Our mission as first grade teachers is to give students the academic and social skills needed to progress to second grade. We do this by engaging students in meaningful learning experiences. We want to foster a sincere love for learning!
You will be amazed by the growth your child demonstrates in first grade! Your first grader will make new friends and discover new interests. We look forward to a GREAT year!
Writing Workshop: First graders learn to see themselves as writers! Students write for multiple purposes and are engaged in writing tasks each and every day. Writing workshop begins with a mini-lesson where students are taught a skill. Students then have about 30 minutes to work on their own writing. At this time, the teacher individualizes instruction through writing conferences. The class gathers again for a share time to celebrate each other as writers and review the day’s mini-lesson.
Reading Workshop: Reading workshop teaches students the positive habits of good readers. Good readers read everyday and think as they read. We teach students comprehension strategies to boost their involvement with literature. We also teach students how to read fluently. Students are pulled for guided reading groups and are given “just right” books that fit their current stage of reading development.
Math: The main emphasis in first grade is to teach the students addition and subtraction skills. Other areas of focus include: estimation, geometry, measurement, time, and money. First graders use many types of manipulatives to learn math skills through hands-on exploration and learning.
Social Studies & Science: Students are exposed to a variety of topics in social studies and science. In social studies, students learn about some of America’s great heroes. In science, some of the major units teach shadows, magnets, and weather.
