Sea Base Update:

Today Saturday November 24th was another good catch up day at the Sea Base.  Rags along with Dave and crew started cleanup of the debris caught between the barge and shore line.  James started to add antifreeze to winterize the Sea Dart.  Mr K started welding the barge connection to the standoff for the down river side.  This past Wednesday the pilings that Rags had secured for the Bollards were hammered in by a back hoe for more support.  All and all a good week for the Sea Base. Thanks to all that participated since the Storm.

Storm - Sea Base November 1 2012:

II just got back from the Sea Base and it's very bad.  I do think with a coordinated effort of all crew members we can get everything set again.  I have outlined a sort of starting plan listed and will post pictures soon.  The up river side seems pretty well intact and the "Sea Horse" seems ok. First I believe we should move the Dart along side with stern in deeper water so we don't have to worry about the rocks behind her.  2. We should call PSE&G and shut down electric to pole.  Then we should move all land boats to left corner.  If we can get large equipment it would be easier, but we can do it with what we have available now.  3. All attachments to barge need to be removed.  (Down River Beam and Ramp )  Figure next higher than normal tide - a set date and time. Lighten the Barge on shore side as much as possible and pump her out.  Try and tow off with Dart.  Also see if we can get some piece of land equipment to push at same time.  We need to work all together and get this done.

Storm- "Sea Dart II"

Yesterday I checked on the Sea Base to make sure everything is secured for "Sandy".  The small sailboat is secured with a chain and lock to the mast.  The straps were tied tighter.  Extra line has been placed on Dart and in water sailboat.  The Barge lines and cable were check and all are secure. The wind was from NNE like last time so except for high tide all should do well.  Everyone be safe and stay indoors.

Saturday September 11 2010 Work Party:

Well the Labor Day Weekend Holiday is over.  Time to get back to work.  The Sea Dart has a topside inspection this year and a few items need to be taken care of.  The tide will be right this Saturday so the first thing is turn her around and berth and secure her the correct way.  I am unable to accomplish this by myself and need assistance. No Scouts were present this past Wednesday so Mr H and myself cleaned up and secured the boat deck and put items away.  This weekend is "All Hands"!  Also some items were left from the Long Cruise.  Please check to see if you are missing anything.

Recieved From Past Ship-228 Crew Member:

Greetings to all on the Sea Dart II! I was extremely saddened to here of John Nolan’s passing this past week but I was also glad to see that the Sea Dart II is alive and well and training the youth of today to become the adults of tomorrow. I did run across the newer website at shutterfly and found out you folks just did your summer cruise. I hope Mr. Handly didn’t burn any breakfast pancakes. I also hoped nobody missed their watches. Awesome trip and hope you all have many stories to tell and worked together to enjoy what has to offer. Believe me for any of you who went, those summer cruise memories will last you a life time.

I live here in Florida but I always remember the Sea Dart and what it means to be youth as well as an adult learning aboard her (1978 to 2003). I still retain my 100 ton inland license thanks to the many inspirational people on the Sea Dart.

Please keep the Sea Dart in ship shape, as I know you are, so in the future she can be to others what she is to you now. She is the perfect Sea Scout ship.

Good cruising, good learning, God be with you all and be safe in all your sea adventures.

Carl Rybarczyk

Saturday August 28 2010 - Fund Raiser Cruise:

This past evening Sea Scout Ship-228 hosted an evening Cruise to New York Harbor for New Jersey Boy Scout Troop 191.  Each of the Boy Scouts spent time behind the helm piloting East on the Arthur Kill River and past the Statue of Liberty.  The "Sea Dart II" also made a detour in Bayonne Harbor to see up close the Cruise Ship berth there.  The Scouts and Leaders then traveled up the Hudson River and got a close as we could, outside the restrictions, to the Intrepid and the Concord Airplane that sits on the barge at the Museum.  The Sea Dart II came about and then headed down river on the Jersey side crossed over to the Brooklyn shore and up to the U.N. Building.  As the beautiful evening was coming to a close we came about once more and headed for our home berth. The setting sun created a brilliant red sky as we headed in.  Thank You Troop 191 for your generous donation to Ship-228.

Saturday August 28 2010 - Fund Raiser Cruise:

This up and coming Saturday Ship-228 will have a New York City Fund Raising Cruise aboard the Sea Dart II.  Tomorrow Wednesday the 25th of August Scouts are needed to prepare for it.  Please meet at the Sea Base at 10:00hrs to help Mr K and Skipper Dennis.  Also Sea Scout who had taken pictures of our Long Cruise and would like to share them please send to Ships email address so they can be posted.  -  SeaScoutShip228@aol.com

Ship-228 Returns From Long Cruise:

The Sea Dart II returned yesterday from it's Long Cruise in the North East.  The Scouts visited Old Saybrook, Vineyard Haven, Block Island-Rhode Island, Green Port-Long Island, Milton-Conn.  Our Crew was joined by 3 Scouts from other Ships.  On the Cruise each Scout was "Captain of the Deck" or "Galley Chef" throughout the voyage.  The Scouts learned piloting by the vessels electronics and charts.  Although the weather was nasty at our home port the cruise was blessed by the "Sea Gods".  We had calm seas and nice weather.  On our return trip we landed at Milford, Conn. for the afternoon Tuesday before heading home and were visited by a contingent from Ship-721 of Milford.  They were guest on board that evening. Ship-228 plans on having area Ships visit us in every port.
On our trip home the Scouts reflected on the trip and are making plans for the 100 year celebration of Sea Scouting.  Ship-228 is planning to visit the Baltimore Inner Harbor Sea Scout Gam.

Long Cruise East Coast:

You don't have to be a member of our Ship to participate in a Long Cruise.  If you a are a regestered male Scout or Leader you can join us!  The Cruise includes Sea Scout Training daily by qualified Instructors.  It include all your daily meals plus healthy snacks and drinks.  You will learn about small Ship handling along with Piloting, Weather, Safety and hands on Navigation. The Cost is nominal.  So if you are a Scout 14 -20 or a Train BSA Scouting Leader - Join Us!  For more information call or email us at SeaScoutShip228@aol.com

Ship-228 Wednesdays: Update

Now that School is on it's Summer Break if any Scouts  are interested in helping out at the Sea Base on Wednesdays please let me know.  I will be there at 10:00 hrs. to 14:00 hrs.  I believe it will be too hot to be on deck working but I will still be present  Mr K

Sea Base Barge:

Yesterday Ship-228 & Ship-243 Crews pitched in to finish repair of the Barge Cables.  Dennis and I would have never completed the job if it wasn't for the assistance.  I was going to list the names that help yesterday and along the way but you know who you are.  I just love team work.  Thanks again guys........ Bill

July 4th Macy's Fireworks Cruise:

Well another 4th Celebration has passed!  The Sea Dart had a full Crew of Scouts, Leaders and Guests on board.  Actually a total of 31!  Again we had front row seats to see a wonderful display and listen to the Simulcast on 1010 Wins.  Although the Upper Harbor was crowded with small craft the Scouts still had time behind the helm under the watchful eye of Skipper Dennis. Let us as Americans not forget the reason for this celebration and not forget the Soldiers in Iraq who preserve our Freedom.

Red Bull Air Race World Championship:

All I can say is "Wow"!  The Sea Dart II with Sea Scouts and Families on board managed to view the race up close today.  It was exciting to have the pilots of these fantastic "flying machines" dive  out of the sky overhead and run the pylons at aprox 30' above the waters of New York Harbor.  Keeping station was a breeze with Skipper Dennis and Mr K behind the helm.  Front row seats..... :)  On return to the Sea Base Skipper Dennis graduated to "Captain Dennis" with an unassisted berthing again with kid gloves.  One Big Adda Boy from me.  A wonderful Fathers Day for all........Mr K

E-Mail Received This Morning:

I received this email through this site:

Long ago (1974-1983) I was crew on Sea Dart II, was Boatswain 1978-79 and reached Quartermaster.  I came across a Sea Scout website last week, and eventually found the shutterfly page with your current site.  Glad to see the Ship is still going strong.  I had plenty of time red-leading the bilges under the officer's quarters and in the engine room, and back when Skipper John Nolan decked over the original cargo hatch.  Hard work never hurt anyone. Next month I'll be promote to rear admiral in the Navy.  It's been a long time since I left NJ, but of all the things I've done, my time aboard Ship 28/228/5228 were some of the most important in my life.  I'm extremely proud to have made Quartermaster and of my time aboard.  My best to all the current crew.  You never know where the next 30 years will take you!

Sleepover & Fishing Trip:

Saturday June 5th - Again all Sea Scouts, Leaders , Families & Friends had a Great Day Fishing.  Although no one bagged any Tuna or Great Whites the Scouts earned their Sea Legs with the Rocking and Rolling!  The Invisible Fishing Award went Mate Jack's Friend Artie for snagging a rusted fishing net with two Clams...............  :)   The weather turned out to be fine but a little breezy.

Skipper Dennis made his second soft docking back at the Sea Base with strong wind and tides!

Pistol & Rifle Range:

This Past Saturday 7 Sea Scouts and 2 Leaders attended Youth Day at the Range upstate N.J. - The Scouts were trained under NRA supervision and then fired all sort of weapons.  This includeded Skeet Shooting with Shot Guns.  High Powered Semi-Automatic Weapons.  Black Powered Rifles.  It also included close range small bore target shooting.  Although we are A Sea Scout Ship - Our Leaders believe that Scouts should sample all that Scouting has to offer.
