Welcome to the photo site of the Sarasota Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America.  We meet monthly in season at Longwood Park, 6050 Longwood Blvd, Sarasota 34243. Upcoming events and other information may be found below and also at our official site www.sarasotasumi-e.org.  You don't have to sign in to Shutterfly to see the photos on this site.

Click on "Pictures" at the top of this page to see photos of past classes and events.  You may download or order prints of any of the photos, or upload your own! There's also a calendar of events and a message board.  

Dates for three of the the 2011-2012 classes are set: Shozo Sato November 14-16, 2011, Professor Ju January 16 and 17,2012, and Danny Han-Lin Chen March 5-7, 2012.

2011-2012 MEETINGS/PROGRAMS/WORKSHOPS

SEPTEMBER 26, 2011 MEETING

PROGRAM:  SUMI-E ON FABRIC – PAINT YOUR OWN T-SHIRT!  MARILYN OFFER will show a technique for painting on fabric.  This is a “hands on” meeting where members will paint a sumi-e design on a t-shirt.

 

OCTOBER 31, 2011 MEETING

PROGRAM:  GYOTAKU – PRESENTED BY HEATHER FORTNER.  Guest artist, HEATHER FORTNER, will demonstrate the oriental art form of Gyotaku – fish (gyo) rubbings (taku) using actual fish to create an ink or pigment image with variations in color and shading. Members that painted shirts at the September meeting are encouraged to wear their "art work" or bring their T-shirt to hang on our "show and tell" clothes line. We will not have our regular 'show and tell' at this meeting.

 

NOVEMBER 14, 15, 16, 2011 WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY SHOZO SATO

SHOZO SATO, a renowned master of traditional Japanese ink painting, received the Order of Sacred treasure from the Emperor of Japan for his contributions in teaching Japanese traditions.  He is the author of numerous books including, “Sumi-e, The Art of Japanese Ink Painting”.  Details of subjects and registration will be in the Chapter Newsletter.

 

NOVEMBER 28, 2011 MEETING

PROGRAM:  TARASHI KOMI.  LINDA BEAUDOIN will demonstrate this Sumi-e technique using sized paper and “floating or pooling ink or pigment on water.

 

DECEMBER 12, 2011 HOLIDAY LUNCHEON HELD AT THE BIRD KEY YATCH CLUB AT 11:00 AM.

PROGRAM:  THE ART OF JAPANESE GIFT WRAPPING BY KIMIKO IKEDA AND YUKIKO BROWN

 

JANUARY 23 CHINESE NEW YEAR - THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON

JANUARY 23 and 24, 2012 WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY PROFESSOR I-HSIUNG JU

I-HSIUNG JU states, “... a Chinese artist is not only a painter, but also a poet and a philosopher.”  In this workshop Professor Ju will teach the subjects of flowers and birds with backgrounds in his traditional, masterful style.

 

JANUARY 30, 2012 MEETING

PROGRAM: ZEN WORD CALLIGRAPHY.  KEIKO ROMERSTEIN will demonstrate this unique form of calligraphy.

 

FEBRUARY 27, 2012 MEETING AND MEMBERS ART SUPPLY SALE

PROGRAM:  “DRAGONS - MY FAVORITE ANIMAL” BY FREDERICA MARSHALL.  Frederica Marshall, brush painting artist, teacher, lecturer and author will entertain us with the legends, symbolism and tales of the wonderful dragon.

 

MARCH 5, 6, 7, 2012 WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY DANNY HAN-LIN CHEN.

DANNY HAN-LIN CHEN, member of the Federation of Canadian artists, will bring his strong love of nature to our workshop, teaching shorebirds such as sandpiper, curlew as well as birds of prey.  He will also cover washes, backgrounds, and special effects.  Visit www.chensgallery.com

 

MARCH 26, 2012 MEETING

PROGRAM:  PO’MO  JUDY McENANEY will demonstrate the art of Po’Mo or “splash painting” painting on Shikishi boards. 

 

APRIL 2, 2012 SPRING LUNCHEON AND INSTALLIATION OF OFFICERS


 The April Spring Lunch and Installation of the 2012-2013 officers will be Monday, April 2nd at 11:30 A.M. at the Super Buffet VI, 5471 Fruitville Road (Sarasota Crossing Plaza). The price for the buffet, beverage, tax and tip will be $10.00 per person. The money will be collected at the restaurant.

Dongfeng Li workshop - revised schedule of subjects - March 21-23, 2011

 Li writes:

March 21st
  Wisteria

Learn how to paint the petal, leave and branch
How to make the arrangement
How to make the composition
Make a peony painting
We will learn the brush techniques, techniques of color and wash, using glue to paint, etc.
  
March 22nd
·  Lotus and leave
·  Landscape-Trees
 Rocks and use of wash
Learn how to work with rocks, trees. The techniques of brush stroke and wash. How to use the wash on rocks. Making the small scene with tree and rocks
  
March 23rd
·  Landscape-Waterfall
  Mist
Learn how to paint the mist and waterfall. Learn to use brush stroke and ink wash in the landscape.
Learn the rubbing and printing technique to make interesting texture in landscape.
We will explore putting everything together and learn to make small scene of landscape.
  
Objectives
·  Handle the construction of the subjects in the workshop
·  Learn the techniques of ink, brush strokes and color
·  Learn the fundamental concept of composition
·  Learn to explore the new way to paint
  
I want to clean out my inventory, there are some art supplies available in the workshop and they are in a very reasonable prices.

APRIL 25   Closing Luncheon and Installation Of Officers

Exhitit at Bay Preserve - RSVP for reception - Drop off August 31

The beautiful Bay Preserve is located on the water behind Historic Spanish Point, and is run by the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast.  Robin Roberts of the Foundation offered to let our sumi-e club hold a three-month exhibit there, and we accepted.  

Jill Chin and I will coordinate the event.  Robin has printed postcards and emailed them to several hundred Foundation members.  Pick up a couple of these cards at the reception to mail to your friends.  I'll also have them available when you drop off your paintings and will distribute a few at our September meeting.  

Maps to help you find the Preserve are in the September newsletter below.  I hope to see you at the receiving Tuesday morning, August 31.  Here are the key dates:


Receiving: Aug. 31, 2010 9:30 am to 11:30 am  -  No entrance fee since the Preserve isn't charging the club!
Reception: Sept. 3, 2010 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Exhibit dates: Sept. 3 to Nov. 30, 2010
Pick up: Nov. 30, 2010 9:30 to 11:30am

The Christmas luncheon was a fun event

I think we all enjoyed the food and the socializing at Treviso.  Kinko and Marjorie won orchids.

November meeting

On November 30 Camille Pyatte explained to our group how to photograph our artwork, upload it and edit it on the computer.  See the pdf document of her handout in the "Other Documents" section at the bottom of this page.

Reception at Asian Arts and Decor

On Thursday November 19 we had a reception at Asian Arts and Decor, 5437 Fruitville Road in Sarasota.  There was a good crowd.  Several of our members are exhibiting their sumi-e work. The paintings will stay on exhibit through the end of December.
