were very lucky to make it out of Portland at all! We were very happy when we finally made it safe and sound to Boise. We loved spending Christmas with the WHOLE Rainey family! It was my very first time meeting David's sister's husband, their adorable baby boy Collin, and David's cousin Jung-Sun. We had so much fun talking, playing games, going out in the snow, and eating incredible food while celebrating Christmas all together! David and I are so grateful for such a wonderful family!

~~Seattle Christmas Tradition~~ 12/17/08

I was able to stay in Seattle an extra week after Thanksgiving, and had the opportunity to join in our family's Christmas tradition of spending an evening in downtown Seattle to ride the carousel, see the snow fall in Pacific Place, get kettle corn and hot chocolate, write letters to Santa, and walk around our favorite stores! We had a lot of fun, and then ended the night meeting up with David (who drove back up from Portland to pick me up) for dinner at a delicious Thai restaurant! It was the perfect way to start the Christmas season!

~~Kaylee's Birthday Party~~

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, my niece Kaylee celebrated her 5th birthday in style! It was the cutest thing! She invited her 3 girl cousins and two other friends to spend the day at The Spa, getting pedicures and manicures. All the girls went crazy over the little flowers that were painted on top of their manicures and pedicures! My favorite part was how cute they all looked sitting in the chairs for getting their pedicures, and how some of the girls' feet barely even reached the water! We all had a blast, and it was definitely a party fit for the sweet little princess that Kaylee is! We just LOVE her!

~~Our Happy Thanksgiving~~ 12/11/08

This Thanksgiving was a wonderful one! We had so much fun playing games with the fam, and enjoying my mom's incredible cooking (and of course admiring her amazing decorating skills!). The only thing that could have made this weekend any better would have been having my sister Christine and her husband Eric there with us...we missed them!

I'm very grateful and thankful for such an incredible, close-knit family! They bring me so much joy and happiness!

~~New Thanksgiving Tradition?~~ 12/10/08

This year, instead of playing football on Thanksgiving morning, the boys decided to go water skiing and wake boarding in the freezing cold... crazy as ever!
Jeff went first and showed off some sweet moves on the wakeboard, then Brad took on some super choppy water with one ski and made it look easy, David's learned to do some tricks now and still entertains with his spectacular wipeouts, and Kurt put on a show with all his wake board tricks and by getting up backwards on two skis his first try.
They had a blast, but it was pretty cold, so we'll find out next year whether or not this tradition lasts!

~~We're Pregnant!~~ 10/26/08

I think we've finally got a keeper! After having 3 miscarriages, I decided to wait to announce our pregnancy until we were way out of the 'danger zone', and things were looking pretty sure. We are 4 months along now, and our due date is April 11th! From the very beginning, this pregnancy has been very different from the previous ones, which is a very good thing! I never got sick with the other ones, and have been quite possibly the happiest sick person for the past 3 months that you'll ever meet! I will spare the details, but am happy to announce that I have been able to emerge from my room, look at, and even enter the kitchen without throwing up for the past two weeks now! Very exciting.
We will be finding out if we are having a boy or a girl in about a month!
We are beyond ecstatic, and will keep you posted!

P.S. Descriptions are below individual pictures in the comments section.

~~Pumpkin Patch~~ 10/25/08

We spent the most beautiful day with our friends the Stimmels at what is quite possibly the world's best pumpkin patch! It was filled with activity after activity, from a haystack pyramid, to face painting and pony rides, a corn maze, pumpkin slingshot, tractor-pulled hay ride, a petting zoo, live band, fresh apple cider and chili dogs... oh yeah, and we got to pick our own pumpkins too. The surroundings were gorgeous and we had a ton of fun! We also enjoyed spending time with our friends again, and loved taking pictures of Adi, Ella and Paysen, who we just adore! We loved every minute of this beautiful day!

~~Birthday Boy!~~ 10/18/08

On the 18th of this month, we celebrated David's 28th birthday! We actually did most of the celebrating the night before. I surprised him when he got home from work with a home made apple pie and a banana cream pie, presents, and then took him out to his favorite burrito restaurant. The pie making thing probably doesn't seem too exciting to all you regular bakers, but for me (and David), this was HUGE, and turned out being a great success! Just to clarify when you look at the pictures---the apple pie has an 8 on the crust to create '28' with the two pies put together :)
The next day on David's real birthday, we went out to a Japanese restaurant for dinner. David was so excited to get his sushi and seared ahi steak! We had a lot of fun, and I was so happy to celebrate the day such a remarkable individual came into this world!

~~Crazy Boys!~~ October 4th and 11th

The past two Saturday mornings, David, Jeff (brother), Kurt (brother), Brad (brother-in-law), and Spencer (nephew) took the boat out on Lake Washington to go water skiing and wake boarding. The crazy thing was that it was 36 degrees outside, and the water was probably in the 40's. As you can see in the pictures, there was lots of steam coming off the water. The stories we heard about their experience when they got back were hilarious! They had to scrape frost off the windshield of the boat, wait for the mist to clear so they could see where they were going, Jeff caught a fish, Brad was stuck with a 3/4 wetsuit, David landed his first jumps and had some spectacular wipeouts (as well as nearing hypothermia at one point - he got a little disoriented and had a hard time talking coherently), and my brother Kurt got up on two skis backwards! This was huge, because we'd all heard stories about how my dad would do this, so we had to keep up the tradition. They had a blast and are already planning their Thanksgiving trip! CRAZY!!!

~~Conference Weekend~~ 10/4-5/08

This Conference weekend was an even EXTRA special one! It was the first one in I don't even know how long, that our family (the Daniels side) were there all together...all 18 of us! It was so wonderful to be there at my mom's house with everyone for about 2 days straight! We all kept mentioning how it felt like Christmas, or at least Thanksgiving, and then on Sunday my mom made an incredible Thanksgiving style dinner! It was the best...our very own holiday we shared all together!

~~Spencer's Baptism and Tanner's Blessing~~ 10/3/08

Kim (my sister) and Brad decided to hold off a little for both Spencer's Baptism and Tanner's Blessing until Kurt was home from his mission and all the family was going to be there in Seattle. Due to it being Conference weekend, they were able to receive special permission to hold it on that Friday night. It was such a sweet baptismal service, filled with wonderful speakers and music. They did Tanner's baby blessing right at the beginning of the meeting, and he was perfect through the whole thing. We love Tanner, and are so proud of Spencer and his decision to be baptised! He is such a wonderful example for his siblings and cousins.

~~Kurt's Return~~ 10/1/08

Just got back from spending 2 incredible and eventful weeks up in Seattle with my family! The first and one of the most exciting things that happened was the homecoming of my younger brother Kurt from his 2 year church mission he served in Tokyo Japan! It was so exciting to greet him at the airport, and our whole family had so much fun spending time with him once again! We are sooooo happy little Kurty (OK, not so little anymore) is home again! We love him and are so proud of him!

~~The Happiest Things in Life~~ 9/24/08

What is quite possibly THE  happiest thing in my life is any and all time spent with my family! They are THE BEST, and every time we get together, it turns into a big party, and we have SO much fun! I love that David and I now live only 3 hours away from them, and am so excited for next weekend when my little brother will be coming home from his mission and EVERYONE (all 18 of us) will be there to welcome him home! Very, VERY exciting!

**Most of these pictures are from a recent visit to Seattle of my nieces and nephews. They are my pride and joy, and I can never get enough of them!**

~~Tribute to my Dad~~ 9/11/08

Exactly one year ago to the day, my father, Selden Mansfield Daniels II passed away to prostate cancer. At his funeral, I was asked to sing, so I missed the opportunity to share (through speaking) some of my favorite memories I shared with my dad, and things I appreciate and learned from him.  Here are some thoughts that just came into my mind today.

Something you could guarantee being present, just about every time you’d get my dad and any other people in the same room, is laughter. My dad had quite the sense of humor, and I can remember from a very young age, the way he would create instant bonds with people, even complete strangers, because of it. While his sarcasm would often make people roll their eyes (always with a smile), I also noticed that it made them feel relaxed, and the fact that the sarcastic remarks were most commonly about details in these people’s lives that my dad was so good at taking the time to learn and remember, made them actually feel special that he took the time to care. People just couldn’t help but love him.

My dad would also find the quiet moments to share his more ‘serious’ and soft side. I will never forget the many ways he expressed his love, care, and concern for me through the years.
He taught and shared his testimony of the gospel by example. He lived a very honest life full of service, and faithfully fulfilled callings he received in the church. He went out of his way to visit old friends whenever he was in their area, as well as the elderly, and befriended those (of all ages) who needed his support.

For as long as I can remember, he expressed a ton of excitement over returning missionaries, and would comment about how great missions are. My dad served a full-time church mission in Paris, France, and one day taught me how to say, “after my mission” in French. Once I got that down, he then told me that is how I am to respond to all the following questions he asked. He then went on to ask all sorts of questions like, “When are you going to go on your first date?”, where I would then respond by saying, “after my mission” in French. This was repeated randomly for years. Guess that was a ‘subtle’ nudge from him to go ☺

My dad helped me gain a love for music from a very young age, and taught me how to read and hear parts while singing hymns at church. I remember the first time I saw him get teary eyed while listening to the church CD “I Heard Him Come”.  It really touched me, and helped me realize the beauty and power that music can have. He taught himself how to play the piano, and one of my most precious memories from when I was little, was how for years around Christmas time, he would play “The Nativity Song” on the piano, and would have me sing to it. I think it will forever be my favorite church Christmas song.

I remember dancing with my dad in our living room from a very young age, to his records playing. I would stand on his feet the whole time while he moved his feet (and me) to the music.
I remember how funny he was right before my soccer games when I was little. He would always chant, “Kick em in the wish bone, sock em in the jaw, send em to the hospital, rah, rah, rah!”. Guess I needed the reminder to be more aggressive ☺
I remember and appreciate how excited he would get over musicals I performed in.
I learned from a very young age how to eat with your mouth closed and quietly ☺
I learned how to water-ski when I was little from him, and to love boating, and camping (even in the rain).
I remember how on family road trips, my dad would pull over for just about every single historical marker we'd come across for all of us to read (I’m pretty sure most of us kids grudgingly got out and just acted like we read them ☺)
I learned about how important hard work is from him.
I learned how much he loved his family, and loved how he would rave over how great all those who married into the family are!

I always remember being so proud to be his daughter.
I am so grateful for the love he shared, and for all the happiness and laughter he brought to my life, and all those who he came in contact with.
I love him. I miss him, but know my family and I will be able to reunite with him once again, and live together for eternity!

My Dad, 9/11/08

Our new baby Nephew! 9/6/08

David and I finally got to get back up to Seattle and meet our new nephew Tanner this weekend! He is about 3 weeks old, and so adorable! I can see both his older brother and sister in him. I could have taken pictures of him forever...I couldn't get enough of his cute little feet and all the adorable facial expressions he would make! We are so happy he joined the fam!

~~Birthday Celebration~~ 8/14/08

This was an incredible day! It started with some amazing sushi for lunch, followed up with one of my life-long dreams coming true, seeing Broadway's Phantom of the Opera. We ended the evening with a feast at Todai! The day couldn't have been any more perfect!!!

~~Mom and Dad Rainey's visit~~ 8/7-11/08

We were so happy to have David's parents come and visit us! It was so great to spend time with them again.  Here are some pictures of an amazing Moroccan restaurant they were so kind to take us to for our anniversary, and also some pictures of taking them out to the farms on Sauvie Island (again :).

A Baby Story>

~Our move to Portland, Oregon~

June of 2008

David decided he needed to get some more clinical experience before applying for medical schools this year, so he applied to  research jobs all over the place, including here at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). After interviewing for a number of positions, he was offered his first choice, working as a research assistant for one of the world's leading experts on contact dermatitis, and he loves it! He is this doctor's only employee, and consequently has been very familiarized with the ins and outs of running a clinic, as well as having the opportunity to "play doctor" while seeing patients. :) While his work keeps him extremely busy, he is loving all he is learning and gaining from it!

The move here to Portland was a very rushed one, but we luckily found a place we like, and have had fun getting all settled in. We have also had a lot of fun touring around the Portland area, as well as making some trips out to the oregon coast.

Here is a photo book of our adventures of getting to know Portland:

...For the weekend of the 4th of July, we were lucky enough to have my Mom, sister, her husband and their two kids come down from Seattle to visit. We had a blast, and were so sad to see them go.

~Our year in Boise~

June 2007- June 2008

After David's graduation, we moved to Boise, Idaho, where David got a job working in a molecular biology lab for Simplot, and I got some more training under my belt, and got certified as an Intensive Behavior Intervention Therapist. David's family lives in Boise, and I loved getting to spend time with them and getting to know them so much better! They are honestly the best in-laws I could have ever asked for!
We were able to go on a number of trips with them, one being a trip we took to St. George to visit David's Grandparents.

Here is a photo book of our trip to St. George:

~Our 3 year Honeymoon in Hawaii~

August 2004-June 2007

After our wedding receptions, we went and spent a week in Las Vegas, and then continued our honeymoon on to Hawaii, where we spent our first 3 wonderful years together. Our original plan was to only spend one semester there, in order for me to finish my degree in Special Education, and then head back to Utah for David to finish his schooling there. All it took were those first 3 months there in Hawaii though, and David was hooked! He fell in love with Hawaii and decided he wanted to complete his schooling there instead! It was perfect...we had unforgettable experiences while living there, and met the most incredible people. David had great internship opportunities made available to him, where we got to spend a summer in Alaska, and I had amazing job experiences working as a behavior therapist in school settings as well as doing Early Intervention with the most darling kids in in-home settings.

Outside of my actual scrapbooks, the first photo book I made in Hawaii was one of our trips we took to Kauai and the Big Island over Christmas and New Years of 2006-2007. They were both incredible trips we will forever remember.

Here is our Kauai and Big Island Trip Book:

~Our Story, from the very beginning, through to our wedding~

Unbeknownst to me, the very first time David and I crossed paths was while I was in Korea, serving a church mission, and David was spending about 6 months there working. He saw me walking out of the Seoul temple, while he was walking in, and recognized me a year later when we were taking the same Korean class at school. While I tried to deny it, I was drawn to him the minute I saw him walk into our class. We went on our first date a couple weeks later, and after a year we were more than happily married on August 6th, 2004 in the Seattle temple. We were so happy that day, even the down pour of rain seemed bright and beautiful to us! It was a perfect 'Rainey' wedding!

Back on the 17th of this month we celebrated Elliana's 1st birthday Hawaiian style!

We started the party by dressing Ellie and her best little friends up in their grass skirts and leis for playing in the "Hawaiian Fun Island"...it wasn't too hard to guess whether Ellie liked it! :)
