I have launched River Marine Outfitters, a small independent Fly Fishing outfitter based here in Manistee, with the goal of providing the best possible guide service in NW Michigan.
By doing this, I am able to utilize my affiliations with The Northern Angler fly shop in Traverse City, Michigan while simultaneously, maintaining my freedom to implement my own program. What does this mean to you? Simply put everything. First of all, the days of hidden costs associated with a day on the river are gone, everything but your fishing license is included: flies, tippets, leaders, lunches, transportation, and gear everything. You will not be given a fly bill, you will not pay for rental gear, you will not pay for shuttles, and you will only pay for the guide day. That is it. End of story.
Quality control, There is no shortage of fishing guides in Michigan, but only a select few have made my very short list. River Marine Outfitters is small, and I will keep it that way, in the event that I am booked, I have chosen the best guides in our area to represent me and my company. If the guides I work with are booked, I cannot and will not take your reservation. I will never put you with a boat jockey or in a boat with a guide that I would not hire myself.
More freedom and flexibility. Because River Marine Outfitters is not tied to a particular shop or "brick and mortar" location, we have the freedom to truly customize any itinerary, whether it be a day trip out of Manistee, or perhaps a road trip adventure. We can plan a trip to maximize your fishing and minimize the headaches that come with planning such a trip. We have unlimited possibilities within a short drive from our headquarters in Manistee, with most of our destinations within 45 minutes from downtown, and numerous others a bit further away. Two days on the Manistee, a day on the betsie, and then a day on the upper Manistee? Not a problem. You no longer have to try and work around guide schedules for different rivers and different parts of the state. Our knowledge, experience, and willingness to travel, guarantees that you will be in the right place at the right time.
Further more; I will be happy to assist with lodging suggestions, restaurants, places of interest, and non-angling activities along the way.
Thank you for visiting our site. We are a fly fishing guide service in North West Michigan, spending most of our time on the Big Manistee River.
Margy and I hope we have met all your expectations and you will come back and fish again. Thanks
Captain Bill

A fishing guide is a person who is not tied to his own agenda, but a person whose purpose is to give you the best fishing experience possible.
Captain Bill Boynton
Bill's father introduced him to fly fishing as a young boy in Florida.
Bill and Marg spend winters in Florida where Bill guides for red fish and sea trout.
Bill graduated from Sea School in Bayou La Batre, Alabama for his US Coast Guard License and has received training at the Marine Survival Training Center at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. The training included Offshore Survival. Bill is a Huron-Manistee National Forest Outfitter guide, Michigan DNR licensed, and a Michigan River Guides Association member. His captain's license has expanded his guiding to the US Coast Guard waters of the lower Big Manistee River, as well as other international waters. Bill is ready to fish carp on the TC bay or cast streamers for salmon in the fall.
He says, "There's just no greater thrill than watching a trophy fish be released to be caught again!"

Seasons at a Glance
September Salmon time and we get great runs of kings. These are big strong fish that will test your fish fighting skills. We primarily get Chinook or king salmon that start to show up in late August and by September 1st there are plenty of fish in the system. We also get a run of Coho salmon that start to show in the last half of the month.
Get out the Winston BII MX 9 wt. with a 35 gr. sink tip and BEND the WINNY. Be careful this is very addicting.
October Autumn is all about chrome cart wheeling steelhead. They are chewing on salmon eggs as there is a massive king salmon spawn happening at this time. The Manistee has as many migratory fish in it as it will see all year.
November & December This is my favorite two months of the year.
Swinging flies on the Bll X 12' 6'' Winston spey rod for steelhead. This as good as it will be for the season and my primary tactic is fishing spey rods and swinging large wet flies, leeches and sculpins. The brown trout fishing is also very good during this period as they love streamers and we even get some big migratory lake run browns that come in from Lake Michigan.
January, February & March Winter time is all about Redfish in Homosassa, Florida . I pole my flats skiff stalking reds and anything with scales. Damn now that’s fun.
April this can be the peek of the spring steelhead season. The smaller rivers will get their steelhead around March 1st and the big rivers such as the Manistee start about 3-4 weeks later. Eggs, nymphs and streamer all have their place during this period. There is more steelhead in the river during this season then at any other time of the year.
May thru August May is transition time from steelhead to trout. We get GREAT mid day insect hatches and some late running steelhead in May. From then on out it is trout season in all its glory. Dry flies, wet flies, and streamers all get a chance to shine.
