The Peruvian Amazon Rainforest really notched up the heat factor for us!  Our guide, Alan, had us up from 4:30am & on the trail before sunrise (to try and avoid the afternoon heat wave).  On that morning walk we observed piranhas & fed them some crackers (they aren’t dainty eaters either) & noticed a fresh jaguar track in the mud.  We searched for caimans at night in a canoe and found many along the banks of the Tambopata River as well as Jungle bugs, insects, frogs, howler monkeys and very interesting other sounds too on evening walks.  Accommodations were rustic yet had modern conveniences like a shower and sink with running brown water from the river.  All meals were very good and we supplemented them with ice cold beer (just for lunch and dinner).  A visiting herpetologist found 6 snakes in 2 days and presented an impromptu lecture after lunch on the dining room table.  We also visited a nearby farm where many of our meals had come from and tasted vine ripened fruit.  The Macaw at the camp would come out during soccer games and sit on the goal post and make many different bird sounds that seemed to be consistent with the field play, he is affectionately known as “Wally” by all at Explorer’s Inn.  We were both very glad our agenda included the rainforest when we were on the boat back to a cooler climate (doubts loomed largely at our arrival though). 

   Thanks for checking into the web-site from time to time, hope you were entertained!  I cannot remember putting my body through so much in just 2 ½ weeks and having so much fun…I am sincerely thankful I was fortunate enough to share it with such a good buddy of 50 years as Keith (Rock).

   The Wed. journey began with a 4:45am wake-up call in and to the train by 6:23, leaving at 6:53 for a 4 hour trip that lasted 6 due to some train issue / deal.  After checking in at the Machu Picchu Sancuary Lodge and having lunch we entered MP at two O’clock and were sort of kicked out at 5pm (but not arrested).  It IS awesome to say the very least!  There were only a few rain drops from time to time and mostly overcast (allowing for great diffused lighting).  In addition, this is the tail end of the good weather…so not too many of the doggone touristas to obstruct photography efforts.  We split up and attacked from separate perspectives.  As you can see the skies were threatening but made for dramatic results.  That evening, after freshening up a bit, ok a lot, we enjoyed happy hour (actually it’s been one big HH) and had a tasty salmon dinner with some white wine. 

   When we finished breakfast the next morning, to our amazement, the MP line was extremely long and we needed to purchase tickets too.  All that went surprisingly fast and we were in the park once again for another 4 hours.  We both took separate paths again, Doug to the and Keith to Wayna Picchu.  Keith will probably give you just a few highlights of his little morning hike/adventure.  Both were two very different experiences and thoroughly enjoyed.  Leaving MP at 1:30p for Aquas Caliente by bus on an interesting switchback road we ate there and again left, although this time via the MP Backpacker train for Ollantaytambo, about 2 hours away for Thurs. nights stay.

 

The adventure continues with the bus from Arequipa to Puno taking only 7 wonderful hours that were fairly uneventful.  After reaching 15,000 feet and heading all the way down to 12,500 at Puno the RockChuckers could definitely breathe easier…literally!  This altitude requires the usual sunglasses, lotion and coca tea to acclimate.  After arriving in the lake city of Puno, we immediately went over to the Saturday Market, for what appeared to be for locals only.  There’s everything from fresh fruit to lumber to goats heads.  This was the “real deal” for dos gringos.  That evening Keith and I enjoyed dinner / colorful show / & a CD all for 150 Soles = $50 US.

Sunday we visited the that are floating and the natives appear to be living in reed huts and living on a diet of a lot of fish.  That afternoon we reached where our cultural exchange occurred with a family in their home.  It is the least commercial and the most fun!  Hiking to the top of their was a chore at this altitude.  Doug was aided with an old horse for about ½ of it and the Peruvian cap that he sports was knitted by our hostess.  Her kitchen floor was dirt although the food was 1^st rate and we almost knew what we were eating most of the time.  They spoke their own language, so there was a severe gap in communication for 24 hours.  We did sleep on reed beds, but there was a store bought mattress on top.  Electrical wires were coming out the wall in places, but not to worry…of course they didn’t work…we used a candle. 

The next day we left for & more hiking around it to lunch (with out the aid of auxiliary transportation).  The lunch was great with an overlook of on a picture perfect afternoon.  P.S. The men are the ones who knit. 

Monday night we were upgraded to a side resort and ate Lomo Saltado, a fine mixture of steak, veggies and special sauce.

Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru with over one million residence.  It was founded in 1540 by a Spaniard who was a follower of Pizzaro.  We found the city to be very interesting with a lot of diversity, history and culture, but most noticable was how clean it is.  Late one night we observed workers picking up trash and sweeping the streets by hand...and the very next morning they were still cleaning the streets!  The high-lights of our brief stay included the Museum of the Ice Maiden who was discovered in 1995, the 400 year old and world's largest self-contained monastary and the three vocanoes that surround the city.  Finding food hasn't been any problem here and we're yet, two very regular guys and hope to stay that way throughout.  Today, Friday, we took a four hour city tour and are ready to venture onward to Lake Titicaca and the small city of Puno on Saturday.  As you can see, the locals are very friendly and willing to contribute to our photo dosier with out any problems.

Adelante amigazos! You'll love Peru. Have you tried drinking "pisco" yet? When in Lima, there are some museums with mind-boggling artifacts. Hopefully, the Shining Light group won't give you a welcome! Also there is a catacombs under Lima...not sure if it's open to the public anymore.
