Ship-24 "Adam Hyler" History:

Co-Ed Sea Scout Ship-24 Was Chartered in 2000 by "Group of Citizens of New Dorp" on Staten Island.  It was formed by Bill Kerber and the Long Time Scouting Family of Bob and Brenda Gazinski with Brenda as the COR. The bi-weekly meetings are held in the "Scout Hall" at 19 East 4th Street.  The Hall was established in the early 40s to support the Boy Scouts of America and the "Staten Island Council" which is part of "The Greater Councils of New York".  The Scouts Training is supplemented by Staten Island's own BSA "Pouch Camp" where water activities are scheduled. The Ship operates 3 vessels.  The 65' Power Boat "Adam Hyler" - The 38' Sailboat "Scout X Scape" and the 27' "Fresca". (Fresca Lost in Sandy)

Captain Adam Hyler:

Adam Hyler (1735-1782) was a privateer and whaleboat Captain during the American Revolution.  He harassed the British fleet in New York and the waters around Staten Island and Sandy Hook.  He destroyed many of their Ships and captured crews.  Hyler lived in New Brunswick, NJ.  His Sloop was appropriately named "Revenge".  Ship-24 is very proud to have his name associated with us.

Skipper Ship-24:

The Skipper of Ship-24 has been operating boats since 1960.  He built his own boat at the age of 14. Every Summer he would spend his time in Great Kills Harbor.  He would row around Great Kills and later venturing out of the harbor after purchasing a 5 HP outboard engine for his skiff. One Summer he got a job pumping gas for the Captain at the original finger pier in Great Kills Park.  Every Summer he would learn from owners and Captains there how to operate larger craft until he received his Operators License from "The Captain of the Port of NY" at the age of 21.  After upgrading through several power and sailing vessels and taking out Fishing Boats as a First Mate he obtain his USCG 100 Ton Masters with endorsements.
