Dictation

We have started dictation along with our spelling tests.  Dictation is when I read a sentence comprised of that weeks spelling words.  On the back of their Spelling test, they will write the sentence that I read out loud to them.  I will read it 3 times.  Points are taken from punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.  If points are taken off, then retake will be on Friday.  This will be a different sentence.  To prepare for dictation, you can make up sentences using the spelling words and read it to your child.  Have them practice using capitals in the beginning of sentences and proper nouns.  Also using finger spaces and correct punctuation at the end of sentences.

Welcome Back!

Hello Parents!

I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Holiday Break.  The weather was amazing and gave the kids time to play outside!  Now it is time to get back to a schedule.  Sometimes this can be hard for some of us.  What I will do is use this return week as a review/catch-up week.  This will give us time to return back to our schedule and back to our classroom environment.  There will not be any spelling words for this week, but I will continue with math.  We will use the first couple of return days to review math concepts that I was teaching before break.  Then continue on with new lessons later on in the week.  Please make sure your child brings back their bag-of-books as I will be looking at these and hearing them read for me.  Thank you so much for your help!  Happy New Year!

Thursday Christmas Party

Hello Parents!

On Thursday, we will be having a Holiday Party for part of the day in our class.  Your child may bring any snacks for this day that he/she will like to share with the rest of the class.  I will be bringing in a movie and some snacks.

Copy of Gingerbread House Letter

Student Name: _____________________________

Dear Parents and Guardians,

For a winter project this year, we will be reading the story The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett, and then we will build our very own gingerbread house!  In order to do this fun project, I am asking that we help buy the supplies needed for the houses.  Every student will be assigned an item to bring to class.  Please bring these items as soon as possible and no later than Monday, December 12th.  Please buy generic items whenever possible.  Dollar General offers a lot of 99 cent options.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Please bring in the assigned highlighted item below:

Ø  2 cans of generic white icing

Ø  a bag of small stick pretzels

Ø  2 bags of gum drops

Ø  2 bags of red-hots

Ø  a bag of mini candy canes

Ø  a bag of black licorice

Ø  a bag of red licorice

Ø  2 boxes of graham crackers

Ø  a bag of colored Life Savers or a box of generic Fruit Loops

Ø  a bag of round peppermint candies

Ø  a box of generic Cookie Crunch cereal

Ø  a box of generic Fruity Pebbles (rainbow colors)

Thank you!

Mrs.  Reaves

Bag-of-Books

Hello Parents!

Your child's bag-of-books will be an important part of their daily homework.  When I return, I will organize their bags, assign new books, and assign new flash cards.  They should have real books and paper books in their bags.  The paper books are theirs to keep and should be reviewed.  Their real books are books that are on loan.  Please have them read these several times.  I will collect them when I feel they have mastered them.  These books will be at their level.  As your child's reading improves, new leveled books will come home.

Changes

Hello Parents!

I just want to thank Mrs. Sandy Fahlberg for doing such a great job teaching 2nd grade!  I was hoping to have the class for at least a couple of days before I had my son, but he decided to show up and surprise us all!  Sandy came in and took hold of my class the best she could.  I could not have done it without her.
Now that she has moved on to another teacher in need, we will be having Mrs. Jan Charrlin and Pat Chadwell come in to cover the rest of my maternity leave.  With that, there will be changes and adjustments until I return.  I will return on November 23rd.  Many things will change in the classroom and some things will change for homework.  It will be hard work for both the students and myself, but I am sure we can make it through with patience.  I will try to make it as easy as possible.  I will start having my subs make those gradual changes for me so that when I come back, it will not be that scary for the students.
I thank you very much for your patience and help!

Copy of Classroom Letter to Parents

August 24, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am excited to begin what promises to be an interesting and exciting school year.  I believe that close communication is essential to the success of our students.  I appreciate any help from parents that will benefit the needs of our students.  Volunteers are always welcome!  Please contact the main office at 763-5012 if you are interested in volunteering in our classroom.  I believe that together, we can create a classroom community that is safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

There will be many things you need to be aware of for the beginning of the school year.  Spelling lists will be sent home on Mondays.  Tests will be given on Thursdays with a retake if needed on Fridays.  Vocabulary calendars will be sent home at the beginning of the month.  This calendar will also have the lunch schedule on the opposite side.

In the vocabulary calendar, you will see that there is a word for each of the school days.  The word will be due on that day.  For the word, your child must look up its definition, part of speech, and a meaningful sentence showing correct usage of the word.  In class, we discuss the definition(s) of each word daily, along with illustrating each word, using concrete objects (if possible), and writing sentences together as a large group.

I will also have a class website that will have important information to help your child through the school year.  My website is: http://reaves2ndgrade.shutterfly.com/

Discipline Plan

The following will be the discipline plan used in my classroom.  These rules will be discussed thoroughly with the class so that each student has a firm understanding of what is expected of them.

There will be fair consequences if rules are broken.  Below are the basic consequences, but other consequences can also be given depending on the teacher and infraction.

There will be rewards for consistent positive behavior.  The following are examples of rewards that students can receive:

I know that with your help and cooperation, your child will have a very fulfilling, rewarding, and productive school year.  If you need to contact me, you can:

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lourdes Reaves

DAWG Books

DAWG books or Daily Attention Works Great is our way of keeping organized in the classroom.  It will go home every night and come back every morning.  This is a great way to send information home, have things signed and returned, keep homework, calendar books, and math folder.  Please make sure that these come back daily to class so that I can check them.
