On Saturday, September 10th-84 Northland Gardeners gathered at the Gogebic Community College Lindquist Center.
Our fall gardening conference is for all northland gardeners, regardless of age or experience. The conference instructors offer their expertise to all enthusiasts. This is a rare opportunity to learn from the best instructors from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
We had four specialists speaking on various topics.
Specialist Bios:
Dr. Robert Tomesh-now retired UW-Extension, Cooperative Extension-Horticulture Specialist. In the past 34 years, his responsibilities include providing statewide training and support to Master Gardeners, Fresh Market Fruit and Vegetable Growers, County Extension Agriculture Agents assisting horticulture producers and urban horticulture residents and other statewide horticulture outreach education efforts.
Clayton Oslund -PhD Professor emeritus, University of MN, Founder of Shady Oaks Nursery, Waseca, MN. Senior author of: Hawaiian Gardens are to Go to - A treasury of Tropical Plants and Gardens and What’s Doin’ the Bloomin’? - A Pictorial Guide to Wildflowers of the Upper Great Lakes Regions, Eastern Canada and Northeastern U. S. A.– now in third edition.
Larry and Lori Stute- Larry is the wholesale director and in charge of production at Engwall’s in Duluth, MN. Along with his wife Lori , they own Peterson Greenhouse in Iron River, WI. In Denver , CO they worked at Veldkamps, where there are 30 acres of greenhouses.
All northland gardeners were invited to our conference. You did not have to be a Master Gardener to attend.

The RMGV's set up coffee, tea, juice, muffins and home baked goods for breakfast and breaks. Steep Creek wraps, chips and pies from Rigoni's Bakery was served at lunch time.

Perennials-The latest , greatest and old stand bys.
The RMGV's had silent auction items to bid on and there were about 60 door prizes from major garden companies given away, totaling about $2000. Each attendee was given a goodie bag worth $20 filled with gardening products. The muffins, pies and desserts and the lunch we had were first class fare. Attendees liked the idea that all this plus coffee, tea and water were available to them all day.
