Our Trees
Our Trees
When Rob & I lived on the farm we planted about 75 trees.  That year an infestation of rodents called Voles decimated almost all of them.  These two willows are the sole survivors.  Rob and I are going to erect some kind of monument to our battle with the voles underneath them.

Latest news

Nov. 2011-Jan. 2012

I guess it's time for an update.  It's been 3 months and there hasn't been much time for picture taking.  November and December were filled with fun family parties and a lot of cousin time.  This was good for the kids because we decided to go house hunting and we found the one so there was a lot of work to be done.  We moved to Ogden just after Christmas.  It was a little hard on the kids to switch schools mid-year but they are adapting well and making friends quickly.

We had a great Christmas despite how hectic it was.  Mel got a barbie Jet, Matthew got a really cool remote control car, and Alex (who kept telling us he wanted nothing!) was happy to see a toy car set under the tree for him.  The favorite toy was a cheap plastic kick boxing game Rob picked up at the dollar store.  So, it broke when Alex got a little rough with it but I think we can repair it with a little super glue.

January was a lot of settling in and unpacking boxes.  All of this was made a little more difficult with the fact that Gina is expecting baby number four and as Rob so sensitively puts it, "Gina doesn't handle pregnancy well."

We are due around July 21st so this puts a damper on our annual Bear Lake trip.  We'll try to find a way to at least get Mel and Matthew there.

The last ultrasound the doc said he thinks it's a boy. This did not make Mel very happy but she's a trooper.  The boys are both ecstatic.

We've also spent the better part of the last two months potty training Alex. He's getting really good at it as long as we let him run around with his pants off. You can see the problem this would cause in public.  As soon as we put the pants back on he has an accident. He's making progress mostly through bribery. Hot Wheels work the best.

We also got to bring our cat Toby home from Rob's parents house. Steven took great care of him and Toby comes running every time he visits.  Toby is glad to be king of his own castle though.  He didn't like like their other cats very much and I'm afraid he wasn't very nice to them.  We also owe Steven and Margaret about a million dollars to pay for all the canned food he ate.  Their cats are older and need softer food.  Toby got a little addicted to the patte style food and got so fat we started calling him Tubby. Once he couldn't steal Whitey's food anymore he slimmed right down. Don't get us wrong, he's still an enormous Tom cat.

The boys are happy he's here but Toby spends most of his time avoiding them.  He comes to Mel a little more but she's been tormenting him so much lately he avoids her too.  And she wonders why he won't come into her bedroom.

Rob's as busy as ever and loving his job, except when he doesn't. He loves the clinic he works for. Sometimes it can get pretty busy and a little exhausting but for the most part it's pretty routine.

We are all very blessed. Thanks to everyone who has helped us through all of the transitions.  We have a great family and friends.

Sept. and Oct. 2011

So I got a little behind but we had a busy couple of months. Here is the news from September and October.

1st and most important was Matthew's 6th birthday.  We had a Mario Kart party and invited a few friends over.  The boys played some games out side in Mario World and then went in to do some Mario Kart races.  Matthew was the hands down winner. Matthew loved his party and later that evening we had cake and ice cream with his Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen who brought him some clothes and candy, Grandma and Grandpa Gunnell who gave him some cold hard cash, and Uncle Blake, Aunt Sheri and his cousins Kent and Krysten who gave him a light saber (his favorite present). Happy Birthday Matthew.

Matthew started up a gymnastics class. He's been having a lot of fun. It's helping a bit with his coordination too. Mel started up a volleyball class and she's having a blast.  She's getting pretty good at bumping and serving.  We just have to get her to move her feet (feet that happen to be the same size of her mothers).

Gina was released from singing time and called to be the cub master in the ward. Almost on cue, Alex decided he wanted nothing to do with nursery anymore.  We drop him of screaming and he usually falls asleep after 5 minutes.  It's during his nap time anyway.  We can't wait to be done with one o'clock church.

Rob and Gina have been playing volleyball on Thursday nights at the stake center.  It's a nice break from the day and Melanie is a great baby sitter.  Thanks for letting us play Mel.

October has been a very fun month.  We love Halloween. Everyone, that is, except Alex.  We asked him what he wanted to be this year and his reply was "NOTHING!" We kept asking because he had fun trick or treating last year but he was adamant that he wanted to be NOTHING! We  asked him  if he wanted to be Alex and he said, "NOTHING!"  We asked him if he wanted to go naked and he said, "NOTHING!" We let it drop.

The kids had a day off of school on one of Rob's days off so we took a day trip to Cache Valley to see the fall colors. First we went the the North Logan Pumpkin Walk where the kids spent a half hour poking there heads through all of the photo op boards and yelling, "Hey mom, take my picture."  The pumpkin displays were a lot of fun. Some of our favorites were Angry Birds, Despicable Me, Calvin and Hobbs Snowmen, and Mel really liked Phineas and Ferb. They also had a pretty cool display from The Christmas Story movie including the "award lamp" made out of gourds, Ralphie in his bunny suit, and Ralphie sitting in the bathroom with a bar of soap in his mouth.  I think they even had a kid outside with his tongue stuck to a pole.  Our jogging stroller got a flat tire so Alex had to walk the whole way and he wasn't happy until we stopped at the playground.

After the Pumpkin Walk we went to the Aggie Ice Cream shop for lunch and Ice Cream.  Then we headed to 1st Dam to feed the geese and throw rocks in the water.  We then headed up the canyon to 2nd Dam where we hopped onto the river walk trail and had a nice fall hike.  Alex again was a little cranky (I'm sensing a pattern here).  He calmed down when we found him some cool leaves and a butterfly that was half frozen to death.  While Gina walked back to 2nd Dam to get the car, Rob and the kids played on a bridge at the camp ground just past the Zanavoo restaurant. This was welcome quiet time for Gina and a fun time for Rob and the kids. Mel found a bunch of helicopter leaves and showed the boys how to throw them in the river.  Amazingly Alex didn't fall into the river.  It's been known to happen with that boy.

One evening we got a call from Stephen and Margaret who invited us to go to the Ogden Nature Center for some pre-Halloween fun.  We dressed the kids up in their costumes (Mel was a gypsy, Matthew a pirate, and Alex was "NOTHING"). As we walked into the nature center there were some really fun bird houses that lined the trail. The kids played a few games and then we went to see some snakes and owls.  The kids had fun in a yurt they strung hundreds of strings through and told the kids to get through the spider web.  We went for a little walk and saw some white tail deer.  They we went for a walk in the dark along a trail in the meadow. It was fun for the kids but I think we tired grandma out a little.  We stopped for cookies and bread that was on sale and then we headed home. A good time was had by all.

Finally, Halloween was approaching.  The kids were very excited and had planned who they were going with (except Alex, of course). We had set up all of our decorations, including the recycled gatorade bottles that Mel and Gina made into spooky lanterns. The candy was bought and we were all ready, that is until the night before Halloween Mel started throwing up and couldn't stop. Luckily it was a quick moving bug and by trick or treating time she insisted on going out.  I could tell she was still not feeling well because that was the slowest I've ever seen her move from door to door.  Usually she's a woman on a mission and nothing can stop her.  Luckily, the weather was perfect. Matthew had a great time trick or treating with Uncle Blake  and cousin Krysten.  He even signed his life away to piracy at one house where they gave him a full size candy bar in return.  We'll miss our dear sweet boy but he'll make a wonderful pirate, Arrgh!  Rob stayed home to hand out candy and Alex spent the evening in the basement playing computer games.  Not even the temptation of candy could make him go out this year.  Luckily his brother and sister are the coolest kids in the world and said they would share theirs with him.

We almost forgot. In all of this Halloween mayhem Rob and Gina celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary.  We went to a King Singers Concert at Abravanel Hall on Oct. 28th. We would have gone on our anniversary, the 29th, but It was Stake Conference that weekend and Rob had commitments with the Stake Choir. They sounded very nice, by the way.  We had a great time at the concert and saw President Uchdorf (1st Counselor in the General Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).  We bought a CD and book of arrangements that the King Singers won a Grammy for and decided to head home despite the fact that the singers were in the lobby signing autographs.  We're not much for crowds and lines (yes, we are party poopers).  We took the long way home and drove up in the avenues to find the trail head for the ensign peak trail. This happens also to be a great make out point.  Yes we saw a few young couples their but we refrained from snogging (There was simply no place to park :)

Thank you for playing too much information. Have a great November.

August 2011

I'm a little late with this entry. It's been a busy month of back to school preparations.

We went to Hogle Zoo for an end of summer outing. The kids had a good time but it was a bit hot for Matthew.  The Birds in Flight show is always the best part. It's amazing to watch them.  I don't think the birds liked the heat much either. Our show was a little longer than normal because a couple of the birds didn't feel like cooperating.  It took five minutes to get one of them to come down from a tree.

The time has finally come to ship Matthew off to school.  His first day was a big success and the good news is he still wants to go every day.  Alex is getting a bit bored without him around but he has taken over his spot in front of the Wii.  Yes, my two year old can beat me at Mario Kart if he really wants to. Lucky for me, he thinks it's more fun to slam into things and drive off cliffs.

Melanie just won't stop growing. She is only half a shoe size smaller than her mother. She is having a good time in her 4th grade class. She knows a lot of the kids from last year so that has been a good thing.

At the end of the month we had a great Labor Day weekend. On Saturday we went to the Gunnell barn for a party with the Spackman family (Gina's mother's family).  There was a lot of great food (as to be expected at harvest time). The annual squash exchange was in full force. I hope no one left their car doors unlocked. Grandma's minute to win it games were a hit with the kids and then there was backyard volleyball and croquet. (So it wasn't as much croquet as Alex and the other kids chasing balls with the mallets but grandpa Spackman would want them trained young).

On Sunday we went to the baby blessing of Faith McGee, Julie and Phillips little angel. Afterwards we went and had another plentiful meal and visited with Rob's family.  We hijacked Emily and invited Jen and her family over for games. Stephen and Margaret joined us and we played Apples to Apples until Michael, Emily's dad, called wondering where on earth his daughter was. A good time was had by all.

On Monday we took advantage of Rob's day off to go to Cabella's.  We had been racking up the credit card points the last couple of year's and we got 4 $100 gift cards to Cabella's.  I've been nagging Rob to get us a decent tent so he finally gave in.  Our other tent is a four man dome tent. It looks like clowns coming out of a miniature car when we get up in the morning.  We hung out by the animal displays and then headed to the camping section.  We found the tent we were looking for only to be shocked that the internet prices were a lot better.  The lady at the desk said they would give us the internet price so Rob was able to breathe again. We picked up a few more camping supplies and some things for our 72 hr. kits. Next we headed down to the fishing area. While Rob looked for some gear, we went and hung out with the fish in the aquarium. We had a little left over after Rob was finished so we let the kids go and pick something out.  Mel picked a pump action gun that shoots about 20 foam balls, Matthew picked a giant blue fish pillow, and Alex picked a cool red truck with a tow cable (awesome).
When we finally checked out the checker asked Rob where he got all the cards. He told her about the credit card points and her response was, "Sweet!" We left the store with a bill of about $4. It's a lot of fun spending money without any reserve. I think that's the only shopping spree Rob & I have ever been on. Talk about fun. This coming from a gal who absolutely hates shopping. It helped that it was Cabella's and not just some store in the Mall.

Yes, we are completely spoiled. Now I just have to plan our next camping trip. I'd really like to take the kids to Yellowstone next summer.  Maybe we can feed them to the bears, just kidding. You know I'm kidding right?

July 2011

What a crazy, busy, fun month.

At the beginning of the month we went to Hyrum, UT to celebrate the fourth of July in true Utah fashion.  Sitting on the side of a road to watch a really lame parade but walking away with a ton of candy.  We had a good time in Hyrum and got to hang out with cousins too. A little later that evening we made our way to North Ogden where uncle Tim was shooting a fireworks show.  We hung out with Andrea, the girls and Andrea's sister and family. We ate a lot of junk food and had fun watching the fireworks.

Mel and Matthew got to go to an Up With Kids day camp. They spent a week practicing a show and at the end of the week they performed it at a park in Bountiful.  They both had a lot of fun. As an added bonus, Sierra and Porter Franklin (our good buds) were at the camp too.  The kids spent most of each day practicing but the last hour they got to go to the Layton Surf and Swim.  They had a great time.

Rob took the kids to the Surf and Swim one evening for a party that our dentist throws for his patients every year.  I'm pretty sure it's to ensure we keep coming because of all the junk food that was there.  Alex particularly loved the cheese balls and cotton candy. A good time was had by all.

On the way to our family reunion at Bear Lake, we stopped in Brigham City to see the progress on the new temple.  They had just put the Angel Moroni on.

The annual Gunnell Bear Lake reunion was a big hit.  We camped at aunt Joyce's property this year. Gina only stayed one night because she had to get back for her show on Friday and Saturday.  In true Gunnell style the reunion was filled with hilarious moments of the family making fools of themselves. This year we played minute to win it games.  No tether ball of death.  Alex said he wanted to go home every five minutes until Rob was loading the car and he started playing on the water trampoline that cousin Gary pulled out of the lake.  They he threw a tantrum when he had to leave.  Melanie came home good and sun burnt but she had a great time, especially on the mini kayak.  Matthew seems to have grown out of his irrational fear of the wind and he had a great time for the first time it what seems like years.  He was just a little grumpy when he woke up from a nap.  Rob let the kids take a lot of pictures so I will spend the next hour going through and deleting. Oh well.

Cinderella, the show Gina was in, finally ended on July 30th.  I had a great time but was glad it was done. I haven't seen most of the show because I was constantly changing costumes. Rob tells me it was a fun show though. It took up quite a bit of summer but it was a fun experience. I now have the theater bug again. What am I thinking?

June 2011

June was another cool wet month.  We're lucky it didn't get too hot, too fast or flooding might have been a lot worse this year.  Unfortunately, the farmers haven't been able to get much in the ground.  What a crazy wet year.

We started out the month with a rather strenuous hike up Adam's canyon to a waterfall.  The normally moderate hike was made difficult by all the water coming down the canyon but it made it even more beautiful.  We kept thinking we had reached the waterfall because there were several places with small to large waterfalls.  When we finally reached the top we had to wade across the stream to actually see the waterfall.  The water was frigid and our feet were numb for the next day.  Rob fell in and Alex wasn't too happy about it.  It was an amazing hike but a little long for a two year old.  You'd think he'd be used to us dragging him places by now.

We also made our way to Summerfest in Logan to hear aunt Sara's band play (Leaping Lulu). They were awesome, as usual.  Mel took the opportunity to get her face painted and we hung out on the tabernacle square for a while.  Later that day we all congregated at the Gunnell barn for the blessing of sweet baby Jame's (Sara and Kevin's new bouncing baby boy). It was a very special day. Unfortunately we had to leave early because Gina had a show that night she had to get back to.

The family was able to go and see Gina as a mouse in Cinderella.  They liked it so much that they came twice.  The show is half way through it's run. It's a great show for children young and old. If you want to see it Google the Terrace Plaza Playhouse and call them for tickets.  It runs Monday, Friday, and Saturday through July 30th.

Rob was a busy boy this month because one of the doctors and one nurse practitioner were out due to surgeries. Another doctor was on vacation so he picked up a lot of the slack.  He's a bit tired but he managed to survive. He even saved a few baby robins the kids scared out of their nest before they could fly. The stupid birds kept running into the street and wouldn't stay in the nest.  We finally had to put them in the back yard and hope and pray they magpies wouldn't get them.  They flew after a couple of days so I guess Rob didn't traumatize them too much.

Mel and Matthew have been busy playing with cousins and annoying one another.  Alex thinks that no one but him gets to play the Wii or the computer.  I didn't think he could do much but I was shocked to see him getting in and out of the games with no problem. We're raising another couch potato.

Have a great summer and remember to stop and smell the roses.

May 2011

It's been a crazy, cold month. La Nina has really messed up the weather pattern.

We've had a good month nonetheless. Rob has been on call a lot this month and working a lot on his days off.  It's funny though. Even with him working extra hours it hasn't come close to being as bad as residency.

Gina went and tried out for a musical at a local community theater (Terrace Plaza Playhouse). She was up for the stepmother in Cinderella. No, she did not get the part. Instead, she is a part of the ensemble.  She is a featured waltzer, and a mouse puppeteer that later turns into a horse. So if your inner child is needing to escape or if you just want to see Gina as a horse come see the show.  It runs June 17th-July 30 Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. For ticket info. go to www.terraceplayhouse.com.

Mel just had her last day of school. Yesterday was field day and she had a blast. She was particularly good at the tug-o-war.  They did boys against girls and the girls clobbered them.  They sent the two biggest girls over to the boy side (one of whom was Mel) and the boys clobbered the girls.  When Mel was sent back to the other side one boy said, "Can we keep Melanie, she's tough." She is really going to miss her 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Siler.  She has had a lot of good teachers but Mrs. Siler is her favorite.

Matthew still won't go outside if the wind is blowing too hard so this spring has been particularly trying.  He keeps busy with friends, playgroup, and way too many video games.

Alex has become increasingly bossy. He's lucky that Matthew is such a good big brother and puts up with him.  The boys love playing together.  Their favorites are running and falling. In running, they run around the house yelling at the top of their lungs.  In falling, Alex lays on top of Matthew on the couch and they roll off giggling.(There are usually injuries).

For Memorial Day we went to Cache Valley and stayed with Gina's parents. We were able to visit the gravesides of relatives in four cemeteries. We took the kids to Trenton to see Gina's grandpa Spackman's graveside.  He passed away while we were in Vegas and we weren't able to attend the funeral.  Right next to great grandpa Spackman is a head stone for Gina's aunt and uncle Cottle.  We tried to stop Alex from climbing on it (bad Alex) but since they aren't dead yet we snapped a photo of Alex playing on their grave.  We'll make sure and get the picture to them.  Next we visited the Gunnell family plot in the Smithfield cemetery. Mel was surprised to find out that her grandpa Gunnell had to brothers that both died at a very young age. We also were able to locate one of Rob's cousins who unfortunately died in a car accident several years ago.  The kids had enough of the cold weather so we dropped them at the Gunnell farm and went to meet Rob's parents at the Logan Cemetary where Rob's great grandparents on his mother's side are buried. We followed Stephen and Margaret around to a few family member's sights. Later that day we headed out to Hyrum, without the kids again, and visited Rob's grandparents on his Father's side.  We also found the memorial for Ira Allen. Going back through family history we found that we are related to one of the other doctors that Rob works with through Ira Allen, just through different wives. He had about five of them.

We love learning the stories of the the people who came before us. We hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day and took a few moments to reflect.

When we returned home that evening we found our yard covered in branches.  Apparently it had snowed the night we were gone and broke many branches that were already heavy with leaves.  (It's been one of those years).  Our neighbors sump pump broke down and their basement flooded.  We're afraid the worst is yet to come when the snow pack melts. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Hoping for warmer weather.

April 2011

April was a little wet and wild but jam packed with adventure.

At the beginning of the month the Nielsen clan took advantage of spring break and headed to Moab.  The weather wasn't promising but we actually got in two good days of hiking before it got too windy.  We got to Moab around 3 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon.  We checked into our hotel and went to Arches National Park.  We hit a few of the easy hikes and look out points.  Balance Rock, The Windows, and the lookout for Delicate Arch.  Friday morning we headed out early to hike the Devil's garden.  There are several cool arches along this trail, including Landscape Arch.  A big chunk fell off of it in the 70's and they're not sure how much longer it has before it entirely collapses.  The first 2.5 miles were a breeze.  The kids were happy. There was a lot to see. The weather was perfect for hiking, so we decided to take the primitive loop back.  The kids started to rebel at about mile 3.5 of 5.  Robert had the hardest job.  He carried Alex in the hiking pack most of the way.  His back was sore afterwards.  We had a great time but I'm thinking my new mileage limit with children under eight years old is three miles.

We had a lot of fun exploring Moab and many of the surrounding tourist traps.  On Saturday we  went to Dead Horse Point State Park. It wasn't the best weather for viewing the vista so we'll have to go back some day.  Because of lousy weather we ended up at the Hole in the Rock gift shop/museum.  We took the tour into the house that was carved out of the mountain side.  It's pretty amazing what that crazy couple did.  There cave home was over 3,000 square feet and they also ran a cafe from it.  We passed on the petting zoo.  The boys must have had enough of the car because between the two of them, the upchuck tally was around 4. Rob went to the local pharmacy and got a little something for nausea to keep the boys from losing their lunches on the long ride home.

Melanie had her 3rd grade program in the month of April.  It was awesome.  She got to do a little dance with an umbrella. Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen, and Gunnell came to watch. Afterwards we went home to color Easter Eggs and have some yummy angel food cake.  Mel proceeded to shove the whole cake in her mouth, she was so excited.

I'm sorry about the overload of pictures.  It's only about a third of them.  We get a little carried away when we go to the National parks.  The last pictures are from an awesome family party and Easter egg hunt at the Nielsen's and our adorable kids dressed up in their Sunday best.  Alex really needs a hair cut.

Hopefully the weather will warm up so we can plant something soon.  I think everyone is tired of this cold and wet weather.

Happy April and may May bring a little more sunshine.

March 2011

March came in like a lion and went out like a lion.  What a month.

At the beginning of the month Rob and I took a whirlwind trip to Mesa, AZ for my brother's wedding. (Thank you Steven and Margaret for taking the kids. We owe you big time.) We can't figure out what Heather sees in Jared but we do have a tendancy to marry up in our family.  It was an adventurous 12 hour drive with my sister Sheri, my aunt Joyce, and my little brother Kevin and his very pregnant wife Sara.  I'm amazed Sara put up with us.  The wedding was wonderful. Pranks were pulled at the happy couples expense.  I'm sure by the end of the day they were both happy to get away from us all.  The next day we drove back but made a small detour at Horseshoe Bend near Page, AZ.  Sara survived the trip and we only got lost once.  It is notable that during the entire 24 hour round trip in the car the radio was only turned on once.  The Gunnell family sure has the gift of gab.  Our apologies to Rob and Sara.

The weather was typical March weather for Utah. Snow, rain, sun, and then back to snow just when you think Spring is coming. Typical.

Mel celebrated her birthday in grand style.  She invited a few friends and we went to Fat Cat's in Ogden. The girls bowled, played games, they loved the bumper cars, and they barely touched the pizza and bread sticks. Oh well.  After the party was over we went home for cake and ice cream with grandma and grandpa Nielsen.  Mel's best bud Sierra was their too to help her blow out all those candles.

On April Fool's day we changed the clock on Mel so she thought she had missed the bus. She kept asking me for ideas for pranks to pull on her father.  I told her that I don't pull pranks on Rob on April fool's day.  He puts up with my shenanigans all year round so I give the fool the day off on April 1st.  It's April 2nd now. Ready or not here I come.

Life is pretty darn good.

February 2011

February always goes by too fast.  We seemed to be the only people in the neighborhood that were happy to see the heavy, wet snow that falls at the end of winter around these parts.  Add the lake affect and it makes for some awesome snow men and back yard snow ball fights.

We had a fun family outing to the dinosaur park in Ogden.  The kids always have a good time and it's fun to pose with the dinosaurs.  Alex wasn't exactly thrilled with riding the pink dino that seemed to have come from the Flintstones.

Rob, Gina, and Mel auditioned for Annie at a community theater in Ogden.  No we didn't get any parts but we might be able to convince Rob and Mel to try again now that they've been through it once.

Rob officially turned 34 on February 28th.  He is loving his new job despite the fact that it is RSV season.  He has lost 40 lbs. since residency.  We're pretty certain that residency is not good for your health.  Happy birthday Rob.

Matthew and Alex are up to their same old tricks.  Matthew plays way too many video games and Alex needs everyone's attention all the time. There is a picture in this month's album where Alex is wearing his Christmas pj's grandma Gunnell gave him.  He refused to wear them at Christmas time and now we can't get him to take them off. Go figure. Happy February everyone.

January 2011

What a great start to the new year.

January was un-seasonally warm. We still got to play in the snow a little.

Mel is enjoying school and has started planning her birthday party. It's not 'til March Mel! She is very helpful with her brothers and has even started changing Alex's diaper (wahoo!).

Matthew still loves swim lessons. He went off the diving board for the first time and advanced to level four. Good job buddy!

Alex has become very bossy. He demands our attention at all times. He's very happy but he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it.  He is particularly good at manipulating Melanie. He has that girl wrapped around his finger.

Rob has entered the busy flu and rsv season. Things are going well at work we just wish he'd stop bringing the diseases home with him. Honey, please leave your work at the office.

Gina keeps herself busy with the boys, her singing time calling, and a fundraiser she is working on for the Reach Out and Read program at Rob's office.

January has been a very playful one. Our particular favorite moment was when Gina decided to pull a Calvin and Hobbs on Robert and fill his side of the driveway with mini snowmen.  We thought the food coloring for the faces would be a nice touch but it didn't work so well. Secretly, Rob had a stressful day and I think he enjoyed running over something. Oh, the humanity!

December 2010

The partying just continues.  We have been to one party after another since a week before Thanksgiving. It is so great to be so close to family and friends to share this time of year.  However, we did start to miss our friends back in PA and all over the country. We have been truly blessed with great friends and family and we'll never forget it.

On Dec. 11th we went to the Nielsen family Christmas party where Santa made his traditional visit. You see, the Nielsen family is so awesome that he takes time out of his busy schedule just to visit them. We had everyone there but Dave, Suzanne, the boys and the little peanut. We hope you guys had a great Christmas.

On Dec. 18th we drove in white knuckle conditions up Logan Canyon and stayed the night in the yurt at the Beaver Mountain Ski Resort. The Gunnell family isn't so lucky to receive personal appearances from the big man. Most of them deserve a big lump of coal. We had a great time on our private sledding hill and a few of the adults and older kids went night skiing at Beaver. It was perfect weather for it and we woke up to a couple of feet of fresh snow and it was still snowing as we caravaned out of the canyon. We all had a great time and were amazed we made it through the night without any fighting. There were 28 of us crammed in there. Uncle Brian, Jared and his fiance Heather were the only ones who couldn't make it. We missed you guys and hope you had a great Christmas.

On Dec. 22nd we decided to take a little family time to go to Temple Square in SLC to see the lights. It was incredibly crowded because it was a rare warm night. Rob about lost Alex a few times and I can't say that a great time was had by all. We stayed the night in a hotel and went back to Temple Square the next morning.  What a difference. We had a fabulous time and we had the whole place almost to ourselves.  We had lunch in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building at the Nauvoo Cafe.  We all enjoyed the giant cinnamon roll.  Later that day Gina drove to North Ogden to visit with her grandmother at her aunt and uncle's home.  Grandma Spackman had surgery on the 22nd and was at the Larkin's to recover a bit. It was a great visit and we are constantly amazed at the resilience and sense of humor of Grandma Spackman. What a great lady.

Christmas eve we went to Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen's. We read a nice Christmas Nativity story and sang the songs that went along with it.  We played games and ate far too many snacks.

Christmas morning was the usual spoiling of the children.  Mel got a scooter from Santa, and more pixos from mom and dad. Matthew asked Santa for a glow dome (a cool art dome with lights) and he got a play tent from the Nielsens. Alex didn't really care who his gifts were coming from but he had fun. He never wanted to open the next one. He just wanted to play with the toy he had just opened. He got a Little People Car ramp from Santa and a fun toy from the Nielsens. He and Matthew both got some books and a Mr. Play-doh Head kit from mom and dad. It's just brown play dough with Mr. Potato Head parts to stick in it. It's pretty fun. Mom and dad got new cell phones (I'll get the new number out to y'all).

At the end of the month we took another trip to Cache Valley to visit family because the kids were driving us nuts. We spent some time with cousins and Rob, Mel, and cousin Emily played a lot in the snow. Rob only dumped Mel in a ditch once. Luckily she went feet first and only her boots and feet got wet. She was a tad bit cold.

We hope everyone had a great holiday season and happy new year.

November 2010

November started with a lot more leaf removal.  Alex didn't seem to mind one bit.  He made us pile up leaves at the bottom of the slide for him to slide into. It was also his big day on November 20th.  The little scamp turned two and is a big trouble maker.  He does all of his dastardly deeds with a big grin on his face too. He can't help it if he's cute.

The holiday season has officially begun.  We had an early Thanksgiving dinner a week before the holiday with Rob's family. His parents were supposed to go to Boise for Thanksgiving but the weather canceled their trip.  We had a great time with Rob's family even though it seemed a little short.  It was a school night and people had to get back for work so there was none of the usual game playing until all hours of the night.  We still had more food than we could possibly eat and a good time was had by all despite the fact that everyone got caught in traffic on the I-15.

Thanksgiving day we spent at the Gunnell farm with Gina's family.  We had yet another huge meal and did a whole lot of playing.  Grandma Gunnell was quick to put us to work though.  She and grandpa know someone who makes toy cars out of scrap wood and the LDS church sends the toys to needy children.  We all spent an hour or two sanding and assembling the cars.  (I shouldn't say all. Rob, April, and Blake were too engrossed in a puzzle to help. Rob & April didn't leave it for two days and the 1000 piece puzzle was completed at 10:30 p.m. the day after Thanksgiving. Crazies). It was a regular Santa's workshop. We all had a lot of fun.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving we had our official Gunnell family Christmas party and talent show.  It proved once again to be very entertaining.  Every year it is the same thing.  The kids get up and show the real talent while the adults just blow a lot of steam.  Good times. Jared and his fiance Heather were able to witness the whole thing via Skipe.  It's a good thing the microphone wasn't that great or Heather might have second thoughts about the family she's getting herself into.

For family home evening the following Monday we decked the halls and decorated the tree. This is always a lot of fun for our family because we've made a habit of picking up Christmas ornaments in all of our travels.  It's fun to see the kids pick up an ornament and say, "Oh I remember this one..." and tell us all about it.  Matthew particularly loves his train ornament we got in Boulder City, NV and our Hershey Kiss ornaments. My personal favorite is the one we picked up when cousin Jason took us for a tour at the CIA. It's a dove with an ornate gold and purple background that simply says, "Peace."  Rob likes the ones we've picked up at the National Parks we've visited. Mel's favorites are one from the White house collection and one we picked up from Mount Vernon.  It has George Washington looking through a telescope and there is a little wheel that turns and changes the constellations. Alex particularly likes the old bugs bunny ornament. He loves those cartoons lately.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.

October 2010

Happy Halloween!

October is always one of our favorite months as a family.  We had plenty of fun and adventures.  At the beginning of the month we went to a pumpkin patch with a hayride to pick the perfect pumpkins.  It was a beautiful night and we all had a great time.

The house that we are renting is very nice but we have one big issue with it.  There are three enormous trees in the back yard and it has turned into a never ending raking job.  The kids thought it was fun to come out and help the first couple of times when the weather was still nice and warm.  They're not as interested in helping now that the leaf piles are wet and cold.

Matthew has also been taking swim lessons at the Aquatic Center in Clearfield.  He's having a great time and he's made a lot of progress.  He just needs to learn how to use his arms and legs together now.

We also had the chance to go to Cache Valley and Celebrate Grandma Spackman's 88th birthday. It was fun to get together with family and tell stories.  Grandma can still put us all in our place. She is very witty and doesn't look a day older than 90. Just kidding Grandma. I'm so happy that my kids have been able to meet her and get to know her. She is an incredible woman.

Halloween was a lot of fun this year.  The kids convinced me to make Gummy Bear costumes because they love the Gummy Bear song.  If you haven't heard of it, just Google it and you won't be able to stop dancing.  Alex was the one exception because we could not give up the Eayor costume that all of our children have worn at his age. If we don't label those pictures well it will be impossible to tell which child is in the costume.  Trick or Treating was a bit of a wash out.  The rain started coming down right as we left the house.  I took Mel & Matthew out with cousin Krysten and Aunt Sheri.  Rob took Alex around and left a couple of bowls of candy on the porch.  After braving the rain we went to Aunt Sheri's house for pie with several other neighbors from the community.  There was a beautiful rainbow and we had a lot of fun.  When we returned home it was no surprise that the candy in the bowls was gone however, one of our bowls went missing too. Rob was a little miffed because it was one of our metal popcorn bowls. Stupid Teenagers! (No offense to my wonderful teenage nieces and nephews).

Well, it looks like the lawn needs to be raked again. I wish these leaves would all just fall.

Sept. 2010

Another month has come and gone full of fun adventures.

We celebrated Matthew's birthday by taking him and a few of his friends to Fat Cat's (a fun center in Ogden).  They all had a great time and Melanie even got out of school a half hour early so she could come too (spoiled rotten kid). Later all of Matthew's grandparents dropped by for cake and ice cream and to shower him with gifts.  Aunt Sheri, Uncle Blake and cousins Krysten and Kent dropped by too.

Matthew is very happy to be a big five year old. He is taking swim lessons and is progressing very well.  He can swim across the short length of the pool when he sets his mind to it.  It ain't pretty but he can do it.  The rest of his day he spends with mom and brother Alex bored out of his mind unless mom has arranged a play date for him.  He loves playing card games (War & crazy 8's are his favorites as of late). He's still addicted to the Wii but he doesn't like playing by himself so that cuts down on his playing time since mom won't risk a migraine for a video game. He loves playing with sister and daddy though. Every once in a while mom challenges him to a Mario Kart race.

Funny story. Just last night, cousin Krysten was over and Matthew and she were playing in the toy room. I think they were jumping on the giant bean bag chair.  Anywho, after a while a whimpering Matthew and Krysten with her hand holding a clump of hair (still attached to her head) came up the stairs saying, "It was an accident." There was a little silly putty in Krysten's Hair and an enormous clump in Matthew's. Apparently they had opened the putty and put it down on the bean bag chair and forgot about it. They forgot about it until they started doing front flips onto the bag and it ended up in their hair. Rob had a fun time digging it out with a comb but no hair cutting was required.  I wish I had thought to take a picture. It was like a giant neon green booger in Matthew's hair. It was about the size of his fist.

Alex is as mischievous as ever.  He is a little parrot and repeats everything you say (please watch what you say around him, I mean everything). He understands so much and when he gets himself into trouble it's hard not to laugh.

Melanie is loving her school and very into her school's reading program.  She's earning tickets for a drawing for a bike.  She is determined to win a bike for her dad to replace the one that was stolen while we were in Vegas. She especially loves doing current events. I'm having a hard time digging up new ones each week because her teacher has instructed no violence.

Rob was roped into running an office fundraising campaign to raise money for books to give children and their families to teach the importance of reading together at a very young age.  Because most doctors don't have the time and know very little about fundraising Gina has stepped in and got things rolling for them again.  It's been kind of fun, too bad she isn't getting paid to do it.

During this September's summer like weather we decided to go on a family hike.  We started with a few problems. First, Rob had to work until 2 p.m. on the Saturday we could go so we got a hot, late start. Second, the hike was only 1.5 miles in (our kids have been on longer) but Gina neglected to notice the 1700 foot climb when she was reading the description. Third, Gina didn't pack up enough water.  It was a tough hike but it was well worth it.  The fall colors were amazing and we didn't see another hiker on the trail (which could have been bad for us had one of us collapsed of dehydration). The kids complained a bit on the way up but we made it and the way down took us about a third of the time. Rob was a little sore after carrying Alex up a mountain but the final consensus was that it was a really cool hike. We would just start earlier in the morning and be a little more prepared for the next one.

August 2010

I'm really late on this entry and August was a great month.

The first pictures in August's album illustrate how hard it is to give an 18 month old a hair cut.

We went to Lagoon with aunt Sheri, and cousins Krysten & Kent. The kids had a blast and the adults managed to have a little fun too.  Melanie bravely went on the Rocket (It shoots you straight into the air and then drops you).  Rob convinced her it was just like the Tower of Terror in Disneyland.  She was hyperventilating pretty bad when they got off and she says it is nothing like the Tower of Terror and she will never do it again.  There was another ride almost identical called "Re-entry." This one slowly takes you up just as high as the Rocket and then drops you.  Rob somehow convinced her this one would be better so they went on that one too.  Mel again exited the ride hyperventilating. She says she can't ever trust her father again.  I told her that was probably wise.

Matthew had a great time and said the Sky-ride was his favorite.  Alex just rode in the stroller and ate food all day.  He was happy, he just didn't want to ride anything.  We bumped in to Gina's cousin Kristen and her family. We even got to ride the white roller coaster with Jon and Audrey.  We went back a couple of weeks later with bounce back passes.  We spent a lot of time in Lagoon-A-Beach and enjoyed another day in the park.

So technically the Spackman family reunion was in September over the Labor Day weekend but since I'm so late on Augusts post I thought it wouldn't hurt to add it in.  It was great to see everyone from the Spackman clan again and catch up.  Rob and I hadn't seen many of them since we moved to Pennsylvania.  We all had a great time.  There was a lot of great food, a lot of talking, minature golf provided by aunt Sheri, volleyball, and Croquet in honor of grandpa Spackman.  Thanks for coming everybody and a big thanks to Sheri for organizing the whole thing.

I can't say how happy Rob and I feel to be back with our families. It's nice being with a group of people we don't have to explain ourselves to.

July 2010

So I'm a little late on July's entry. I've been busy. Ever since we got back to Utah our families won't leave us alone.  What were we thinking moving closer to family? (Just Kidding.)  We got back home just in time for the annual family reunion at Bear Lake.  There was fun in the sun for everyone.  Cousin John introduced the family to a game I lovingly call the "Tether Ball of Death." Among the injured were auntie Joyce (we still don't know what she was thinking), and Brighton, the dog (I've never heard a dog yelp so loud).  Luckily my cousin Jessyka was able to nurse her mother's knee and Joyce will be just fine.  Unfortunately, the next day grandma Gunnell lost her footing playing volleyball and ended up in the ER with a broken hip.  The surgery went well and she is recovering remarkably well.  The nurses didn't have to kick grandpa Gunnell out of the hospital but they came close.  You can't keep a good woman down so she is back to work and getting around on crutches.

We are settling into our new community in Layton.  Rob is loving his job. I haven't heard him say, "Do I have to go in?" even once yet. This is a good sign.  Gina was called to be primary chorister in her church and the first week went pretty well.  We'll see what happens when the novelty of a new person wears off.  Rob was just called to be 2nd counselor in the young men's presidency.  The only problem is he can't attend their meetings on Tuesday nights because he works late that day.  They must have been pretty desperate because they called him anyway (just kidding).  We all know he will do a great job.

Mel is excited for school but doesn't want summer to end.  We have had cousins galore. After Bear Lake cousins Sarah and Scotty played with us in Layton for a few days.  Then we had cousins Braxton, Alexa, Aidan, Anika, & Kenyon for five days while their parents were out of town.  Aunt Sheri and Gina divided and conquered and we all survived the week and actually had a good time.  Sheri & Gina have now both experienced 5 children at a time and understand the daily stress that April & Jay must feel.

Matthew is still addicted to the Wii and Alex is still a trouble maker. Alex is talking quite a bit now and surprises us everyday.  Now if we could just end the tantrums.

July in Utah was awesome.  I guess things don't seem that hot when you've been used to 110 degrees.  Thanks for a great welcome home everybody.

June 2010

Amidst all the moving business Rob and Gina took some time to do a little star gazing at Madam Tussauds in Las Vegas (We had half off tickets, it was fun but I don't think it was worth what they were asking).  Anywho, we met a lot of interesting characters and had a few laughs. View the photo album to catch all of the escapades.

Shortly after we arrived in Layton Rob and the boys attended a father son camp out.  They had a great time and Rob even survived a night in a tent with Alex.  Gina was also able to catch up with  the Franklins (friends from Med school) at Pine View Reservoir.  The Franklins think we are stalking them because we seem to show up wherever they move.

Gina also saw Jason Bodily (another friend from Hershey) in the Salt Lake Airport after he had a visit with family.  It is such a small world. We have such great friends everywhere we've been.

We did have some bad news amongst all of the fun.  Matthew misses the cut off date in Utah by 8 stinking days and will not be able to attend kindergarten this year.  We are scrambling to find something to keep him excited about school.  Miss Sarah and Miss Sandra had him so ready for school we don't know what to do now.  We'll keep the cogs in his blonde head moving and get him active in sports or something.  I guess I will survive, we all know Matthew will.

May 2010

OK, so this will be the last journal entry from Las Vegas. Sad but true. Tomorrow Gina is driving the kids, the cat, & two gold fish to Utah.  We all hope she survives.

May was an incredibly eventful month for the Nielsens. Mel was baptized May 1st. Matthew graduated from preschool. He absolutely loves his teachers Miss Sandra, and Miss Sarah. We do too. Our little four year old started reading this year. Yes, I am proud and completely impressed.  I know my kids are brilliant but it is so fun to watch them learn and reach milestones. Robert also graduated from his residency program on June 12th (we think he's pretty brilliant too), but he still has to work until the 30th. It's been pure torture.  He's doing alright and is very excited to start his new job in Ogden.

The family took one last trip to the Bellagio to see the atrium and Gina went on a hike with the cub scouts yesterday. We've all been busy packing and preparing.  Last Wednesday we made home made root beer and set up the volleyball net at a park to host a farewell party.  We couldn't believe the turn out.  We are surrounded by so many fabulous friends and it is very hard to say goodbye.  The same thing happened to us in Hershey.  There is hope for this world after all.  In all of our travels we've always found the most incredible people.  I'm sure the same will hold true for wherever we settle next.

So, here's to life and whatever may come.  Keep hoping and dreaming, but most of all, keep working.

Mel's Baptism

Melanie had to wait a long time so she was extra excited when her baptism day came.  We were so lucky to have so many family and friends to share the special day with.  She was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church by her father, Robert J. Nielsen.  Her Grandpa Nielsen & Grandpa Gunnell stood as the witnesses over the baptism. We have a wonderful bishop and primary presidency that made the day very special for her and the one other girl from our ward that was baptized.  There were six from the entire stake that day.  It's funny but four of the kids that were baptized were in Rob and Gina's 6 year old primary class with Melanie before the stake reorganized.  It was fun to see all of the kids again. They actually remembered us.

We were so happy to have Rob's brother, Mike, and his family there with us.  Gina's brother Jay and his family also made the trip south in their RV.  It was a bit windy so I hope the drive home wasn't too scary. We arranged a rental home with a great back yard so we could all just hang around and enjoy one another's company.  Rob & Mel went with Mike & his family up to Red Rock Canyon and came back with some great pictures.  I hope Nanette was comfortable.  They are expecting a bouncing baby  boy in September.  That much car riding would have killed me but she loves Red Rock Canyon.  It is a beautiful place.

We partied all weekend at the vacation rental and Matthew went through some serious Mario Kart withdrawal.  We are so grateful to our friends and family who made this such a special day for Mel.

April 2010

So I'm a little early but I just had to write about our wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon. Rob had a vacation week the first week of April.  Mel's spring break was the last week of March.  The timing of his breaks just never seems to work out so we had to split the difference.  We kept Mel out of school one extra day and took a four day weekend to the south rim of the Grand Canyon National Park.

I think the pictures pretty much say it all. We had a great time. It was the perfect get away at a time we all really needed it.

The first day was beautiful.  We hiked west on the rim from El Tovar to the Hermit's Rest.  We were glad we started early because the crowds started to build right about when we reached the Hermit's rest (the western most point on the rim trail).  The bus system on the rim is wonderful.  It's nice not fighting for parking spots at every point of interest.  We were also able to just hop on the bus when the kids got tired and still continue site seeing.

The second day the wind picked up.  We spent the morning riding the bus east from the visitor's center to a couple of look out points.  Matthew has a pretty extreme fear of the wind right now so we stayed inside as much as we could.  We then drove towards the east entrance to a really cool look out tower and got suckered into a few things at the gift shop.

Instead of driving back the way we came we decided to take the long way around to our hotel in Williams, AZ.  We drove out the east entrance and enjoyed a beautiful drive through the desert and then through Flagstaff, AZ. We stopped at a deer farm just outside of Williams. It was a tourist trap but a fun one.  The kids thought it was pretty funny when the deer munched on daddy's shirt.  They also had a camel, bison, elk, zebu (whatever those are), and few other birds and animals.  Oh yeah, the kids thought the pot bellied pig was pretty ugly.

We had a good dinner that night at Pancho McGillicuddy's. Pancho for the Mexican food, and McGillicuddy for the bar on the other side of the restaurant (we think). The kids were a bit sick of the car after the trip but they all had a great time.  Even Matthew, who was only slightly traumatized by the wind. Mel was slightly disappointed when the hot tub at our hotel wasn't working. She got a good swim in at the pool though. The biggest problem was trying to keep Alex from falling off a cliff. He just wanted to climb. Maybe when you're older kid.

March 2010

March was one crazy month for the Nielsen family.

Mel had two big school projects but she was a trouper and did a great job.  Melanie also celebrated her 8th birthday.  This tells you how cool Mel is, for her party she asked if we could take her and some friends on a hike (I recommend this over Chuckee Cheese's any day).  We did a pretty difficult hike up Red Rock Canyon.  She actually fell in some water about a third of the way up.  Instead of asking to turn around she kept on going.  Her legs were frozen by the time we reached the top but she was having such a good time with her friends that she forgot to notice.  Due to general conference her baptism isn't until May 1st.  She is very excited about it and is happy that both sets of her grandparents and a couple of her cousins are coming.  She's such a great girl and we are very proud of her.

Matthew went on a field trip with his preschool to a local dairy.  He got to see how milk and ice cream are made and loved the free samples (cookies and cream, mmm.). He also has begun to read.  He never forgets to read us the books he gets from preschool and is so excited when he passes them off. Matthew loves his preschool but his favorite pass time is playing the Wii.  He is particularly good at Mario Kart Wii.  He can beat all of us on just about any of the races and he's only four.  He's obviously had too much practice (we're terrible parents).

Alex loves stealing his sisters head bands and wearing them.  Rob says he just likes copying his older siblings but we all know he just thinks he looks pretty.  His favorite pass times are running out the door whenever it is open and running away from mom as soon as his diaper is off (let's just hope the door isn't open).  He is pure energy and very vocal.  We'll have to keep our eyes on this one.

Rob had an intense month in the PICU and is just happy it is over.  He was able to help a friend from our church who brought her four year old in with a scorpion sting on his face.  The thing was on the poor boys pillow and it got him a couple of times.  The boy is fine but it is pretty hard to watch a kid suffer through something like that.  The family was just grateful to have a familiar face help them through the ordeal.  We will not miss the scorpions.

Gina was busy juggling scouts, kids, birthday plans, and packing boxes here and there (She already has one foot out the door).  It's always tough when Rob is working long hours and we look forward to no more 30 hour shifts for Rob.

February 2010

February was a fun month.

We started out the month with a bike safety course with the cub scouts.  We all had a lot of fun and Robert taught the boys how to change a bike tire and other maintenance tips.

Our church Valentine's party was a blast.  It had a 50's theme so we tried dressing up but we didn't have much to work with.  Matthew did have some rockin' wolf man hair though.  There was dancing, a hula hoop contest, an ice cream eating contest (Mel was so close to winning) and a lot of ice cream sundaes.  A good time was had by all.

The best day of the month is Feb. 28th.  Happy Birthday Robert!!! We dropped the kids off at a sitters house and went ice skating at a local rink.  It was a lot of fun but it reminded us of every high school dance we had been to except on ice skates.  It was a Friday night and got over run by teenagers.  It really made me miss the lake and ponds we had free reign of as kids.

We're just biding our time here in Vegas.  Gina got a jury summons yesterday and is less than thrilled about it.  Robert gets a "get out of jury duty free" card as a resident.  They take enough of his time I guess it is the least they could do.  Who knows, maybe it will be interesting and we can write a CSI Script from it (not likely).

March has come in like a lion here. We had a lot of weird rain storms that everyone blamed on El Nino.  Maybe we'll luck out and Mel's birthday we'll have perfect weather.

Normally I don't add to the journal entry but Matthew said some funny things last night I just had to add.  We were sitting at dinner and a car alarm went off.  Rob thought it was his because Alex has this way of finding his keys and pressing the panic button.  Melanie then asked what a panic button was for.  The discussion went on and she asked if my friend Shanda had a panic button in her car.  Matthew piped in and said, "Santa doesn't need a panic button because he has reindeer to pull his sleigh."  We all had a good laugh.

He later told us that he was not afraid of the dark but he was afraid of the light. This made us scratch our heads.  He meant to say he was afraid of night which is also a little ironic since he's not afraid of the dark.  There's a lot more were that came from.  I should be able to write a book of quotes from Matthew in a few years that will be comparable to Yogi Bera's favorite quotes.

January 2010

The first week of January we visited Utah for some final interviews before the big decision and visits with family and friends.  We stayed with Rob's parents for a couple of days and while he was at an interview Margaret and I took my rug rats to the children's museum in Salt Lake.  We all had a lot of fun but were hungry and exhausted by the end of the day.

The next few days were spent in Cache valley.  Brrrrrr!!! We endured some frigid sub zero temperatures but for some reason we still are addicted to the place.  Grandpa Gunnell kept the kids happy and Gina enjoyed a visit with her best bud (Wendi) and her three awesome kids.

Mel was spoiled and had a sleepover with her cousins Emily and Tessa at the Gunnell farm.  I'm not sure how Grandma Gunnell will react when she sees this picture of all three of them in the flour bin.  I guess it's nothing we didn't do as kids.

Then it was back to school for Melanie and Matthew.  We were crazy keeping them out of school the week after Christmas break.  The good news is Rob has finally come to a decision and has accepted his first official gig at Pediatric Care of Ogden.  He loves the group and is excited to join them in July.  We are also very excited to be closer to home and family.  He's still negotiating minor details of the contract and getting himself licensed in the great state of Utah.

Gina has been busy with her scouting calling.  The last few pictures in January's album are of a special trip we made to Springs Preserve with the scouts.  It is the 100th birthday of Boy Scouts of America this year and they have a traveling exhibit that is crossing the nation.  We were lucky enough to be in one of the cities it stopped in.  We had a lot of fun at Springs Preserve too.

December 2009

Happy New Year!! There are a lot of pictures from the month of December because we had a lot to do.  We took a 2 1/2 day whirl wind trip to Layton for the Nielsen family Christmas Party.  We managed to squeeze in a little time with Gina's parents and sister and made another stop at her brother's on the way home.  Man it's nice to have so many loved ones strategically located along the I-15.

Melanie and Matthew were both in the nativity at the ward Christmas party. Mel was angelic while Matthew was true to form and very bullish.  He does take after his mother.  Alex was running away the whole time so Gina was lucky to get the pictures she did.

We had a lot of visitors in December.  Rob's brother Mike and his family graced us with their presence twice, going to and from Disneyland. They came to church with us and we visited Red Rock Canyon together. They had enough of the Vegas experience though.  You'll have to ask them about their experience at the SunCoast Hotel & Casino. Gina's brother Kevin and his wife Sara stopped in on their way home from their honeymoon that was well over due.  Rob and I didn't get a honeymoon until a few months after our wedding either.  Sara is as bad as Gina at hiding behind the camera so no pics of her this time.  She takes better photos than Gina though. We went to Ethel M's Chocolate factory and Cactus Garden.  We didn't go for the chocolates though. I promise you will never see as many lighted cactuses? cacti?(whatever) as this place has.  Afterwards we went to Nielsen's Frozen Custard for the best ice cream in the world.  Probably because they spell Nielsen's right.

Santa has always been good to us but that's because we have such good kids.  Matthew got a new train and Cranky the Crane to add to his collection.  Mel got the MP3 player she asked Santa for and Alex got some noisy toy he absolutely loves and mom and dad hate.  Santa gave Rob and Gina a Wii gaming system and we have to constantly remind the kids that it was our name on the package and not theirs.  Santa also named Matthew his official hugging machine and presented him a medal with his name, the year, and "Hugging Machine" written on it.  Matthew asked Santa for a hugging machine (he loves hugs) this year but Santa said his elves tried and tried.  They finally came to the conclusion that good hugs come from good people and Matthew needed to share more of his.  Santa presented Melanie with a "Santa's Big Helper" medal this year.  He must have known how helpful she was around here.  She is very responsible and good with her little brothers, even if she is still mad about neither of them being a sister.

Rob has had a busy month in the Pediatric Wards and UMC.  We both can't wait for December to be over.  Tonight is his last call of the month and then he has a vacation week.  Tonight just happens to be New Year's Eve so Gina's home alone updating her web page because she has nothing else to do.  Not like we're party animals anyway.  We just can't wait for him to be able to be home a little more.  Then he can really hurt his arm playing boxing on the Wii.

November 2009

So I'm a little late with November's journal entry but it was such an exciting month I have to write it all down.  The first few pictures in the Nov. album just prove that Melanie really loves spaghetti and our children have no manners whatsoever.

November was a good month for us.  Rob was home quite a bit and we were able to do a lot of fun stuff together.  One of our favorites is always hiking and exploring Red Rock Canyon.  We find something new every time we go and there is never a dull moment.

November 20th was Alex's first birthday.  He had a birthday cupcake with friends at our babysitting co-op (most of the pictures are him trying to figure out what to do with it).  We also had a cake as a family and he proceeded to dump that one in his lap.  He ate every bite nonetheless. He did as every one year old would do, he played with the wrapping paper and boxes while his siblings fought over his new stuff.

We also had a fun afternoon at the Lied Children's Discovery Museum.  The kids loved playing with bubbles, they did surgery with salad tongs, walked on the moon, made paper airplanes, and played sports in front of a green screen.  Good times.

Rob had to go back to the wards at UMC beginning in December (bummer) but he will be home for Christmas.

Gina got called as wolf den leader in the scouts and is just barely getting the hang of it.

Mel is loving school and very helpful at home.

Matthew loves his preschool and we are very proud of his progress.

Alex is Alex.  Into everything, always happy, and always has to have it his way.

October 2009

October is always one of our favorite months.  It's a great time to spend outdoors hiking, we love Halloween, and our wedding anniversary is at the end of the month.  The pictures that have been added are from the fall display at the Bellagio (Our favorite seasonal display. One of the trees was automated and when it started talking it really freaked Alex out.), playing at Springs Preserve, and our cute kids in their Halloween costumes.  Matthew's was an extreme challenge this year but it turned out pretty cool.

Melanie made an amazing Minnie Mouse this year.  She liked her costume so much that she asked if we could keep it just in case she had a little sister that wanted to wear it.  I told her with our luck we'd just keep having boys and mommy's pretty tired as it is.  Mel is doing very well in school and such a great big sister.

Matthew was intent on being a fish this year and we did a pretty good job on the costume considering it was made with sticky glitter foam, staples and an old baseball cap. He had a lot of fun showing his costume at pre-school and wearing it to the ward party and trick or treating.  We're afraid of what he's going to ask to be next year.

Alex wore the traditional Nielsen family Eayor costume and lived up to Eayor's general grumpiness.  He was still cute as a button. We did have a problem keeping his socks on.  We lost both of them at the Springs Preserve Haunted Harvest Halloween Party.

Rob & Gina have officially been married for ten years as of October 29th.  We celebrated with a massage treatment at the Red Rock Resort and Spa.  Followed by bowling with the kids (FYI, never bowl after a massage. My worst game ever).  Then we stayed the night at the resort in a really nice room.  We had to keep Alex away from the wet bar display because they had some kind of sensor that charged you for the items if they were removed from their appropriate spots for more than 45 seconds.  $5 bottle of water anyone?

We also had an interesting weekend dealing with some church investigators.  They turned out to be homeless and whenever we offered substantial assistance to help get them back on their feet with dignity they freaked out on us.  The only help they wanted was to be given a roof over their heads, some food to eat and to be left alone with no rules placed on them.  When we didn't give them what they wanted they moved on to our neighbors.  We spoke with our neighbors who had quickly realized the same thing about the girls.  Eventually the police had to be called to move them on from our community. We learned very quickly that it is impossible to help those that are unwilling to be helped.

On a happier note.  Rob is continuing to interview and we feel really good about the direction we are headed.  A real-estate agent from one of the areas we interviewed has been sending Rob house listings.  I told Rob how counter-productive this is since we still have eight months of residency left.  The boys got to dream a little.  I must admit that after living in a two bedroom apartment for the last eight years it's fun to look at all of the possibilities.

Happy Halloween to everyone. We hope your October was as exciting as ours.

September 2009

September was an eventful month.  We celebrated Labor Day weekend by hiking in the Valley of Fire State Park and taking a dip in Lake Mead to cool off.  We had another memorable family hike around an area called the White Domes.  There are remnants of an old western movie set still standing, a small slot canyon, and a field of Indian marbles along this hike.  It was hot but we got an early start so it was bearable.  Alex slept most of the way in his hiking pack while Mel and Matthew enjoyed playing in the sand and exploring.  On our way around Lake Mead we saw a big horn sheep, but it only had one horn.  He was wandering alone so he must have lost the battle.  Later that day we took a swim in Lake Mead.  It was very windy so Matthew was freaking out a bit.  We finally convinced him that he wasn't going to blow away and he decided he could go for a swim.  The water is extremely warm in Lake Mead.  Just after we convinced Matthew that we weren't going to blow away, Gina was wrestling with the baby and lost hold of the beach umbrella.  Rob had a nice run down the rocky beach and luckily it didn't impale any other swimmers.  A few people even applauded him in his valiant efforts.

Matthew turned four Sept. 9th and we celebrated with a Scooby Doo party.  He still loves Thomas trains but his favorite show now is Scooby Doo.  He got a new bike because he is too tall for his old one.  He also got to go the Chuckee Cheese's  for lunch with his dad.  He thought this was pretty special because Melanie and Alex didn't come along.  He also started preschool on Sept. 8th and he loves every minute of it.

Melanie was selected as student of the month for her class.  She was very excited about this because not only was she student of the month but she and the rest of the second grade classes got to sing at the presentation assembly.  They sang three Jack Johnson songs from the Curious George movie soundtrack.  One of them was also the opening credits song in Napolean Dynamite.  She would come home and sing along with our CD for practice. She knew those songs better than almost everyone, it was super cute.

Alex started walking this month.  It's really funny watching such a small baby walking.  It just doesn't seem right.  He's very hard to keep up with now and extremely good at getting himself into trouble.  His favorite food lately is rocks and he still loves to splash in the cats water dish.

Gina needed a night out so she went and auditioned for a play at a community theater.  She didn't get a part but it was fun to have a night out.  She is official bus driver, arts and craft director, entertainment director, tutor, and family chef.  She keeps pretty busy.

Rob had an intense month in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) but he survived.  His car officially died on him this month so we took on the daunting task of car shopping.  We spent a little more than we wanted to spend but got a really nice used Buick Lacrosse. The first couple of weeks he'd get confused going to work because he couldn't take the freeways in his old car.  Now that he can he doesn't know where he's going.

Rob and I have been team teaching the five year olds in our church and we love our job.  This was our last month because our stake has just been reorganized and we do not know what we will be doing in our new ward yet.  We've loved serving in the primary.  Now that the weather has cooled off we won't even be able to walk to church because we're going to a new building too. We are a little sad to be changing wards nine months before Rob finishes residency but we know a lot of people in our new ward and it won't be completely starting over.  It's a great opportunity to meet new people and spread the gospel in Las Vegas.

August 2009

August has flown by.  It's amazing how many things can change in just one month.

Melanie started 2nd grade this year and loves school.  She loves to read and do math (that obviously comes from Rob) but most of all she loves art (Great Grandpa Fletcher would be proud).  She makes friends easily which is a good thing because there is hardly anyone from her 1st grade class in with her this year.  At home she loves to play computer games, ride her bike, swim like a fish, and torment her brothers (She is particularly good at the latter).

Matthew is excited to start pre-school September 8th.  He has been working on putting on his shoes all by himself and getting himself dressed.  His shoes are often on the wrong feet and his pants are usually on backwards but he gets the job done and is very proud about it.  He will be four Sept. 9th and he has turned his back on Thomas the Tank Engine and wants a Scooby Doo party.  He also announced to me the other day that for Halloween he wants to be a blue fish.  I'm gonna need a lot of help on this one.

Alex has probably changed the most in the last month.  He is 9 months old as of Aug. 20th and has decided to start walking.  He can take up to seven steps unassisted and he's not far from running a marathon.  He is incredibly good at thwarting all child proofing efforts around the house.  He's a child lock Houdini.  He loves his older brother and sister.  He loves it when Mel pushes him around on our riding Thomas toy and drags him around on his belly by his feet (go figure).  He trusts her so much that he'll walk to her now.  He loves tackling Matthew and chasing him around the house on all fours.  The scary thing is he can almost keep up.

Gina is just trying to keep up with all of her kids and Rob's crazy schedule.  If anyone has ideas for a fish costume, send them this way.  It's going to take a couple of months to figure that one out.  She also has fun dealing with the everyday surprises.  For instance, she is rewriting this entire journal entry because just as she was about finished her power went out and erased everything.  She called the power company to find out that someone in the building is moving and the power company got the wrong address to discontinue so they shut of the Nielsen apartment instead.  It was a hot couple of hours before everything got squared away (true story).

Rob had a relaxing month in cardiology (the cardiologists liked to send him to the doctor's lounge with reading material just to get him out of their way).  He's going from long and tedious to crazy fast paced and too many hours in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  He's starting to send out his resume and job hunt.  All we know is we'll probably be in Utah.  We would love to come home to Cache Valley but that all depends on if there's any openings there.  He doesn't want to start his own clinic (kindof a silly thought right out of residency).  He did come across a strong possibility in Layton (that should make his parents happy).

It's time for a cool down in Vegas and we hope it comes sooner than later.  We've been choking on the smoke from the California wildfires and have even noticed a thin layer of ash on everything.  We pray for the fire fighters and the families that have been displaced.  It's been another rough fire season.

Until next month, if they don't cut the power on us again.

July 2009

What a summer vacation.  Where to begin.  Gina took the kids and left Rob for three weeks to get out of the scorching hot desert.  There were cousins, friends, friends of cousins you name it we had it.  Most of the time was spent on the Gunnell farm in Smithfield where Gina and the kids had some time to unwind and let the family come to them for a change.  It was a beautiful couple of weeks with little tv (absolutely no SpongeBob) and no computer games because Gina's parents own a dinosaur of a computer (no complaints here).  Throw in a trip to Bear Lake, parties with family, and visits with friends and we still had time for general relaxation and laziness.  It would take several pages to write about all the great times we had and all the great people we got to be with.  Sufficeth to say a good time was had by all.  Oh yeah, Mel caught her first fish and it was good eatin' (just had to throw that one out there)! That's one more fish than Gina's ever caught.  It was hard to go back to Las Vegas when all was said and done but Toby (the cat) was lonely and if Gina missed one more Sunday of primary they might think she had apostatized. Now that we've beaten the Las Vegas summer we will be enjoying a mild fall and winter while the rest of you are stuck in a snow bank.  This place does have its' perks.

June 2009

June was unseasonably cool for Las Vegas so Gina took advantage of the great weather and did her first hike with Alex.  Normally she doesn't go hiking without Robert but he was in the middle of a very tough month in the PICU and sometimes you just have to seize the day.  We love having Red Rock Canyon so nearby.

For Father's Day we took Rob on an hour and a half long boat Ride on Lake Mead to Hoover Dam.  It was a fun River Boat made specifically for Lake Mead.  It was surprisingly comfortable and a very relaxing way to see the lake and the water side of Hoover Dam.

Rob has his last day in the PICU tomorrow. It has been one tough month.  He's survived and had a lot of good and bad experiences.  All part of learning.  He's just looking forward to a little more sleep.

Sleep is something Gina doesn't get because Alex wakes up at 3 a.m. like clockwork still.  He slept through the night last night.  We're hoping it isn't just a fluke.

Mel is loving summer break.  She is in swim lessons at our community pool.  She is doing very well.  She was watching the level above her the other day and figured out how to do the butterfly kick just from watching. She's incredible.  I don't think I ever figured out that stroke and kick when I was on the swim team.

Matthew just finished his own swim lessons and is still a bit unsure of the floating thing.  He loves to play in the water with his floaty and when he decides to swim he'll swim. He loves having his big sister around to play with and torment. He is looking forward to pre-school this fall.

Alex loves lounging in the water too but mostly he likes being on the move.  He crawls everywhere now.  Mostly, he likes to crawl somewhere to stand himself up.  When it gets a little too quiet he has usually found the cat dish.  The first time he just dumped the water dish and splashed around in that for a while.  The second time He completely dumped out the food dish.  The third time it happened, Rob found him dumping the food into the water and then transferring that to the floor.  We are just grateful none of it has made it to his mouth yet.  It's really only a matter of time.  He also enjoys staring contests with the cat and pulling Matthew's hair.  The latter has him officially labeled "Bad Baby" by Matthew.

April 2009

April was a good month for the Nielsens. We were happy to have visits from Gina's aunt Joyce, her cousin Garry & his family, and Rob's brother Tim along with his wife Andrea. We love visitors. Mel turned 7 Mar. 31st. We can hardly believe the way she is growing.  Matthew is a troublesome three year old but he is a lot of fun.  We had a fun family outing to Boulder City where we got to ride a train.  Matthew was so excited until he heard how noisy it was.  We had a great time.  Alex is growing in true Nielsen fashion.  He started rolling over at 4 1/2 months and started sitting up at 5 months.  He is a wiggle worm and I've decided to start baby proofing now in case he starts to walk as early as Mel and Matthew did.  Gina is so excited to come to her brother's wedding in May.  Unfortunately Rob's schedule won't allow him to make it.  He will have a week off in August so we're hoping to get together with his family then.  He's almost to the one year stretch and there is a lot to do to get him licensed and into his first job.  We'll keep you all up to date.

May 2009

May was an eventful month for our family.  Grandma Gunnell turned the ripe old age of 60 and Gina's family got together for a good old fashioned roast (Did I say old enough times in that sentence? Just kidding ma, you know we love ya).  Gina's brother Kevin was married to who we believe is probably the most beautiful and talented girl in the world.  We Gunnell's marry up. Not only is Sarah an accomplished musician but I hear she's pretty talented at mud wrestling too (It was a bridal shower for the history books).

On a sad note, Gina's grandfather (Vaughn Spackman) passed away at the age of 87.  She was unable to attend the funeral and that made for one grumpy Gina.  Grandma Spackman is doing well and it is amazing the legacy that grandpa left us with.  We are truly grateful for Heavenly Father's plan for us and the peace it brings.

As for happenings in Las Vegas.  Rob finished off a rough month on the pediatric ward at Sunrise Hospital and is heading into an even worse month in the PICU at UMC.  He says he gets yelled at a lot and we're only four days into the month.  It's a good thing he has thick skin.  The good news is this is the last month of his second year.  We're starting to job hunt and looking forward to his last year of residency.

Gina is as busy as ever.  She's out numbered and dreading summer break.  She'll be visiting Cache Valley in July to beat the heat and let the kids run free for a while.

Melanie is still growing like a weed.  She loves school and got straight A's all year long.  She actually goes and finds her math workbook when she gets bored.  She loves math and reading.  She's also turned into quite the little swimmer.  That doesn't really surprise us.  She has always been very athletic.  She just had to get her courage up.

Matthew has been in swim lessons all month.  Though he is not swimming yet, he is very comfortable in the water and loves going down the big slide at the pool all by himself.  He's turned into mommy's little helper, except when he's not.  He's the typical three year old.  Very imaginative, very loving, and very dramatic.

Alex is our little freak of nature.  I say this very lovingly.  He sat up at four months and started pulling himself forward on his belly shortly after.  At five months he started crawling and at six months he started pulling himself to standing position unassisted.  The problem with this is he gets really angry when he falls.  He's a mover and a shaker.  He is trouble with a capital "T".

Well it's been one crazy month.

Our March Vacation Continued

After roaming the crowds in Disneyland we decided to change speeds and head to the beach.  We camped at Leo Carillo State Park just north of Malibu.  The kids had fun exploring the tide pools and walking the beach chasing waves.  We saw whales, dolphins, a sea lion, and a lot of pelicans.  Our campsite was infested with ground squirrels and birds so we had to store all of our food in the van.  These critters were pretty tricky.

If you are wondering about the giant slug thing in one of our pictures it is a sea hare (one of the locals told us).  It's about the ugliest thing I've ever seen.

After beach bummin' and camping we headed for home sweet home.  We met up with Sheri and Blake again in a ghost town called Calico by the CA, NV border.  The kids had a great time playing together while we adults were nickeled and dimed to  death by everything Calico had to offer.  It was all worth it to be with family again.  When we got home we needed a vacation from our vacation but a good time was had by all.

March Madness

If you couldn't tell by the change in our photos, our family had an exciting few days at Disneyland this March.  Rob's week off didn't coincide with Mel's spring break so we did what all good parents do and we ripped her away from her education to enjoy the craziness of Disneyland.  Thanks to Gina's brother-in-law Blake we we're able to afford a great vacation at a time when Rob really needed another get away.

Melanie went on all the big coasters and splash mountain.  She says she will never go on the Indiana Jones ride again because it is too scary but she loved the Tower of Terror in California Adventure.  I think she's nuts.

Matthew didn't like anything that was dark so he was pretty much traumatized the whole time.  He did enjoy Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain though.  His favorite place was the Brother Bear place in California Adventure.  He said it was his adventure.

Alex spent most of his time in the stroller but did ride Small World, Pirates, and the new Finding Nemo ride.  We spent a half an hour in line with him asleep and just as we stepped into this extremely enclosed submarine he wakes up and starts crying. Go figure.  He was thoroughly overstimulated the entire time.

Gina enjoyed Frontierland and Adventureland the most.  She also was a big fan of the Muppet 3-D show.  Melanie will never get her to ride the Tower of Terror with her again.

Rob enjoyed it the most when we left the park and headed for the beach (we haven't got those pictures uploaded yet).  Don't let him fool you, he did have a great time but did get a little sick after riding Space Mountain two times in a row.

We met up with Gina's sister and her family. That was probably the most enjoyable part of the trip.  Mel and Matthew don't get to see their cousins very often so it was a lot of fun to play with Kent and Kristen.  We were even able to have a nice dinner without the kids thanks again to Sheri and Blake.

To be continued....

Don't Blink Or You'll Miss It

I can't believe it is February already.  We've had a non-existant winter compared to the rest of the country. Rob's parents and Gina's dad came and enjoyed the beautiful weather for Alexander's blessing January 18th.  Margaret got a little more than she bargained for when Melanie said she wanted to go hiking (See newest pictures).  We all had a great time and loved having family in town.

Everything else had been pretty uneventful until a few days ago.  Gina got a phone call from her friend who was panicked because her daughter had just been hit crossing the street on the way to school. Gina threw the kids in the car and drove her friend to the accident scene.  The good news is they met her daughter at the scene and not in the ER.  She got off with minor bumps and bruises.  The teenager that hit her was uninsured and white as a ghost. Gina's friend decided not to be too rough on him because he was torturing himself and slapped with a $1400 ticket for not being insured. She was also grateful that he didn't run from the scene like so many in Vegas are tempted to do. Miracles do happen because kids rarely win when they are matched up with a car. Now we tease the little girl that she is the first person we know that has beaten up a car.  It's a good reminder for us to teach our kids how to safely cross the road but also remind ourselves to get off the cell phones and blackberries and pay attention when we are driving.  This little girl was crossing at the proper time and inside the crosswalk.  The boy that hit her looked left and started rolling when she was on his right.  A simple mistake that we've all probably made but it could have taken a life.

Off of the soap box.  We hope you all have a great February.  Happy Valentines.  Do something special for the ones you love.

2008 Year in Review

The Nielsen family has had a year of ups and downs, highs and lows, but it has all been extraordinary.

Robert is half way through his second year of residency and the light at the end of the tunnel is a little closer for him than others we know.  He likes his program and is fortunate to work with some great people.  This year he has seemed to work all over Las Vegas. From the ER to the PICU. He has worked in outreach clinics and on the pediatric floor at two different hospitals. Las Vegas hospitals are apparently the place to be if you get sick because celebrities and famous to semi-famous athletes are always visiting.  I guess there was a big hullabaloo when Mylie Cyrus visited. Robert has seen his share of tragedies and miracles and is very grateful that it is not our responsibility to sort them all out in the end.

Gina had a rough year but it has been a year of great blessings.  Gina found herself in the Emergency room during the Christmas season of 2007 for a miscarriage and underwent emergency surgery for a tubal ligation.  Special thanks to Jay and April Gunnell who kidnapped Mel and Matthew so Gina could recover and to her parents for watching them and spoiling them.  A couple of months later we found out that baby number three was on the way.  Gina spent the first three months sick most of the time and is grateful for patient and loving children that put up with her.  There was a calm in the eye of the storm and we were able to take a wonderful vacation to Bryce Canyon and then join Gina's extended family at Bear Lake for a much needed family visit.  The third trimester proved to be rough as well but the struggles paid off when Alexander was born Nov. 20th 2008.

Melanie is still growing and amazing us at every turn.  She loves math (must have got that from Rob's side of the family).  It's hard to keep clothes on her. If I buy things just her size she's grown out of them in a couple of months.  If I buy them too big she wears them out and gets holes into them before she grows into them.  I think I know how my mom felt about buying clothes for me now.  Mel is doing very well in school and has a lot of good friends.  She still asks if we can visit her friends in Hershey but she really wants to move closer to her cousins and grandparents.  Mel has a few chores that she earns money for and she told me she is saving up so she can take us to Disneyland.  What a sweet heart.

Matthew is also growing like a weed and is a carbon copy of his mother when it comes to his personality.  He is very strong willed and tells it like it is.  Tactics we used with three year old Melanie don't work with Matthew.  Gina was determined she would not be changing diapers on two children so the battle of wills began.  Matthew was just as determined not to listen to a word that mom and dad were saying.  Matthew was potty trained by the age of three on his terms and only because it was his idea.  He is now going by himself.  Our next hurdle will be when he goes to preschool and insists on removing his pants completely to go and also his tendency to stand on the toilet seat and squat in order to get the really hard stuff out (there's a visual for y'all).  I wonder what his teacher will think of that? Believe it or not, Matthew is a tender little guy and can always be counted on for a hug, kiss, and a high five (in that order).

Alexander only had a month to enjoy 2008 and he slept through most of it (except at night).  He does like the night life.  We better get him out of Vegas as quickly as possible.

We hope to find all is well with our friends and family. We hope that despite the news stories, the struggles, the election and apposing political views (Gary and Katie I'm talking to you) that you all can look back on 2008 feeling as blessed as Robert and I have.  Thanks for the love and support and we pray that 2009 will be another extraordinary year.

Happy Birthday to Alexander Robert Nielsen

Alexander Robert Nielsen was born Novembert 20th, 2008.  He weighed 8 lbs. 13 oz. and was 22 in. long.  Mom is doing well except Alex keeps her up all night and all she really wants is some sleep.  Rob has Thanksgiving week off and Gina's mom is coming for a week after that to help out.  We are grateful for all the love and support we have received from our friends and family.  Take care.

Election Day 2008

It's election day and while the rest of the country is engrossed in finding out who the next president will be, Rob and Gina are just glad that Nevada had early voting because Gina can barely walk right now, let alone stand in line.  We've been screening our calls because the majority have been for the campaign.  We feel very popular.  We have had recordings of Mitt Romney, Joe Biden, Sarah Palin, Rudy Guilianni, John McCain and Barack Obama on our answering machine. If you don't get through, please leave a message so we know you are not running for president, state senate, school board member, or state district judge.  It has been interesting living in two hotly contended battle ground states for the last two presidential elections.  I'm ready to head back to Idaho where, even if it's not perfect, politics are pretty cut and dry.

So here is a poll of our own.  Gina thinks the baby has dropped, pinching nerves in her legs and making walking very difficult.  Statistics have shown that our babies come pretty close to their due dates.  Gina wants to go early, therefore,  she thinks she will be two weeks late.  So with way too much information, will the baby:
a) be a week early?
b) come right on time?
c) be late?

This is totally scientific and anyone who votes for "late" will be drawn and quartered.

Family Update

We had an unusually hot September this year for Las Vegas.  We did finally have a cold front come through that dropped us to highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's for a couple of days. They even reported snow flurries here in Summerlin (yeah right). No worries.  This week we're back to normal with highs in the 80's.  We would love to see some snow.  It is definately too hot here.

Matthew turned three Sept. 9th and was spoiled with more Thomas the Tank Engine stuff.  The kid is a little obsessed.  Thanks to his grandparents he had an extra special birthday.  He is even making progress with the whole potty thing.

Mel had her first field trip in first grade this month.  I remember going to the post office or Ross Park Zoo in Pocatello.  She went to the Secret Garden at the Mirage to see the dolphin habitat and all the lions and tigers. I guess there are some perks to living in a big city.

Rob is on a night float month. Meaning: Sunday through Wednesday he goes to work at 4:30 p.m. and gets home for breakfast around 7 or 8 a.m. He then puts earplugs in, covers the window for darkness and sleeps until 3 p.m.  He has Thursday through Saturday off but his sleep schedule is so screwed up he's pretty much worthless until the afternoon to evening hours on the weekends.  This is his last night float month and for that we are very grateful.

Gina feels like her due date should have been yesterday but her physician assures her she has a month and a half to go and she is very healthy despite the pinched nerve, acid reflux, insomnia and general fatigue.  At least the weather is a little better.

Life in general is pretty good.  We try not to watch the news and keep a copy of conference handy just in case we get too caught up in politics and spin.  We're very grateful for parents who taught us the right way to live and family and friends who have helped us so much along the way.

Baby Due Date

There are certain members of Rob's family who like to wager on tha actual due date of our new arrival.  I will give you some inside information before anyone else takes a guess.  Melanie came one day before her due date and Matthew came two days before his.  If we go with the pattern it will be on Nov. 16th.  Suzanne, I know it's your birthday and everything on the 22nd but if my baby comes late I'm coming after you.  Mel was 8 lbs. 11 oz. and Matthew was 9 lbs. 2 oz.  I'm voting that the baby comes two weeks early so I can have a nice seven pound baby for once.

Family News

Gina has survived the hottest summer of her life in Las Vegas and still has three months until baby-boy Nielsen is due.  We're counting down the days but we still have no idea what to name him.  Mel is disappointed she isn't getting a baby sister but she told us that her daddy could just go back to work at the fireworks factory and she could get a hundred baby sisters (that's another story).

Rob has survived his intern year and has two more to go.  His schedule is a little better but we still look forward to the day where it feels like neither of us is in school even though technically we've graduated.  He doesn't complain much about the heat but gets reminded constantly that he gets out of his air conditioned car and walks straight into an air-conditioned building.

Mel just started the 1st grade and is doing great.  She enjoyed seeing family and friends this summer (particularly Sierra) and playing at Bryce Canyon.  She is also turning into quite the swimmer. She's an active kid and always keeps us on our toes.

Matthew is coming up on his 3rd birthday this September and has finally decided to try the potty.  It's been an up-hill battle because he is as stubborn as his mother and everything has to be his idea.  We're making progress and the little guy is always full of surprises.  His favorite past times are playing with trains and cars.  He also has quite the knack at identifying the make of a car by its' symbol.  He asked me what kind of car was parked outside once and when I told him I didn't know he informed me that it was a Toyota.  He was right.  He'll quiz me when we go on walks and if I miss one he will always correct me.  I'll have to try and get it on camera one of these days.

We'll keep you up to date when half-Nielsen #3 arrives.  The due date is November 19th so we doubt we'll be making any trips home around the holidays.  Take care.
