The boys’ tennis team did an outstanding job at their first match yesterday. Rookies Tanner Craig, Andrew Bates, and Andre Hinnant won one game in their singles matches; Juan Zavala worked very hard to fight for each point; and seasoned veterans Darrick Lawrence, Kyle Bailey, and Jahlil Applewhite performed well against fierce competition and slamming serves.
In doubles, Travon and Jerome Smith joined Darrick Lawrence and Kyle Bailey for a match of the ages. Ahkeem Kelly and Tanner Craig fought to win two games.
But the MVP of the match was DeAndre Rouse, who won five games. He battled his opponent to the very end.
“I am very proud of the way these boys played,” said Coach Claire Herrington. “I have no doubt we will have a victory under our belt next time.”
In the second game of the season, the girls soccer team came out strong and played with more determination and perseverance as they took on Greenfield’s Junior Varsity Team. We saw stellar passing in the midfield between Itzel Rivera, Maria Vasquez, Caslin Lee, Kyra McNiell, and Preciosa Ortiz, which was a clear indicator of the girls’ willingness to learn and develop the skills they need to win. Coach Coetzer was proud that the girls did not stop playing until the end and did not stand back for their more skilled opponents.
Mr. Coetzer sends a special shout out to Jahdai’ Dockery, Brandy Taylor, Florisela Guttierez and the rest of the defense for being the back bone of the team. And also special kudos to the team’s fearless goalkeeper, Marylynn Jones.
