Range Master Gardener Volunteer Association - Washington Grade School Bessemer, MI Project

Bessemer Washington School
Range Master Gardeners  instruct 4th grade students from Bessemer's Washington School on gardening basics. Students get to sow seeds in early spring. When weather permits they plant the flowers in front of their school building. During summer recess the students volunteer to weed and water their garden.

A gardening project that began in March came to its conclusion yesterday when the Washington School fourth grade students brought their flowers to the outdoors to be be planted.

Students of Ronni Osier's class began the gardening project in their classroom on March 23rd.. At that time the students planted Marigold and Petunia seeds. Now after ten weeks the flowers have grown substantially and will used to decorate the front of the Washington School building

.Yesterday, three Master gardeners along with other volunteers and Mrs. Osier, helped with the project and provided instructions to the young gardeners. Ronni Osier is a very fine gardener herself and her students were well instructed on gardening basics. Marigolds were planted along both sides of the steps leading to the school's entrance. At the base of the steps students planted the Petunias. Several varieties of Marigolds were planted around the flagpole and in front of the Washington school sign.

BESSEMER - April 2, 2011

Each spring members of the Range Master Gardeners provide seed planting instruction to the Washington School fourth grade students. This week, five Master Gardens visited students in Mrs. Carver’s and Mrs. Osiers classes.

Master Garden Gordon Frase taught each class the fundamentals of seed starting. The students learn about plant structure, growth requirements, sowing details as well as what to observe when reading the envelope that seeds come in.

This year as in years past the students sowed marigold seeds. They will be able to care for the seeds using the information that they learned in their classroom instruction.

Just prior to school closing for summer recess, the students will take their plants outdoors and will plant them around the school sign and along the the steps leading to the front door.

Assisting Frase in the classroom were Master Gardeners Jewel Lakvold, Chris Ainslie,  Bonnie Maki and Lou Bonagura.

RMGV Gordon Frase has been in charge of this project for years.  First, in the classroom, he instructs the students how to sow seeds and care for the seedlings.  About ten weeks later the plants are brought outside and students are taught how to plant the flowers and how to water them.
