I'm a few days late with her 3-month update since we we've been out of town.  So officially Kate is 3 months and 4 days old now.  She has changed SO much in the past month ... it's amazing!  I would say the biggest changes seemed to take place between week 12 and 13.  She is smiling, cooing and squealing all the time now which has been a lot of fun.  She is so much more engaged with the world around her and is starting to even entertain herself for short periods of time.  Mainly she does this on her playmat.  She can lay there for a good 15 or 20 minutes staring up at the toys hanging above her head.  She occasionally will get a hold of one but she's not really intentionally grabbing for anything yet.

Kate has been a busy girl these past few weeks.  The three of us went down to Albuquerque a few weeks ago to see my parents.  Russ had a business trip to Amsterdam and London so Kate and I hung out with the parents/grandparents while he was gone.  Then we drove back up on our own.  She did GREAT on her first roadtrip.  She pretty much slept the whole way just waking up to eat and then back to sleep.  NaNau and PaPau had so much fun playing with her especially since she has become so smiley.  After Russ got home from his trip, we packed again and headed to Phoenix.  We've had tickets to the U2 concert since before we even knew about Kate but it was a perfect excuse to go see lots of old friends and introduce them to the girl.  It was so good to be there (and enjoy the warm weather, although Kate was not a big fan of that part).  She did great on both the flight out and back.  (Is it too early to declare her the perfect traveler??)  Her favorite part of the trip was getting to meet her BFF Lola.  Lola is the daughter of good friends of ours (Rodney and Vikke) ... they adopted her from the same agency we went through.  Lola is exactly two weeks older than Kate so they really have no choice but to be BFF's.  We got plenty of crying pictures of them ... and although they're both smiling, it was pretty much impossible to get both of them to smile at the same time.  Maybe next time.  Kate also enjoyed a party thrown in her honor by her "Aunt" Mary.  She held up for almost the entire 4 hours and was passed from person to person without much fuss from her ... until the end.  Towards the end she had had enough and let out a loud, shrill scream letting us know she was done and ready to leave.  Poor girl was absolutely exhausted from all the excitement ... she slept great that night!  Speaking of sleeping, she's still a good sleeper at night.  We started trying to adjust her schedule last week by sneaking in a late-night bottle around 11pm. She goes to bed around 7:30pm and hadn't been waking up again to eat until 3:30am.  Of course that doesn't really match up with our schedule so we've been trying to fill her up again before we go to bed.  So far it's working pretty well.  She still goes to bed at 7:30pm and then takes another bottle about 11pm but doesn't wake up for any of it; and then she sleeps the rest of the night.  Naptime during the day is another story ... she seems to be a catnapper.  We're working on that.

She didn't have a 3-month check-up (she'll have one at 4 months) but she is growing fast!  We weighed her on our friends' baby scale and she was 12 lbs, 6 ounces (with a dry diaper on).  It seems that I'm putting away clothes she's outgrown every day.  Her hair is getting longer and there's more of it.  I'm wondering if it's going to be manageable in a few months!!??

So there's the update for this month.  She is becoming more and more fun every day and we are so thankful to have her in our lives.  It's been fun to share her with so many people.  Now if we can just get to Texas and share her with her Texas family!

Hard to believe that Kate is two months old today!  (And that two months and two days ago, we had no idea how much our lives were about to change!)  She is doing well and growing fast.  Her 2-month well-check was yesterday and she is up to 10 pounds, 9.5 ounces and 22 1/2 inches long.  So she's practically doubled her birth weight of 5lbs 6oz and has grown 4 inches in two months.  No wonder she cries and fusses . . . I would think growing that fast would hurt!  She's becoming more alert and is spending more and more time awake.  She's settled into a good routine and her eating times are like clockwork.  Thankfully she is doing really well at night and only wakes up once to eat.  We're still working on naptime during the day and actually staying asleep without her waking up crying and wanting to be held for the rest of her nap.  She is tolerating tummy time more and more and is doing a good job of raising her head.  Although, since she would sleep on her stomach if we let her (and they often had her sleep on her stomach in the NICU), she often just dozes off when I put her on her tummy which means I get to wake her up to move her back to her back. 

Other milestones this month . . . she is cooing a lot and occasionally smiles although she still doesn't smile responsively very often.  She had her first outing to the zoo and could not have cared less about where we were.  (Neither could her friend Leah but the parents had a good time!)  We had our first baby shower and Kate was showered with so many generous gifts and celebrated in style (see Sushi and Cigars Shower album).  And she sleeps in her own crib in her own room all night long (except for her one night feeding)!  That's all I can think of at the moment for the "events" of her second month. It's actually been a fairly low-key month which has been good for all of us and has allowed us to settle into a good routine and spend time just getting to know our precious girl!  Oh and another "milestone" of the month is that no one has called her Katie.    

Kate is getting really big and more expressive every day. Today we took a trip up to Denver to visit the zoo. She enjoyed it, I guess. A great day together as a family. We'll have some zoo pics posted soon.

Kate is one month old!  Considering she is still supposed to be in utero, I’d say she’s doing pretty well.  For those who don’t know, Kate came as quite a surprise.  On July 17^th, we were getting ready to meet some friends for dinner and a movie (Away We Go – still haven’t seen it!) when my phone rang about 5pm.  It was our social worker from our adoption agency who said a birthmom wanted us to adopt her baby (unborn at that point), she was 34 weeks pregnant and her water had just broke.  Talk about your head spinning!  We scratched plans for dinner and the movie while we pulled ourselves together and mentally prepared for a baby in the next 72 hours (that was the doctor’s prediction).  Russ canceled his trip to Texas scheduled for the next morning – he was going to surprise his mom for her 65^th birthday/retirement party.  Kate Emerson Debenport was born Saturday morning, July 18^th at 9am at 5 pounds, 6 ounces and 18 ½ inches long.  Being a 34-weeker, she spent her first 12 days in the NICU at St. Luke’s in Denver.  But she has done great and proven to be a feisty little girl from the day she was born.  Surprisingly she didn’t require any oxygen after birth (which is pretty common for preemies born in CO due to our high elevation).  She mainly stayed in the NICU to learn to feed properly and eat enough.  We were able to bring her home on July 30^th and she’s been running the household ever since.   (Not really, but it feels like it sometimes.)  At her 1-month check-up she weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 ¾ inches long.  She’s definitely packing on the pounds and the inches!  She eats well (never leaves a drop in her bottle) and sleeps pretty well too (occasionally we even get a 5-hour stretch at night). Kate does lots of “baby smiles” and has plenty of fun facial expressions.  She often furrows her brow as if she’s studying something very closely.  Her favorite places to be are in someone’s arms or in the sling.  We have loved every moment of this first month and are so blessed to have Kate in our family!

(Oh and just to save everyone from asking . . . her name is Kate. Just Kate. Not Katie, not Katherine, not Katelyn, not Katarina, not Kataphasia or anything else. Just Kate. )

So, you must have heard about our daughter! Kate Emerson joined our family on July 18, 2009 in Denver. She arrived a few weeks early with 5 lbs and 6 ozs of goodness. We are loving having her in our family. Enjoy the photos!
