We're moving.....back!

A little over a year ago I switched over to this blog so that I could also share all our pictures the same place I updated our blog. Long Overdue Update!

We are way over due for an update on the Rathlisberger Family! I can’t believe we already well in to September, where did summer go? Time flies!

Well, since the last time I updated this Allison was just 6 months old, a lot of stuff has happened with her and hitting some fun milestones!

Important milestone dates -

May 21^st, Allison starting sitting up unassisted. Before having Allison this was always my favorite milestone for babies. Sitting up is their first taste of independence and with that, their personality starts to shine through a bit more. Although I was excited when Allison hit this milestone, it also made me a little sad…for the same reasons why it is so exciting. My little peanut was really growing up and didn’t need me as much as she did before.

July 21^st Allison started pulling herself up on furniture and she hasn’t stopped since! It’s no wonder she is still so small, she is constantly moving. Her favorite thing to do is to pull herself up, sit back down, pull herself up, sit back down over and over and over again, I get tired just watching her!

July 25^th Allison was baptized at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Holy Name was the church I grew up going to as well as the church my nephews and niece were baptized in, so it was a pretty special day. After the baptism we had a small party for Allison at my parents house. Allison is so lucky to have two wonderful sets of Godparents. My sisters and their husbands both agreed to be Godparents to Allison Aynne. We couldn’t be luckier to have such a wonderful support team of family and friends surrounding us to help raise our little girl! August 2^nd, Allison started crawling! There is no stopping her now, the world is hers to explore! Allison is showing Mommy and Daddy new things every day in which we have to “baby proof”. She loves to crawl over to the TV and pull herself up (and sit back down, and stand up, etc., etc.). Thankfully she doesn’t press the buttons too often but we will need to find something to put over the area. Wiley’s food and water dish had to find a new home too…why is it that her toys are the last things she wants to play with? Somehow she knows what she isn’t supposed to have and therefore that’s what she wants!

Mid to late August Allison started to say "mama". I'd love to pretend that she is always calling out for me, but it's her word for everything! She knows who Mommy and Daddy are because when we say "where's Mommy?, or where's Daddy?" she will look for us but for right now, everything is mama!

Allison’s favorite game to play is peek-a-boo! She is got the the point where she will even lift the blanket over her own head and pull it down to play with us, it’s too cute! We have some video of us playing from awhile ago, I will try and put that on this site too!

We’ve had a fun summer seeing a lot of family and friends. A couple weekends ago my friend Melissa was in town with her little boy who is just about 12 weeks old. They had an open house where we got to see a lot of friends and their babes. Then the next day my friend Jen had the college girls along with everyone’s children out to her place. Allison was the only little girl that whole weekend, when she is older she is going to have her pick of the boys. I noticed at the open house that I think my friend Trang’s little boy Wes may have her heart already. Allison was being shy and wouldn’t let us put her down, then the second Wes got there her eyes lit up and she didn’t want anything to do with Mom and Dad! I hope this isn’t any indication of what things are going to be like when she’s older!

Mike is busy at work getting things ready for the ski season, which is right around the corner! With the new ownership there are a lot of things to be done. Thankfully he is still usually able to take a day off a week to spend at home with Allison. Mike was also able to sneak away in July with some guys from work to ride RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). The guys weren’t actual registered riders so they had to carry all of their own gear over the 300+ miles they rode “baggers aren’t saggers” though, their theme for their ride! He had a great time but I think by the end he was ready to be home, and Allison and I were ready to have him home!

My parents are currently in Europe having what I am sure is the trip of their lifetime. While they are gone Mike's mom is staying with us to watch Allison. I have said it before and I know I will say it again but we are SO lucky to have some great family and friends in our lives there to help us with Allison. We really don't know what we'd do without everyone.

6 Months going on 7!

Sorry for such a delay in posting! I am not sure where the time goes, I am just updating now about Allison turning 6 months old and next week she will be 7..so I will make it in to one post :)

Our baby girl is over 6 months old now, Mike and I can’t believe it. We have been looking back over the past couple weeks on how far Allison has come from when she was born. Our 2 lb 15 oz little peanut is now a whopping 11 lbs 9 oz bigger peanut :). She is still on the small side, still below the 3% for her weight and head circumference but she is in the 10% for her height (24 ¼ inches). The doctor however is pleased with her development and her growth so we will just continue to do what we’ve been doing.

On her 6 month birthday we did decide to try giving Allison some rice cereal, she wasn’t a fan! I am not sure she actually swallowed any of it. We continued trying to give her the cereal for about a week but she never really got the hang of it. We decided to stop for awhile and we will revisit it again in a couple weeks.

Recently we got Allison an exersaucer and she LOVES it. I think it has been great for her to be able to stand there and play on her own, she really does seem to be a happier baby. It’s given her the chance to get some energy out as opposed to always being held or laying down. It’s been fun to see her explore with the different toys and she her little mind working trying to figure out how things work.

Last week Allison and I went to (along with my parents, sisters and niece and nephews) for my Grandma's 85th birthday. Most of my dad's side of the family was able to be there, almost 40 of us. I can't imagine what it has to be like for my Grandma to look at all of us in one place and realize that she was responsible for us all! It was so fun to see my Grandma as well as the rest of the family, the trip went way too fast.

Unfortunately when Allison and I got home for our trip, we both got sick. I started to get a sore throat on Monday and prayed Allison would catch anything from me...no such luck, she did! Thankfully it hasn't been anything more than just a runny nose for her. She has been acting just fine so I am very thankful for that. I think we are both finally starting to feel better, soon we will be back to 100%!

Grandma Jan came up on Thursday and Allison got to spend Thursday and Friday with her while Mike and I worked. It is SO nice that she is able/willing to do that, Allison loves spending time with her.

In other exciting news for our household, Mike is signing papers to become the owner (well, one of them) of Fitzharris Ski and Sport in less than a week. This has been a long time in the making and we're all excited that the time is finally here. He and the other guys who are buying it have some great ideas on what to do with the business and we are excited for what's to come!

Family Update

Our peanut turned 5 months old yesterday, I am not quite sure how that is even possible. She is still doing great, getting more and more fun every day! I think I can officially say that she is rolling over from her tummy to her back. She first did it on her 4 month birthday and I wasn’t sure if I should really count it, but after doing it several times now I will call it official. I am afraid that teething may have started, although I know it can be a long process before we ever actually see a tooth. She is drooling like a mad woman, she has rosy rosy cheeks, and her hands are constantly in her mouth. Mike and I are very lucky that Allison had no problem transitioning to sleeping through the night. It only took a week or so of getting up once in the middle of the night to eat, but since then it has been smooth sailing, she has had no problem sleeping through the night.

I think she's finally in the double digits, we are guessing around 11 to 11 1/2 pounds.

I have been back to work for a couple weeks now and I must admit, it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. If I had to go back (which I did) this is a great place to go back to. I really enjoy everyone I work with, and I do have a lot of fun at work. Allison has enjoyed spending her days with Grandma Patty who takes such good care of her. Mike has been taking a day off a week too so he and Allison get to spend some quality time together!

We had a wonderful Easter celebrating with my mom’s side of the family. It was such a beautiful day and it was so much fun to spend time with family. The children in the family enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, it was so fun watching them all run around searching for their eggs…I can’t wait for Allison to be able to join in on the fun.

The Sand Family on Easter

Allison and I are going to Arizona in May with my family. I turn the big 3-0 on May 19^th and the same day my Grandma turns 85! We are flying out on the 20^th to see my Dad’s family and celebrate with my Grandma. It has been a couple years since I have seen many of them and they obviously haven’t met Allison yet, we are really looking forward to it. I am a little nervous about flying with Allison, you never want to be the one with the screaming baby, so let’s hope she just sleeps through the whole flight!

One Day at a Time!

I am going back to work tomorrow, and I am not ready...not ready at all. We just put Allison down for the night and I am having to keep myself busy by doing whatever I can to not cry. I am not ready! I keep telling myself "one day at a time", I can get through one day at a time! Knowing I won't be home with her again like I have been for the past 4 months is too hard to handle...one day at a time I can do, one day at a time!

I wanted to say a special thank you to my mother-in-law Jan, Mike's Grandma, and two aunts, Tammy and Lori for throwing me and Allison a wonderful shower a week ago Sunday. It was great to see a lot of the family that I haven't seen in ages. The shower was wonderful so thank you to all you ladies that helped make it possible and all of you that attended!

On March 6th our little peanut turned 4 months old! Mike and I took her in for her check-up and she is doing great. She weighed in at 9 lbs 15 oz and 22 inches long. She is still a peanut but considering she was only 2 lbs 15 oz and 15 inches at birth, she has grown quite a bit, 7 lbs and 7 inches!

I am so so blessed to have had the past 4 1/2 months to stay home and be with Allison. I will never ever forget this time we got to spend together. We are so very lucky that my mom is going to watch Allison while I go back to work, I know she is going to be in the best hands! I know how incredibly lucky and blessed we are and I don't want to sound ungrateful in the least, but I am still not ready.

Off to Grandma and Grandpa's House We Went!

We just got home from a little get away to Mike's parents place down in Byron. Allison was very excited to go see her Grandma and Grandpa and Mike and I were excited to see them and get a little skiing in.

It was nice to spend time with Mike's parents and have them get to spend time with Allison. On Wednesday Mike and I went skiing while Grandma and Grandpa watched Allison. They are so great with her, Allison is a lucky lucky girl! Other than that, we didn't do too much while we were down there which was great. It was just nice to relax and spend some time together.

We are still letting Allison sleep through the night if she so chooses. The past 3 nights she did great, she slept until about 6 two of those nights and until 8:00 this morning!!!!! I woke up around 7ish and had to check with Mike to make sure he hadn't fed her, I just couldn't believe it. I think she may be going through a bit of a growth spurt, she is eating more (during the day) and sleeping more. It's nice for me and Mike to get a full nights sleep too!

Monthly Update

I really need to get better at updating our blog, is it too late to make a New Year's Resolution? I will apologize upfront for the long, scattered post I am about to write.

First thing is first, here is Allison on her 3 month birthday. I weighed her on our scale at home and according to that she is 9 lbs. I can't believe she has tripled her birth weight.

We have had a great past month, again amazed by how fast time flies. Allison is doing great and it is so fun watching her reach new "milestones". Because Allison was premature we are suppose to measure her milestones from her due date, not her actual birthday. Here are some of the fun (well, not all of them) changes we have noticed/made...

She started smiling, a milestone I couldn't wait for her to reach :)
She is getting stronger neck control every day
She can stand (with assistance obviously) sometimes for quite some time
She cries!!!!! Here I thought we had a baby on our hands that never cried, she showed us ;) She usually has a fussy period every night. Sometimes it lasts for a short period, other times for hours.
She has become more reactive. She will smile back at us and this has to be my favorite!
She is now sleeping in her nursery
Last night we let her sleep until she woke up to be fed, we put her down around 11 and she slept until 7!!!! We shall see how this continues to go!

Over the past month we have had a couple of other fun events and got to see some friends. My good friend Trang is expecting her first baby in March so I threw her a baby shower with a TON of help from my mom. It was a great time and we are anxiously awaiting Baby Moe's arrival...counting down the days now! Allison can't wait to meet her new friend.

Speaking of Allison's friends, she got to meet a couple over the past month. My friend Nyla had a baby boy a month after I had Allison and we just had the chance to get together. Even though her son Sawyer is a month younger than Allison, he is quite a bit bigger, he is a cutie! We also got to see Jen and her boys Calvin and Graham when we did lunch and a bit of shopping, this was our 2nd time seeing them since Allison came home. Hopefully we will get a chance for another playdate before I go back to work. This past weekend we got to see 2 of my good girlfriends from college, Heidi and Kristi. Kristi had a baby girl, Libby, just a week after I had Allison. Libby and Allison being pretty much the same age I really noticed how small Allison is. Libby just looks so much more mature...Allison will get there though. It was so fun to see those gals and catch up, I wish we could do it more often. I am still kicking myself for not taking pictures during ANY of these get togethers. What was I thinking?!?!

A week ago Mike and I went skiing with my sister and her family while my mom and dad watched Allison. It was fun to get out and ski again, I didn't think I would be able to do that at all this season. Heather's boys were really excited to ski for the 2nd time and they did great. Mike and I can hardly wait until we can get Allison out there, Mike thinks when she's 2...we shall see ;)

My parents watched Allison again this past Friday night while Mike worked and I got together with my high school girlfriends. We got to have some much needed girl talk while enjoying yummy food. It was nice to have a night with the girls and know my baby was being well taken care of.

Tomorrow is Mike's birthday which we don't have any big plans for but on Tuesday we are heading down to Byron. Allison is VERY excited to see Grandma Jan and Grandpa Russ!!! Grandma and Grandpa are going to watch Allison during the day while Mike and I go to a ski demo at Welch. We are SO lucky that our families are so willing to watch our baby girl so mom and dad can enjoy some time together and with friends.

Ok, I think I will leave it at that. I will try and get this updated more often so it isn't so scattered :)

New Home

I am super excited to have found Shutterfly's blog. This can be a one stop shop for all info regarding the Rathlisberger Family, our updates on Allison and all our pictures!

I moved all of our old blog posts and comments from our other blog over here so we don't lose anything. Goodness, rereading our blog from November brought a rush of emotions back. I am so thankful for how everything has worked our for us, we are SO blessed.

It is crazy to think that according to her due date, Allison wouldn't even be here yet. Allison was due on December 24th but she is already 6 1/2 weeks old.

It's been about a month since we've had Allison home and we are loving every minute of it. Allison continues to do great and grow every day. The picture above was taken on Allison's 1 month birthday on 12-6-09. We are going to take the same picture every month on the 6th to show how much she has grown. Today when I was in for my 6 week check-up I had them weigh her, she was up to 6 pounds. Allison is officially out of her preemie diapers and in newborn ones, what a big girl!

We have kept Allison on the same schedule she was on in the hospital with just a little change. We have stretched her night feedings to 4 hours. With this change it means Mike and I get a bit more sleep. We still continue to take turns with those night feedings which is a HUGE help. I am so lucky that Mike helps out with the feedings, I always hear how sleep deprived mothers of newborns are but I feel great. It was nice to know that even with this change (which means one less feeding a day) she still continues to gain weight.

We are really excited with Christmas right around the corner. To get in to the holiday spirit, this past weekend while Mike worked I got together with my mom and sisters to bake cookies. We always have such great intentions of all the cookies we are going to make but chatting always gets in the way. It was Allison's first experience baking cookies, but I can't say she was much help ;) We tried to get her handprint cookie from her but she wouldn't quite cooperate so we had to settle for a footprint. It was a fun day spent with the girls!

Allison is very excited to get to meet a lot of her family members this coming weekend. On Friday we are celebrating Christmas with my family at my sister's house and on Saturday we are celebrating with Mike's family in Cottage Grove. We just hope that the snow that is forcasted doesn't get in the way of everyone travel plans.

Allison on her 2 Month Birthday!

I was talking with a girlfriend today who had her baby girl just a little over a week after Allison and we were discussing how fast the time has gone since we had our baby girls. Everyone always says it but until you experience it for yourself you don't know how true it is. How in the world is Allison already over 2 months old?

We went in this morning for Allison's two month check up and she is a growing girl. Allison is up to 7 lbs, 80z and is 19 3/4 inches long. She still isn't on the charts as far as her height and weight but she has kept on the same curve since she was born, with a preemie that is what they look for so that is just fine. It is still crazy to think that had she been born on her due date she'd only be 3 weeks old!

At the appointment this morning they gave Allison her first set of shots. I was so scared for her, but she took them like a champ which at this point shouldn't be any sort of surprise. She cried for a couple minutes (and it was the first time I saw actual tears from her) but since then she has been great, I hope it continues.

I have continued to enjoy my time off with Allison and I hate to think about going back to work, however...I need to. I miss the people I work with but it is going to be so hard to leave Allison. For those of you who don't know, my mom has offered to watch her while I go back to work. I can't tell you how much of a relief that is. I know that if I can't watch her, the 2nd best thing is to have her with her Grandma! It will be so much easier leaving her in the care of someone I know loves her and will take great care of her!

Not much else is new in the Rathlisberger household. This past week Mike went out of town for a buying show and Allison and I went down and stayed with my parents. It was fun to be back home and spend some time with my mom since she is done working. I think they really enjoyed having Allison there, having me home again...I am not so sure ;)

We still don't have Wiley our pup home with us. Mike's mom was nice enough to come up and get him when I was admitted to the hospital. Ever since then Mike's parent have had him down at their place. Now that Mike is back from his buying show and we are settled in at home, we are excited to get him home. Wiley sure does like attention so we are hoping he will do fine with his little sister. We saw him for Christmas and he did great with her, hopefully that's the case when we get him home.

Every month I get together with my high school girlfriends for dinner. This past month was the first time Allison got to come with. My friend Neenee had a baby boy 9 days before Allison so we had to snap a picture of the two of them together. We have already decided that they will be married when they are older ;)

Here are some of Allison's honorary aunties. These girls have been my best friends since high school and Allison and I couldn't be luckier to have them in our lives.

We hope the beginning of 2010 found you all happy and healthy! We are looking forward to 2010 and all the changes it will bring.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! We couldn't be more thankful this Thanksgiving! We are so SO blessed to be spending our first Thanksgiving as a family home with our beautiful little girl. We are also very thankful to such wonderful family and friends that have been such great support over the past several weeks, we're not sure what we would have done without you all...we love you!

It's official!

Allison Aynne is out of the hospital and home with her mommy and daddy!!!!!

When we first had Allison they told us she would probably have to be in the hospital for 3-4 weeks, she got out in two. They told us they don't usually take babies out of their isolettes until they are 4 lbs because before then it's hard to regulate their temperatures, she was moved when she was still under 3.5lbs. Something tells me we have a pretty incredible, determined little girl on our hands...and we couldn't be more proud.

Our first night at home went great. We are keeping her on the same schedule she was on in the hospital which was feeding her every 3 hours (7, 10, 1 and 4 am and pm). Because she is still so small I am still a little tentative/scared with breastfeeding because I don't know how much milk she is actually getting. For now we decided to bottle feed her my breast milk so we know exactly how much she is eating. Hopefully when she gets a bit bigger we will go back to breastfeeding but right now we just really want to make sure she is eating enough so she can grow.

Allison in sleeping in our bedroom in a bassinet so we can make sure to keep a close eye on her. She never cries although she is kind of a noisy little thing. She makes these grunting sounds that would put a full term baby to shame :) I think Mike and I were both just a bit nervous last night listening to her every sound and making sure she was ok. We decided to take turns with feedings so that we could attempt to get some sleep. You'd be surprised how fast 3 hours goes in the middle of the night.

Allison is still eating great. Sometimes she gets a little tired and can't finish her full bottle but she rallies at her next feeding and slams it, plus more :) They told us at the hospital that if she has a smaller feeding one time it would be ok as long as she makes up for it at the next one so we feel pretty good about her progress there.

On Tuesday we have to take her in to our pediatrician. They keep a pretty close eye on preemies and make sure they are staying on track. We are pretty confident that our little lady is going to be just fine, she has shown us time and time again that she's a little fighter.

We're getting there

Allison continues to do great and impresses everyone with how great she is doing.

I walked in to the nursery yesterday and looked over at Allison's bed and noticed that that she didn't have a top on her isolette. I quickly went over there to make sure it was still Allison's spot and they hadn't moved her or something. Sure enough, I went over there and there she was out in the open air. The nurses came over to talk to me and told me that they were moving her to a bassinet because she was doing such a great job. I couldn't believe we were already to this point. Just yesterday another nurse told me she thought it would be awhile before they did this because they usually do it when a child hits a certain weight, and Allison was a ways from it. Of course Allison was showing off and made the move early...we've got a little fighter on our hands.

When the nurse practitioner made her rounds she also told me that she ordered for the car seat evaluation to be done the next day. It is a two hour test where we bring in our car seat and put Allison in it to make sure that she can still breath in the seat. Because she is so small and car seats aren't necessarily made for tiny babies they just want to make sure she does alright before they send us home. The nurse practitioner said she wanted to get this done because if Allison is ready, she doesn't want the car seat evaluation test to be the thing that keeps her there over the weekend (they only do the test during the week).

So, we are almost there...so close to taking her home with us, Allison just has to prove that she can eat on her own. She is doing great with her feedings and we do really think she is almost there. We are still working on breastfeeding and she is doing great with that and then we do the rest of her feeding through bottle. Sometimes after breastfeeding she gets a little too tired to eat her whole bottle so that is when they use the feeding tube.

It could be a couple days before we're sent home, it could be longer....it's all up to our peanut. If her future is any indication of her past though we think we will have her home really soon.

One Tough Cookie

Allison has been having a couple really great days and we couldn't be happier. Yesterday she was up to 3 lbs, 2.8 oz...little porker :)

On Friday night she had to have a new IV put in but they were having a difficult time finding a spot that would work. Instead of putting a new one in they decided to increase her feedings and test to make sure she handled them well...well, she did great so NO MORE IVs!!!! I can't even tell you how happy I am about that. It is one less thing she is hooked up to and one step closer to getting her home with us.

She is doing great with feedings and eating like a champ. One of the requirements for her to come home is that she has to show she can eat exclusively through bottle or breast. We have been working on breast feeding and she is doing great. I am a little worried about how much she is actually eating when she does that though...a concern I think most 1st time moms probably have. She takes the bottle really well too. The nurses are always really impressed with her every time she finishes a whole bottle (we have a new nurse pretty much every day/shift so little do they know that she almost always takes a whole bottle)! That's ok though, we don't mind our little girl showing off!

Allison is now done with the Bili lights so yesterday we were able to have her out a lot more. We got to hold her from 4 until 9:30 (when we left to go home). It's so hard to just leave her there, I just want to take her and go home and get on with being a family! I know they are taking such good care of her there and I am SO thankful for that...but I just want my little girl home with us!

Another piece of GREAT news is that yesterday when the nurse practitioner was doing her rounds we asked what she thought as far as timing went for Allison to come home. She thought maybe only a week! A week?!?!?! I am trying not to get my hopes up (too late) but I would be SOOOO thrilled if we got to take her home with us in a week. It will feel amazing to finally be home and start our new lives together as a family of 3!

Allison is doing great and continues to impress us all. We have one tough cookie on our hands.

Growing Girl

Our little princess is doing great! She is a growing girl now up a little past 3 lbs. Ok, 3 lbs doesn't sound like a lot but compared to 2 lbs 15 oz, it sounds like a ton to us!

Allison is in the Special Care Nursery at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Believe it or not, she is the biggest baby in the room. All the nurses are really impressed with how great she is doing. One of the nurses said that Allison doesn't even know how small she is because she acts like a big girl.

I have been spending my days at the hospital with Allison. Because of my surgery I am not able to drive so my family has been absolutely wonderful in making sure that I get to be with my peanut. Mike has had to go back to work but he comes down on the evenings when he gets done early enough so he can see his princess.

Yesterday Allison had to go back under the photo therapy light because her bilirubin levels were back up. I am sure she doesn't mind the light but I am ready for her to be done with that. Hopefully it is just a day or two more of that. Later today Allison will be able to get her IVs taken out and we are so excited. As her feedings have gone up, the fluids she has been getting through the IVs has been coming down. She will be up to enough milk that she won't have to be on any IVs. Every day that I have been in there they have had to change out the IV and find a new spot, in her hand, feet, head...wherever they can. I am sure she will love not having to be poked and prodded so much.

We haven't gotten any further word about how much longer they think Allison will stay in the Special Care Nursery but we would guess at least another week or two. She is doing great, she just needs to continue to grow!

Peaunut Update

Allison is doing great, gaining weight little by little...but we will get there.

Exciting news yesterday was that she took my milk through a bottle. They had said they would be putting a feeding tube in (and they probably will still have to) but for yesterday she took the milk like a big girl. The bottle was about half the size of her and the nipple filled her whole mouth but she did such a great job.

I have gotten to do kangaroo care with her a couple times which I think does more for me than it does her, it just gives me such peace to be so close with her. They lay her on my chest skin to skin and I just get to soak her up. I love hearing her little squeaks and the sounds she makes.

Mike and I are heading down there today and I am excited for him to get a chance to feed her and give her the kangaroo care. I am pretty sure that little Miss Allison already has her daddy wrapped around her little fingers.

Mike and I just want to thank everyone so much for their love and support over the past week. We can't even begin to explain to you how much it has meant to us.

I also just want to thank Mike for everything he is doing to keep me going strong. I haven't quite been myself but he has been my rock. He has taken on so much the past couple days and I can't even tell you how much I love him for that. I really wouldn't have gotten through these past couple days without his love and support!

Helps you see what you have and him to know what it means. I can't tell you how happy I am that Allison is doing so well. Baby Rathlisberger Is Here

Where to even begin? Well, we thought we were on our way home yesterday to buy us a couple more weeks of bed rest. Our doctor was actually on his way over to discharge me while the nurse was running one last set of vitals (checking my blood pressure and the baby's heart beat). All of a sudden, the baby started to have drops in their heartbeat and before I even knew what was happening I was hooked up to an IV and put on oxygen. Our doctor quickly came and explained to me that he was going to consult with another doctor but it appeared as though we would be delivering the baby right away. I was by myself at the time and I don't think I have ever been so scared. Thankfully I was able to get in contact with Mike quickly and he jumped in his car and was on his way. As I was being wheeled out for my c-section, Mike got there...I have never been so excited to see him.

Before going in to surgery they explained to us that because of the size of the baby, it was going to need to go down to Children's Hospital where they have a NICU. They had a team coming in from Children's so they could transport the baby down as soon as it was stable. They didn't want to risk transferring me down there for my c-section because they thought it best to get the baby out as soon as possible. As much as this broke my heart, I knew it was what needed to be done...I just wanted my baby to be safe.

The c-section went great and before we knew it we heard "It's a girl" and not even seconds later we heard the most beautiful cry. She came out breathing on her own and was able to cry right away. Instantly everyone was telling us how great she was looking and reassuring us. Mike was able to go over and see her and came back to tell me that she looked great.

Our baby girl is small, but boy does she have spunk. She tested great on all her tests and everyone was so impressed. We got a great piece of news when they told us that although she still had to go down to Children's, she didn't have to go to the NICU, they were just going to bring her to the Special Care Nursery. I did get a chance to see the little peanut before they took her and although she was tiny, she looked perfect. By the time they wheeled her out a lot of my family was there too so my mom, dad and both sisters were able to see her before she left.

Allison Aynne Rathlisberger was born at 5:58 p.m. on Nov 6th, 2009 weighing in at 2 pounds 15 ounces and is 15 inches long.

Mike went down to Children's last night to check on his little girl and meet with his mom and dad so they could see their 1st grandchild. We called right away at 6 this morning and they called her the "Blue Ribbon Baby". She still hasn't needed any help in breathing and she is impressing everyone. They keep saying that she is mature like an older baby, just small.

It is harder than I would ever have imagined not being in the same place as her. I hope to recover quickly and get down there as soon as I can. Because of her size they think she will be in there for 3-4 weeks, they just want to make sure she is strong enough before they let her go.

We really feel like the way everything worked out last night was a miracle. We were so blessed that we hadn't been released yet from the hospital and they caught that the baby was in distress. Everyone here and at Children's has been amazing and we are so greatful to everyone that was here for us and our sweet daughter!

Too good to be true

My perfect pregnancy, well it must have been too good to be true. No worries though, everyone is still fine, we just hit a little bump in the road.

I thought I would send a little update to let everyone know what was going and so I could fill everyone in.

I went in to my clinic on Monday morning for my routine check up. At that point I was just under 33 weeks along. Well, the first thing they do is check my blood pressure and I could tell right away that they didn't like the results. They tested, retested, and retested again and the results weren't looking any better. I met with my midwife and she decided that it would be best to have me go on bed rest for a couple days and run some tests. She also decided at that point that as a midwife, it would be best to pass my care over to a doctor. We ran some tests and she sent me home with orders to stay in bed. We then scheduled an appointment for Wednesday with the doctor I had seen a couple times for my ultrasounds, at that point all my test results would be back and we could figure out what the next steps would be.

For the next 2 days I stayed in bed. One wouldn't think it would be that bad but man o man, by day 1 1/2 I was so bored. And honestly, I have no problem sitting at home doing nothing all day but I think the thought of having to do this for the next 7+ weeks was a little daunting. A little daunting yes, but something I would be willing to do to keep my baby growing until it was further along.

Wednesday morning Mike and I went to the clinic and waited (not so patiently) to meet with our new doctor. His nurse came to get us and we could tell pretty quickly that the news we were about to get wasn't going to be the greatest. She took my blood pressure and again, it was too high. She had me lay down for awhile and tested it again and although it went down, it was still too high. The doctor then came in to see us and almost immediately told us that I was going to be admitted to the hospital right away because I had preeclampsia. Not only do I have high blood pressure but my tests showed that I had protein in my urine. Wow, being admitted to the hospital wasn't even on our radar of possible outcomes?!?!

The doctor went on to tell us several of the possibilities of what the next couple days may look like. 1st thing is that they wanted to get me shots of cortisone to help develop the baby's lungs in case it does come too early. There was/is talk of sending me down to Abbott in case I do need to deliver because they have a NICU there for the baby. For now though, I just needed to be admitted so they could keep a close eye on my blood pressure and they could continue to run labs and watch my protein levels.

As of now, things are looking pretty good. Lying down has helped my blood pressure quite a bit. It does go up and down and isn't quite stable but at least it appears to be easy enough to get down. The nurse had me sit in a chair after using the restroom to test how it would be sitting up and unfortunately, it spiked pretty high so it was back in bed for me. The doctor came back to see us at the end of the day and he seemed pretty hopeful. He was going to chat with some other doctors at a couple other hospitals and give them my info as well as continue to watch my BP and labs. He thinks that if it continues to look like it has, he could possibly send me home and hopes to buy us a couple more weeks.

Surprisingly, I have stayed pretty calm and haven't let myself freak out. The staff here has been great about telling me the complications we could face if the baby had to be delivered at 33 weeks and although not ideal, everything would be just fine. We aren't going to have to worry about that though because we are going to keep this baby cooking for as long as we can :)

So there it is! After 33 weeks of such an easy pregnancy we have hit a little bump in the road. I still have faith that everything is going to be great and we are going to have a beautiful baby in our arms...just maybe a little sooner rather than later, but let's hope for later!

Quick Update

Quick Update

I thought I would do just a quick update since we had our doctors appointment. Mike and I went in for our 28 week appointment (which was really when I was 29 weeks along) and got to do another ultrasound. They wanted to rule out Placenta Previa since they couldn't tell at my 20 week ultrasound. Good news was that they were able to do that, doesn't look like I am at any risk. Unfortunately we didn't get any pictures at this ultrasound. We did get to see hair on top of the baby's head though, that was fun to see. As of the appointment our baby was 2.9 lbs. It was measuring around 27 weeks which the doctor told us just meant that our baby was on the small side, it doesn't push back our due date any further. As long as the baby is healthy, I am quite alright with it being on the smaller side....easier when it comes to giving birth :)

We are still getting our house ready for the new arrival. I feel like we have a pretty good handle on things but I am not quite sure we will ever be 100% prepared. This weekend Mike and I tackled the garage. We got that cleaned out and things organized so we had more room for things the baby will need...not to mention room so we can open the car doors to get the baby out of the car :)!

Mike and I also started our baby classes. Tomorrow will be our 3rd week. Last week we got to tour the birthing center and see where we will deliver so that was fun. The classes have been pretty good however part of me feels like I should have stayed blissfully ignorant on the whole topic of the actual birth. We watched both a birthing video and a video on a c-section and I think both Mike and I were in a bit of shock. It is something I know we have to go through but I don't want to think too much about. It is still good to get all the information though!

This weekend I have my first baby shower and I am so excited. My great friends Mandy and Trang are planning it for me and I can't wait to see what they have in store. I still don't feel like I am pregnant enough to be having a baby shower but we are just over 2 months away now...crazy!

I suppose that was a little longer than a "quick update"...I guess I had more to tell than I thought.

Where Does Time Go?

3 years ago today Mike and I got married on the most beautiful fall day we could have asked for. What a special day it was, beautiful weather surrounded by our family and friends...we couldn't have been happier!

I can't say that our lives have changed very much in the past 3 years but oh how they will in the next 3!

Baby Rath's Nursery

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. I was going to update once we had the nursery all put together which I thought was going to be a couple weeks ago. To make a long story short, we had a little bit of a fiasco with the crib. One of the pieces was damaged so they had to order in a new one and that took longer than anticipated. Excuses excuses....but here I am now updating our blog :)

The pregnancy is still going great. I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have had such an easy pregnancy thus far (let's hope it continues). We are now about 26 1/2 weeks along so the 2nd trimester is coming to an end! I just can not believe how fast it is going. The baby is getting stronger and stronger every day...I can tell from the kicks. The other night while we were lying in bed the baby was pretty active so Mike got to feel the kicks for the first time. I think it was a pretty neat experience for him.

We have our next doctor's appointment on Oct 8th where we will again get to see the baby with an ultrasound. At our 20 week appointment they couldn't get a good enough view of things so the doctor wanted me to come back in 2 months to rule out placenta previa. At my last appointment I spoke with the midwife about it and she said it is just a precaution and she really didn't think it'd be an issue but it's better to be safe than sorry. More than anything I am just excited to get another chance to see the baby. I would assume this will be our last ultrasound so it will be fun to see the baby again and see how much it has grown.

This weekend Mike had his last day off for quite some time. We were able to take advantage of that and get more baby stuff done. The headboard to the crib came in so we went to go pick that up. While we were down in the area we also registered at Target. We had previously registered at Babies R Us, but wanted to do Target as well. It is amazing all the things babies need. Not sure where we are going to put everything?!?! Thank goodness my sister Heather came with us to register at Babies R Us. Mike and I had no idea what we were doing. It was great to have someone come along that had the experience of 3 children under her belt...she knew what we needed and what we could skip. I really recommend to anyone that registers, bring along someone who knows what they're doing...it helps out tremendously.

After we were done with our errands in the cities we headed home and got to work on the crib and finishing up the nursery. This was just another step in the whole process that makes it seem more and more real. I love the way the nursery turned out! Thank you to everyone who made it possible, Jan and Russ for painting for us and buying the furniture, thanks to Mike for putting everything together, thank you to my mom for buying us all of the baby's bedding and thank you to The Baby Fairy for already filling the baby's dresser with tons of clothes, books, blankets, etc. This baby is so blessed to have you all in their life!

New Due Date

Mike and I had our 20 week appointment on Tuesday. We were so excited for this appointment because we knew it meant we got another sneak peak at our little one.

We met with our midwife first and she listened for the heart beat and said everything sounded good. Then we were on to the fun part, the ultrasound. I was a little paranoid for the ultrasound because I really did not want to find out the sex of the baby. I was scared that we would either see something or the doctor would say "he" or "she" and the surprise would be ruined. My paranoia was quickly put to rest when I realized that I couldn't tell what half the things were on the ultrasound! At one point I did say to the doctor "now we don't want to know what the baby is, but do you know?". He told me that it usually takes some effort to figure it out so if the parents don't want to know, he doesn't even look. So the surprise is still there for us, will it be a baby boy or baby girl?

During the ultrasound we did find out that our due date was wrong. We originally thought it was December 18th but due to the measurements of the baby our new due date is December 24th.

The doctor said everything else looked great and we had one good looking baby (and I am sure that isn't something he tells everyone...he saves it for the really good looking ones!).

It's Coming Together

It's Coming Together

Mike and I had a wonderfully productive weekend getting ready for our baby! It seems like every step along this process makes the fact that we are having a baby even more and more real. This weekend was a big step, we started working on the baby's room.

It is very rare that Mike gets to take a weekend away from the store but we knew we needed a weekend dedicated to getting things done around the house so he was able to get away. He was home early Friday and we were able to get an early start on things. In starting to get things cleaned out we realized how amazing it was that we could accumulate so much stuff in such a short period of time. Thankfully one of my good friends was having a garage sale and she was nice enough to let us unload some of our stuff with her to sell. That was such a huge help in clearing up some space, had it not been for the garage sale...not sure what we would have done.

On Saturday we did get to take a break and head to Mike's cousin's house. His cousin Justin has been over in Japan for the last couple years teaching English. He was home for a short period of time so they threw a party and we got a chance to see him. He seems to be doing great over there, I know the family hopes that he comes back to the US soon though :).

On our way home from the party Mike and I stopped by Babies R Us so we could look at nursery furniture. Usually Mike and I are not the most decisive people in the world. Some nights it takes us 20 minutes or more just to figure out what we want for dinner. We were pretty lucky though and within minutes we found a crib and dresser we both loved and agreed on. Mike's parents offered to buy that for us as a gift and we can't thank them enough! On top of the crib and dresser, we also found a chair/ottoman set that we agreed on so we got that too.

When we got back home we got back to work. We previously had both a guest room and an office but with the baby coming we obviously needed to make room for a nursery. We decided to turn our office in to the office/guest bedroom and then that left the other room for the nursery. In getting everything out of one room and put in the other our house was quite the disaster zone. Several times I would take a look around and wonder how in the world we were ever going to finish.

By the end of the weekend, we some how managed to get done what we set out to do. We now have an empty room which we can't wait to fill with stuff for the baby. Because of our much too generous Baby Fairy (which we have still been getting gifts from) we already have clothes, toys, books, etc that will finally have a place in the room. Next weekend Mike's parents are coming to paint (again, we can't thank them enough) and within 2 weeks our baby's furniture will be in. I can't believe how fast it is all coming together. Now we just need to wait until December to get here so we can add the most important part! :)

The Baby Fairy

Have any of you ever heard of the Baby Fairy? Baby Fairy, are you reading this?

A couple weeks ago I got home and checked our mail. In the mailbox was a package addressed to me and Mike. Inside the package was a cute little ducky sleeper with a card signed "The Baby Fairy". Mike and I looked where it was postmarked from but it was some city in WI that neither of us had heard of, and where we knew no one.

Still having no idea who was behind this wonderful gift I got home from work last Thursday and on my driveway was a brown paper bag with a piece of paper on it that said "Holli". Inside were a bunch of goodies; hats, receiving blankets, and sleepers! Along with the gifts there was a card just as anonymous as the last, this time signed "Your Baby Fairy".

What fun surprises! One gift sent from WI, the other hand delivered to my driveway! Baby Fairy, who are you? I sure do hope that we get to find out who you are at some point. For the time being though, it is fun to guess and wonder!

As far as how I am feeling and how the baby is doing...great! I am 19 weeks as of today and I really couldn't ask to feel any better. I feel so lucky to have such an easy pregnancy so far. I am still not showing but I have found it much harder to suck it in, I think I may pop any day now! We have our 20 week appointment on August 4th. We will get another ultrasound that day so we are excited to see how much the baby has grown since the last time we got to see. Stay tuned for pictures!

Quick Update

Quick update

I had a doctor's appointment this morning and everything looked great. It was a quick appointment, pretty much just to check on the placement of the baby and hear the heart beat.

The doctor said the placement was right where it should be for 16 weeks. She used the Doppler machine to find the heart beat and we could hear it right away. We kept hearing these flutters and the doctor told me it was the baby kicking away, so that was fun to hear. She said in the next the next month I could potentially start feeling those kicks.

My next appointment will at 20 weeks, so another month. At that point we will get another ultrasound and hopefully get some good pictures of the baby!

Boy or Girl?

Every week I get sent updates on what exactly is happening with the baby and how it is developing. Today I read that if I were to get an ultrasound, there is a chance that we could find out the sex of the baby. With that being said though, we are keeping it a surprise. A surprise for me and Mike and therefore a surprise for the rest of you!

Being surprised with the sex is a personal decision we made before we even got pregnant. Mike and I both decided that we would want to wait to find out what we're having. Funny thing though, when we found out we were pregnant...Mike said he wanted to find out! Thankfully (for both of us..there could have been fights) he has since changed his mind back to wanting to be surprised.

I love when other people find out, in fact, I tried to convince my sister to find out what she was having when she was pregnant with her third child...she didn't listen to me though :) For us, I just really want the surprise of hearing "it's a boy" or "it's a girl" in the delivery room.

People have asked if I have a preference on what the sex is, and to be 100% honest, I really don't. In my perfect, ideal world...I would love to have a boy, girl, girl (in that order). But seeing as we have zero control over that, oh and not to mention Mike only wants two children, we will just be happy to have a happy and healthy baby, that is all that is really important.

Still Can't Believe It!

Mike and I had our first official doctors appointment a few days ago. We were excited because I was told that we would get to hear the baby's heartbeat at this appointment. The pregnancy hadn't felt real yet but I thought hearing the baby's heartbeat would really make it set in that Mike and I are having a baby!

Our doctors appointment went great. I decided to switch from an OBGYN to a Midwife. I wasn't 100% comfortable with the OBGYN that I had seen so I thought I would give the Midwife a try. She was great, she really seemed like she was there for us and we weren't just another patient. She attempted to find the baby's heartbeat with a Doppler machine but warned me ahead of time that at that point it may take awhile to find it (because I was just under 11 weeks along). Unfortunately, she was not able to find the heartbeat with the Doppler so she got me in for an ultrasound.

The ultrasound went great, it took seconds and there it was, there was really a baby growing in there! ;) It was surreal to see the baby and hear its little heart beating.

Here are the pictures we got from the ultrasound. In the pictures, the baby's head is on the left, looking right at the camera. I think the best one is on the top left.

I am still feeling pretty good, although there have been moments here and there where I don't feel the best. I am not complaining though, I know how tough a lot of people have it. I am just happy to know that the baby is healthy!

At the end of this week I will officially be done with the first trimester. I can't believe how fast the time is already going....it's going to be December before we know it.

Happy Mother's Day

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day.

Mike and I were very excited that we got to see both of our moms this past weekend as well as share our exciting new with Mike's parents.

Mike and I got to Byron on Saturday night and we were sitting around chatting. We had purchased a doggy shirt for Wiley that said "I am going to be a big brother" and so Mike had to get that on him. Mike snuck in to the bedroom with Wiley so he could get the shirt on and surprise his parents. Wiley ran out to the room where we were sitting and Russ and Jan were both wondering what was going. At first they asked "are you guys getting another dog?" When we answered no, I think it sunk in what we were trying to tell them.

Mike's parents were both really excited but I think in shock. We asked if they had any idea and they didn't...so it was fun to be able to 100% surprise them.

Mike and I are very lucky to have such supportive parents and we know our children are going to be so lucky to have the Grandparents they do.

8 Weeks

8 Weeks

8 weeks today and still feeling great! I should probably knock on wood but so far I am feeling wonderful. I haven't had any morning sickness and the tiredness that I was feeling a couple weeks ago is pretty much gone. The only thing I have started to notice is that I am becoming a bit more emotional. I actually have to laugh at myself because the smallest little things will send me in to tears. Oh well, that's normal right? :)

I am very excited for this weekend! We are finally going to share the news with Mike's parents. We haven't been able to tell them yet because we wanted to do it in person. I honestly have no idea if they suspect anything. Mike thinks his mom may have an idea because she always asks "is anything else new?" like she knows there is, but I think he's just being suspicious ;) They have been great in the fact that they have never asked us when we were going to give them a grandchild so I really am not sure if it is even on their radar. I guess we will find out on Saturday!

December 18th!

December 18th!

I just got back from the doctor and found out that my official due date is December 18th, 2009!

So far I have been feeling great, just a few symptoms here and there. The doctor did say though that the morning sickness usually starts around 6 weeks, I will be 6 weeks on Friday. Hopefully I will be one of the lucky ones and be spared the morning sickness!

Mike and I will go in for our first offical doctors visit in about a month. At that point we have our first ultrasound and we will hopefully get to hear the baby's heartbeat.

We decided before we got pregnant that the sex of our baby would be a surprise. One of the few real surprises we can give ourselves. Of course, since finding out we are pregnant Mike said he wants to find out :) I am going to have to stand my ground here though. I just really want the surprise of hearing the doctor say "It's a ____"!

Getting our due date today made the whole thing feel a bit more real. I am looking forward to some other milestones like getting our first ultrasound, hearing the heartbeat, starting to show, feeling the baby move...all of the steps along the way will make this whole thing actually seem real to me, cause at this point I still can't quite believe it.

Baby Rathlisberger is on the way!

Mike and I have been talking about starting our family for some time now. We came up with a perfect plan in our head, but things don't always work according to plan....

If you know me, you know that I am not the most patient person. Even though we had come up with a plan, I just couldn't wait. Mike and I decided that we would try to add to our family a little sooner than we had discussed. After all...we knew most people weren't lucky enough to get their wish the first time.

I decided that I was going to take a pregnancy test on Friday, April 10th. I knew it was still a little early, but I just couldn't wait. On Monday of that week, I went to the store and purchased my first home pregnancy test (a package of 4 to be exact). Well, my lack of patience reared it's ugly head again and I decided to take a test on Wednesday, April 8th. I justified it to myself as "practice".

I took the test and was shocked when I saw a faint 2nd pink line appear. "No, that couldn't be" I told myself. After spending hours online I found that most people said no matter how faint the line...it means you're pregnant. It was so hard not scream it from the rooftop but Mike was out of town for the night and of course I wanted to share the news with him before anyone else. Still not quite believing what I saw the night before, I decided to take test #2 on Thursday, April 9th. Just like the night before, a 2nd pink line appeared. Only this time, the line was a little darker.

I waited patiently (I know, hard to believe) for Mike to get home that night. He got home and I ran upstairs to go get the tests. Even after seeing the 2 pink lines, I don't think Mike could quite believe it. And to be 100% honest, I didn't either. In my package of 4 tests, one was digital. The result was plain and simple...either a "Yes +" or a "No -"! I decided that just to be 200% sure, I would take that test in the morning.

I was so excited to take the test the next morning that I woke up really early and just laid there until Mike finally woke up. I took the test and went back to the bedroom with Mike to wait for the results. We both sat there staring at the test for what seemed like hours as the clock on the test blinked. Before our very eyes, the answer we were waiting for popped up on the screen "YES+"!

Mike and I are so excited for the journey ahead of us, we can't wait to become parents.

Baby Rath
When I was pregnant we referred to Allison as Baby Rath since we didn't know if she was a boy or girl and we didn't have a name picked out.

During my pregnancy I was receiving gifts from a Baby Fairy. Every week a gift would show up from an anonymous sender. I later found out that my sister had organized the whole thing. Every week a different family member or friend had sent me a gift.

This gift was from my Baby Fairy Trang.
