Patrick Sheeran - 1859

Patrick Sheeran's naturalization form
Patrick Sheeran's naturalization form
This is the oldest known artifact of our direct ancestor Patrick Sheeran. He was born in 1819 and was married to Elen Brady. They arrived here in 1857 with Francis W and perhaps one other child who I believe his name was Ed.

I think these are the four Sheeran sisters. Mary Ellen (?) Bess, Anne and Kate (?) Sheeran circa 1909ish. Kate died in 1910. I don't know much about Mary Ellen except she was the oldest and did not outlive her father. perhaps they both died during that flu epidemic around WW1.

All along I kept thinking the lady in the top left looks like Jane O'Connor Sheeran. But after looking at this long enough, and since this is clearly one of the oldest plates, I'm gonna guess the lady at the top is Mary O'Connor, Jane's mother. The children are Jane, Mary, Kate and John. Maybe not but maybe!

I think this is Mary O'Connor, Jane's mother. There are only about three or four pix of her. I dare say Jane preserved a picture of her mother and Elizabeth safeguarded it too. And the hat is kind of a giveaway. It is the same kind Elizabeth Powers was wearing - 1880's style.

This document came from Mary Dolan (I think). It traces the Gallagher family back to Owen Gallagher, Nancy's father thus Johnny McGinty's grandpa.

May 2010 Updates

Over the past year via the miracle of Facebook, I have said hello, gotten acquainted with, and even met many of our cousins in the UK. Anne and Chris Friend were kind enough to dig up a few photos of my Great Grandparents Michael McGinty and Anne Gallagher. To me that's a great thing because that is a huge step toward getting to know my deceased family. It brings me a strong feeling of actually knowing them - kinda like I'm meeting them for the first time.

Facebook was a miracle unto itself. I got acquainted with a few cousin over there - first discovering the Friends and corresponding with Christina McGinty - a rather nice young lady. Interestingly she is dating a guy named Kevin Cole - how odd is that eh? Then I discovered a few of Anne and Chris's kids - Helen, Will, and Doug. They seemed a rather quiet group - I was guessing they didn't Facebook much.

The big surprise is one of the quiet ones Will Friend roared to life for us when he and his friend Tim set out upon a huge American tour and stopped in since we were along the way on their path. Will stopped in for an overnight visit. We had a nice discussion about the family and he sorted out who was who over there and we shared insights into family history. Apparently most of the family is in Manchester but the Friend family is outside London.

So we have two new important family pix - Michael and Anne have rejoined us. Chris says he has more interesting items to share at some point. I look forward to seeing what they have for us in the future. Maybe in the future I'll add the entire British and Irish McGinty family to the photo essay. Till then ...

About this site

Somewhere along the way in my life I decided that the most interesting thing in life was life itself, most specifically the people in life. History has always fascinated me because it is the story of who we are. It took me too long to realize that as valuable as it is to know the history of say Carthage, what good is it to know all about the Carthaginians if I don't even know the history of my own family - which is to say to not know the history of my own self! So anyways here it is, the latest addition to my family history research.

These essentially are the photos and I plan to compile as much of the narrative to go with it as I can in the near future. I've learned a lot of interesting stuff and look forward to sharing it with you. I'll update with anecdotal tales and more. Enjoy, and by all means contribute. Our great grandchildren will be grateful that you did.
